Chapter 1 Gifted.
A/N: Heres chapter 1 I hope you guys like it. In the header is just a drawing I did of Sera. Her hair is supposed to be black but I wanted a contrast between the color and the line art so it looks kind of purple. :P I haven't really described her looks, but I will when I get to Killian's POV.
I blinked my eyes open and raised my head slightly. The side of my face stuck to the leather material I was laying on and I groaned as I pulled away from it, and looked around the very dimly lit room. There was a large desk, with no one behind it, a couple bookshelves, and some candles lit around the room. I sat up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes and looked down at the red leather jacket draped over me and some of the fog in my head cleared.
"You're going to be okay."
The last thing I remembered before waking up here, was a yellow bug, and a blonde woman with a red leather jacket, telling me I was going to be okay.
That just left one huge question.
Where the hell was I now?
I pushed the jacket off of me and stood from the leather couch before I walked to the door. The second I put my hand on the knob, it twisted in my hand. I gasped and pulled my hand back and backed away as it opened slowly. I looked at the well dressed man, with tan hair, streaked with silver that fell just to his shoulders as he hobbled into the room.
"Good evening Miss Stark." He said and smiled at me and maybe it was because I woke up in a dark room and was a bit out of sorts, but it was unsettling.
I weighed my options, surely I could kick him, and then outrun him, but if my dad ever found out I kicked a crippled old man I'd be grounded until I was 40.
"I don't mean to startle you, You're probably incredibly confused." He said and walked past me, and around his desk and sat down, before leaning back in his chair watching me, curiously.
"You do speak, correct Miss Stark?" He asked after a few seconds of us staring at each other in silence.
"Wh..who are you?" I asked.
"Ah, I apologize I forget that there are those who know my name but not my face. I'm Mr. Gold. Headmaster of Storybrooke's school for the Gifted." he said, again giving me that creepy crocodile grin.
"I don't understand.. Why was I brought here? I'm sick, I should have been taken to a hospital." I said and shook my head.
Mr. Gold chuckled, but it wasn't so much of a chuckle as it was a giggle, Why was this man so unsettling?
"Surely, you've figured out by now that you are different." He said, and leaned forward lacing his fingers together on top of his desk, clearly amused.
"I'm not different. I've been sick. Doctors can't figure out what is wrong." I mumbled.
"Sick?" He laughed. "Seraphina Stark, you are not sick, you are gifted."
I narrowed my eyes at him and clenched my fists.
"Its Sera, and you are clearly mistaken. I am not gifted."
"Why don't you look down, Sera?" Mr. Gold challenged.
I looked down at my clenched fists that appeared to be smoking. I opened my hands and shook them trying to pretend that didn't just happen.
"This...This is kidnapping!" I accused.
" Where is the blonde lady?..the one who almost hit me with her car.."
"Ms. Swan is currently speaking with your parents, who were notified the moment you were placed in the back of Ms. Swan's car. No one here is trying to harm you. We are trying to help you."
"My parents are here?" I asked "How? I thought this school was hidden."
"It is, The only ones who can find it are the staff and students. Another member of our staff lead your parents here, when they leave, they won't remember how they got here.
"You can't just wipe there memories!" I shouted. "My dad is really sick he shouldn't even be here and neither should I."
"Here, is the safest place for you to be. If you thought that your run in, with those men was going to be the only one, you're wrong. Those men have been attacking my students for some time now. I've had to put the school on lockdown, students can only leave for summer, and holidays."
"Well, then its a good thing I'm not a student." I shrugged.
"You aren't yet. Ms. Swan is currently speaking with your parents about your enrollment. In your current state you are not only a danger to yourself, you are a danger to others."
"I'm not dangerous at all!" I argued "My parents aren't just going to hand me over to you."
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in." Mr. Gold said. the door opened, and in walked the blonde woman who almost ran me over. She looked at Mr. Gold, and then looked at me, and the tension in the room was clear to her. She sighed heavily and looked back at Mr. Gold.
"You have no idea how to talk to these kids." She said.
"That is why you do the talking, and I am the one everyone is afraid of." Mr. Gold shrugged.
"I'm sorry if he scared you, I'm Ms. Swan but you can just call me Emma if you want." and extended her hand to me. I looked at the bandage around her hand curiously.
