Chapter Two: Royals

"Lyanna, focus!" Robb said sharply as he hit her on the shoulder with the wooden sword they were practicing with. Lyanna shook her head, trying to get a grip of herself.

"I'm trying, Robb," she sighed. They had been practicing for three hours straight and all the others had left them, even Ser Rodrik, who was meant to be training Lyanna.

"Try harder!" He snapped at her, picking up the wooden sword she had dropped seconds before and threw it to her. She caught it and immediately lunged at him with it.

Robb didn't see her coming and she nearly caught his chest but he batted her sword away with his and they began duelling again.

Relax a little," he told her, his own tone sounding relaxed. "You're too tense and you'll never win a fight whilst you're on edge,"

She did as he advised and went to poke him in the chest again. Robb hit her away but his block failed and, after all the hours of work, she finally caught him. Lyanna smirked as Robb dropped the fake sword and raised his hands in surrender. He was laughing for the first time in hours, all the tension from her lack of concentration gone.

"Finally," he smirked, before turning to Theon, who was cleaning Lord Stark's blade. "A few more sessions and she could take you on,"

Theon smiled his signature cocky grin before saying, "I'd like to see you try, Snow,"

"Do you want to go now, Greyjoy?" She questioned him cockily, even though she knew she would easily be beaten.

Theon shook his head. "Nice try, Lyanna but you would lose miserably,"

Lyanna glared jokingly at her father's ward before throwing the sword to Robb. "I'm done for today," she said, walking away before he could say anything.

Lyanna headed to her bedroom where she had left her Dire wolf. When they had found them, her's and Jon's were the runts, with tiny little bodies. They had all grown a lot in the two weeks that had passed, especially Lyanna's, though it's coat and eye colour always made her seem smaller. She had decided to call her wolf Winter, as a reminder. A reminder that winter was coming and a reminder of what her father had said the day they found the litter.

When Lyanna reached her room, she saw Winter curled up on her bed on one of the furs blanketing the bed. Lyanna sighed, collapsing onto the furs next to Winter, who immediately got up and began licking her master's face.

Lyanna played with the small wolf for a while before there was a knock on the door. She shouted for whoever it was to come in to see it was Sansa, followed by Sansa's own wolf Lady.

"How was needlework?" Lyanna asked her.

"Enjoyable and easy, well, not for Arya," Sansa said quietly whilst the two wolves sniffed each other. Winter bit Lady's tail and the two began play fighting. Sansa pulled Lady away carefully, not wanting to get bitten herself.
"How was your practice?" Sansa asked politely. Lyanna couldn't remember Sansa ever raising her voice to anyone but Arya.

Lyanna shrugged, something which Sansa would never of done. "Hard, but Robb and Ser Rodrik are good teachers. I'm enjoying it more than the Septa's lessons, Arya would be so jealous,"

Sansa nodded understandingly, despite not agreeing with Lyanna's training just like her lady mother. Lady Stark, though she never liked anything Ned's bastards did, strongly disapproved of Ned's agreement with Lyanna, and she was not afraid to voice her opinion.

"Ned, she may be a bastard but she is still a woman!" she had told him sharply after they got home and her father had told his wife his deal with Lyanna.

"She has had lessons with the Septa since she was five, I think she would know by now if she is a woman or not," her father sighed at Catelyn.

"It's not about knowing weather she is a woman, it is about being ready for marriage," Catelyn argued to both of them.

"If No highborn man will want me to marry him or his son," Lyanna cut in, which made Catelyn glare at her.

"Marriage or not, you should still train to be a lady," Lady Stark said to her angrily, now directing her anger at Lyanna.

"I can be a lady at the Wall," Lyanna muttered quietly, playing with a strand of her hair. She hated it when Lady Stark shouted at her. Lyanna preferred it when she just ignored her.

Catelyn glared at her once more before turning her back on her and storming out.

Lyanna replayed the moment over in her head for a while before she turned back to Sansa as her sister began to speak.

"Father said the royal party should be getting her in a few hours," Sansa said and Lyanna noticed the excitement in her tone. Lyanna knew that she was ecstatic to meet Prince Jeoffrey, unlike Lyanna who cared more about meeting the King and the Queen's brother Tyrion Lannister.

Lyanna was a small child when the war finished fourteen years ago, so she couldn't remember Robert, who their father spoke so fondly about. She had also heard good things about Tyrion Lannister, the dwarf of Casterly Rock. Ever since she had been told about the upcoming royal visit, Lyanna couldn't think of anything but meeting both the dwarf and the king.

"Great, I can't wait to see the king," Lyanna told her sister.

"I'm more excited for Prince Jeoffrey, they all say he's really handsome," Sansa cooed, which made Lyanna want to roll her eyes. Lyanna knew that Sansa was still young - eleven, in fact- but she was very naïve when it came to matters like the prince and the southern cities. Lyanna knew that Sansa hated it in Winterfell and would like nothing more than to go to King's Landing.

"You should get ready, you can't let the prince see you in your fighting clothes," Sansa said before taking her leave, Lady following her.

Lyanna sighed, before closing her bedroom door. She looked at Winter, whose head was cocked to the side, looking at her mistress inquisitively.

"Did you know that I hate dressing like a lady, Winter?" Lyanna sighed to her wolf, looking in her wardrobe at her dresses.

