Chapter Sixteen: Loss

It had been six months since since Lyanna found out she was pregnant and she had slowly adjusted into life in King's Landing. She still longed to go back to the north and to see her brothers, but she knew that, as she was Joffrey's wife, she could always ask for a visit. Even if he didn't want her to, she couldn't be stopped when she was queen.

For the past few days, rumours had been flying around about Lady Stark taking Tyrion Lannister as a captive. They were only rumours, but part of it seemed like it would be truth. Lyanna had no idea why she thought that, but she didn't spend much time dwelling on it, as there was another rumor flying around; her father had resigned as hand of the king. She wasn't sure if this was true either, but she never got chance to ask him, as he was never around long.

That night, Joffrey ran his hand up and down Lyanna's bare back as they laid in bed together. Lyanna could see the sun beginning to set over King's Landing through the silk curtains. She could hear the singing and shouting from the streets and knew that it would be a noisy night; she hadn't had a good nights sleep since she had gotten to the rats nest of King's Landing.

Her stomach had swelled quite a lot over the last five months and it had gotten on her nerves. None of her clothes fit anymore and she couldn't train because the bump was in the way. Joffrey seemed to love her bump though. He had his hands resting against it while he kissed her, and though she was exhausted she was kissing him back, her hands holding his neck as they laid side by side. When they were like that, he seemed much easier to deal with.

There was a loud knock at the door, like a fist was banging against the heavy oak. Lyanna pulled away, glancing at the door, knowing that it had to be important given the time, though before she could get up and answer, Joffrey put his hand on her cheek, moving her face for her to look at him.

"Ignore it," Joffrey muttered. The knocking persisted to the point where they couldn't ignore it anymore.

Lyanna sighed, pushing Joffrey away from her as she struggled to get up, her bump weighing her down. She grabbed the white night dress which she had thrown on her dressing table chair a few hours previous and pulled on over her naked body before slipping a black cloak over it. She opened the door to see Vayon Poole, her father's steward. His face was a picture of nerves which told Lyanna straight away that something was wrong.

"Poole, what's wrong?" she asked, frowning at him.

"Tell whoever it is to piss off,," Joffrey called to her, making her flush red from annoyance.

"Its your father, my lady," he gasped out to her, Lyanna's heart flipping slightly at his words. She felt the babe inside her kicked at her and her hand went to her bump immediately. "He's hurt badly. One of the Kingslayer's men put a spear through his leg,"

Lyanna heard Joffrey get up and stand behind her. "That is my uncle your talking about, do you want your tongue cut out?"

"Joffrey!" Lyanna exclaimed, spinning to face him. "Didn't you hear what he said? My father is hurt and you think now is the time for threats?" She glared at him before turning back to Poole. She saw his face look over hers nervously and she knew that there was something he wasn't telling her. "What are you hiding from me Poole? There's something you aren't telling me isn't there?"

"Jory... he's dead," his words hit her hard and she felt a pain in her chest as she processed his words. Jory, why did he, of all the people, have to die? She had always liked Jory and they were always friendly with each other. She had always felt closer to him than to anyone else in her father's household staff.

"How did he die?" She asked, anger in her voice. She felt tears threaten to appear and she didn't dare try to stop them from falling. When Poole didn't answer her, she felt the anger grow inside her and furious tears flowed down her reddened cheeks. "Where's my father?"

"The maester is tending to him, my lady, I'll take you to him," Poole said gently to her.

As Lyanna began to walk out to follow Poole, Joffrey grabbed her arm. "You aren't going, see your father in the morning, you have to come back to bed,"

"Fuck off Joff, he's my father! You expect me to just sit by, not knowing what is happening?" She shot a glare to him before turning and walking out of the room, following Poole to her father's quarters.

"My sisters, do they know?" She asked quietly, wiping her tears away with her hand.

"No, my lady, they were both already asleep in bed and the Septa wouldn't let me wake them to tell them," Poole said, which made Lyanna feel sick. Their father could be dying and Sansa and Arya still thought all was right with the world.

"I'm going to wake them," she said, her voice shaky from grief, turning and walking in the other direction.

"My lady!" he called after her, but she was too engrossed in finding her sisters.

She ran to where she knew her sisters rooms were, despite the bump slowing her down considerably. She was almost ashamed at how she was right now; slow, large, unpractised at fighting. It had been four months since she'd practiced fighting properly, when she'd once again talked Jory into fighting with her, and that was only because he didn't know about her being pregnant. If he had, he wouldn't have fought with her, he wouldn't have actually made her feel the happiest she had felt for almost seven months previous, he wouldn't have ended up forgetting about his blade and start to wrestle with her. She felt a pang in her heart at the thought of Jory, the memory of them wrestling together, Lyanna laughing more than she had done in a long time.

When she reached Sansa's room, she wiped the tears from her face, took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down slightly. When she decided that she was caml enough to speak without bursting into tears, she walked quietly to Sansa's bed, sitting on the edge. She reached out and gently shook Sansa's shoulder, hissing her name. It took a few attempts to wake her sister but eventually Sansa stirred, sitting up groggily.

"Lyanna? What's wrong? Is it Joffrey?" She mumbled sleepily and Lyanna sighed; of course her first question was about the prince.

