Chp 126 - Hazel's POV
A/N: Am I lazy af and used dozens of time skip? Yes, get ready for it. I wrote a week and half for Hazel, if I wouldn't use time skip, I would never finish it. In the end it gets thinner and less detailed? Yes. Why? BECAUSE I COULDN'T STAND THIS CHAPTER ANYMORE! It was ENDLESS! And for the gods' and goddesses' names, I decided to use other form of their name, if possible. It'll be easy to recognize, no problem. Btw, I have no idea if the party Hazel is going allows underage, and I couldn't find this info anywhere, so just pretend it does for the sake of the fic. Warning, long chapter ahead, more than 9k words.
TUESDAY
"So, are you going by bus or plane?"
Lucy's question snapped Hazel back to reality. She and Nico shared a look, before he shrugged and answered.
"We haven't chosen yet."
"What do you mean by that?"
"That we haven't chosen."
"So you bought both tickets and are gonna choose on the day?"
"No, we haven't bought any ticket yet."
This caught Niel's attention, that was too busy staring longingly at Claire until then.
"You said you guys are traveling, right?"
"Yes."
Niel shook his head.
"No, you're not."
Nico looked almost challenging.
"What makes you think that?"
Lucy slapped both siblings on the shoulder.
"There's no way you can get a ticket in last second. You were supposed to go tomorrow!"
Hazel furrowed her eyebrows in concern.
"Do you think there's no more tickets?"
"Have you ever traveled near Christmas?"
Is it bad?
It's... busy. Sorry, it didn't even cross my mind to warn you.
Nico was reluctant to answer.
"Yes?"
"By what, teletransportation? Just snap your fingers and you're there?"
Nico and Hazel shared a quick glance and both were thinking of shadow travel, Nico's favorite mean of transportation. Lucy kept talking, waving her arms around.
"You need to buy a ticket in advance! We're not a small city, but there isn't endless buses and planes taking off at each minute."
Hazel smiled sheepishly at her friend.
"So, what do we do now?"
Lucy and Niel held each other's gaze, like mentally communicating. It still puzzled Hazel how they could argue so much and still read each other's mind; which proved her point when both nodded at the same time, before Niel spoke.
"Road trip!"
"What?"
"We're not the only city in the universe, there are others cities around. We're gonna take you there."
THURSDAY
Hazel rubbed her eyes and yawned, using the limited space of the backseat to stretch her arms.
Would you mind if I fell asleep in here?
Tired?
It's barely six in the morning, of course I'm sleepy.
Lucy leaned forward and punched Nico's shoulder, who was riding shotgun, which earned her a death glare. In response, Lucy fake yawned.
"What? Was I supposed to be scared? I have VANESSA as my captain. Trust me, SHE is scary. You just look like a cute pouting kid."
Niel was driving and snorted, trying to conceal his laugh at Nico's shocked expression. Lucy ignored both guys and started to pat Nico's hips, who pushed her hands away.
"Wow, WHAT in Hades' name are you doing?"
"Trying to find your phone, what else? I'm bored and want to listen to music."
"Then why do you need my phone?"
"Duh, to connect with the aux cord. So. Phone."
Nico ignored her outstretched hand and fished his phone out of his pocket, connecting with the cord Niel was offering. He played random playlist, and Hazel was shocked with the song that came out, since it didn't sound like something either Nico or Nanni would listen.
*Welcome, M'sieur
Sit yourself down
And meet the best
Innkeeper in town*
At her side, Lucy was smirking when Nico turned on his seat to glare at her.
"You changed all my songs!"
"Who, me?"
"Who else!?"
Hazel leaned and tried to read over Nico's seat and shoulder.
"What is it playing?"
He checked his phone for the name.
"You added a MUSICAL to my playlist!"
Lucy waved her hand dismissively.
"I did nothing of the sort."
"Well, then HOW do I have Les Miserables playing on my phone?"
That got her attention.
"Is that what is playing? Les Miserables?"
"You should know, you put it there!"
"Of course not."
"Then how..."
Lucy pointed to the driver's seat, and both Nico and Hazel turned to see Niel, who was very involved in soloing the musical.
"Comforter, philosopher, and lifelong mate! Everybody's boon companion. Everybody's chaperone."
Lucy crossed her arms, with a smug look on her face.
"Like I said, I didn't. Les Miserables is too boring for me."
Niel's tried to glare at Lucy, and wasn't really successful, since she hid behind his seat and both Hazel and Nico screamed for him to pay attention at the road. He complied, but his humor darkened, and he grumbled an answer.
"You take that back."
Lucy propped her chin on his seat.
"Now, if we're talking about Priscilla..."
Hazel asked before Hannah could explain.
"Who is Priscilla?"
Niel looked at her through the rearview mirror, and answered at the same time as Hannah.
"It's a musical."
It's not a who, it's a what, a musical.
Hazel jumped when Lucy screamed at her ear over the music already playing.
"IT'S RAINING MEN!"
Niel cringed.
"Please, stop. You sound like a dying whale with a cold."
She furrowed her eyebrows before grinning and screaming at his ear.
"HALLELUJAH!"
Nico tried to put a hand over her mouth, but she just swatted it away.
"TALL, BLOND, DARK AND LEAN!"
Nico looked helplessly at Niel.
"Isn't it 80's song or something?"
Lucy leaned to grin widely to him.
"THAT is the beauty of Priscilla! Full of 80's classics! Next song!"
Nico disconnected the aux cord.
"No more songs!"
Lucy squinted her eyes at him, like sensing a challenge, before screaming again.
"FIRST I WAS AFRAID, I WAS PETRIFIED!"
Hazel scooted closer to her window, while her brother tried to launch at Lucy, only being stopped by his seatbelt.
This will be a long trip.
But amusing.
True that.
***
Lucy held Hazel's hand and asked in a whisper.
"Hannah? Are you ok?"
Hazel tried to nod, but she didn't have the energy.
"Hannah, you're getting pale."
Lucy was looking at her worriedly, and tapped Niel's shoulder.
"Barnacle..."
His voice was annoyed when he answered without taking his eyes off the road.
"What now, Wench?"
I'm feeling sick...
Let her know!
"Lu..."
"Barnacle! Stop the car, NOW!"
***
Nico glanced at her over his shoulder every minute or so. Hazel was now with her head over Lucy's lap, who kept playing with her hair and passing a small towel soaked with cold water on her skin.
