Chapter 5
Another day in Death City, the sun laughing at the students who were now suffering in the classroom. But none were in more danger than the E.A.T. Class Crescent Moon, who stared wide-eyed at their teacher who had a literal loose screw.
"Alright students! Who is ready for more dissections!" Stein cheered with a worryingly enthusiastic tone. "I know I am!" He spun around in his chair like a lunatic.
"Um, Sir?" Maka nervously raised her hand. "With all due respect, sir, since you've become our teacher all we've done is dissect animals. Shouldn't we be doing more productive lessons?" She asked, still somewhat fearful of the maniac doctor.
"Ah! But you see, dear child, what we have here today is far more special compared to a rat of a frog. No, what we have here is much more exciting." He said, gesturing to a cage that held a very scared bird.
"It's an endangered species of cuckoo, almost extinct. It cost me quite a lovely sum of coins to purchase it off the black market but it was a small price to pay for science. Heck, I even had to sell some organs to get it!" He laughed as if it was common knowledge.
"You sold your organs just to get this bird!?!?"
"Who said they were mine?" He let off an ominous aura as he smiled at his students. "Anyway, it seems we're missing some students. Maka, Tsubaki, where are Soul and Black Star?"
"No clue, sir. Black Star just disappeared once we got here." Tsubaki let out a sigh.
"Sorry, Tsubaki. Me and Soul are switching out." Her imagination showed her a scene of Black Star holding Soul in his scythe form.
"Those two idiots better not be doing anything stupid." Maka groaned as she rubbed her temples. "Wait, wasn't Midoriya supposed to be coming to class?"
"That reminds me. We are having a few new students joining us so I hope you are all respectful!" Stein said as he started defeathering the bird's stomach.
"What are the chances do you think those two just wanted to show them around?" Maka asked, hoping that was the case.
"I mean, if it was just Izuku then maybe." Tsubaki answered with a slight chuckle.
"I guess, they did seem alright with him. And I'm sure Black Star wouldn't start something with Midoriya at least. You seemed to get along well with him." Maka forced a joking smile as she saw Tsubaki gain a small shade of pink on her cheeks.
"I-I mean yeah he is really nice. He was very nervous about me being at his house but it was understandable. But he was really accommodating and sweet and cute in a way." She smiled, soon realizing what she had said and hiding her blush.
"Did something happen?" Maka asked, genuinely shocked to see her friend acting like this. Getting nothing more than a strained embarrassed squeak from her in response.
"Quiet down over there!" The teacher hollered, silencing them quickly.
~Outside~
"Yahoo! We're here to confront the asshole who keeps hogging the limelight!" Black Star yelled out, standing at the very edge of the steps like an idiot.
"You mean you're here to confront him for attention, I'm here because I want to fight him." Soul spoke out, lazily sitting by a pillar with a yawn. "And Izuku is here because we haven't shown him around! WHICH IS WHAT WE VOLUNTEERED TO DO!" He yelled, gesturing to said young man who sat not far away from the two.
"Oh yeah! Well maybe I forgot that we were doing that! Ever think about that!?"
"You idiot!"
"Fuck you!"
Izuku could only let out a quiet sigh as he watched the two morons traded insults. It is true that they said they'd give him the tour, but they had to wait for the last few members of they're party. And to say Izuku's interest peaked was an understatement. After all, why wouldn't he be curious about Lord Death's very own son coming to school with his partners. But with that curiosity came a foreboding sense of dread. The young man they awaited was a grim reaper, a being that brings death and reaps souls. One wrong move and any of them could be done for.
"Everyone shut up!" Black Star screamed, cutting him off from his train of thought. "I see people walking up the stairs!"
"Oh? Then the bastard finally mustered the gall to show up!" Soul cackled as Black Star started scaling the building. "What are you doing?"
"Getting up high so I can make a big entrance! Fitting for a big guy like me!" He screamed out as he made his way to the tip of one of the spikes.
"Can you believe him?" Soul asked, facing towards the masked boy.
