Mirror of Erised
Nicole was walking down the mostly empty corridor, looking for Teddy. She turns towards a curious looking door she had never seen before. Her curiosity gets the best of her, and she enters the room.
She finds Teddy standing at a mirror that instead of reflecting back him, reflects back the people from the photo she found in his pocket so long ago. Teddy has his hand on the mirror and she can see bits of the old photo between his fingers. She immediately runs up to him and sees his eyes are full of tears, and his face is wet. He doesn't take his eyes off the mirror to speak to her.
"What do you see?" He moves over gently so he is out of the mirror's view, and she reluctantly steps into it.
"Um, I see..." She turns her head to the side, regarding the mirror. She sees a young blue haired boy with his parents, laughing.
"Um, the same thing you do. I see you and your family, happy and together." Teddy shakes his head and laughs a breathless laugh.
"No, you don't. I know what this is. It shows you what you desire most, but you don't have to tell me what you see if you don't want to." Nicole turns around and lays her hand on his cheek.
"No, that is what I see. Teddy, this thing isn't helpful. I've read about it as well. People have rotted away in front of this. Let's go." Teddy rubs his eyes, and nods. Nicole lifts both his hands and smooths out his fists. She gently takes the crumbled up photograph out of his hand and puts it in his pocket. She leads him out of the room with both his hands in hers.
She takes him to the virtually empty library where it's quiet. They sit on a soft couch and Nicole rubs her thumb in circles on his hand.
"Are you okay?" Teddy drops his head into her shoulder.
"I talked to Harry, almost a year ago, about my parents. I remember he told me that they died so I could live in a better world, but I think I would rather have them." Nicole lays her head on Teddy's shoulder, and thinks of something to say.
"Teddy, I don't know how to make you feel better. I'm so sorry you had to grow up without your family, I know you would kill to have them in your life. I think the only thing you can do is not try and do this alone."
"The worst thing is I don't have a single memory of them." Nicole didn't know what to say to that. She just held him, and it hurt her so much that she couldn't help. She began to think of the Mirror of Erised and how she saw Teddy happy and with his family. She wondered why, and she realized, that in the moment she looked in the mirror, she wanted nothing more than for Teddy to be happy.
"Nicole, can I tell you something?" Teddy looks up with shiny, wet eyes. He stares into hers.
"Of course."
"I think I love you." Nicole was so surprised, Teddy had said the last thing she expected to hear. Despite her surprise, she felt her face curl into a huge grin.
"Nicole, I am broken. And I don't ever want to have to put myself together again. I want you to do it." Nicole rests her head on his shoulder again.
"Oh my darling, it's true. Beautiful things have dents and scratches too." They sit like that for at least an hour, but it feels like seconds to both of them.
