Chapter Forty Eight: The Battle of Yunkai
Lyanna was late, she realised as she walked into the tent, followed by Winter. The wolf split from her as soon as they got into the tent, running for the hills to hunt and play with the dragons who were flying high in the sky. Whilst Dany's dragons were the size of small horses, Rey was still the size of Winter, growing slower than the rest, the runt of the group, not that it stopped her as she attempted to tackle Drogon in the sky. Her smaller size made her easier to train, which meant that she was smarter and better behaved than the other dragons.
"Sorry I'm late," she muttered, taking her place next to Ser Jorah and Ser Barristan. Daenerys was distracted, Darrio Naharis standin behind her, their hands interwinded as he pointed out something on a map they were all looking at. Distracted to the extent she didn't notice Lyanna's presence in the room.
"Here," he said, guiding her hand to gesture to a point on the map. "It's a back gate, my men use it when they visit Yunkai's bed slaves,"
"Your men, but not you?" Ser Jorah raised an eyebrow.
"I have no interest in slaves," he shrugged it off. "You can't make love to property," Lyanna noticed Daenerys hiding a blush at his objection to slavery.
"You reject slavery, but yet still call them your men? Isn't that objectification in its own right?" Lyanna pointed out, raising her own eyebrow. He brushed her comment off with a small laugh.
"This is where we enter the city, very few guars, they know me, they'll let me inside," Darrio continued. It sounded like he had it all planned out already, so what was the point of this meeting? He couldn't just worm his way in after one night, it wasn't right.
"We can't bring an army into the city through its back gates," Ser Barristan objected before Lyanna could get the words out, so she nodded in agreement.
"I'll kill the guards," Darrio shrugged. "I take your two best men and lead them through the back streets, then we open the front gates,"
"Or you'll kill us and then take the Yunkai gold you were promised initially," Lyanna glared at him.
"When did I mention you in this plan, Wolf Girl?" Darrio turned to face her, smirking slightly.
"You didn't, I just thought two best men, Ser Jorah and Grey Worm, and the best woman, me, considering I could disarm you in a second," She looked him square in the eye as she spoke.
"I doubt you could, but if you can disarm me, then you have nothing to worry about," he looked back at her, attempting to intimidate her. It wasn't working. "But you'll be staying here. The sight of severed heads upset you enough, a battlefield is no place for a woman,"
"This camp is no place for you but yet you're still here, I'm going with you, whether you like it or not," she glared back at him.
"Lyanna goes with you, I trust her and her skills for this," Daenerys interrupted, clearly irritated at their arguing.
Lyanna almost felt ashamed of annoying Daenerys. Almost. Part of her hated her aunt for just accepting the Second Sons into their party so quickly, especially Daario Naharis, since all he did was act like Dany's sole advisor. He found her beautiful, like everyone else. He just wanted to get into bed with her, he was just like every other man who'd seen a pretty girl, except Dany was a queen. Dany was a Queen, and no matter what she said about family, Lyanna was one of her Queens Guard, and she would protect her at all cost, even if that meant standing in the way of Darrio Naharis.
"Lyanna," Dany said, catching her arm as she began to walk out, following everyone else, the meeting now over.
"Yes, your Grace?" Lyanna remembered when Lord Stark was annoyed with Robert Baratheon and he addressed him by his title. That's just what she was doing now.
"Be safe out there. I don't want to lose you," she smiled, letting out a sigh as she let go of her arm. "Look after Ser Jorah and Darrio, I don't want them fighting amongst themselves in a battle, it's too dangerous,"
"If you could fight you could have come with us and kept watch over them yourself," Lyanna tried to keep her tone from being bitter. "I'll do my duty and fight for you, my Queen, and if I don't come back, I'll see you in hell,"

The city was quiet. As they stood at the back gates, Lyanna could hear dogs barking, and she was glad she didn't have Winter with her, as the wolf would have been howling back at them; she, despite her appearance, was a sociable animal. The silence was helpful, as Darrio explained, as it would allow them to hear his signal.
"When you hear a song birds whistle you come, I'm a great whistler," he smirked, once again trying to show off.
"Lets hope you can fight as good as you can whistle then," Lyanna glared at him, watching as he walked off, before turning to Ser Jorah. "He's going to get us all killed,"
"Have faith," Ser Jorah said, though he himself didn't sound like he had faith in this newcomer to their party.
Lyanna heard them talking, Darrio to the guard, who greeted him like a friend, and then the noise of the doors opened. Lyanna couldn't help but feel bad. Sure the guards were of Yunkai and would kill them, but they sounded like they trusted Darrio, and Lyanna couldn't help but feel like they were betraying that trust, even if it was only small. She hated this, she hated to be a part of betraying someone, even if it meant that Daenerys had a stronger claim to the throne. And so, Lyanna bit her lip, squeezed her hand around the hilt of her sword, one that had been gifted to her a long time ago, the one she named Avenger, her other hand on her bow, slung across her shoulder, her quiver full of arrows sitting on her hip. If she could get to high ground, she could clear out a few Yunkai soldiers whilst Ser Jorah, Grey Worm, Darrio and the Unsullied took the ground. Or, she could fight with them with her sword, the way Robb taught her...
The bird song whistle.
It was time.
