A Brand New Light

Harry sat on the train, alone in a cart. Ron decided not to come back to Hogwarts for their seventh year, and Hermione was catching up with Neville and Luna.

He was on the train back from the Burrow. It was nice to spend Christmas with Ron, but things were awkward between Ginny and himself. Also, Hermione stopped coming to the Burrow, since her and Ron's breakup. They were still friends, but not as close as before. They were stupid not to see that it would never work. That they were better just friends. Harry knew from the beginning that it would never work out between those two, although he would never say it to their faces.

The cart door slid open, startling Harry and interrupting his train of thought. He expected to see Hermione, but instead it was Draco Malfoy.

"What do you want, Malfoy?" Harry's feelings toward Malfoy had not changed since the war, he still felt a hatred towards him, but they had not spoken since the war. He notices that Goyle is not with him, then suddenly remembers the death of Crabbe. Harry was more than a bit curious to hear what Malfoy had to say.

Malfoy moves silently and sits down on the bench across from Harry. He stares over Harry's left shoulder, he looks as if his mind is far away.

"Um, you want to say something, or just sit here and stare at the wall, Malfoy?" Draco looks at him, as if just noticing him.

"Yes... I think so... I just want to say... I guess, I'm sorry. For... Everything."

"Wow, Malfoy. Didn't think you were much of the apologizing type." Malfoy's gaze returns to the wall above Harry's left shoulder, and his eyes glaze over with a far away look.

"Neither did I," he mumbles just loud enough for Harry to hear. After a moment he stands up and walks away.
                          ~~~~~
About an hour and a half later Hermione comes to the cart.
"What's wrong, Harry? You look troubled." She sits down across from him and gives him a worried look.
"Have you gotten a visit from Draco, since the war?" Hermione suddenly looks awkward and begins to wring her neck.
"Yes, actually. He came to me after Potions class. I'm not sure what's gotten into him lately, but he just apologized to me. Neville and Luna said he did the same thing to them."
"Why did no one tell me?" Harry gets slightly frustrated. Secrets are a bit of a touchy subject for him. He never much enjoyed his friends keeping secrets from him.
"Well, it didn't seem like it was very important. It mostly slipped my mind, anyway. I was a bit busy with my studies, you know what it's like... But why do you bring it up? Did he come by while I was gone?"
"Yeah... He seemed really distant. When he came in, it was like he didn't even notice I was there. I had to get his attention."
"Yes, well, some hard things happened to him. His father is in Azkaban, his mother is not in the best shape right now, and just to add insult to injury, people are being rude to him at school. I also heard some people saying his grades were going down, so it must be really effecting him. I'm  sure a lot of things are on his mind."
"Yeah, I guess..." I mumble. "Anyway, how are Neville and Luna?" Hermione immediately brightens up.
"They're great! Their relationship is going steady. They spent this Christmas with Luna's father, which I think is really sweet. Luna said her father was very excited that Luna had someone besides him. He definitely approves. Isn't it so sweet?"
"Yes," he mumbles. "Definitely. I'm very happy for them." For some reason he couldn't take his mind off Malfoy. Maybe he had changed? He obviously isn't friends with Goyle anymore, or many other people, going by what Hermione said. At first, Harry hadn't considered that maybe he really was sorry, but... Who knows? There was definitely a chance. He wasn't being sarcastic when he apologized, but there is no way to tell if it was sincere.
Harry decided to give him a chance. If Malfoy wanted to  strike up a conversation, Harry would give him the benefit of the doubt, and refrain from nasty comments. Besides, he probably had enough people doing that, already.
