[47] Prom night
We walked into prom together and looked around at the large hall filled with other students. Some of these dresses are amazing... puts mine to shame a little.
The room was being lit with coloured lights and really bad music was being played through the hall by the speakers in which the DJ who was sat behind his DJ equipment in charge of the songs controlled.
"These songs are awful," I commented to Alice scrunching up my nose in distaste.
She nodded beside me in agreement. "Terrible,"
We walked around and said hi to some other friends. Or mostly Alice did. A lot of people came over to compliment her and then I. I never realised she knew this many people?
When we use to be friends it was sort of kinda just me and her. That's how it had always been. So none the less I was really surprised to see so many people who seemed too familiar and happy to see Alice.
As Alice finished hugging another girl in a golden tight dress I turned to her as the girl walked away. "I didn't know you were friends with all these people,"
"Yeah, I kinda floated around from group to group when you and I fell out," she briefly explained as we walked around together beside each other. "You know, just making friends and all that,"
"So, in other words, you became popular?"
"I wouldn't say popular," she shrugged. "More like... well known I guess,"
"Well known?"
"Yeah, I would say well known,"
"Is well known not the same as popular?" I asked.
"I wouldn't say it is. You can be well known in a bad way I suppose can't you? you can't be popular in a bad way,"
"Sure you can,"
"Give me one example of one person who's popular in a bad way?" She questioned laughing slightly.
I stuttered for words as I began to think. But before I could say something even more stupid a voice cut me off before I could even get my first word in.
"Oh my god, I love your dress!" I heard a voice say behind Alice and I. We both spun around on our heels to see a girl I had briefly walked past in the corridors of the school, never spoken to her though. I don't even really know her name, just her face. She smiled as she wore a long black dress that met with the floor and her blonde hair was up in a bun.
I wasn't sure if she was talking to Alice or me, but with all the people Alice knew and the fact that I didn't know her, it mustn't have been me. So I looked over at Alice waiting for her to say 'oh hi!' Knowing the girl.
"Thank you," Alice beamed as she put her hand over her chest happily.
"Oh- I was talking to your friend..." the girl nervously stated referring to me. "B-but yours is nice too?"
"You like my dress?" I asked surprised.
"Oh," I heard Alice mumble as her hand dropped from her chest.
"I love it- it's super pretty!" The girl squealed. "I've seen you around in school before, I'm not sure if y'know me though. I'm Lana,"
"Hi Lana, I'm Marsha. I love your dress too by the way, it really suits you," I complimented her back after introducing myself.
"Thank you! Anyway, I just wanted to come to tell you, you look incredible." She smiled. "Both of you,"
"Thank you," Alice and I said in unison.
"Enjoy your night," she waved before walking away.
I looked over at Alice. Who looked at me and smiled. I was sorta scared she would be angry because of the girl complimenting my dress and not hers. But she really didn't seem to care. "She was nice," Alice happily laughed.
"I've never really spoken to her before then, but that was super sweet of her,"
"But she's right, we do look incredible,"
After a while longer of us saying hi to everyone. There were some stupid songs played that everyone did dances to, there were stupid little activities. And at one point a conga line happened which I can gladly say I did not take part in.
Alice and I stayed near the table with the punch bowl on as we talked amongst ourselves.
"I still wish they were here," Alice sighed referring about mike and Billie as we both looked around the room that was lit of all different colours. Filled with people dressed to impress and dancing around with cups in their hands or other people in their arms.
"Yeah, me too. I mean it feels like they should just walk in any minute. But you have to remember this is real life and not a story tale or a teenage movie."
"Yeah, I keep hoping they come in though,"
"Me too, but I know they won't,"
The terrible music stopped as we heard a cough boom through the speakers. Our heads turned to the front of the hall as the principal was on stage with a microphone in his hand as he got everyone's attention. "I hope you all are enjoying prom," he started off as everyone cheered. He gave a thank you to the DJ and the students who helped to decorate the hall before everyone came in tonight, gave a thank you to the teachers too who helped and decided to stay and monitor how prom was going. He gave a sappy speech and blah blah blah... until this more annoying part came.
"And with all of that being said and out the way with. Time for the part everyone's excited for. So now ladies and gents, it's time to announce our prom king and queen of this year!" he announced into the microphone which boomed through the speakers around the hall.