Quickly but quietly, Lyanna and the two men made their way to the gate, running around the corner. Ser Jorah had his sword drawn, and so Lyanna did the same, pulling Avenger out of its scabbard, and as they turned the corner, Lyanna stayed close to the wall, swinging the sword out in front of her as she turned, in case of Yunkish soldiers. However, as she came into the courtyard, she saw two dead bodies, the guards, and Darrio Naharis, sat on a crate in front of them, cleaning his blade. He was over-confident, and that could get them all killed. What if soldiers came through and he was unprepared?
"That was easy," he smirked, standing and moving towards the rest of the group. Letting out a small laugh, he ruffled Lyanna's hair, which was tied back into two braids twirled into buns at the back of her head. "Relax, Wolf Girl, there won't be any more guards, the Yunkish prefer slaves to do their fighting for th-"
Darrio was cut off by the noise of heavy armour hitting the ground and the grunts of soliders voices. In that moment, at least fifty soldiers ran in, surrounding them. The four of them backed into each other, weapons pointing out. This was Lyanna's first battle, real battle. This wasn't training anymore. These men weren't Robb, Jon, Theon, Cayn or Jory, all who would make any injuries minor, who after the fight would grin at her and clap her on the back. Those were her brothers and her friends. These men were genuine threats, who wanted to kill her.
"Good job we didn't relax," Lyanna snapped at Darrio, who looked like he was enjoying himself too much for a fight.
As soon as she finished saying the words, she remembered what Robb had said so many years ago. 'You can't win a fight when you're on edge'. Lyanna immediately loosened her shoulders, took a deep breath, and pushed Robb out of her mind, only remembering the lessons he taught her.
Battle wasn't how she imagined it. It was quicker, more chaotic. The Yunkish forces had them surrounded, and every so often one would strike out. It was so fast Lyanna could barely remember one moment from the next, all she knew was that this was life or death; her life, their deaths.
Lyanna could remember killing two. She could remember ducking out of the way of the swing of a sword. She could remember cutting through the wooden spear poles pointed at her and then slashing at their owners. What she couldn't remember was how her lip split, or how her arm was bleeding, or how there was a gash on her forehead seeping blood.
Between the four of them, twenty Yunkish soldiers were dead, they were all spread out more in the courtyard, and eventually, Yunkai would win, if they didn't manage to get the Unsullied into the city. Lyanna looked around. The three men looked busy, too busy to notice that soon more soldiers would be coming in to try and kill them. Well, maybe they noticed it, but chose to ignore it. Lyanna didn't want to ignore the impending doom of their deaths, she wanted to get rid of the threat.
Lyanna ducked as a Yunkish soldier aimed for her head, thrusting her dagger as she went down, cutting across the lower half of his stomach before running. Darting in and out of the crowds of soldiers, slashing her sword and dagger as she went, eventually she got away from the fighting. As she got to a back alley, she slid her sword away into its scabbard, putting the bloody dagger back into the holster on her back, swinging her bow off her shoulder and knocking an arrow onto the string, drawing the string back, reading to shoot in a moment. She kept low, hiding in the shadows until she got to the gates, guarded by four soldiers. Drawing her string back she aimed and fired, her arrow finding home in the chest of one guard, and before the other three could react by calling for support, she'd fired two more, pointing a fourth arrow at the last guard.
"Open the gates!" She yelled in Valeryian. She just hoped her accent was good enough for him to understand her. He nodded quickly, hoping his life would be spared as he lifted the barriers, unlocking the city gates. The gates swung open and the armed unsullied's stormed through. "Thank you," Lyanna forced a small smile as she let the last arrow fly.
"Unsullied!" She called, raising her now in the air, calling out to Dany's troops. "This is Yunkai, they want to write you back into the slave system, they want to kill you, and they want to kill your Queen! What should we do about that? I say we take this city! Whilst slavery exists we are all slaves, so let's go and break the chain!"
There was a shout of agreement from the troops as Lyanna raised her bow again, using it to point in the direction of the courtyard, where she was certain more Yunkish troops would have gathered. Whilst the Unsullied took the ground, Lyanna climbed onto ledges, directing them from above, making sure that she had eyes on Dany's troops as they reached the courtyard.
As they reached the courtyard, Lyanna climbed onto the wall surrounding it, looking at the scene below, only to see that Ser Jorah and Grey Worm were still fighting, whilst Darrio Naharis had been wrestled to the ground, struggling against a Yunkai soldier. As much as Lyanna wanted to see the smug smirk wiped off his face, that wasn't the same thing as watching him die. So, instead of letting her despised comrade die, she took aim and shot his attacker through the back of his head. Darrio jerked slightly, jumping from the sudden shock of the weight of his attacker folding over him. He threw the body off of himself, jumping to his feet, meeting her eye, his face turning from cocky to anxious and sincere as he nodded to her as a thanks.
That's where she stayed for the remainder of the battle, shooting down their enemies troops. She moved around the wall, taking different angles as the Unsullied sacked the city. Soon, the Yunkish threw down their swords in surrender, the slaves of the city running out of their holds, the masters trying to flee. Lyanna caught the masters in their attempt; she caught them with her arrows. At their deaths, that was the end of it, Yunkai was Daenerys'.
The party led the Unsullied back to the camp, Lyanna holding her bow, swinging it with pride. She'd killed people, but she wasn't going to let that bother her for the moment. She wasn't a killer, she was a conquerer.
"Wolf Girl," Darrio addressed her on their walk back. "Thank you... You saved my life, we'd all be dead if not for you bringing in the Unsullied, so... Thank you,"
Now it was Lyanna's turn to smirk. "You're not used to showing gratitude are you? But you're welcome,"
