I Was Staring

The smell of pancakes woke me up... and the constant nagging of Kailyn and Ian telling me to get up to eat, both jumping on and shaking me. I sat up, my back feeling sorer because of Ian. They dragged me out of bed, not even giving me time to grab my glasses.

I bumped into a few walls and railings, almost tripping down the stairs as the two dragged me out. I didn't have my glasses so I was blind.

My siblings sat me down as my... mom told Kailyn to get my glasses. With a heave, she finally left and grabbed them, handing them to me. I put them on to focus my eyes. Right then, a nice tower of pancakes was placed in front of me. It was topped with maple syrup, whipped cream, and mangoes.

I started to dig in as my sister glared me. A plate of pancakes was placed in front of her and my brother. Both had the same style as mine but with fewer pancakes and different fruit. In the middle of my eating, I stood up to get my decaf coffee.

"Nope. You finish eating your food before you get any decaf mister." I frowned and looked at her with a sad face. Mom wasn't amused.

"Where's dad?"

"Had to leave early for work."

I sat back down and finished my food before getting some coffee. I placed my dishes in the sink as I grabbed my coffee.

"You kids do know that the school year is starting." We all let out a collective groan. She rolled her eyes.

"I'm going to be enrolling you guys in the nearest schools near here." There was an angry silence between the kids in the room. My mom appeared beside me. "You know, Kaison, this is a chance for you to take your mind off some paper and meet new people. Stop going on your laptop all the time."

I looked away. I never really talked to people being the 'nerd' of the school. I usually kept to myself. I never had friends in middle school at all. I was just a loner kid. I was the loser of the kid. No one ever talked to me. The only place I felt as home was online or in art class.

"What about that one girl you met when you were younger? Is she still here? You two could hang out like you two used to." I stayed quiet. I hadn't heard from Viona since I left six years ago.

"She probably doesn't remember me," I mumble quietly. My mom sadly smiled as she began washing the dishes and I dried them. "You know, I always thought you two would start dating and become married." I almost dropped the plate I was holding. She began laughing.

"We were only friends!" I felt my face burn with embarrassment.

"You two were pretty close you know. She also was a pretty girl." That made me blush harder as my sister joined in on her laughing. I was completely flustered. But I knew I'd never bump into her. She probably moved away somewhere else or forgot about me.

We finished the dishes and I went up to my room closing it behind me. Sometimes I really hated my family. I opened the window to let the air in as I sat in my desk and pulled out a sheet of paper and my red pencil.

I sat there thinking. But the only thing that actually came to my mind was her. Viona and her striking red hair. I sighed. I looked over at the mess of a desk I had. On it was some drawings, sketches, and thumbnails.

"Brother!" I heard my sister call me. Right when I was settled... "what do you want?" I yelled back.

"We have to get groceries!" I sighed and stood up. Going down the stairs, I saw my sister waiting impatiently in the doorway. I slipped my shoes on and she got in the driver's seat.

"You do know that you're technically not supposed to-" She started the engine and looked at me in the eye. "Rules were meant to be broken. Now get your seatbelt on and we're outta here." My eyes met hers and I put my seatbelt on.

The drive to the nearest store was quiet. She parked and we got out. I climbed out after her. We both went to the store looking for the items that we needed when I was backtracked by some nice erasers for me to use. I looked around at the erasers seeing the brand ad finding out that they're all trash.

I kept looking around at the erasers seeing which would be the best to use when I hear some arguing. I sighed out of annoyance knowing whose voice that was. I grabbed her away from the old lady and paid for what we have.

She started to protest but I had already put everything in the back and stuffed her into the passenger seat.

BEEP BEEP BEEP! I saw the gas tank blink repeatedly so I drove the car into the gas station forcing my sister to stay inside. A few seconds pass as I waited for the gas tank to fill as I glanced down at the time on my phone. There were a few messages on my phone from _TheArtGhost295_. I glanced up at the gas pump and my eyes skimmed past someone.

I shook my head thinking that I was dreaming.

My eyes couldn't help but look back up. My eyes were met with a pair of icy blue ones. Hair so bright red that it mimicked fire. My whole body stopped as we stood there. Hazel meeting a cold lightning blue. She broke away and that's when I realized I was staring.

I finished up the process and joined my sister in the car, waiting to catch my breath. Kailyn looked at me with worry. I shouldered her worrying gaze and started the car and drove off. I looked in the rearview mirror to see her staring back at me. The same gaze I got when I left her those years back.

Still trying to make them longer. Bare with me.
