Chapter 5 Fire and Ice

A/N: Chapter switches POV a couple times so watch out for the markers. Killian's got a nicer side in this chapter than he had in the others, I'm attempting to establish a connection between him and Sera. :P Don't worry, Scary teacher Jones isn't gone for good. He will be back XD I hope you guys enjoy this, I was a big ol struggle bus for this chapter so hopefully that doesn't show. Apologies for the typos, I got a new computer and the spell check doesn't appear to be working great, and I also do not have a beta.  Let me know what you guys think in the comments <3

As I made my way to my classroom the following morning, I had a lot on my mind and most of it was consumed by Sera Stark. I had spent most of the night looking into our new little spitfire and I wasn't even sure why. I never really cared to look too deeply into other students, but I'd never been faced with one like her. She was bold. other students who dared to challenge me usually fell apart the moment I would turn to face them, but not her. She never took her eyes off of mine while she spoke and I couldn't stop thinking about the way the orange flecks in her eyes seemed to spark to life the moment she turned them on me.

I sighed shaking my head trying to shake her out of it. She was a student and while we weren't that far apart in age, it was still wrong to think about her as anything but my student. I turned down the hall and looked at the double doors to my classroom. They were cracked open just a bit, which was odd because I always locked my classroom when it wasn't in use. I sighed heavily figuring it was Will and his gang of miscreants trying to find cheat sheets for tests.

I stormed into the classroom fully prepared to rain hell on whoever had broken in, but the room was quiet save for the soft click clack of someone typing. I scanned over the classroom and found Sera, in her seat typing away at her computer. I raised an eyebrow and walked down further into the room.

"What are you doing in here Miss Stark?" I asked.

There was no response. I didn't realize until I was right behind her that the reason for this was because she was listening to very loud music. I rolled my eyes and walked around to the front of the desk and nudged it with my foot. She looked up, completely un-phased and took one of her ear buds out.

"Yes?" She asked.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"You requested, that I was on time." She said and then tapped her textbook with her finger. "And prepared."

I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose.

"You're an hour early, but perhaps I should have asked, how you got in here instead."

"You would think that a school of magic would have some magical barrier around the classroom doors to keep people out." Sera said and pulled the pin that was keeping her raven hair out of her face out and showed it to me but I was more focused in watching the way her hair fell over face.

I swallowed thickly.

"You realize that breaking into a classroom is grounds for detention right?" I asked.

"Well I figured, but honestly the only reason I did it, was because I didn't want to give Regina another chance to sabotage me because for whatever reason she feels I am a threat to her."

"Before you, she was the only student with an affinity for fire." I shrugged.

"Well its not like I asked for it." She mumbled. "If I could give it to her I would."

"Why give away what makes you special?" I asked. She looked up at me and there it was, that damn spark in her eyes again.

"I liked being normal." She said quietly.

"Normality is a paved road. It's comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it." I said leaning in slightly. She bit her lip and leaned in and we were almost nose to nose. This girl had nerve.

"Vincent van Gogh. How teachery of you." She smirked.

It was in that moment that I knew if I didn't get a hold of this situation, it was going to get dangerous and fast. There was just something about Seraphina Stark that lit a fire in my soul. I'd known her all of two days and I felt like I'd known her a lifetime.

I pulled back and cleared my throat.

"What is it you are working on?" I asked. Her smirk dissolved, into a slightly disappointed smile and she shook her head.

"My normal school work." She replied.

"That is a lot of work to take on." I said.

"Its not too much." She shrugged.

"Aye I suppose not for you. You had the highest marks in your old school."

She looked up at me curiously.

"I like to know what exactly I am dealing with when Gold takes in another new student." I replied in response to the question her eyes held.

"Oh." She said and looked back down at her computer. "Yeah, I did. I think that is about to change here though." She sighed.

"Why is that?" I asked.

"Well, yesterday after you so rudely kicked me out of your class, I had potion making, I was great at Chemistry so I figured this may not be so bad. Wrong. Whatever I was making, exploded, laughter ensued Zelena made me help clean up the classroom. Oh, and then there was spell casting. Tink started me on a simple repair spell to fix a broken vase. I tried exactly as she told me to, and a piece of broken glass flew off and hit Jefferson Hatt in the face. It cut him and I felt awful." She groaned and put her head in her hands. "And we won't even talk about Elemental Magic..where I couldn't do anything at all."

"You called me an ass. Of course I kicked you out." I scoffed.

"That was all you took out of that whole spiel? Self centered much Jones?" She asked.

I raised my eyebrow at her.

"Tread carefully Stark. I wasn't done. It was your first day, you're new to magic there are bound to be hiccups which we can work with, if you allow us to."

"According to a conversation I overheard between my parents..its not exactly a new thing." She mumbled.