"...................." Izuku sat there in a long silence, barely shrugging his shoulders in response. Seemingly beginning to shrink with the sudden focus on him.
"Okay...." Soul said, awkwardly grinning at his new classmate. Leaning back into his comfortable seat by the pillar as he waited for the people to reach the top. Which is no easy feat even if he does it every day. To the point he considers just living at the school to save time.
After a few short minutes of waiting, the three had begun to finally hear the sounds of footsteps. Garnering their attention to the ledge, they see the three other new students arrive. The shorter blonde excitedly skipping along as the taller held a smile at her antics. Meanwhile, the boy with the strips in his hair simply looked at the school with pride.
"Ah~ No matter how many times I see it, the school my father built is still a wondrous marvel to behold." The boy said, spreading his arms as his face radiated joy. "Look at the symmetry! It's so perfect! Simply amazing!"
"Uh, Kid?" Liz gained his attention, pointing over to the two who sat and stared at him.
"Oh, hello there. Are you on the welcoming committee?" Kid asked curiously, his eyes drifting over to Izuku in surprise.
"It's Scarf-Man!" Patty cheered with twinkles in her eyes as she saw him. Dashing over to him with great speed, shocking even her partners. "You're so cool! We watched you the other night with Death! You were all like swish and swoosh!" She cried, attempting to mimic his movements from the night prior.
Izuku sat there frozen as crept uncomfortably close to him. In a split second, he jumped far away from her. Clutching at his scarves as he did so, hands shaking immensely. The sudden action caused those present to look on in shock. Patty seemingly confused at this when she started stepping closer to him. Yet, he kept moving away from her with every step.
'What the heck?' Soul mentally asked at the sight. 'He was fine just a second ago, but when she got near him he fled.'
'Is he...trembling...?' Liz looked on at the masked student, feeling a familiar wave of emotions that she had hoped she'd forgotten. 'Did Patty....scare him?'
"A-are....." Patty spoke softly, unsure of what to make of the situation. She didn't like this. She hated the feelings she was remembering, the same ones she felt back then. "Are you okay? D-did I scare you? I-I'm sorry..." Her eyes lose their childlike sparkle with each second.
Izuku kept his tool clenched in his fists, at the ready for a battle. His body shook as he carefully slinked away from them, hiding behind a pillar out of their sight. With them out of his field of sight, and him theirs, Izuku breathed heavily in his hiding spot. Holding his head down and he tried to regain his calm.
"YAHOO!!!!!!" Came the familiar battle cry of the one named Black Star, who stood triumphantly atop one of the massive red spikes. "I see you have finally arrived! Bask in my greatness as I, Black Star, am here to show you who's boss!" He continued to yell down at them, unfortunately they were too far away to actually hear him.
"Is that some kind of monkey?" Liz asked with a raised eyebrow as she watched the boy jump on the spike. "Hey, Patty! Look! There's a funny dancing monkey over there! Can you see it?" She tried to get her little sister's attention.
"Oh, yeah." Patty said quietly, only giving Black Star a passing glance. Her eyes still glued to the pillar that Izuku remained behind.
"I suppose you aren't here to show us around then?" Kid asked, a slight scowl on his face.
"Seriously? You think that we waited three hours just to give you a tour?" Soul sneered with a cackle, barely looking up at the grim reaper. "If you bozos were here at seven you would've had time to look around yourselves."
"Seven? Did you just say seven?" Kid's glared at the white haired teen with disdain and hatred upon hearing his words. "You monster! How can you say seven?! Eight is far superior! Say eight now!"
"What?" Sou's smile dropped awkwardly at him.
"It's impossible to be able to cut the number seven horizontally or vertically and have it be symmetrical!" Kid spoke in a matter of fact tone, his eyes swirling in crazed idiocy. "Eight is the perfect number, seeing as it can be cut both ways and still be perfectly balanced. SO SAY EIGHT BASTARD! I'M BEGGING YOU!" He fell to his knees in anguish.
