Chapter 3 Challenge

A/N: This one shifts POV a few times so keep an eye out for the markers. :) As always enjoy and let me know what you think! This one is probably going to be more fast paced than the first Teach Me to Love Book. I hope you guys are okay with that :)

I put my hands firmly on Seraphina's desk and leaned in, getting a good look at her for the first time. She had fair skin, and her raven hair fell in front of her eyes until she nervously tucked it behind her ear. Her eyes were brilliant, and I knew that I shouldn't have been looking so closely at them. One was blue, the other was green and they both had flecks of orange floating around in them. They were lined with dark make up which made them stand out even more. She anxiously bit her deep purple colored lip as I leaned in until I was face to face with her.

Although I could tell she was scared by the way she held her breath, her eyes never left mine. She was determined not to back down and that was something I admired. That drive was something I could work with.

"I've been warned by Swan about your attitude, as I am sure she warned you that It wouldn't be tolerated in my classroom." I spoke finally

"She may have mentioned it." She replied still refusing to break eye contact.

"Tell me, Seraphina Stark if the roles were reversed, what would you expect?"

"I would expect that for a students first day at a completely different school, in a completely different world from the one they are use to, with the roommate they have obviously trying to sabotage them that as I teacher I would do well, not to attempt to belittle said student, just to keep up with a reputation of being a hardass." She said.

"Because, Mr. Jones. I wouldn't have possibly known what said student might have been going through prior to arriving late and unprepared for a class they had no idea how to prepare for because they were blindly thrown into this atmosphere and expected to just slip into the grooves like they belong there without giving them proper time to adjust."

Her eyes narrowed and she leaned into the desk to where we were almost nose to nose.

"You don't know anything about me so until you do, I ask that you back off and do your job without ruining my day anymore than it already has been. Sir." She all but snarled at me.

I didn't even know how to respond to this. No student ever had the gall to challenge me like this. Most of them backed down immediately. The way she spoke, was not like any other teenager I'd faced. She spoke with confidence, and grace, any other student would have either lost their temper and ended up in detention, or babbled over their words like an idiot, but not her. She was going to be my biggest challenge yet.

All eyes in the classroom where on us, and they were at the edge of their seats. I had to make a move and it wasn't a move I'd normally make but I prefered to teach my class with as much focus as possible, and it was not going to be possible with her sitting front and center. I didn't want to admit it but something about Miss Stark knocked me down a couple of pegs and that just wasn't going to work.

"Out." I said and nodded towards the door.

"Excuse me?" She asked.

"I said out, That means, get up, and walk out the door." I snapped.

She stared at me for a few seconds more before she scoffed and gave me a look. It was a look that suggested she knew she had won this time. I returned her look with a look that said, she may have won this battle but didn't mean I wouldn't win the war.

She slowly stood up, and pushed her chair in and turned around before walking out of the classroom.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Come lunch time, I sat at my usual spot in the lounge, in the teachers quarters scrolling through emails on my phone making sure my students were turning in their assignments.

"Well, someone is extra scowly today."

I looked up at the blonde who parked herself across from me.

"Good afternoon, Swan.." I said and looked back down at my phone.

"Alright, what's up with you?" Emma asked and took a bite of her lunch. "Students giving you trouble?"

"Student. Yes." I sighed.

"Let me guess, Stark. I told you that one came with a warning label." Emma smirked.

"Aye." I chuckled. Of course warning label was an understatement.

"What happened?" Emma asked

"She was late for one, and she was unprepared, then she decided to start chatting with Mills and when I asked her why she was speaking, she asked me why I was such an ass."

I could tell Emma was trying her best not to laugh.

"I'm not that bad, Swan.." I grumbled.

"You made Ashley cry last week because she forgot to turn off her cellphone, and the week before that Jefferson was asking me to take him out of your class because he thinks you hate him and thats why his grade is low."

"I don't hate him, his grade is low because he cheats off Scarlet." I rolled my eyes. "And if the students can't figure out to turn there cellphones off by now that is not my problem."

"So what will we be doing about Sera? A month of detention?"

"I kicked her out." I shrugged.

"You what? Killian its her first day!" Emma groaned and put her head in her hands. "I'm trying to get her to want to stay so she doesn't just leave next month when she turns 18 and we can't stop her."

"If she doesn't want to be here, why make her stay?" I asked.

"Because she needs to learn how to use her magic. I put her in your class because I know you can help her."

"I teach History of magic, Swan."

Emma glared at me.

"Only because Gold refuses to let you teach Elemental magic. Sera is an elemental with an affinity for fire. You are one of the best and that is what she needs."

I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. It made sense honestly, her attitude, her unbreakable determination and that irritating connection I felt with her the second she walked in. Elemental magic wasn't a rare thing, but very few students ever had an affinity for fire.

"Shes got a lot of shit going on at home, and she has to deal with Regina as a roommate, Give her a break."

"You are sure, me teaching her how to use her magic is a good idea? I'm already questioning you putting two students with an affinity for fire in the same room. Especially Regina and that one. I foresee many a fireballs being thrown in that room."

Emma smirked.

"Since when have you ever turned down a challenge?"

"I can't teach someone who doesn't want to learn Emma." I sighed.

"Give her some time." Emma winked and stood up. "I have to go check on her now and make sure she's not plotting to sneak away and never return."