"I hate the fact that there's a prom king and queen," I scoffed slightly over everyone's cheering as we leaned back on the table with the punch bowl on it. Not putting all our weight on it incase we toppled it over and embarrassed ourselves.
"Me too, it makes everyone else feel like shit who didn't get picked or was hoping it might have been them. It's like picking favourites- well I mean. It is,"
"I hope it's not some idiots getting those titles,"
"So time to find out!" He smiled as someone quickly ran over to him on the stage and passed him two envelopes.
"It probably will be," Alice whispered. "Especially when your school is full of them. You watch. It'll be some douche bag as prom king and some horrible klutz as prom queen."
"And our prom king is..." the room did that classic drum roll before he opened the piece of paper and read it. "Nathan Diaz,"
"I hate that guy," I sighed as he got up onto the stage while I poured myself another cup of punch.
"What did I say? prom king, equals total douche," Alice said.
All the girls began to squeal as everyone clapped and he began to do his little speech thanking everyone, acting like he had won a grammy or something.
After that, he left the stage and the principal carried on.
"And the prom queen is..." he tore open an envelope in his hand on the stage. Alice and I stood beside each other not paying attention since we both knew it wasn't going to be any of us.
"This punch is shit," she commented.
"Alice Hilton!"
She spat the punch out across the floor as she looked over at the principal upon the stage who was looking at her. "What?" She asked confused with her eyes opened wide in shock and surprise.
Everyone turned to look at her as they started to clap and people began to push her up to the stage to collect her little crown and sash. She looked at me confused before I smiled and gave her a thumbs up. She turned around and made her way to the stage as she took the sash from his hand and put it on and he placed the crown on her head.
"Want to say anything?" He asked her handing her the microphone. She took it as she looked around the room confused.
"I mean- thank you," she smiled. "I didn't think I would get this to be honest," she said looking down at the sash as everyone laughed. "I don't know if I was supposed to have a speech or something prepared- but I didn't. But thank you!" She smiled again before everyone began clapping.
I whistled over to her from behind the call and giving her a big smile as she gave me one back. She made her way off the stage and through the crowd as she walked back over to me.
"You're prom queen!" I smiled happy for her. "You was right about the prom king, but I'm glad the prom queen isn't some horrible Klutz,"
"I don't know how I have this, no clue why I got this!"
"You deserve it,"
"No I don't- you should be prom queen,"
"Oh shut up," I smiled.
She looked down at the floor for a second as I realised she wasn't exactly quite happy.
She was... sad.
She was prom queen of the night, every girl's dream of their life and possibly the reason behind all their amazing makeup and expensive dresses and alter egos. But yet she wasn't happy.
"What's wrong?"
"I wish mike could've been here for this,"
That's why she's not happy. You can have everything you've ever wanted and more. Something you never thought you'd have. But if a certain person isn't around to bask in the glory with you. Than what much does it really mean to you?
"I am," a male voice said before two arms wrapped around her and hugged her from behind. How did I not see him come up behind her?
But lucky for her. That certain person was here.
"Mike!" She squealed as she pulled out his arms and turned around. She looked up at him before pulling him into a large hug and he hugged her back happily.
So where's my certain person?
He really was happy with her. He looked so happy as he squeezed her tight in his arms. And look how happy she is.
I looked up at him confused and yet excited as Alice squeezed him in a hug. "Mike?" I asked him.
I felt a pair of arms wrap themselves around my waist too from behind. "I know I said I love the black dress, but you look really sexy in red," I heard a rather familiar voice whisper into my ear. I turned around in the pair of arms greeted by a pair of warming green eyes.
"Billie!" I shouted flinging my arms around him and hugging him tightly. "You're here!"
He hugged me back. "I know!"
I pulled away and looked at him. "How!? What about the studio and-"
"-We requested that if we start the work in the studio today super early if we can leave earlier. But that wasn't possible. so I explained the situation to Britney and she said to go back home and she'll do some work on her own going over our recordings," he explained.
"S-she did that?"
"I told you Britney is great," he smiled before I dug myself into his chest hugging him again.
"You're here," I said into his chest.
"I know, isn't that great?"
"I can't believe you're here,"
He chuckled slightly as he pulled away from the hug and kissed me on my forehead. "I meant what I said, you look good in that dress,"
I giggled slightly as I shoved him playfully. "Shut up!" I told him feeling my face heat up from Embarrassment.