"It's father, he's hurt, we need to go see him now, but we have to wake Arya first," Lyanna said slowly, not sure if her sister was actually awake or if she was still half-unconscious.

Once Sansa had processed what Lyanna had said, she jumped out of bed quickly, flooding her with questions, already on the verge of tears. Lyanna swore she saw Sansa stumble slightly as she tried to put on her robe quickly, which was almost funny, as her sister was normally so graceful and elegant, never tripping over her own feet.

Lyanna felt the child inside of her kick, hard. Her hand jumped to her stomach, still watching Sansa as she hurried out the door. She knew she should follow, but the kick had scared her more than it should have. She found out two months after the babe had been conceived, and in seven months it had never kicked that hard. She tried to shake it off, running after Sansa, but the thought of her child lingered in the front of her mind.

The two of them rushed to Arya's room, Sansa much slower than Lyanna, as Sansa hardly ever ran; it was unbecoming of a lady, or so Septa Mordane said. Arya had been known to lock the heavy oak doors to her bedroom, but that night the were unlocked. It was obvious when they got into Arya's room that she had not been asleep long, as the fire was still burning in the corner of her room, as well as the candles on her bedside table.

Lyanna accidentally stepped on a loose floorboard, which creaked. The creaking woke the youngest Stark girl, who jumped out of bed, flourishing out a long, thin sword at her sisters. Sansa screamed in shock and backed away, already shouting abuse at Arya, whilst Lyanna sniggered at them. That moment almost reminded her of countless days at Winterfell, where Sansa and Arya didn't do anything but argue. A kick from the child inside of her reminded her, though, that this was not Winterfell, and a lot worse things were happening right now than endless bickering.

"Lyanna, what's wrong? Is it the baby? Are you having in now?" Arya asked them all in one breath, so fast that she had to think for a second about what she had said.

"No it's not me, I'm fine," Lyanna muttered, walking closer to her sister (or cousin, as she had to keep reminding herself, even though she found out the truth over five months ago). She took the hilt of the blade out of Arya's hand and laid it gently on the bed. "Father's hurt, we need to go see him now,"

"Is he going to die?" both Sansa and Arya said at the same time. Lyanna shook her head, though it took a lot of energy to convince herself of that. She lead her sisters out of Arya's chambers and down the corridor to her father's room. The younger Stark girls threw questions at her, none of which she wanted to answer.

As they reached her father's quarters, Lyanna noticed Winter, laid by the door. She was wimpering like she was the night that they set Lady free. The three girls knelt by the dire wolf, who paid them no attention, unlike how she normally was. The normally rather playful dire wolf pup seemed to be almost mournful. Lyanna remembered reading something about one of the ancient King's of the North, back in the time before Aegon The Conqueror. The King's son had a dire wolf of his own, and when his father was dying, the wolf stayed by the King's side for a month straight and when he died, he spent another straight month howling. Was her father dying? Was that why Winter was here now?

As they were knelt by the wolf, worry running though Lyanna's mind, the old, frail maester opened the door, and nearly jumped out of his skin with shock at the sight of the dire wolf. Lyanna rose to her feet, forcing a small smile on her face.

"Lady Lyanna... I was not expecting you to be here, especially with your... wolf," Lyanna almost saw his mouth form the word beast in place of wolf.

"My father..." she began, but was cut off by the kicking again. If anything, this kick was harder sharper. It hurt more than the others and knocked the breath out of her. She stroked her stomach gently, trying to make herself feel calmer, but it wouldn't work.

"Is resting right now, it would be best if you came back on the morrow, all of you," he said in his slow, droning tone which made Lyanna want to slice her own throat, never mind his.

"Fuck that shit," she muttered, glaring at the maester. She rolled her eyes, before pushing past the feeble old man.

Her father was laid on the bed, his leg bandaged and propped up on pillows. From where she stood, he looked like he was merely sleeping, but as she got closer, she saw that he looked pained. She remembered once when she was training, she cut Theon's leg and the cut was almost serious. It hurt him, a lot, but somehow, the look on Theon's face when he felt the blade slice into his leg didn't compare to how her father looked now. The strong lord who had raised her had somehow been overshadowed by a weak feverish appearance. The way he looked now scared her, and part of her believed that she had been lying to Sansa and Arya about their father not dying.

'I can't lose him,' She thought to herself as she sat down on one of the couches next to the bed. 'Brandon Stark is my real father and he's dead. I can't loose another father, not now, not ever'. For once, as Lyanna took hold of her father's sweaty hand and wrapped another arm around her two sisters as they sat next to her, Winter jumping onto the couch with them, she was tempted to pray to the God's.

First update of 2016!

I can't believe this story is over 1K already! I'm so happy and thankful!

I'm very sorry it's been a while, but I've been working on a new fic! I posted it two weeks ago and I love it a lot so far. It's called Flying Solo and is a Star Wars fan fiction to fuel my new obsession (I cried so much seeing The Force Awakens!) You should totally check it out right now, and don't forget to have a look at my DW fic Travels With a Time Lord, which hit 2K at the same time this hit 1K.

I hope you guys liked this chapter, so please comment and vote and stay tuned for the next chapter!