"What the hell is going on down there?" Black Star yelled angrily, especially seeing as he was being ignored. He was so entrapped by this in fact, he didn't notice that his perch was beginning to crack. Resulting in his falling to the ground just as it broke under his weight. Causing Kid to look on in horror, looking pale as a ghost.
"Do you not understand what you have done?" His hair shadowed his eyes. His aura became dark and threatening as he glared at the ninja wannabe. "How dare you? The school was perfectly symmetrical. How could you commit such a crime against humanity?!"
"The hell are you on about?" Black Star asked, not at all getting what he was so angry about. "Who cares about math? All that matters is that I'm here to fight you! You overzealous punk!"
'Pot calling the kettle black.' Soul thought with a heavy deadpan expression aimed towards his friend.
"Now listen here! I don't care who the hell you think you are! Nor do I even know who you are at all!" Black Star yelled out with a massive smirk, pointing an accusatory finger at Kid. "But this is the day you fall off your high horse and beg for mercy from me! THE GREAT ASSASSIN BLACK STAR!!!"
"Assassins are supposed to quiet you moron." Soul grumbled, his frown furrowing into a smile. "I wasn't looking for a fight, honestly, but your partner there gave our pal a big spook. That's not cool, so we'll need to teach you a lesson."
"Are you two serious? You morons would really risk your very souls, just to appease your own sense of vanity?" Kid scowled as he watched the two boys taking their stances. "Very well. Liz! Patty! Let's go!"
"Ugh! All we've done is fight since we first got here!" Liz sighed heavily before looking over to her sister. Patty was still looking at the pillar that Izuku had hid behind with a forlorn expression on her face. "Little sis? C'mon let's do this and get your mind at ease!"
"Okay." Patty said quietly, barely tearing her gaze away.
With a shine of pink the Thompson sisters bodies morphed into twin pistols. Floating into Kid's hands as he took his battle stance. In silence they stood, awaiting the first move to be made.
'These two are not to be underestimated.' Kid thought, briefly flashing back to their fight against the mad doctor. 'I don't know how but they managed to go against Stein and survive. That alone should speak for their potential. Although...' His eyes flickered to the pillar. 'I could tell that Midoriya is better than them. His aura was strong but there was something off about him. Patty scared him somehow but I can't risk him getting involved. I have to finish this quickly.'
~In the Classroom~
The students grimaced as they watched their teacher pluck the bird's feathers one by one. Each one adding on to the fear and dread the poor animal was feeling. After finishing the stomach area, Stein began strapping it to his desk. Marking the places in which he had planned to begin the dissections with a wild smirk on his face.
*BANG* *BANG* *BANG**
The sounds of gunfire cut their thoughts short. Hurriedly heading to the windows to catch a glimpse of what was happening outside. Much to the mild annoyance of the teacher who was getting rather excited.
"Wait? Isn't that Soul!"
"Yeah! Black Star's there too!"
"What are those idiots doing now?!" Maka grumbled as she watched her partner narrowly dodging bullets. "Stein! You have to stop this?!"
"Huh?" The skeptical man looked at the students, knives in hand barely hovering over the bird's bare stomach.
"In order for students to duel, a teacher must be present to oversee the outcome and be prepared to end it if it becomes lethal!" Maka explained, a slight tick mark growing on her brow in annoyance.
"Fine." He groaned with a heavy sigh as he dropped his knives. "Maka, Tsubaki, the two of you will come with me since you're their partners. Everyone else just study something and don't touch my bird!"
With that out of the way, the trio hurried off to the source of violence. Tsubaki felt worried for her partner while Maka was holding onto a large dictionary for some weird reason. All the while, Stein could only look on in annoyance as he rolled away on his swivel chair like it was some fancy motorbike. None of them were really expecting what they were about to see.
Soul and Black Star are at their heels dodging shots from Kid. Frustrated at how they couldn't even get an inch closer to him. In their moment of hesitation, Kid leapt into the to land a heavy kick to Black Star. Barely standing as he blocked the attack that pushed him to the ground. Without even passing a glance, Kid blocked an attack from Soul's blade with little effort. Using his shock just enough to press his gun to his gut, pulling the trigger point blank. Sending the boy away in fear as he landed on the ground.