How do I still manage to blush?
"I'm just stating the facts," he smiled innocently, his arms around my waist and his forehead touching mine as I smiled like an idiot. "What's this?" He asked as he took his hands off my waist and took my hands off his before taking the cup of punch out my hand and staring at it.
"I wouldn't try it if I was you,"
"Why?"
"It's horrible,"
"It can't be that bad," he shrugged taking a gulp. I cringed lightly as he suddenly spat it out on the floor beside him with a face of disgust. "What the fuck is in that!?"
"I did try to tell you," I shrugged laughing as he wiped his mouth.
"I didn't believe that it could be that bad- how did school manage to fuck up something so simple?"
"I don't know," I laughed lightly watching him. "I'm just- I'm happy you're here."
"I'm glad I'm here too- although I'm not happy that this shitty punch is here,"
We went over and took a seat on two chairs that were at the side of the Hall as we talked for a bit. Everyone else was just dancing with their friends and lovers or huddled into groups talking.
"When do you think they'll play that cliché slow song that people will dance to?" I laughed to him looking over at the DJ who was across the hall behind all his DJ equipment.
As soon as the words left my lips, a classic slow dancing song came on as everyone got up and put their arms around their partners beginning to slowly dance to the rhythm.
"I don't get what's so great about it," he huffed. "You're just dancing."
"Exactly!"
"Now Mikes dancing. I mean Tre, mike and I use to all making fun of everyone slow dancing at proms and parties, and now he's doing it." He laughed looking over at Mike who had his hands on Alice's ass.
"I mean look at that girl over there," I pointed out another girl who was sat across the room on her own in a chair. "She came here with her," I told Billie moving my finger to point at another girl who was dancing with her boyfriend. "But now she's left her to slow dance,"
"What's so good about a slow dance you got to ditch your friends for anyway?"
I shrugged. "Never slow danced, I couldn't tell you."
"No me either."
We went silent for a second as we watched everyone dancing. I watched Mike and Alices before they started kissing and I decided to divert my eyes away from that.
"You wanna find out?" He smiled looking over to me.
I looked back at him surprised and also confused, "What?"
"Well do you wanna find out, y'know what's so good about slow dancing?"
I felt myself blush a little. "Are you meaning to ask me for a dance?" I smiled.
"I guess I am," he grinned back boyishly. "I've always hated people who slow dance at parties. But I guess I'm willing to make an exception for prom if you are?"
"Although I promised myself watching the teenage couples in movies slow dancing I would never stoop to that sort of clichéness. I could make an exception, but for you and you only." I smiled back. He stood up and looked over at me as I stood up too, and we walked together to where everyone was dancing.
I think he may have Been the only person I wanted to slow dance with. The only person I was willing to slow dance with. The only person who I wished to slow dance with tonight.
Although it was cliché, I wouldn't have wanted to be more cliché with anyone else.
We moved ourself into a spot around the other people who were dancing. As he paused and looked at me. He placed his hands on my waist gently as he smiled down at me. I looked up at him smiling back before I wrapped my arms loosely around his neck and on his shoulders.
We began to follow everyone else's rhythm just moving slowly with each other.
"You look so amazing tonight," he whispered. "I mean- you do every night. But-"
I laughed cutting him off. "-Thank you,"
"I can't believe I might have missed seeing you in this dress,"
"Will you shut up about the dress?" I giggled.
"I'm sorry, I can't help it," he nervously smiled.
Why did his smile look nervous? "Are you okay?" I asked concerned as we still danced.
"Yeah I've just- I don't normally dance or anything so I'm a little-"
"-scared?"
"I prefer nervous to scared,"
"Well you're doing great," It was sometimes humorous to see Billie when he was nervous. He normally acted all cool and badass. Or nonchalant and laid back. But when he was nervous he had a tendency to bite his bottom lip. Like now as he concentrated on moving his feet. Just like when he was agitated or angry he would run his hand through his hair. Just one of the many things I picked up and grown to adore.
"I'm gonna level with you babe," he said looking up from our feet and at me. "I'm going to need a cigarette after this,"
"You are?"
"Mhm, you got any?"
"No erm... sorry Billie. I don't bring a pack of cigarettes to prom with me,"
"Fuck- you're right- that was a stupid question," he frowned. "I'll have to bum one of mike,"
"Does mike have any?"