"Its okay, It doesn't hurt anymore. You didn't mean to do it." She smiled.
"I did that?" I asked keeping my hands at my sides.
"Like I said, you didn't mean to, kid. I'm not upset." She said and put her hand down, since I was obviously not going to shake it.
"Where are my parents?" I asked.
"They're in my office doing some paperwork."
My heart sank.
"Paperwork?" I asked.
Emma sighed. "Why don't you sit?"
"I don't want to sit.." I said and shook my head
"Look, I've been in your shoes. I know that finding out you are different all of a sudden is terrifying."
"I'm not different." I said and crossed my arms.
"You have to know by now that something isn't right. Denial is inevitable. Everyone whos ever been brought here has felt it at some point but its only going to make it much worse." Emma said and put her hand on my shoulder.
"I'm not in denial." I scoffed and shrugged away from him.
"Okay, how do you explain turning that kid into a crispy quarterback?" Emma asked.
"I didn't do that." I sighed. "Everyone thinks I did, but I didn't."
"So he just randomly caught fire?" Emma asked skeptically.
"Spontaneous combustion?" I shrugged.
"Oh, Jones, is going to love this one." Mr. Gold smirked.
"He does like a challenge.." Emma sighed and unwrapped her hand and I looked at the horrible burn on her palm and flinched.
"This happened when I touched you. Suppression of your power is not only what is making you sick, its causing harm to others and I know you don't want that. No one does. We can help you, you don't have to be afraid of it Sera."
"I don't want it. Take it away." I said backing up towards the door.
"Unfortunately, that is not possible Miss Stark." Mr. Gold said. I backed up further and felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned and came face to face with my dad. His eyes were red with tears and I knew this was something he didn't want to do but he knew he had no choice.
My eyes welled over.
"I'm sorry." I said trying to choke back the tears. He pulled me into a tight hug and I exploded with tears.
"There is nothing for you to be sorry about." He said softly.
"I don't want to leave you. Please there has to be another way." I begged him.
"I wish there was but your safety is the most important thing to me and your mother and this is the only way to guarantee you will be safe."
"Where is mom?" I asked looking over his shoulder for her.
"Shes um.. She went to the car." Dad said and brushed my raven hair out of my eyes trying to give me a reassuring smile.
Emma stepped forward.
"Usually, this is a drop off, see you later type of thing, because of all the attacks lately. But with your dads health, I want you to go home for the weekend to prepare. Your parents have a list of things you can bring with you when you come back and I will have someone watching your house over the weekend to make sure no one tries anything stupid. Monday morning, I will pick you up."
"Why can't my parents bring me?" I asked.
"Its best they don't visit the school often to ensure they have no memory whatsoever of its location. If someone who wanted to find us, knew that they had been here, they may try to hurt your parents to get that information out of them." Mr. Gold explained.
The thought of anyone trying to hurt my family because of me was terrifying.
"Come on. Lets go home, we have a lot to talk about and you have a lot of packing to do." Dad said and squeezed my shoulder.
"I'll see you Monday morning kid." Emma said and gave me a half smile. I just turned away and sighed.
"Lets go home.." I mumbled to my Dad.
---------------------------------
The dinner table was tense, and quiet. Even my younger brother, Gabriel, who usually had some smart ass thing to say was quiet. Every time I looked up, my mother was watching me closely as if she was afraid of me, and that cut me deep. I knew, she didn't care for the gifted and she thought that something about them was not right, but I always figured if this ever happened to me, that she would understand. I didn't choose this. I didn't even want it.
"So if I set something on fire, can I drop out of school and go to Hogwarts too?" Gabe asked.
There's the smart ass comment..
"Your sister didn't set anyone or anything on fire, this is all some huge mistake that will be cleared up when they realize she isn't one of the gifted." My mother said.
At least I wasn't the only one in denial.
"She is gifted, just in the head." Gabe snarked.
I glared and picked up a dinner roll ready to launch it across the table at him before I glanced at my Dad who gave me scary look. I set the roll down gently.
"Don't be such a dick Gabe." I mumbled.
"Sera!" My mom scolded.
I sighed and pushed my plate away. I'd hardly touched it anyways.
"I'm really not hungry.." I said and got up and walked away from the table.