"Fuck! That hurt! What the hell?!" He cried in pain as he rolled on the ground struggling to get to his feet.
"Use your brain, moron!" Liz smugly said as Patty let out a small strained giggle at the kid. "Normal pistols would be enough for the next Grim Reaper. The energy from our meister's soul is compressed and fired like bullets. Only ten times more powerful."
"Damn it all!" Soul growled with a sneer.
"Who the hell does this guy think he is? Going easy on a big guy like me!" Black Star scowled in rage, or just stupidity.
"Oh, my." Stein rolled round the corner. "Looks like these two are dumber than I thought."
"Wait, who are they fighting?" Maka inquired in confusion.
"That would be one of our newest students." he cockled slightly with a smirk. "Death the Kid. The only living progeny of Lord Death himself."
"Wait? Death can have kids?" Tsubaki questioned, considering Death, the guy who reaps souls and is the brother of the current king of the Britanian empire from another world, inexplicably has a kid.
"Don't question it, you'd have better luck figuring out what animal Nezu is." Stein joked lightly, not really caring for the reference the author just made about a certain Code Geass parody.
"But, if he's a reaper, why is he coming to school?"
"It was his own decision, one that may in fact be very beneficial for him. You see as a reaper he doesn't have to make weapons into death scythes but he chooses to because he wants to inherit his father's position with his own merit. While also, being around kids his age with similar goals will heavily impact him and allow him a better mindset once the day does arrive." He explained, recalling an interesting meeting he had with Death over this event.
"Sorry Tsubaki but I want to partner with Soul now." She let out a sigh of defeat at the voice of her partner in her head.
"Tsubaki?" Maka turned to her friend. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." She offered a slight smile before refocusing on the fight. Her eyes drifted to the familiar sight of green peeking out from a pillar. In curiosity and worry she made her way to the pillar.
"Maka." Stein spoke, gaining her attention. "I want you to do something. Take a good look at Kid and his partners. Try and get a read on their souls."
"Okay." She said, beginning to focus. Soon the world fell away as three bright lights entered her sight. "Normally meisters can't balance a connection with more than one weapon, but they seem to be very stable. Kid genuinely respects and trusts his partners In turn, they seem to have this form of admiration towards him."
"Very good." Stein said as he focused on the battle. "The twin pistols are known as the Thompson sisters. Before meeting Kid their lives were much harder than most. Fighting to survive in the streets in a brutal city. He saved them from that life and gave them a proper life to live. Yes they still fight but this fighting is more purposeful and fulfilling. While they too leave an impact on Kid, calming down his neurotic tendencies significantly."
"It's truly amazing." Maka smiled at the scene, before scowling in disappointment as she watched her partner get thrown back. "There isn't even a comparison to them and our idiots. Right, Tsubaki?" She jokingly asked, but received no response.
She turned and saw that her friend had walked off. Her gaze soon found her down by a pillar. Walking over to it, she was surprised to see Izuku hiding there. Tusbaki's arms wrapped protectively around him as he breathed heavily in the embrace. Her confusion morphs into concern, wondering what could have happened to scare him like that.
"Ssh. It's okay." Tusbaki spoke softly as she gently patted his hair. As if she was a mother consoling her frightened child. "Everything is okay. No one is going to hurt you. Just breathe, okay?" She smiled at him as he began to calm himself.
Izuku raised his head suddenly before turning towards the battle. A great spike in energy pooling on Death the Kid as Soul and Black Star could only stare. The pistols glowed in brilliance as black spike erupted from his arms. His weapons grew in size, no longer simple pistols.
"Be afraid. Bare witness to why all fear death and reapers who rule over it." Kid started with a vicious scowl.
"Big talk for a simple nobody!" Black Star laughed like a moron.
"Execution Mode: Activated. Be prepared to die." Kid spoke as the energy pooled around him.
"Resonance is stable."
"Black needle soul wavelength is fully charged!"
"Preparing to fire. Feedback in four seconds. Four."
