A Fight That Changes Everything
(Play song when it starts raining)
"I have no idea why you dragged me into this Alya." Marinette sighed, grumpily following her best friend to the stadium.
"I dragged you into this because I don't want to be the only one of my friends here." Alya said, not turning back.
"But Nino's going to be there and you two are practically dating."
"The only one of my friends that's the same gender."
Marinette groaned, pulling down her shorts. At least when she was Ladybug, her costume covered her skin. Sure, it was the most skintight thing she's ever worn, but at this point it felt like a second skin. Now, Alya was forcing her to wear a red tank top and black shorts for the defense class they were going to.
Plus, Marinette was still tired from patrol last night, when she taught Chat Noir the sign language alphabet in case they were put in a situation where talking could be their downfall.
Marinette learned sign language from her mom, who had a deaf friend growing up in China, and it became useful when one of them lost their voice. Marinette was debating on teaching it to Alya, that way they could "talk" during class.
"Hey ladies." Nino said, walking up to Marinette and Alya with a combat yoyo in his hand. Those started coming around after Ladybug and Chat Noir started saving Paris. 100 feet of strong string tied to a five pound yoyo, all controlled with a small button on the loop that you put your finger through. Not the best weapon compared to Ladybug's yoyo, but a close third, counting Chat's baton. "Glad you made it."
"Same here. Right Marinette?" Alya nudged Marinette.
"Yeah. Sure." Marinette said, glancing behind Nino to see a familiar blonde haired figure.
Of course Adrien would be here. Marinette chided herself. That's why Alya really wanted me to come. This is probably Mr. Agreste wanting Adrien to practice his fencing.
"Hey guys." Adrien said, walking up to the group.
"Hey Adrien!" Alya greeted, nudging Marinette. Basically her way of saying Marinette, I am trying to set you up with your dream guy. Work with me.
"Hi." Marinette said, looking at her feet.
"Hey Marinette. I honestly didn't expect you to be here. Color me surprised."
"Well then, you don't really know me." Marinette replied sassily.
"Marinette!" Alya said, horrified.
"Sorry. Bad mood. I barley got any sleep last night."
"Same here." Adrien smiled.
"Okay everyone!" Mr. Dargencore, the instructor, said, calling everyone to attention. "Pair up. You'll be teaching each other how to fight because a good majority of the people in here have been akumatized, myself included, so you all, in one way or another, know how to fight."
"Great. I feel bad for whoever I get paired up with." Marinette muttered to herself.
"Hey Nino, you wanna work together?" Alya asked.
"Sure. Come on." Nino grabbed Alya's arm and dragged her to the other end to the stadium.
Marinette looked around to see everyone paired up except for Adrien. And this day keeps getting better and better.
"Guess we're together?" Adrien asked.
Marinette nodded. She moved her eyes to his green shoes. "Can you get me a combat yoyo?"
"Uh sure. I'll be right back." Adrien ran to the weapon's table.
Marinette collapsed on the ground, stretching out on the grass. "Ugh! I hope Tikki's okay..."
"Who's Tikki?" Adrien asked, watching the blue haired girl on the ground.
"Oh. You're back. Tikki is, um, she's my, um, cousin! Yeah. Tikki's my cousin! She just got sick so I hoping that she'll be okay." Marinette lied through her teeth. Like anyone's going to believe that.
"Okay?" Adrien said, confused. "Anyway, here's the yoyo. You know how to use this thing?"
"I think I can figure out how to use a yoyo Adrien." Marinette retorted sassily.
"Okay then. I promise I'll go easy on you, okay Princess?" Adrien smirked, twirling his bow staff.
"Don't call me Princess, okay?" Marinette asked, getting her yoyo twirling by her side.
"Okay." Adrien took a step back. "You really got that yoyo going, huh?"
"I've had a lot of practice." Marinette smirked, then snapped out of it. Say one more Ladybug-like thing and you are officially discovered. Just shut up Mari. "Shouldn't we start fighting?"