"Your stupid girl. Why didn't you warn me you get carsick? I always do, so I had extra medicine!"
Do you get carsick?
No, do you?
I never had. Seasick, yes. Though I'm not used to long car trips like this one.
***
Hazel got in the backseat and scooted closer to her window to let Lucy get inside. Niel turned to the girls.
"So, any tickets?"
Hazel shook her head, while Lucy answered.
"Only for the 27th. Let's hit the road again."
***
Nico was scrolling on his playlist, probably trying to find something he liked.
"Who added Phil Collins?"
Niel shrugged, shaking his head. Lucy pointed a finger to Nico, with her eyes narrowed.
"Hey, respect Phil Collins!"
Niel looked at her surprised.
"YOU like Phil Collins?"
"No, my dad likes. It's his favorite soundtrack for road trips. And I only added a song."
"Which one?"
"True colors. Excellent lyrics. Put it on."
Nico answered with a blank stare.
"No."
For some reason unknown to Hazel, Lucy spoke in a very low and raspy voice.
"Tell me, do you feel tickles?"
That was his only warning before Lucy attacked him.
***
"Barnacle."
Niel ignored her, drumming his fingers on the wheel.
"Barnacle."
Niel reached and turned the music higher. Lucy almost screamed in his ear.
"Barnacle! You either find me a bathroom or I'm peeing in your car!"
***
The loud guitar almost blew Hazel's eardrums. She moved her hands to cover her ears, while Lucy and Nico fumbled to turn the volume down.
WHAT was that?
Hazel slowly moved her hands, moving her jaw and humming to test how much damage the loud music had caused.
"I think just lost my hearing."
Nico was copying her in the front seat, just like Lucy. Niel was the only one not disturbed.
"Who added metal?"
Lucy shrugged at Nico's question.
"Not me. Barnacle?"
Niel shook his head with an expression of mock disappointment.
"It's not metal, Sticks, it's PIRATE metal. Pay attention to the lyrics, you'll enjoy it."
Hazel payed attention like the others, and sure enough, the lyrics were pirate inspired, even if she couldn't understand half of it.
*Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Arr - yarr - ahoy and avast dinky-dink-dink - a - dinkadefast!*
Lucy scrunched her nose in disapproval.
"There is something like PIRATE metal? REALLY? That is the stupidest idea I've ever-"
She avoided Niel's hand when he tried to give her leg a slap.
"Everything gets better when it has pirates."
Lucy murmured to Hazel, so none of the boys could hear.
"That's debatable."
***
"Niel?"
"Yes, poppet?"
"Can we please find a bathroom?"
"Already? What about two hours ago, when we were forced to stop because the Wench threatened me? Why didn't you go then?"
"I know, and I did. I'm sorry."
Lucy nodded her head in sympathy.
"It's the ice tea."
"No problem, we're stopping, right, Niel?"
Nico's voice didn't leave space for discussion, though Hazel doubted Niel wouldn't stop.
***
Hazel tried to stop Lucy, but it was too late. She was already standing on outside of Niel's window, pounding on it with her wrist, jumping awake both boys.
"Wake up, sleepyheads! You can sleep on your plane, Nanni. Let's get moving."
Nico stepped out of the car groggily.
"You got a ticket?"
Lucy snorted, impatient.
"What do you think I am, stupid? I have a contact with the main drug dealer in town, who is engaged to the pilot's sister, so he said that if we are able to stuff you in a bag, you can go in the baggage line and fly for free!"
All three of them kept staring at her, who rolled her eyes.
"What? He made a stupid question, he deserved a stupid answer. Let's get moving, peeps!"
***
Hazel checked her seat belt for probably the seventh time in the last two minutes. Her hands were sweaty, and Hannah's nervousness added to hers didn't help. The only other time she had flown was going to Alaska with Frank and Percy. It wasn't a terrible experience, but it was their only option. Truth be told, with her father and powers, if she could choose, she rather stays in the ground.
What if the plane falls?
Calm down, Hannah.
I'm trying, I swear I am.
Just... try to breath.
But you're not comfortable yourself.
I... don't like much of the air or the sea.
Completely understandable. The sea makes you sick.
And I'm vulnerable in both of them, always from the earth I can control. I'm not as bad as Percy though. Annabeth said he feels sick with just the idea of getting inside a plane.
Because his dad is Poseidon?
Yes.
Oh. And your brother? Is he also scared of flying?
I'm not sure...
Hazel turned to look at Nico beside her. He had his eyes closed, and was breathing deeply. She could've thought he was sleeping, if he didn't look paler than normal and had a couple of sweat drops rolling down his temple. She lighted touched his arm and he flinched, but didn't open his eyes.
"Nico? Are you okay?"
"Uhum."
"Do you need something?"
"Nuh-uh."
"Are you SURE?"
"Uhum."
She held his face with both hands and forced him to face her.
"Open your eyes and look at me."
He complied, and she could see the fear imprinted on them.
"Just... try to calm down, Nico."
"I hate flying. Even on a Pegasus. I never really had a pleasant experience in flying. And I never stepped on a plane, never had to. I could travel anywhere through the shadows."
"I know."
"We aren't made to be in the air, sis."
"I know."
"I know too much about death in airplanes to be calm about staying in one."
She flinched, but didn't give up.
"We've faced worse."
Nico chuckled humorlessly.
"Which proves how messed up are our lives."
"Maybe if we held each other's hand? I'm nervous too."
He nodded and took one of her hands from his face, before returning his head to the previous position and closing his eyes, breathing deeply. Hazel mimicked him and tried to relax. The pilot's voice letting them know they would take flight soon made both squeeze their hands.
Everything will work out. Everything will work out.
You have flown already, right?
Yes. Not one of my best memories. We almost crashed in the ocean because of a storm.
I understand.
Hazel decided it wouldn't hurt to join Hannah in her mantra.
Everything will work out.
Everything will work out.
***
At some point, Nico had fallen asleep, and jumped scared when the pilot turned on the warning to fasten their seatbelts. Hazel finally breathed in relief when the plane touched the ground. She was thanking every god she could think for no storms, even if she wasn't sure if they were listening. Nico was mumbling something she couldn't catch, slumped against the seat, finally relaxing. Knowing her brother, he could either be thanking or cursing the gods and Fates for the successful flight.