"Three"
"Two"
"One."
"Firing now!"
"No go! Death Canon!"
"Um...We should run!" Soul panicked as he saw the blast running towards them
"NO WAY IN HELL! WE WON'T GET HIT!!!"
The blast had its target, causing a massive explosion in its wake. Kid had turned away in typical anime fashion as the canons deformed back into their default states. The smoke clearing with the wind, but what was revealed caused a wave of shock to wash over them. Standing right in front of the dumbass duo, stood Izuku with a blade in hand. A blade that shined brightly with an energetic glow. A curved blade with a guard at its handle which had multiple spikes shielding his knuckles.
Onlookers stared at the sight in shock as the blade glowed as it shrank down, revealing it to be Tsubaki's ninjato form.
'How did he do it?' Maka stared at him, looking back and forth from his hiding spot to that location. 'He moved so quickly with Tsuabki. It was so fluid, as if they trained for years.'
'So....' Stein's eyes hid behind his glasses as he stared at the boy. 'He's capable of performing a soul resonance powerful enough to stand against a grim reaper. Even if immature, that's no small feat.'
"That was so cool!" Patty yelled in surprise as she stared.
"What the hell!?" Black Star squealed in annoyance. "I totally had that! Why would you get in the way like that?! HUH?!"
Izuku said nothing as he turned to face the boy. Slightly unnerved by histone but ultimately shrugged it off. Well, not before punching the two idiots over the head and knocking them out. Much to everyone else's surprise. The blade glowing once again as Tsubaki reformed into her human form. An embarrassed frown as she looked down at her partner.
"You there!" Kid yelled out to get his attention. "Are you going to continue where they left off? Or will you concede?"
"Can we not? I'd rather actually GO to school and not have to keep on fighting." Liz sighed, but she was glad Patty was smiling.
"He's so cool! He blocked our attack like it was nothing!" She smiled in amazement at the display.
'To fight with a weapon that he's only used now is interesting, but performing a resonance almost instantly is amazing.' Stein puffed a smoke of his cancer stick. "Izuku Midoriya, you just keep getting more and more interesting."
"Wazzup! WAZZUP!!! WWWWWWAAAAAAZZZZZZZUUUUUUUUPPPPPPP!!!!!!" Lord Death materialized out of seemingly nowhere yet no one questioned it.
"Hello Lord Death!" Everyone spoke in unison, save Black Star and Soul for obvious reasons.
"It seems my son has had a eventful first day." He said proudly as Kid shrugged.
"I guess you can call it that father."
"Well now everyone. I'd say it would be best if you all head inside now. Classes had to be postponed because of this match so you all will be here a bit later just to make up for it!" He said excitedly, making most of them groan in response. "Alright off you go now! Charge up those craniums and rub your brain cells together! Learning is so much fun!!!"
Everyone started walking away back into the building with Stein carrying the to unconscious students on his back. Maka, though, looked back a bit with a hint of curiosity.
'I wonder what Lord Death's soul looks like.' She wondered, focusing her mind once again to see for herself. Only to recoil in shock when she saw nothing. 'But Kid has a soul and he's his son? So why can't I see it?'
"Maka come one before the rest of us leave you behind." Her teacher yelled out to her.
"Oh, right! Sorry!" She hurriedly began running back to the group. 'I guess its possible that Lord Death doesn't have a soul.' Her eyes drifted towards Izuku. 'Stein said it himself that Midoriya has a unique soul. And what he and Tsubaki did proves that even more. I wonder.....'
Using her sight, she focused on his soul. But what she saw only left her with more questions. She saw a small green light, quivering in fear with every second that passed. As if it had never once known peace. But, around that light, was another large glow of pink wrapped around the smaller one. As if giving it a comforting embrace.
With her focus lost from the shock, she stared at the boy who stood away from the group. Her mind raced with questions as she watched him in curiosity. Unable to make any sense of what she had just seen from him.
'Was that? No it couldn't be.' She thought, swallowing a nervous breath she didn't know she was holding. 'Does Izuku......Have more than one soul?'