"Most gifted children experience a flare up early in life and for years parents have been writing it off because they don't understand, at least they didn't until Gold exposed us and then they started trying to pretend it didn't exist because they didn't want to deal with having a child with powers. Its unfortunate but it happens." I sighed and looked down at her, my words seemed to strike too close to home with her. Her eyes were clouded over and she looked down at her computer again.

I wasn't exactly sure what was happening in this room at this moment. Yesterday, I would have thought Mr. Jones hated me but today, it felt like I was talking to someone I'd known for eternity. Something with us just seemed to click, and I felt like I didn't have to put the mask that everyone else got, on. It was both freeing, and terrifying at the same time. He was a teacher and while he didn't look that much older than me, having any sort of relationship other than student and teacher was not going to be acceptable so whatever this feeling was..I needed to bury it.

"What class are you working on?" Mr. Jones asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.

"Math." I sighed. "A History of magic teacher wouldn't happen to know how to solve his way out of a complicated trigonometry problem would he?" I asked "I've been working on this particular one for the last 20 minutes."

Mr. Jones walked around to my side of the desk with his hands tucked in his pockets. He stood beside me and leaned down to look at my computer screen. He smelled of leather, obviously from the leather waistcoat he wore, and there was a faint, not overpowering smell of spices that I couldn't place, but knew it must have been a cologne. There was also a hint of coffee, and the smells all together were intoxicating. I tucked my hair behind my ear and pointed to the screen trying to not make it obvious that I was clearly smelling my teacher.

"This one.." I said.

"I see." He mumbled and scanned over the problem, and my work.

"Do you see where I'm going wrong?" I asked.

He nodded.

"If I may.." He said and leaned in closer

Yes. Yes you may.

"You've mixed these numbers up here." He said and pointed to the screen. "Just put this one, here, and that one there, and work the problem again."

I looked at the screen and sighed heavily.

"Of course.. I'm an idiot.." I muttered and started typing.

"Not an idiot, but and this is just a wild guess, stressed." He suggested and shrugged.

"That too I guess..thank you."

"You're welcome." He said.

I looked up at him, He hadn't moved, he was still leaned in to my desk, but his attention wasn't on my computer, it was on me.

"T..Thank you." I said again.

"And again, your welcome." He chuckled.

I felt what started as heat on my cheeks, knowing my face was probably as deep of a red as his button up shirt, but then..the heat began to spread throughout my whole body and I knew what was coming next.

"Oh..no." I mumbled and closed my laptop. "I.. have to go." I said and stood up.

"Sera class starts in 30 minutes." Mr. Jones said, and tilted his head looking at me up and down. "You should sit, you aren't looking well.." He said and reached his hand out but I backed away.

"No!..just stay back. I don't want to hurt anyone else." I pleaded.

"Sera you aren't going to hurt me. I think I know whats going on here just calm down" He said putting his hands out. I shook my head.

"I have to go." I said again and hurried for the door.

"Sera! Stop!" He shouted, sternly and I felt his hand on my upper arm before I heard a sizzling sound and Mr. Jones pulled his hand back and hissed in pain.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it." I said.

"I know you didn't, just let me hel-" He started to say but before he got the rest of the words out, I was fleeing from the classroom.

-------------------------------------------------

I dropped my computer, the fever was becoming unbearable and I could hear my blood roaring in my ears. Other students were coming out of their dorms and watching me like I was a circus act and I went from panic, to anger. I looked down at my balled fists as they were engulfed with flames. Other students quickly backed away.

"Everyone, back in the dorms until you are told otherwise!" Mr. Jones barked from behind me.

Everyone seemed to disappear back into their dorms except Elsa.

"Elsa, you too." Mr. Jones said.

"I think I can help." Elsa said "Please."

I turned around to face Mr. Jones.

"Just stay away!" I yelled. Elsa backed away a bit but Mr. Jones just kept walking forward with his hands out. I looked down at my hands in confusion as the fire from my hands seemed to be going to his.

"Elsa, now." He instructed.

I felt Elsa's freezing hands on my shoulders sending a shock of cold through my entire body and I collapsed on the floor shivering. Elsa went to crouch down to me.

"She'll be fine, go get Zelena." Mr. Jones said and Elsa hurried off. I looked up, in confusion as the fire that was now in his hands was put out like it was nothing.

He put his hands on my face and they were warm, and comforting as I shivered and started whimpering.

"I'm sorry." I cried.

Mr. Jones sat down on the floor pulling me into a sitting position and holding me against him to try and warm me back up.

"Don't be sorry, you have nothing to be sorry for.." He said and brought his lips to my ear, whispering something that I couldn't make out but I found myself suddenly unable to keep my eyes open and my head fell on his shoulder as I drifted to sleep.