***
After losing themselves in their airport, more times that should've been possible, they finally had their baggage, with Nico being a stubborn gentleman and carrying both. Walking out, they found a man in a chauffeur attire waiting for them, holding a sign written 'Nanni di Martire'. Nico had found his confidence again when they touched the ground and walked to the man, nodded a compliment and handed both her and his baggage. He held her hand and they followed the chauffeur. Some people obviously stared, but one glare from her brother and they would mind their own business. The limo was comfy, even if excessively flashy for Hazel.
For someone who can summon riches from the ground, you like to keep a low profile, right?
I guess so. Demigods as a rule aren't riches. Actually, we are attacked so much, that the most common thing in a mission is to lose our bags with food, clothes and money. So, we end up starving, torn and dirty clothes and no money. It's weird to get an airplane and then a limo, with perfect clothes.
But what about the diamonds you summon? Can't you use them as money?
Cursed, remember?
Oh, right, I'm sorry.
And I live in the legion. We have to share with our cohort, not get privileges.
***
Hazel stepped out of the limo, and could feel her hands starting to shake. Meeting a god, even if he was her father, always made her a little skittish; however, now she had no idea of what to expect. Hannah wasn't much better. Actually, she was worse, her thoughts going over her mind so fast Hazel wasn't able to get what they were saying. Nico felt their tension and gave her a half hug with a kiss on the side of her head.
"It will be okay. We will be by your side all the time."
Hannah shut up, calming down while Hazel inspired and squared her shoulders, facing the massive mansion in front of her.
"We're good. Let's go."
***
Hazel didn't know what she expected, but helping her step mother and her mother setting the Christmas tree wasn't in her list of possible outcomes of the meeting. The moment she and Nico stepped in the living room lead by their chauffeur, fifteen minutes ago, they found both women arguing about the best way to decorate the tree. Hazel wasn't still sure how, but both Nico and the chauffer vanished into thin air, leaving her alone when the older woman turned to look at her, with a scowl.
"Well!?"
Hazel swallowed and tried to keep her expression neutral when both glared at her.
"What?"
"Tell her she's being unreasonable! Hibiscus doesn't go well with dried corn, sunflower fits so much better; and there's more than enough gladiolas!"
"Uh..."
The young woman huffed annoyed.
"There can never be too much gladiolas, mother, don't be ridiculous. And you already put dried wheat, no need to add corn too. You know my husband doesn't like the smell of it."
"It's dried, there is no smell!"
What is wrong with glass balls and lights?
I can see them in that box in that corner.
Exactly, why not use them?
"Stemmed lotus would look good. I can dry it."
"Mother, you're NOT taking my lotus from my pond!"
"What about corn stalks?"
"No."
Hazel raised her hand timidly.
"What about hanging glass balls?"
Both women looked at her, before the older one answered while tapping a finger on her chin.
"That is actually a good idea. I have a set of artichokes that can be hang."
"Mother, dahlias would fit better."
"What is wrong with artichokes?"
"They're artichokes!!"
And we're back at square one.
***
When Nico finally decided it was safe to show his face, almost two hours later, Hazel was somehow sitting in the couch, with a cup with hibiscus tea and biscuits, her hair braided and decorated with red and green bunny tails, chatting with Demetra and Persefoneia, the living room and the tree decorated in a mix of traditional ornaments, dried grains and fresh flowers, somehow in a harmonic mix. He cleared his throat and she glared at him.
And they promised to stay by our side all the time!
Precisely.
He had the decency to look a little guilty, but they were quickly distracted by their step mother, who had finally noticed him.
"Oh, it's you. I had no idea you were coming today."
"Good to see you too, step mother."
"He needs to eat; he looks thinner and more breakable than dried wheat."
Persefoneia shrugged.
"Then feed him."
"I can make a porridge with the best grains there is. He will gain some weight in no time."
Nico paled and looked at Hazel for help. She focused on her tea, pretending not to see.
Let him taste his own medicine and face both women at once.
He deserves it.
***
Hazel had a soft heart, so after Nico was forced to eat half of porridge, which took around one hour of Demetra threatening him, she went to save her brother, saying she needed him to show her her room.
He looked relieved and guided her until a room. Large, enough to fit an apartment, it had a soft color of yellow on the walls, and fluffy carpets on the floor. The bed looked big enough to fit all the Hypnos's kids, and comfy enough to be part of their dreams. Her baggage was already there, closed, thankfully. She would hate for someone to mess her things.
"And where is your room?"
"Two doors to your left. And I think that door over there leads to your bathroom."
Wow. This place is... big. To say the least.
Why does it have to be so big?
Status?
***
Her father had an emergency meeting, or so they were told. Nico had to endure Demetra trying to stuff him with health food, while Persefoneia talked to Hazel about her garden, offering to take her there so she could practice drawing exotic species of flowers.
She is nicer than I thought.
Considering it's likely they were already married when your parents met...
How old do you think she is?
I don't know, but I'm guessing she's older than she looks.
Like looking like twenty but being closer to forty?
Something like it. She looks young, but she doesn't act like someone in their early twenties.
She likes us, but I don't think the same can be said for Nico. Or Nanni.
I don't think he likes her either.
FRIDAY
Nico knocked on her door so they could walk together to breakfast. Thankfully, they were the only ones at the table, so they could relax.
"So, what do we do today?"
"We can walk around LA if you want. You've never visited, right?"
"After you dropped me at Camp Jupiter, I stayed there. And I honestly think I'd have never been able to get there on my own. Truth be told, I couldn't exactly leave the legion to act as a tourist."
She smiled and he nodded, nipping his bread.
"Sure, so we do that. Put on comfy clothes and shoes; we can leave as soon as you get ready. Maybe we should start with Hollywood."
I never thought I would get a brother and walk around Hollywood all in less than 3 months.
If you think three months is a short time, you would get crazy of how fast things happen in demigod world.
***
Hazel felt only a little bad for dragging Nico all over Hollywood to sightsee. At first, their chauffeur, Mathis, drove them around. But at Hazel's pleading eyes, Nico accepted to accompany her on one of those Starline Tours. Since it was December, the temperature was nice, nothing too hot. The sun was out, but there were a lot of sparse clouds, which would give them a break once in a while.
Change back to French!