"Yeah. Right." Adrien shook his head, adjusting his black T-shirt. "Wanna make first move?"
"I'm better at offense."
"Okay, I guess I'll go."
"I guess you will."
Adrien ran at Marinette, full speed, his bow staff pointed directly at her. Marinette proceeded to throw her yoyo at Adrien, which quickly got deflected. The fight didn't end until somehow, by some miracle, Marinette's yoyo got wrapped around both her and Adrien, causing them to fall on the ground, Adrien on top of Marinette.
"How the heck did this happen?" Adrien asked, trying to wiggle free.
"I have no idea. I'm m-madly clumsy." Marinette said, stuttering as she tried to reach behind Adrien to get the yoyo unknotted from another part of the string.
"What did you just say?" Adrien asked, also moving his hands behind his back to free the yoyo.
"I'm madly clumsy." Marinette repeated. "You know how clumsy I am. I trip over pretty much everything."
"I know. It's just..." Adrien trailed off, thinking of the first time he met Ladybug.
"I'm... Chat Noir. Yeah. Chat Noir. And you?"
"I'm m-madly clumsy."
"It's just what?" Marinette asked, forcing him back into the present.
"Nothing. Just ignore me." Adrien tried to rub the back of his neck, but then he remembered that he was still tied down.
"What did you two do?" Alya asked, running up to the duo on the ground.
"We fought, the combat yoyo tied around us, and now we're stuck. Please free us." Marinette pleaded.
"The release isn't working?" Nino asked.
"Not exactly..."
"It's stuck behind some string." Adrien filled in. "My hands can't reach the yoyo head. Can someone remove the string?"
"I got this." Nino said, moving the string away from the yoyo. "Need any help getting back up?"
"Yes."
Alya and Nino slowly set Marinette and Adrien back on their feet. Marinette pressed the release again as the yoyo unwound. Before it returned to Marinette's hand, it promptly hit Adrien on the head. Adrien rubbed the top of his head as Marinette just gawked.
Why does he have the same dazed look as Chat Noir when he get hit with my yoyo? Marinette thought.
My head feels like I'm with Ladybug again, every time her yoyo hits me on the head. But her yoyo doesn't hurt this much. Adrien thought, noticing Marinette's stare.
"You okay Mari?"
"Yeah. I-I'm totally fine." Marinette stuttered. "It's just..."
"It's what Bugaboo?" Adrien asked, then scolded himself. Why did I just call Marinette Bugaboo? I only call Ladybug that. Unless...
"Why did you just call me Bugaboo?" Marinette asked, completely off guard.
"No reason..."
"Come on Adrien. I know you're lying."
"I'm not lying. Would I ever lie to you Bugaboo?"
Marinette started at Adrien, having a flashback.
"Would I ever lie to you Bugaboo?"
"Chat, this is no time to be calling me Bugaboo! This is serious!"
"Huh." Marinette sighed. Could Adrien be Chat Noir?
"What?" Adrien asked.
Well, here goes nothing... Marinette thought and took a deep breath. "I'm about to do something I might regret later. Just letting you know in advance."
"Okay... What are you going to do?" Adrien asked.
Do you understand what I'm signing? Marinette signed to Adrien.
Adrien's eyes widened. Yeah. I understand perfectly.
Adrien, this is very important. Who taught you sign language?
Promise not to make fun of me or think that I'm a weirdo?
I promise.
Ladybug taught me last night.
Marinette's eyes widened. Another question: are you Chat Noir?
Adrien sighed. Yeah. I'm Chat Noir. How did you figure it out?
You calling me Bugaboo. This is just clawsome and purrfect, isn't it? I mean, I'm personally feline nervous, aren't mew?
Wait, Ladybug? Is that you?
Got it in one.
Wanna meet up later?
Where?
Eiffel Tower. Midnight. You in?
Of course. See you then?
Yeah see ya Bugaboo.