----------------------------------
Later that night, I walked out of my room and heard my parents speaking down stairs. I walked to the stairs where Gabe was sitting he looked back at me and put his finger to his lips telling me to be quiet before he patted the spot next to him. I crept quietly down the stairs and sat next to him listening.
"This explains so much Darla." Dad said. "The fevers when she'd throw tantrums in the store as a child, the candles, relighting themselves on her birthday cakes.."
"No, Alec, it doesn't!" Mom snapped back at him.
"You have been in denial for so long about this." Dad sighed, getting upset now. "You've made her think that being this way is a problem"
"It IS a problem. Its not right!" My mother hissed. "What are people going to think of us knowing that she is one of them."
"None of this is her fault and you have been looking at her like shes a Goddamned monster since we got home!" Dad growled. "Shes our daughter. Gifted or not."
Tears stung at my eyes as I listened to how disgusted my mother seemed to be with this. I couldn't listen to it anymore. I stood up and hurried back up the stairs to my room with Gabe in tow.
"Go away Gabe!" I groaned.
"Come on Sera you know she doesn't mean it like that. She just needs time to adjust." Gabe sighed. "Shes got a lot on her plate, with Dad..and now you."
"She means it Gabe, shes never liked the gifted."
"Maybe she was right? Maybe you aren't and this is just a mistake." Gabe suggested and sat down at my desk looking at the papers from Emma.
"Hey, It is like Hogwarts, you can bring a pet." He smirked. "You should bring Bastion."
I glanced at the tank in my room at my candino ball python.
"I'm sure they mean a cat or something.." I sighed.
"It says, Any." He replied. "Plus who is going to fuck with you, when you have a massive snake?"
I rolled my eyes and flopped backwards on the bed while he shuffled through the papers.
"Oh, A class schedule. Have you seen this?" He asked.
"No, I haven't really looked at all that Gabe."
"History of Magic with K. Jones. What a boring name for a wizard." He snorted. I couldn't stop the laugh before it came out and I knew that's what he wanted. He could be a jerk, but he always knew how to make me feel at least a little better. I propped myself up on my elbows.
"You gotta get your shit together while I'm gone." I said. "Help mom with Dad, quit skipping school."
"You aren't going away forever." He sighed. "Calm down."
"Gabriel promise me you will take care of him.." I said.
"I promise Sera." He nodded.
"So..can you really do the shit they say you can?" He asked.
"I don't know." I shrugged. "Its getting late. You should go to bed."
"Fine. I'll help you pack tomorrow." He mumbled. "Only because when you are gone I'm taking your room." He smirked and then ducked as I threw a book at him on his way out of my room. I stood up and walked over to my desk looking over the papers that Emma had sent with my parents. I glanced up at a candle on my desk staring at it curiously I slowly raised my hand and put it over the candle. I wasn't really sure how all this magic stuff worked, or why I was even humoring the idea of it. I waved my hand over the candle and when the wick lit, I fell backwards out of my chair.
"Sera you okay up there??" My Dad hollered from down stairs.
"F..Fine dad!" I called and stared wide eyed at the candle as the flame danced around in the jar.
-------------------------------------------------
I threw my bag over my shoulder as the Yellow bug pulled up in the driveway.
"Call me. Every day." I said as I turned around to look at my dad.
"And every night." He nodded and smiled pulling me in for a hug.
"Please don't forget to feed Bastion, you are the only one who doesn't freak out.." I said.
"Are you sure you don't want to bring him?" He asked.
"Hes too big, plus I'll have a roommate and I don't want them hating me immediately.." I shrugged.
"Okay, well if you change your mind, send an owl to let me know." He cracked a smile.
"You people and your harry potter jokes.. I swear." I grumbled.
"Call us tonight. I want to know all about the first day."
I nodded and glanced up at the porch where my mother was standing.
"She'll come around Sera. Don't let it bother you."
I nodded again.
"You better go. Behave yourself,"
"I will, I love you Dad." I smiled.
"Love you too kiddo. Don't let the evil snake house push you around." He smirked.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head but smiled.
I turned around and slowly approached the yellow bug. I walked around to the passengers side and took my backpack off before I opened the door and slid into the seat, I buckled my seatbelt and held my backpack to my chest anxiously.
"Are you ready?" Emma asked.
I nodded.
"Yeah." I said quietly.
No. Not at all.