Hazel changed the narration coming from the headphones, laughing along with Hannah. Nico refused the headphones, but listened intently every time she decided to share an information. At first, they caught a different bus as an accident, but soon it became a habit. It annoyed them every time someone mistook them for a couple, but Hazel couldn't really blame them; they looked nothing alike and walked around hand in hand. Nico gave some people a rude answer before she pulled him away.
It still amazes me how big this all is.
But the romans don't make big structures too?
We do, but we make for a whole legion. And not a five-floor house with twenty bathrooms to a family of four.
"Want to eat something?"
Since it was way past noon, Hazel turned to Nico and nodded her head.
***
Karabagh Meat Market and Deli wasn't impressive at first, but the Nico promised the food was worth it. Most of the workers looked oddly at her, before talking between them in a different language.
Is that... Russian?
How do you know?
I don't, I suspect.
"Nico..."
"Let me deal with them."
He walked over to the counter, and beckoned of the workers far from Hazel, before he started talking with the old man, a scowl on his face. First they were hushed, but soon, both started waving his arms around and speaking louder, enough so Hazel could listen.
Wait. Why is Nico speaking Italian?
I thought you said they were speaking Russian?
I thought so.
Nico gave the man a short nod before walking back to Hazel with a smile. She raised an eyebrow.
"What were you doing?"
"Ordering our food."
This made her raise both eyebrows.
"In Italian?"
"They speak English."
"So why did you speak Italian?"
"I started and finished with English. What I spoke in Italian is not important. It's the way I did it."
Like a mad man?
Hazel chuckled.
"Scandalously?"
"Passionately. Let's just eat, okay?"
***
After devouring their kebabs, they walked around the market, picking some snacks.
"So... what language were they talking? Russian?"
Nico nodded, reading the back of a package.
"Mostly Russian and Armenian."
"Armenian? During the Roman Empire, there was a number of generals and leaders with Armenian background."
"Yes, they still have some similarities with Italians, even if not much."
***
Mathis drove them home, but guided them to the back door. At Nico's questioning, he answered it was so they could shower and get ready before facing their father, who was waiting in the living room. Hazel gracefully thanked him, before running to her room to do just that. Fifteen minutes later Nico knocked on her door, so they could go down the stairs together. Their father was standing, like waiting for them. The black suit had a shiny on it that captured and bended the light, like the souls confined to his robes did on her world. He didn't smile, but his face morphed into something Hazel could describe as relaxed, and his eyes almost looked like a mix between relieved and happy.
"Hannah, you became a beautiful young lady."
His voice was oily like Hazel remembered, but she could feel the care behind it. Hannah was thinking and feeling so much at the same time Hazel made what she could to separate their minds. She didn't want to intrude or get a headache for too much information.
"Nanni, and how are you?"
Nico gave a little squeeze to her hand, before taking a step forward to speak better to their father. She got his meaning behind the action and tried to focus on Hannah.
Hannah?
He knows who I am. He knows me. He really is my father, right?
I believe so.
We don't look alike.
You look like your mother, right?
Yes. Oh God, I have a father.
How do you feel about it?
I... I don't know. What should I be feeling?
I don't think there is a right answer. Each one reacts differently.
I mean, should I think this is positive or negative?
Whichever you want.
"Sis? Come closer."
She straightened her posture and walked to stand next to Nico, before they both sat in a couch, opposing to their father. Áïdos gave her a small smile.
"Tell me, how was school?"
... Really? That is his first question? Like he is a regular father who has been talking to me everyday?
He has to start the conversation somehow. Do you have a better idea?
How about apologizing for ignoring me all these years?
We can get to that later. If my experience help, the best way to deal with a god is to dance along their music.
He's not a god, he's my father.
Who probably has a complex of god.
"It has been good. I have some friends in it. It was actually how I found Nanni."
Áïdos nodded, even if reluctantly, before intertwining his fingers, resting his chin over them.
"And how did you two suspected you might be related?"
Ops.
Hazel shared a look with Nico, neither one had planned that far ahead. They couldn't exactly say about themselves. Nico cleared his throat and turned back to their father.
"I... uh... once heard her complaining she was afraid that... uh... she didn't have anyone to back her up or to warn her if her lawyers tried to fool her. I said I was used to deal with lawyers and offered her help."
The man in front of them didn't change his posture, but his expression turned from curious to skeptical.
"YOU offered to help a stranger?"
Apparently, he knows Nanni isn't the most social type either.
Oh, I have an idea! Repeat after me!
Hazel shifted in her seat to attract his attention, and wet her lips before using Hannah's idea.
"We weren't completely strangers. We have three classes together and were doing an assignment for one of those. We were getting close, almost as friends, so when he learned I was... distressed, he felt the need to offer help."
Nico nodded in agreement, and took charge again.
"When she showed me the letter of the lawyers, I thought I recognized the name, and did some research. Since it was only suspicions, I decided to bring her here. If she wasn't my sister... well, she would be here as my friend. Unless... you oppose to the idea of me bringing friends over?"
Áïdos smiled tightly. He knew Nanni was lonely, so any friend would be welcome. Hazel felt the intensity of his eyes when they were focused on her again.
"Have you been enjoying Los Angeles?"
***
Already on her bed, Hazel kept looking to her ceiling.
It wasn't that bad.
It wasn't that great either.
Things don't magically work out, Hannah.
I know, I know...
It was only the first day. You are hurt after so many of years of neglection. That's okay. He understands this too. Maybe it will get better. Maybe it won't. You can only know if you try. Maybe you'll be able to open your heart, maybe you won't. Still, you HAVE the chance to try, which was more than you had a couple of months ago. Never regret the things you did.
Only the things I didn't do.
Exactly. Tomorrow is a new day, and who knows what the future holds us?
Hopefully, no porridge.
Hahahahahahahahaha.
But Hazel, you saw that! It looked disgusting!
I know! Thank gods Ceres didn't force us to eat that.
Ceres?
Right, Demeter. I mean, Demetria.
You'll end up messing a name or two.
Yes, I know. I'll have to be careful.
Good night, Hazel.
Good night, Hannah.
... And thanks for being by my side.
You're welcome.
Hazel slept with a smile on her face.