"Hopefully- or else I might pass out,"
"You need a cigarette to smoke or else you'll-"
"-yeah I know it sounds stupid, shut up," he laughed still a little bit on edge and nervous.
The slow song stopped as everyone around us including him and I paused and stopped moving.
"That wasn't that bad," he paused taking his hands off of me as I did the same.
"You think?"
"Yeah- I mean I enjoyed it,"
"You did?"
"But I'll still need that cigarette," he added before he walked away.
I looked at him confused as I watched him tap mike on the shoulder. Mike spun around and smiled when he saw it was Billie as they shared a brief conversation before mike pulled out his packet of cigarettes looking around to make sure no teachers saw them. Before passing one to Billie.
Pair of idiots, they couldn't have made it look any dodgier.
Billie walked back over to me with a successful smile. "I got one,"
"You did?"
"Uhuh," he nodded proudly. "Can we go smoke it?"
"Sure, this shitty music is starting to hurt my head," I said placing a hand on the side of my head.
"Tell me about it," he laughed as he picked up and held my hand. "Makes you wanna shoot that fucker down,"
"You can't kill a DJ,"
"Why not? Someone has to,"
I sighed realising there was no point in arguing on a topic he clearly felt so strongly about and laughed it off.
We looked around the room as we stood at the exit of the hall, everyone was more interested in other things. And it was safe to say Alice's attention was all on the guy she had her arms around. Mike, obviously. So I nodded to him as we swiftly left the hall and exited the school. Once outside we walked around to the side/back part of the building where we would be able to climb to the roof of the school.
"You sure you can still climb up those pipes?" I asked him looking up at the pipes that made their way to the top of the building. The pipes we use to use to get onto the roof.
"I'm not an old man- of course, I can," he said before beginning to climb up them.
I followed behind him struggling since I was in a dress. "It's hard," I said. "To climb. In a dress,"
He got to the top after pulling himself onto the floor of the roof. He then stood up as he offered me a hand, which I took.
He pulled me up onto the roof as I climbed on. Swiping the Little Rock's off my dress as I managed to get to my feet before I looked over at him.
"I haven't been to this place in so long," he smiled to himself as he walked over to the edge.
"Me too," I said following behind him. He sat himself on the ledge as I sat beside him.
"I forgot about this place,"
I looked over at him with a little grin. "Remember when I first found you up here?" I asked.
"You was super pissed off,"
"I wasn't that mad,"
"I do recall you actually telling me I wasn't allowed to come up here,"
"But I let you-"
"-cause I blackmailed you."
I went silent for a minute. "Well- strange to say. But I'm glad you did."
"Me too,"
"Y'know Alice got voted prom queen,"
"I saw her plastic crown,"
"Apparently while her and I weren't friends she became popular. But I'm happy she got it,"
"You are?"
"Yeah- she really has changed. And I'm happy to have her back," I whispered smiling.
I looked over at him. He was still in the clothes he always wore. Which I'm guessing he wears to the studio. Not formal like the rest of us were at prom.
I looked down at the sticker on his shirt before laughing slightly. "Hello I'm: Billie," I read out. He looked down at it and laughed lightly.
"They make us wear them for the people in the studio we don't quite know yet," he chuckled as he peeled it off. He leaned over before sticking it into my dress and tapping it there.
"Why'd you do that?" I giggled as he put his hand into his pocket. He pulled out a pen before leaning back over to me and writing on the sticker.
I felt as he wrote on it before he pulled away and put the lid back on the marker and put it back into his pocket. I looked down at the sticker.
'Hello I'm: Billie's prom queen.'
"Billie," I smiled looking up at him. He smiled back his crooked grin like a child.
"I hope y'know that I drove really fast down here from the studio to be with you tonight, pretty sure I broke several driving laws,"
"Course you did," I laughed. "Is Tre back at home?"
"He didn't come with us, he caught a coach up to see Casey tonight. He said he felt like it would be the right thing to do since he hadn't seen her in ages and everyone else was seeing their girls tonight,"
"That's so sweet of him,"
"He wouldn't shut up about how much he missed her, like when he heard her in the background of that phone call when our song came on the radio. But I couldn't complain because I had none stop been talking about you,"
"Does Britney not get fed up with that?" I asked confused. She seemed to like him to me. But yet she recommends places for us to go on dates and gives him today off so he could be with me, it didn't make sense in my head.
