III Hazel
Bet you didn't see that POV coming! Anyways, on with the story!
Hazel had taken over guard duty with Frank after Jason and Percy had rushed off. She had no idea what they were doing, but she decided that something urgent must have come up for them to have abandoned their post like that. Everyone else had gone to their rooms besides Leo, but he was so immersed in his project inside the hull that she doubted he even knew they were there, so she and Frank were relatively alone. Instinctively, her hand went to the pocket on the inside of her jacket at the thought of Leo. It was generous of Leo to have made that fire proof pocket for Frank's stick of life.
She sensed Frank watching her so she turned and looked back at him. He had definitely changed since they had left. New Rome, that was for sure. It wasn't just the blessing of Mars either. He had a sense of honor and leadership about him. Much the same that Jason had. She was about to speak when Jason, almost as if summoned from her thoughts appeared back on deck.
"Meeting in the dining room. Now." He said quickly before heading over to Leo and notifying him. Hazel looked back at Frank again.
"Wonder what's going on." She asked.
Frank just shrugged and pointed towards the dining room. "Guess we'll just have to find out." The two headed over, Hazel dwarfed by Frank's height, and sat down next to each other. Not five seconds later, Piper and Annabeth appeared, both silent which was unusual. After them came Percy, also looking grim, and seconds later, Jason and Leo. Leo was the only one who was smiling. Hazel assumed that he had probably finished whatever it was he was doing down in the hull.
Jason cleared his throat as he sat down next to Piper and Leo. "So, um, Annabeth maybe you should start." Everyone's gazes swizzled towards Annabeth. She too cleared her throat and began.
"I was notified minutes ago of a rather unusual occurrence." She hesitated and it occurred to Hazel that whatever this "unusual occurrence" was, it must have been pretty awful to choke Annabeth up like this. "Percy's eyes turned red when he and Jason were talking. Apparently he got angry when it happened. So, they came to see me and Percy got angry at Gaia and again, his eyes turned red. This time something else happened though too." Annabeth drew a deep breath. "Gaia possessed him. She talked to us, and Percy told us that he could see and hear and feel everything, except it wasn't him that was doing it. It was Gaia."
Everyone slowly turned to look at Percy, staring dumbfounded. Percy shifted in his seat uncomfortably. "Guys..." He began slowly, looking down at his hands. "I-I don't..." He trailed off, biting his lip. "I'm going to my cabin." He said abruptly and left before anyone could stop him. Annabeth sighed heavily and put her head in her hands.
Hazel was shocked. Percy was like an older brother to her. It pained her that this had happened to him, that Gaia was now able to control Percy whenever he got mad. She couldn't even begin to imagine how that must feel, knowing that if he let his emotions get the best of him, he would be under Gaia's control.
Hazel glanced at the rest of the seven to see their reactions to this monumental news. Annabeth still had her head in her hands, Jason looked as grim as he had when he'd first entered, Piper's eyes were closed and she was holding onto Jason's arm, her mouth set in a determined line, Frank next to her had his mouth open, his eyes disbelieving, and Leo was siting as still as a stone, his eyes the only thing betraying the surprise he felt.
Finally Leo, unable to take the tension in the room spoke. "What do we do then?" Annabeth's head snapped up.
"What do you mean 'what do we do?'. There's nothing to do! We have no idea how Gaia is doing this! It doesn't make any sense!" Annabeth practically shouted. Leo shrunk back.
"I just meant, maybe we could figure something out like..." Leo went silent for a second before snapping his fingers. "I've got it! Why don't we have Beauty Queen do the same thing she did to Percy, Jason, and I with the eidolons!" Annabeth looked doubtful.
"I don't know.." but she was cut off by Piper.
"I never thought I'd say this, but Leo's right!" Piper said excitedly, ignoring Leo's shout of indignation. "It might actually work." Annabeth chewed her lip thoughtfully, and finally nodded her consent.