SATURDAY
For Christmas' Eve, Áïdos joined her for breakfast, along with his wife and mother-in-law. Hannah kept praying that Demetria wouldn't force them to eat the porridge. They made small and meaningless talk, until her father offered to take her out to keep getting to know Los Angeles. After a quick debate with Hannah, she agreed. Persefoneia said she would join them only for the ride, because she had some last-minute shopping to do. Hazel felt her phone vibrating and sighed. She hated using that thing.
N: Hi. Is the coast clear?
H: What do you mean?
N: Is Demeter still in the breakfast table?
H: Yes.
N: Curse her to Tartarus and back.
Does he hate her that much?
N: How am I supposed to have a nice breakfast with her trying to make me eat 'healthy grains'?
H: What is so bad about eating healthy?
N: I won't answer that. Help me out, sis.
H: What do you want me to do? I can't kick her out.
N: Snuck some food in a napkin and save it for me. I'll meet you outside.
H: Are you still in your room?
N: Yes. I'll meet you outside before we leave to do whatever you want.
H: Father and step-mother are joining us.
N: Is this serious?
H: Yes. Father wants to spend time with us.
N: And Persefone?
H: She has shopping to do.
N: Of course she does.
Hazel could almost see her brother rolling his eyes.
N: Fine. We meet outside ten minutes before so you can give me my snacks, and then we join them.
H: Would shadowtravel help now?
N: YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!
Hazel tried to conceal her laugh, and discreetly started to pile food in the napkin over her lap.
***
Nico was stuffing the last pastry in his mouth when their father walked outside, with his wife following close behind. Áïdos raised an eyebrow questioningly at Nico, who looked like a chipmunk with his cheeks stuffed.
"Why weren't you at the table during breakfast?"
Nico shrugged, avoiding his father's eyes. Persefoneia sighed bored.
"Can we please just go? I don't have all day."
Her husband exhaled in exasperation.
"So why don't you get a car for yourself? It's not like we have only one."
Hazel almost flinched when she heard him.
Oh God. Is he really THAT stupid?
The beautiful woman's expression morphed from bored to thunderous in less than a second.
"You're saying you don't want your wife's company?"
Hazel felt a small sympathy for her father, who took a deep breath, buying time to answer.
"Dear, that is not what I said..."
"So WHAT did you say?"
Nico was just moving his gaze from one to another, still chewing, but VERY silently.
"I meant... it was nothing. Let's just get going. Nanni, Hannah..."
"Oh, so now hurting my feelings is nothing?"
Hazel grabbed Nico's hand and ran to get Mathis. The sooner they got to the car, the sooner Persefoneia would get to her shopping spree and let them go.
***
Their stepmother was still a bit upset when they split up. On the way, Nico made the mistake of trying to defend his father, and the woman threw herself in a rant about how he was 'just like his father, insensitive, self-centered, too blunt and acting like a caveman' and how much she pitied Hannah 'for being stuck with a father and a brother who couldn't care less about a woman's heart' and how 'they both should start paying more attention to those around them, or they would one day die alone' and so much more. Hannah paid half of her mind to the speech, only so she could know if the right answer to whenever Persefoneia would ask for her support should be 'yes' or 'no'. So when the woman left, father and son slumped against the leather covered seat in relief.
Looking from here, they are scarily similar.
I know, even the timing.
***
I wonder if father was ever touched against his will.
Why?
Don't you see? Dad is like Moses splitting the red sea, people just give him space.
That much is true.
And I doubt anyone has ever tried pickpocketing him.
That would be...
Suicidal?
I would go for risky.
His face screams 'suicidal'.
***
Hannah enjoyed her day more than she expected. Áïdos wasn't the touching or warm father, but he was caring. Hazel could see how he was trying hard to make her day pleasant, and after some time, Hannah started to warm up to him. She didn't love him like a dear father, but she allowed herself to admit she enjoyed his company. As for Hazel, it was a different experience, casually hanging around her brother and father, acting as a tourist, without the fear of monsters or quests.
***
She wasn't sure if they did it on purpose, but when they finally got home, it was almost midnight; they got to avoid Demetria and Persefoneia, who were already asleep. Hazel wished them a good night, before going to bed herself.
SUNDAY
Hazel.
Haaaazeeeel...
Hazel!
HAZEL!
Hazel woke up with a jump, looking everywhere and reaching for a weapon that wasn't there.
Hannah? Did you wake me up?
Yes. It's CHRISTMAS!
Oh. Okay. Just... give me a few minutes.
***
After a few minutes of debate, she decided to go to the living room in her pajamas. She could hear Nico before she could see him.
"NO! I REFUSE!"
"Nanni..."
"Don't try it, father. You wouldn't eat that disgusting grub, so don't even try convincing me."
The porridge again?
I think Demetria was serious when she said she wanted to feed him.
The moment Persefoneia met her eyes in the door, she clapped her hands loudly to interrupt the others' argument.
"Good! Hannah is here, we can start to exchange gifts!"
Hazel felt dread coming from Hannah running in her veins.
Oh, dear. Oh no. We haven't bought ANYTHING!
Calm down, Hannah.
We are supposed to exchange gifts, but we don't have anything to offer!
I'm sure they don't mind.
But I mind!
... What if we leave to buy some gifts?
NOW? We don't have the time!
Not now. Maybe tomorrow. It would be late, but at least it would be better than nothing. What do you say?
I don't know...
"Hannah? Where did you run off to?"
Hazel blinked and looked to her stepmother, who was handing her a neatly wrapped gift. Hazel accepted with a small smile, just a little bit guilty for not having anything. She sat on the couch to unwrap it, and was pleasantly surprised when she found a long-sleeved dress inside, dark blue with small wave white pattern and golden buttons. Under it, she found white wool stockings to match.
That is beautiful!
"I thought you would like something nice to wear in Christmas' lunch, that is why I left yesterday to shop. It's already washed, you can change anytime you want."
Hazel stood up and gave her stepmother a hug.
"Thank you!"
***
Hazel was carefully drying her hair with a towel, so it wouldn't float in every direction. She was wearing the outfit Persefoneia gave her, which fit perfectly. Demetria gave her ankle boots to match, along with a pack with an assorted of dried fruits and grains. Their father on the other hand, gave them a golden necklace and a set of five pendant, with different designs and stones used to composed it, beside three pairs of earrings. She chose the apple pendant, with the ruby earrings to match. Nico had given her a new backpack and a set of 250 color pencils, which thrilled Hannah. Hazel checked herself in the mirror one last time, moving a strand of her to the side.