After what felt like forever looking over outfits she finally picked out a long grey dress with a black fur cloak. She pulled it on after cleaning herself up, noticing how many bruises and cuts she had picked up during the last few months. She brushed the knots out of her hair, shaking her hair out of the tight pony tail it hadn't left for the past two weeks.

When she decided her appearance was acceptable, Lyanna headed downstairs, leaving Winter in her room, to find her siblings. On her wa down she saw Lady Catelyn talking with Maester Lewin. The Maester had always been kind to her except Lady Stark hadn't, which made Lyanna feel very uncomfortable, even more so when she began talking to her.

"You and Jon are to stay away from the royal party, Lyanna," she said assertively. "You are to stay behind us when they arrive and you are not to sit with us at the feast tonight,"

Lyanna nodded. She could have argued with her, but decided that it was better to stay on her good side. "Of course, my lady," she smiled kindly.

Lyanna kept walking until she got to the court yard. She saw Theon, Jon and Robb, all wearing furs and they all looked clean shaven. Lady Stark obviously wanted them to look smart, not shaggy. The three of them grinned seeing her.

"You three scrub up well," Lyanna laughed.

Theon smirked at her. "Same to you, Snow. I'd almost forgotten that you were a girl, since all you've worn for the past few weeks was just fighting clothes,"

Lyanna would of made a remark about how she almost forgot he was a Greyjoy in all is furs, but she knew that would offend him. Though he could probably not even remember Pyke and he had been Ned's ward that long he was practically Theon's father, Theon was a proud Greyjoy.

Instead of responding how she would of, Lyanna simply smiled and said "I think I'll look better in black when the time comes,"

"If the time comes," she heard her father say as he stood behind her. She spun around, grinning at him. "But your training is coming along well,"

Lyanna grinned but there was not enough time to respond to him as the rest of the Starks arrived on the scene. Sansa walked alone whilst Lady Stark walked with Bran and Rickon. They all started forming in lines, waiting for the arrival of the king. Lady glared at Lyanna and Jon which they took as a warning to stay back. Jon grabbed Lyanna's arm and pulled her between Theon and himself.

"How come Hodor gets to stand ahead of us?" Lyanna whispered to Jon and Theon who both laughed in a hushed manner. Though she loved Hodor, the simple-minded stable boy, Lyanna thought it was unfair that Jon and her had to stand behind their family but he got to stand with them and he wasn't even a Stark.

A few minutes passed and finally Lyanna's father noticed someone was missing.

"Where's Arya?" he asked, looking around. He turned to Lyanna who shrugged, something the Septa would have scolded her for. That was when Arya came running towards them all.

"I saw them!" She called excitedly. "I saw the royal party!" Lyanna laughed at her sister, who had somehow found a armoured helmet.

Lyanna tuned out what they were saying and focused on the fact that the king of the seven kingdoms would be in Winterfell in seconds. She was eager to see him, even if Catelyn had told her to stay away.

Just as she was thinking about it, she heard multiple horse shoes clanging against cobblestones. Lyanna felt her heartbeat pick up in excitement as she saw the first horse ride into the courtyard.

It was the king.

As soon as he rode in, everyone got onto their knees, including Lyanna. She looked down at her leather boots, realising she had put on her training boots instead of her clean ones. These were worn and muddy. Though they couldn't be seen, she felt herself blush in embarrassment.

She saw from where she was knelt that the king was dismounting his horse. He had probably changed a lot since their father had seen him last as Robert was not how he had been described. He was fat, not sporting a soldiers body anymore. He had a beard, which their father had never mentioned. Fourteen years had obviously taken its toll on him.

Lyanna saw him walk towards her father and beckon him to stand. Ned stood, looking his king in the eye before saying "The North is yours, your Grace,"

Robert looked him up and down before saying "You got fat,"

Lyanna held back a snigger and she could tell Jon was doing the same. Even though they could not see his face, Lyanna could tell that her father was subtlety glancing down at the King's stomach. She heard them both laugh and saw them embrace like the old friends they were.

With the king's permission they all rose back on their feet. Lyanna watched as Robert embraced Catelyn, and was introduced to each of the Stark children. Lyanna couldn't help but smile seeing him interact with her siblings.

After he had spoke to each of them, she heard Robert turn to her father and say "Where are your bastards, Ned? I haven't seen them since the war ended,"

People moved out of the way for Lyanna and Jon to come forward. Lyanna took in a deep breath and walked with her back straight, as a lady should. For now, Lyanna had to be a lady, not a girl training to go to the Wall. Lyanna forced a feminine smile onto her face as she came towards the king.

"This is Jon," their father said as they came forward to face the king. "And..."

"Lyanna," Robert cut in, smiling at them both.

Lyanna and Jon both nodded their heads in respect to him. "Your grace," they both said respectfully.

"You were barely even two months old the last time I saw you," he smiled at the two f them. Lyanna and Jon both smiled back at their king whilst his wife, Queen Cersei, came out of her carriage with Princess Myrcella and Prince Tommen.

"Take me to your crypts, Ned, I wish to pay my respects," Robert said, turning back to their father. He obviously wanted to go see where their aunt Lyanna, his original betrothed, was buried. Lyanna respected him properly for that.

"We've been riding for a month, my king, I'm sure the dead can wait," the Queen said. Lyanna didn't like her already.

Robert ignored her and walked off in the direction of the crypts with their father, leaving Lyanna, Jon and the rest of the Stark's with the royal party.

Lyanna didn't know it then, but that meeting with the king would change her life.