"I'll go get Percy." She said briefly, and left the room. Hazel felt a smile working its way onto her face. They might be able to help Percy after all! She hoped that this would work, otherwise she didn't know what they'd do. The group of five demigods sat in silence for a minute, each lost in their own thoughts. Then Percy and Annabeth reappeared in the dining hall and sat down.
"Well, let's try it." Percy said eagerly, not wasting any time. Piper nodded and stood up gesturing for Percy to do so too.
"Annabeth get ready to catch him in case he falls." Annabeth nodded and moved into position behind Percy. Piper took a deep breath and stared directly into Percy's eyes.
"Gaia, show yourself!" She demanded, putting as much charmspeak into the words as she could, which was quite a lot. For a second nothing happened, then Percy's eyes burned red. His mouth twisted into a cruel smile, which seemed wrong on his face, so normally cheerful. A deep laugh echoed around the room, and Hazel noted with horror that Percy was making the sound.
"Hello children." the voice said slowly, "So glad you can see my new form." Again the unnatural laughter rang around the room, bringing goosebumps to Hazel's arms. Piper spoke again, momentarily stunned by Gaia talking through Percy.
"I command you to leave, and never come back! Leave!" For a second it seemed as though it would work. Gaia said nothing and Hazel thought she was about to leave Percy's mind. She waited for Percy's sea green eyes to come back. Then Gaia spoke again.
"Foolish children. You thought you could charmspeak a primordial?!" Percy-no, Gaia laughed again. "I thought you were intelligent. I-" Gaia was cut off abruptly by a yell of anger. From Percy. His eyes changed back to their normal color and he stood hunched over, gasping for breath. He turned as pale as a sheet and sweat beaded his brow. He had to grab onto the table to keep balance. After a minute or so he stood upright, bringing a hand to his forehead and wincing.
"I-I'm okay... I managed to gain control." he said, softly.
"Seaweed Brain!" Annabeth hugged him. "Oh gods... that was... Styx." Annabeth mumbled. "Percy. What do you mean, you gained control? Did you get her out of your head?" She asked hopefully. Percy immediately dashed that hope.
"No, I... I'm not really sure what I did, but I'll try to explain." He gestured towards the three empty chairs at the table and they both sat, along with Piper. Percy took a deep breath and started talking. "So, when Gaia comes out you all know that I can hear, see, and feel everything. There's this place in my head that I go to. It's a mind scape I guess, I don't really know. Anyways, usually it's... I don't really know how to explain this... it's like I'm restrained or something. I can struggle, although barely, and it's exhausting. The first two times it happened, I guess her hold was weak because it was easier to get control back, but this time... It was... I almost passed out. I felt even more tired than I had when I had the Curse of Achilles." Leo interrupted.
"Hold up man. Used to have the Curse of Achilles? First off. Holy Hades man! Second, isn't that like, a lifetime thing." Percy nodded.
"Usually it is, but it washed off after I crossed the River Tiber. Hera told me it was a Greek blessing. Anyways, it was like I was being held back by cable wires. She's getting stronger. I don't know how easily I'll be able to get rid of her next time..." Percy finished softly, his eyes staring intently at the table. Hazel watched Percy worriedly, unsure of what to say or do to help. Percy shook his head distractedly and attempted a smile.
"Well, we should probably get back to what we were doing. I'll take watch." And with that Percy walked out to the night.
So this is the third chapter! And I finished it in like one day because I really did not want to work on my project at that moment for Core so yeah... Okay so it was probably stupid to write a chapter from a POV of a character who has like one line the entire chapter but.... Oh well! I know the ending was kinda suckish too but I got minor writers block at the end and I could not for the life of me figure out how I wanted it to end. But it's done and published now so yeah... Anyways thanks for reading the story guys and if your actually reading this authors note then sorry for rambling. I tend to do that a lot. Not really much else to say.... Expect an update next week hopefully! Maybe I'll get lucky and we won't have to start with the Science Fair stuff for a couple more weeks although I highly doubt it. Anyways I'll just stop here and save you the misery of reading about me. Bye!!!