Ready for Christmas' lunch?
Excited, even.
Then let's go.
MONDAY
Hazel shook her brother's shoulder again.
"Nico. Nico, wake up."
Since he was with his face buried in his pillow, she suspected the grunt he gave her was his way of saluting her.
"We need to go."
This made him raise his head and try to focus on her.
"Why, anything wrong? Did someone say or do something? Just say the word and I..."
"I want to go shopping."
"... Whaaaat?"
She rolled her eyes and shook his shoulder again.
"Come on, I told you yesterday I wanted to go shopping today!"
"When did you do this?"
"Right after lunch."
He groaned and rolled on his back.
"Hazel, I was so full after lunch I can barely remember what I ate for dessert."
"You ate half of the pudding."
"It was rhetorical."
"Get up anyway, I need you to take me shopping."
"Ask Mathis."
"Please, Nico?"
"Fine! Just give me five minutes. Better, give me twenty, I'll need five just to gather the courage to leave my bed to go shopping."
***
"Hazel, Hannah, this is LITERALLY the thirty-fourth store we visit. Can you two please pick anything so we can leave or at least have lunch?"
Hazel could almost feel Hannah mentally rolling her eyes.
It's easy for them to say, they already their presents. We still have to choose it.
"It's not that simple, Nico. We need to find something that fits them and fits our budget."
Nico's jaw fell, and a expression of pure disbelief came.
"THAT is what this is about? For gods' sake, use our credit card, but just CHOOSE something!"
***
It took Nico and Nanni more forty minutes, five calls to Áïdos (since Hazel interrupted the first four attempts, not wanting him to know what she was up to), two calls to the bank manager, another call to their father and answering a call from Persefoneia, who had called to ask if Hazel wanted a special dessert; to finally convince Hannah to use their credit card to buy the gifts. And another three hours to choose the gifts.
In the end, she settled for a pair of obsidian and silver shirt cuffs, with the image of a helmet for her father. For Persefoneia, Hazel gave the idea of using an ancient greek myth, and they bought a simple golden apple; it would work both as a gift and a compliment. For Demetria was hard, but they decided for a china set for breakfast, painted in fruits theme.
TUESDAY
"Haz-Hannah. Did you pack your bags?"
Hannah stopped with her fork in mid-air, to look at her brother puzzled.
"Why?"
"Because our flight is tomorrow?"
Already?
She lowed her fork.
"Already?"
But... I just met them. I barely know my father.
"When was this set?"
He swallowed before answering.
"Father bought our seats a couple days ago."
I don't wanna go. Not yet.
"Sis? Is there something wrong?"
Hazel shook her head to clear her head.
"No, not wrong, just... I wasn't expecting it."
"Is that your way to say you didn't pack?"
Why do we have to go?
"Hannah?"
Hazel raised her eyes to her stepmother, who had stopped eating to pay attention to their conversation.
"Yes?"
"You know you can stay more, right?"
"What do you mean?"
Persefoneia shrugged, sipping from her wine glass.
"We just change your tickets to a few days from now. Simple."
Should we ask her to do it?
I... I don't want to be a burden.
"Hannah, dear? Yes or no?"
"I don't want to trouble you..."
Persefoneia gave her a small smile.
"Of course is no trouble. If Nanni wants to leave, he can, but he can't drag you with him against your will. It's set, he goes, you stay until... when? The end of winter's break?"
***
After lunch, Nico disappeared with their father, only returning after supper with a smug smile he could barely conceal. Hazel squinted her eyes at him and got close to ask in a whisper.
"What with the smile?"
"Nothing."
"Nico..."
"I just... had a problem and now I have a solution, that's all."
"Nico... what problem and what solution?"
He chuckled and patted her hair.
"You'll see."
WEDNESDAY
"Last call to flight..."
Nico looked up in attention, before focusing on her again.
"Are you sure you'll be okay?"
Hazel sighed and patted his hand.
"Of course. Don't worry, I can take care of myself."
"What about Hannah?"
"She wanted to stay."
"Wanted?"
"WANTS. Just go, Nico. We see each other in a few days."
He gave her one last look before leaving. Hazel sighed and walked back to Mathis, who was waiting a few feet.
He's still reluctant to leave us.
He can be protective.
But we will be okay, right?
Her phone rang with a call from Persefoneia.
"Hello?"
"Hannah, where are you?"
Did she forget?
"... At the airport."
"What? But we changed your flight!"
"I know, I was saying goodbye to my brother."
"Oh, right."
"Why did you call?"
"Oh, I had an idea on how to spend tomorrow."
"Really? How?"
"We're shopping. You need a new wardrobe, clearly. I spoke to my mother, she agrees and is coming with us. It'll be perfect, I have it all planned it out and..."
I'm not sure we'll be okay anymore...
THURSDAY
There is NO WAY all this would fit inside my room, let alone my wardrobe!
I agree, she's overdoing herself.
"Hum, sorry, Proser... Persefoneia. But I don't need that many clothes..."
"Nonsense, we are just covering the basics."
How to explain... I live in a spartan way?
"Persefoneia, my wardrobe is not big enough to fit all those clothes..."
"Then buy another."
Only a filthy rich person to think it's that easy...
"I don't have that much money to spend in..."
"Your father is gonna give you a credit card, right? Buy with it."
"My room isn't big enough for two wardrobes."
"Then select one of the other rooms and turn it into a closet."
I don't even know what to say anymore.
WHERE does she think I live?
"Persefoneia... I only have one bedroom. I don't live in a mansion."
"Well, aren't you moving in with your brother? We could use someone to keep an eye on him, if those scars he tries to hid mean anything."
... What?
She knows!?
"How..."
"He's not as discreet as he likes to think he is. So, aren't you gonna live with him?"
Hazel didn't have an answer to that.
***
Hazel tossed in her bed for the hundredth time and checked the clock for the time before groaning.
It's almost 3am, why can't I sleep?
You're thinking about what Persefoneia said, right?
What exactly? You know she spent the day talking.
About we moving in with your... my brother? Well, them.
...
It's okay, I'm too.
What do you think of it?
I think it's complicated. You know him, but despite Nanni being my brother, I'm not close to him, not yet. I... maybe one day I'll move in with him, but not yet. I'm sorry.