"No," he answered without hesitation before looking at me confused. "Why would she be?"
I sighed. If I had a problem with something. I have to speak up about it.
"I guess it's just," I paused, "it doesn't make sense to me how she knows all these nice restaurants around and she's recommending them for us and-"
He cut me off of my rant. "-well she said she went there with Her girlfriend and they both enjoyed it."
I froze for a second. Rethinking his sentence in my head. "Girlfriend?" I repeated confused.
"Yeah, her girlfriend,"
"I....." I nervously looked away. "I thought she had a crush on you,"
I heard him beside me as he bursted out laughing. He sat hollering next to me in amusement in the fact that I thought she liked him before he shouted out. "Marsha she's gay,"
"She is?"
"She doesn't like dudes,"
"Oh,"
"You idiot," he softly laughed putting an arm swiftly around me.
"I thought you were having a cigarette?"
"I was supposed to, but I guess I just needed fresh air and time away from that music,"
I leaned my head into him as I smiled to myself looking over at the school grounds. After tonight. No more school.
"I'm insanely happy I found you up here," I whispered, but not looking over or up at him.
"Why's that?"
"Because life's just more interesting when you're around. It has been since I found you up here. I never thought I would find anyone like you Billie. I thought boys like you didn't exist anymore- or maybe I thought I was being too picky. But you're everything I've ever wanted. And you were just sat up on the roof doing fuck knows, but I found you."
"You mean that?"
"Of course,"
"I'm happy I ran into you too. Sometimes I think that if I wasn't up here at that certain time I might never have met you."
"I'm sure we might have bumped into each other in the halls?"
"What and you think we'd give each other a second look? You'd probably curse at me for being in your way even if you were in mine and walk away,"
I started laughing. "That's not true!"
"Yes, it is!"
When I saw him up here. I never thought he would just instantly own my heart.
I never thought he would be this important to me. I never thought anyone would be this important to me.
But he was, he was the love that came without warning. He had my heart right in his hand before I could even say no. And just like that, I was his.
There were moments with him that felt like pure bliss. And there were moments with him I would rather turn a blind eye to. There were moments that I think about and laugh. And there are moments I miss.
And I know this will be one of them.
"When you become a famous punk singer, you'll take me with you... won't you?" I asked him randomly.
He looked down at me with his arm still around my shoulder. "Of course I will," he said seriously. "I wouldn't want you anywhere else,"
"You promise?"
"Pinky promise," he chuckled slightly as with his other hand he extended his pinky. I took my hand as I locked my pinky finger around his and we shook on it. Pinky shook.
And the simplest things felt all right. The nights when we just sat. Because sometimes having each other's company was enough. It was all we had, but it was all that we need. Even when we just sat beside the sea. Or on a rooftop. Sometimes under the stars and sometimes at the light of day. Sometimes it was on fields, or in bars. But all times, it was right.
Because he was right. He was the right one for me. "I love you," I whispered. My voice was quiet in the silent air. But because of the only thing being able to hear was our own breath. He heard me perfectly fine before he whispered my own words back.
"I love you too."
I quickly swung my legs around so they weren't dangling over the edge as his arm dropped off my shoulder. I stood back up on the roof and he looked over his shoulder confused.
I walked over to the chimney and laughed slightly to see the graffiti.
In scrawly but different handwriting both all the messy were his name and mine. He walked over beside me as we just looked at it for a while.
My name was on top, his underneath.
"You don't happen to have a can of spray paint with you do you?" He asked with his hands in his pockets.
"No Billie, like cigarettes. A spray can is one of the many things I don't keep hidden with me on my prom night,"
He sighed before walking around the roof and behind the chimney as I followed him confused. "What are you looking for?" I asked.
"Like a can of spray paint of something,"
"You won't find one of here,"
"Got one!"
I looked at him confused as he shook a can of red spray paint in his hand.
"It's probably empty,"
"Doesn't sound it to me," he said shaking it next to his ear.
We walked back around to the front of the chimney where our names were in green spray paint as he got down on one knee in front of it and began to add more in red.
I wanted to ask what it was he was adding, but decided not to.
Once he finished, he moved the head hole of his shirt from over his nose and stood back next to me with the can still in his hand. He dropped it as I heard it bounce on the floor before he pulled me close into his side by my waist as we looked at the chimney.
