New Homes

A/N: The top picture is supposed to be Donatello and Sarina's shelter. The bottom is Scarlet and Raph's ^^

"There! All done!"

Raphael beamed proudly at him and Scarlet's newest creation. The two of them stood in the center of a small, snowy clearing, with snow swirling around them and fluttering to the ground. They were gazing at the small shelter they'd made out of twigs, sticks, and several dead leaves. Tiny and low to the ground, it was just big enough to fit the two of them in, with no way to seal off the entrance.

"Almost like our hut back home, huh Scarlet?" Raphael asked, turning to his sister.

The little girl's eyes grew misty with longing as memories from District Seven came flooding back–jumping into gigantic piles of leaves during the fall while Raphael watched, the thrill of hunting in the woods, using her brother's axe for the first time. She could only nod in response.

"Well, what're we waitin' for?" Raph said. "Let's try it out."

"Um...Raph?" Scarlet squeaked.

"What?"

"You know...I feel bad for leaving Marcus behind."

"Aw, don't feel bad, sis. Marcus is tough. He hasn't died yet, after all. He'll find his way back to us."

"Are you sure? Do you think he'll be mad at us?"

"Of course I'm sure! He won't be mad. We're allies, remember? Now c'mon, let's try out our new home."

He dropped onto his hands and knees and crawled into the newly-built shelter. Doubt weighed down Scarlet's little heart as she followed him.

Slowly, Sarina's eyes blinked open. She moaned, sitting up, and immediately felt a jolt of panic. She was in an unfamiliar place–it was like a tiny cave, with a small amount of space. The floor was covered with crisp, dead leaves–although they pricked at her skin, they were warm, and much better than freezing snow. The cyborg girl's eyes flashed.

Where am I?

There was a rustling noise from outside, and then a purple-masked face appeared in the entrance of the shelter. Donatello's eyes lit up when he saw his friend.

"Sarina! You're finally awake," he breathed. "You were out for almost a full day. Good to see you're recharged now."

He slid in with her, brushing snow off his shoulders.

"So, what do you think of my shelter?" he asked. "I know it's not much, but–"

"It's lovely," Sarina told him with a smile.

Donatello's cheeks turned pink as he smiled sheepishly.

"Thank you," he said. "Hey, great news. I just finished reactivating the last of the mines. Now our camp is completely guarded by explosives."

"That's great! That you figured it out, I mean."

"Here, come with me and I'll show you how to avoid them. You know, so you don't get blown up."

Sarina allowed him to take her hand and lead her out.