I'm not worried about Nico. We're not staying here forever, and in Camp Half-Blood, things are different. I'm more concerned about Nanni.
I know. But I can't really be close to him while you're here.
I know.
FRIDAY
Hazel squinted her eyes to the sudden clarity, using her hands to rub away sleepiness. When she was finally able to open her eyes, she found Persefoneia in her room, searching among the bags from the day before. When Hazel shifted trying to sit up, the woman smiled at her.
"Good, you're awake."
Hannah?
...
Hannah?
...
"Hannah, I bought you a tennis apparel, right?"
HANNAH!
Ah! What!? What happened!?
Good morning.
Why did you wake me up? It's too early?
"Hannah, did you hear me?"
Hazel covered her yawn with a hand before shaking her head, still blinking to the clarity.
"No, sorry, what did you say?"
"I bought you a tennis apparel, right?"
She did?
...
Hannah!
What? I'm awake! What?
Tennis apparel.
What about it?
Did she buy it?
I think so.
Really?
Yeah, remember that dress you didn't want to leave the dressing room?
With that really short hem?
That one... just so you know, I'm mentally yawning.
"Yes, you did. It's in that... white bag with a blue trim. Why do you want to know?"
"Because we're playing tennis today and you're wearing it."
That line erased the last trace of drowsiness of Hazel's body.
"What!?"
***
Despite her concerns about wearing that short dress and trying to play tennis, the country club stole her breath away. Vast expansions of green hidden between the tall buildings was a nice change of scenario. On the drive there, Persefoneia kept trying to explain all the rules about attire and technology use inside the club for Hazel.
Well, I don't regularly use technology, so...
Yeah, for once you'll be in your element.
While Mathis parked the car, Persefoneia guided Hazel to the woman's locker room, where Demetria was already waiting for them. With no other option, Hazel changed to the pink and black dress, while thanking her skin color that didn't clearly show how embarrassed she was.
She doesn't expect me to play in this, right? I mean, it's bound to raise when I move.
I think that is exactly what she expects. And just your luck, today is going to be unusually hot and sunny, so you don't really have any excuses.
I'm not comfortable with this.
Neither am I, but I don't see a way out of this.
***
She has been awfully patient for the past hour; however, we should just face it: tennis is not for me.
I hate to discourage someone, but I think you're right.
Her stepmother smiled from the other side of the court.
"Come on, Hannah, you can do it, just focus and use your whole body instead of just your arm."
My shoulder hurts.
Do you think they have a masseur in this fancy club?
"Hannah, you have the serve, do it."
Hazel dropped the arm holding the racket.
"Persefoneia, I wasn't made for this."
The woman kept silent for half of minute, before smiling.
"Let's compromise. If you win one game, I'll let you go."
One game?
Which means at least four points over her.
Or six, if she's able to tie.
And another game if she wins this one.
That is an evil deal. Any idea how to win.
Maybe...
Hazel played poorly for the next hour and half, barely pretending to try, only watching Persefoneia. After her fifteenth lost game, during their water break, Hazel could see her stepmother finally showing signs of tiredness.
I admit, she's more fit than I expected.
But no one can keep forever?
Yes, and NOW we play.
Using her stepmother's tiredness in her favor, added to her notes about style and pattern, Hazel finally put some effort, and after being stuck in tie for 10 minutes, was able to close the game. Hannah's happiness could be mistaken for winning the match instead of just a game.
That was amazing! And it worked! She really didn't want to let us win, and we won!
A game.
We still won!
***
After lunch, Persefoneia dragged Hazel to accompany her and Áïdos around the golf course, while they played. For a miracle, Hazel was able to avoid it, claiming that her shoulder was too sore from tennis. The other players were her father's partners, some with their wives or children, all of them clearly used to money. One of the men was with his son of her age, maybe a couple years older. He was amazingly good at golf, and even offered to teach Hazel a few times, but she kept with the excuse of her shoulder. It was bad enough she had embarrassed herself in tennis in front of her stepmother, she didn't need to replay it in golf and with a bigger group.
***
Dinner was flawless, both food and service, just like lunch. For once, Hazel was thankful that Persefoneia had taken them to that shopping spree, and forced them to buy outfits that made them blend with this crowd, who clearly knew how to judge someone's clothes and worth in one glance. An uncomfortable feeling at the base of her neck made her discreetly look around her and find the guilty part.
That guy is staring at us again.
Who, the one from the golf course?
Yes.
Whose father is friend of ours?
Yes.
Are you sure he isn't checking on Persefoneia? She is quite beautiful and she was beside us during golf.
Hazel looked at her left, but her stepmother was nowhere to be found. After two minutes of scanning the hall, Hazel finally found her standing far away, in the middle a group of women with her age, all beautiful and obviously having a good time gossiping. Hazel lowered her eyes to find the guy still looking at her, despite her stepmother being just a few feet behind him.
Oh, great, he's really looking at us.
What are we going to do? Ignore him?
In that moment, still keeping his eyes on her, he stood up and started to walk to her. Hazel panicked and accepting Hannah's advice, ran to the woman's restroom.
How long can we stay in here?
Forever?
Wait, why are we hiding from him?
I don't know, because he looks like a creepy not taking his eyes off of us?
Hum. Makes sense.
Idea! What if we ask father to leave? Saying we have a migraine, or whatever? Maybe he'll get Mathis to drive us home?
It's worth the shot. Just make sure the coast is clear.
Hazel sticked her head out, cautiously looking for him, not finding.
He left?
Maybe. Dad is over there, let's go to him.
Before Hazel took her fourth step, she heard a voice behind her.
"Looking for someone?"
Hazel froze, and slowly turned to find the guy smirking.
"Hum, hi."
He grinned.
"Were you looking for me?"
"Hum, no..."
"Really? Because I was looking for you."
Hazel shifted uncomfortably.
"Well... I need to go over there and... hum..."
"Run away from me?"
Hazel closed her mouth, unsure of what to say. He raised an eyebrow.
"Am I wrong?"
Would he be mad if we said yes?
"Hannah?"
She turned to find her stepmother looking curious between the two teens.
"I was wondering if you wanted to go home, after all, we have a big celebration tomorrow."
She paused for a moment, and smiled with knowledge.
"Unless you want to stay a bit longer...?"
Hazel was quickly to shook her head.