"Okay everyone! We are done for the day. Have a good weekend everyone!" Mr. Dargencore said, ushering everyone out.
"What was that hand conversation between you and Adrien about?" Alya asked.
"Nothing important." Marinette said as Alya dropped the subject. They walked the rest of the way in silence.
When midnight came, Marinette quietly shook Tikki awake.
"Marinette, what's going on?" Tikki asked sleepily.
"We're meeting someone right now. Spots on Tikki."
When she got to the Eiffel Tower, Chat Noir was already there, looking at the skyline.
"Hey Ladybug." He greeted.
"Should we drop our transformations since we know who we are?" Ladybug asked.
"Well, nobody else is up here, so why not? Plagg, claws in."
"Tikki, spots off."
After the transformation was down, Adrien's eyes drifted to the pink kwami. "So Tikki's not your cousin? She's your kwami?"
"Yeah..." Marinette trailed off.
At the same time, both laughed, along with their kwamis.
"Why is this so awkward?" Marinette asked.
"Maybe because I have a crush on you?"
"You have a crush on Ladybug, not me."
"Um, hello!? You are Ladybug!"
"Are you saying you have a crush on both sides of me?"
"... Maybe."
"Of course he does!" Adrien's kwami interrupted. "He has pictures of you all over his desktop!"
"Shut up Plagg." Adrien growled.
"Marinette is the exact same way!" Tikki said. "Plus she has posters of Adrien everywhere!"
"Tikki!" Marinette yelled, blushing madly.
"Does she have action figures of Adrien?"
"No, but she did make an Adrien plushie alone with a Marinette plushie..."
"You're forgetting about the Alya and Nino plushies!" Marinette yelled.
"Which you gave to them! You kept the Adrien plushie all to yourself!"
It slowly started raining, causing the kwamis to hide wherever they could to avoid getting wet. Adrien fortunately brought an umbrella with him and put it over their heads.
Marinette smiled gratefully, then hung her head. "And this is why I didn't want to reveal this quickly. You'd see how much of a mess I am!"
"Marinette, you are not a mess." Adrien said. "In fact, you are one of the most well put together people I know, including myself."
"I screw up everything though!" Marinette complained.
"Oh please. I actually find that cute, in this really awkward way. You're really cute. You have a splash of freckles on your nose that I notice when we have to be in close quarters. You always try to see the best in everyone, even when you let jealousy get in the way. You're super protective of people you love, in one way or another, and you won't let anyone mess with them or hurt them. You don't take crud from Chloé, which is a superpower of its own counting the amount of times we've had to save Chloé from akumas." Marinette giggled. "Not to mention, you're hot."
"No I'm not. I'm a nerd."
"You're a cute nerd."
Marinette sighed. "Why did you fall for me anyway?"
"I fell for you because of your bravery towards Hawk Moth. You put away what everyone said about us and you just stood up to him. It was, without a doubt, awesome."
"You helped me."
"How so?"
"You gave me my confidence. After you did that, I thought I could do anything."
"So, your kwami insists that you have a crush on me. When did that happen? You hated me when we first met."
"When you gave me your umbrella. That's when the crush started." Marinette said, blushing.
"I've kinda been meaning to do something for a while. You mind?"
"No..." Marinette hesitated.
Adrien leaned over and kissed Marinette on the lips. "I love you Mari. Do you love the guy with the cat puns as much as the guy who models?"
"Yes, I think I do." Marinette smiled.
"Let's say we get back home?" Adrien asked.
"Meet at the park tomorrow?" Marinette asked.
Adrien nodded. "See ya tomorrow."
Tikki flew out of Marinette's pocket. "I can't wait."
"Neither can I, My Lady."
"Can you two just go already?" Plagg asked. "This is taking forever!"
"I was just about to leave Plagg. Bye."
"Bye."
"Plagg, claws out."
"Tikki, spots on."
The two raced across the rooftops of Paris, knowing from this point on, everything would change.