"Good luck with that." I grinned. "Tell her if she wants to come back to my class, to come early and prepared tomorrow."

"You would have let her in anyways." Emma smiled.

"What makes you think that?" I asked.

"Because she challenges you. And you like that."

☽𝕊☾

So far, my classes had been dull in comparison to class with Mr. Jones, probably because I had literally no idea what was going on. Math and science, I understood, potion making, and spell casting? Not so much. I was still trying to decide if I was dreaming or not. None of this felt real.

It was lunch time now, I looked down at the food in front of me and had to admit, I was surprised. It actually resembled food. I took a picture of it and sent it to my best friend Victor just to make him jealous knowing full well he was eating cardboard cafeteria pizza right now, while I had almost a full course meal in front of me. I sighed and looked up at the empty seats at the table around me and then followed up the picture with a message

Me: Miss you..

Vic: Miss you too. Hows it going? Learn how to turn Gabe into a toad yet?

Me: Ha. Ha.. Maybe tomorrow. Got kicked out of my first class.. That was fun.

Vic: you overachiever, you.

I jumped at the sound of a couple of trays hitting the table and looked up to see August, and a girl with white blonde hair tied in a side braid and blue eyes.

"Hey." I said and set my phone to the side.

"Hey Sera." August smiled. "This is Elsa."

"Hi Elsa." I said quietly and picked at my food.

"So that was wild..in Jones class." Elsa said as she sat down. "I've never seen anyone stand up to him like that."

"I just didn't want to be pushed around any more than I'd already been today." I shrugged.

"What is your next class?" August asked.

"Elemental magic..what is that?" I asked.

"Only elemental's get that class." August explained.

"I'll be in there with you." Elsa smiled. "What's your affinity?"

"My affinity?" I asked.

"You know, like Fire, Ice, Water, Wind? Earth? Mines Ice!" Elsa grinned.

"Huh. I thought I was a wizard, apparently I'm a bender.." I sighed and rubbed at my temples. "I don't know, everyone seems to think its fire."

Both Elsa and August gaped at me.

"What?" I asked.

"Theres only three people in this school including you with an affinity with fire. Its not common at all." August said.

"Fantastic. I'm even more of an outcast. Who are the others?"

"Regina, and Mr. Jones." Elsa said.

I never wanted to bang my head into the table more in my life.

"Is there any way to make this all stop?" I asked.

Elsa shook her head.

"No, believe me I tried. Suppressing it only makes it much, much worse. Ingrid is a great teacher though. She can help you. You don't have to be afraid of it." Elsa smiled.

I sighed and looked down at my food.

"Thats a cool tattoo." August said. I looked down at my finger, at the tattoo of a crescent moon he was obviously talking about.

"Thanks. My brother has one on his too. But its a star. Our Dad calls us his moon and stars." I said and gave a half smile.

"Did it hurt?" Elsa asked.

"Well considering we got it done by one of our intoxicated friends at a party yeah. Not that it would have mattered, its a needle stabbing you fifty to a couple thousand times per minute." I smirked at Elsa's scrunched up face  "What tattoo shop is going to tattoo a 17 year old and a 15 year old? Well at the time 16 and 14.."

"Were your parents pissed?"

"My mom kind of, Dad..not so much." I said and swallowed thickly trying to keep my emotions in check. It had only been half a day and I already missed my family.

"I'm..I have to go." I said and stood up. "I'll see you in class Elsa.."

I walked away from the table wiping tears from my eyes and hurried out of the dining hall.

I walked up the hallway towards the dining hall, with my phone in one hand, and my coffee in the other scoffing at the striking similarities between Jefferson's assignment and Will Scarlet's assignment. I heard someone sniffle, and looked up just in time to collide right into Sera Stark. My coffee was knocked from my hand and spilled onto the floor and Sera fell backwards onto the floor.

"Bloody hell!" I grumbled and looked down at Sera who looked up at me with the most pitiful look I'd ever seen. That strong resolve she had in my classroom was gone in an instant. Her eyes were red and puffy and her cheeks were stained with tears.

She sniffed and looked around for something to clean up the coffee.

"Sorry for spilling your witches brew.." She muttered.

"Actually its an Americano with cream.." I sighed. "Or was." I crouched down to the coffee spill and put my hand over it and waved it and the spill began to vanish. Sera looked down at the vanishing spill, and back up to me, and then down at the vanishing spill again

"You're shitting me.." She scoffed and stood up.

"Miss Stark watch your-"

"Yeah yeah.. Language." She grumbled and shook her head. "I gotta get the hell out of here.." She said and started running off.

"Sera, wait." I said and started going after her but Emma cut me off.

"What the hell did you do?" She demanded putting her hands on her hips.

"I did a vanishing spell on a coffee spill and she lost her shit." I said flatly. Although I did feel a little bad she was obviously upset and I knew that this world was difficult to just step into as she kindly reminded me in my classroom this morning.

"You better go or she'll be halfway home before you catch her." I said waving Emma off. Emma sighed in frustration and hurried off. I looked down at the floor at something shiny and bent down to pick it up. It was a locket. I opened it, and there was a picture of Sera, and an older man who I assumed was her father and on the other side

"With you always, love Dad." was engraved. I sighed heavily as the locket dug up old feelings that I had long since buried as well as an overwhelming sense of guilt and I knew then somehow that, Sera Stark was about to be more of a challenge than I bargained for.