"No, I was just about to look for you and ask if we could go home. I'm getting a headache."
Persefoneia grinned to the boy, but spoke to Hazel.
"We can arrange if you want to stay longer..."
"No! I'm good to go! We should be going!"
She didn't look behind while following Persefoneia, but could feel the guy's eyes on her back.
That was close.
She is my new hero.
SATURDAY
Hazel stepped out of the car, following her stepmother. She smoothed out her silvery blue dress, still uncomfortable with its size.
Think for the bright side.
Which is?
It doesn't have the low cut on back or front like Persefoneia's dress.
Don't even mention it, I'm embarrassed for her.
She doesn't look embarrassed.
Well, she has a confidence I don't possess.
Following her father, they stepped inside the W Hollywood Hotel, where they would spend the night. The luxurious inside stole Hazel's breath. Getting in the elevator to the rooftop, where the party would be held, Hazel braced herself for an endless night rubbing shoulders with tastemakers, celebrities and people with more money she could count. She stepped out of the elevator and her jaw dropped. The area surrounding the pool was marvelous. Orange, blue, and an occasional purple light created a magical atmosphere, the sound system blasting music and waiters weaving around the guest with different drinks.
This is so much different from whatever I experienced.
I know.
Aren't you freaking out?
If I would succumb to fear at any different situation, I wouldn't have survived living in your body, just saying.
Fair enough.
While she was distracted, her father and stepmother had disappeared in the crowd, but someone else had found her. The guy from the day before was walking in her direction, grinning.
"Look like you couldn't stay away."
Someone is arrogant.
I'm not one to be rude, but...
"It's hard to avoid someone when they are stalking you."
"Stalking? I call it fate."
"Good thing I'm not scared to challenge fate."
He cocked his head to the side, still grinning.
"You didn't look this sassy yesterday."
"Headache, like I said."
He laughed like she had told a joke.
"Right, headache, I'm Justin. You're Hannah, right?"
She shook his hand, still wary.
"So you were stalking me."
He laughed again, loud.
Is he drunk?
"No, I just payed attention when they called your name, as oppose to you. So, what do you want to drink?"
***
It has been less than two hours, and Hazel was tired already. Twenty minutes ago, she was able to escape from Justin and just go to a secluded area, looking over the panoramic view. She could see from the Hollywood Hills to the Iconic Skyline of DTLA.
I wish we were in bed.
I know how you feel.
Hazel closed her eyes, enjoying the breeze blowing through her hair.
Have you ever wondered what is happening to your real body?
Sometimes. I'm not sure if I want to think about it or no.
Why?
Of course I worry but... it's not like I can make anything. I can't even leave your body.
It'll be weird.
What?
When you leave. I'm almost used to have you here. Don't get me wrong, I want you to leave. Not that I don't like you...
I know. Trust me, I know.
It's just... I don't know how to explain. You know when you think something and want to talk to someone about it, or when you see something and no one else did? It's kind of refreshing to always have someone to talk to or that always see the same thing I did. I'm a little bit lonely, so this feels nice, to have company. I bet that I will try to talk to you in my head after you leave.
I like your company too, Hannah.
"And here I was thinking LA view couldn't get more breathtaking."
And here he is again.
Hazel didn't turn her head, just heard Justin approaching. He mimicked her, propping his arms over the railing. They kept silent for three minutes, before Justin felt the need to start a conversation.
"Enjoying the party?"
Hazel made a non-commitment gesture.
"In my own way."
"Which is?"
"Finding a quiet spot where I can be alone with my thoughts."
"Isn't it sad? To be alone?"
Can't he see it was a tip for him to leave?
"I think it's sadder to think you need company to be happy. The only person that will NEVER leave you is yourself. So, if you can't be happy with yourself, why do you think staying with someone else, that can go away at any time, giving you just a taste of happiness, is better than to learn how to be happy by yourself?"
"What makes you think like that?"
"I spent a great deal of my time completely alone, no one to talk to. I had to learn to make myself be enough."
They heard the DJ calling everyone for the countdown and left their secluded place.
***
It took almost ten more minutes until the actual countdown and Hazel was standing beside Justin. He refused to leave her side, and she had given up in finding her family. The others around her were obviously very happy and very drunk, yelling at the top of their lungs.
"FIVE!"
What do you wish for this new year?
"FOUR!"
New friends.
"THREE!"
New confidence.
"TWO!"
New peace of mind.
"ONE!"
New chances.
Before Hazel could understand what was happening, Justin had pulled her to a hug, and Hannah yelled on her mind.
LOOK AT YOUR RIGHT!
She reacted to the urgent tone and turned her head, Justin's lips barely missing her own and landing on her cheek instead. Hazel quickly pushed him away, in shock.
WHAT was that!?
New Year's tradition.
What kind of tradition is kissing a stranger!?
We better go.
She took one more step away from him.
"I... I must go."
She left the rooftop, calling her father. He didn't pick up, but texted her if everything was alright. She texted back saying she wanted to go home, and he said Mathis would be waiting for her at the entrance. True to his words, Mathis was there and drove her home, not asking anything.
***
She has harshly rubbing her face, erasing any trace of make up.
I'm sorry.
Why are you apologizing?
Because I didn't warn you about this tradition.
He was the one who should be apologizing for trying to kiss me. You warned me in time to avoid his lips. Thank you.
Still...
I mean it, Hannah. THANK YOU.
... You're welcome.
I can't wait to get home now.
Me too. I miss my quiet life. This... is not for me.
Me neither.
SUNDAY
Persefoneia hugged her one last time, with so much force she could almost feel her ribs cracking.
"It was lovely having you here, much better than your brother."
I'm not sure I should thank this kind of compliment.
"Passengers of flight..."
Hazel smiled and took a step back.
"I should go."
Her stepmother nodded.
"Yeah, you should. Don't worry! I'll send the rest of your clothes to your brother's house, so you can start setting your closet."
Great, I thought she had forgotten about it...
And how are we gonna explain that to Nico?
We should probably warn him.
Yeah, before a truck with girl's clothes suddenly park in front of his place.
A/N: I can't believe it. I FINISHED THIS DAMNED CHAPTER!!!! And it's not revised because I can't stand to look at it anymore. And I know nothing about LA, so what I wrote about I searched on google, so be nice and don't judge too much.
