Chapter Five
Annabeth's POV
Everything happened so quickly I barely had time to react. The beginning of the campfire was unlike anything I've ever experienced before, and my excitement kept rising once the grey owl appeared above my head. The crowd from the Athena cabin erupted in cheers and the smile never left my face, that was until my best friend in the whole world was claimed. I assumed the rest of the campers made noise, I don't really remember what happened after I saw the trident above his head. My brain both shut down and the rest of the world was muted to me. All I could do was stare at my best friend who was claimed to be the offspring of my mothers worst enemy. I didn't speak a word the rest of the night. My siblings helped me grab my stuff from the Hermes cabin and settle into my new bunk, which is where I am now, contemplating how terrible my luck is.
It was late and everyone else in the room was asleep when I heard the faint tapping on the door. I knew exactly who it was because he was tapping out our secret code from when I first moved in with him and Sally. I slide out of bed as quietly as I can and open the door, meeting the bright sea green eyes that have been there for me since the day he started reciting the lines of Finding Nemo.
"Annabeth! Are you okay? Is anything wrong? Are you in pain? Am I bothering you? Did I do something? Did someone bother you? Are you okay?!" Percy stumbles out.
"Percy, I-" I pause, placing my hands on his shoulders, "I'm okay, I promise."
"Okay, because I got really worried when you zoned out for, like, a really long time and then you weren't really talking to me and I was like, did I do something or-" I cut him off by jumping down off the stairs that led into the cabin and crashing into him, wrapping my arms around him like he was the only thing that mattered. We stood like that for awhile, just hugging each other as we spent our first night far away from home.
"So, just to clarify, I didn't screw up this time?" he asks.
"No, you Seaweed Brain" I laugh.
"Good because I know just what will cheer you up."
"What-" I start as I'm dragged toward cabin three.
"Shhh- just go with it" he says as we race across the grassy area in the center of the cabins, trying our best not to trip- which for us is very hard. He pulls me inside once we reach the door and he quietly shuts it behind us. The inside is absolutely beautiful. The walls were a sea green color, with the farthest wall painted to show the ocean at sunset, the sky home to purples, reds and oranges. There were a few bunks on the wall adjacent to the door, with a large fish tank taking up the space on the wall across from them. In front of the sunset wall was a set of black spiral stairs that led to a small loft that took up the uppermost part of the cabin. Percy led me up these steps and I was greeted by a variety of different colored bean bags, that surprisingly looked okay, and a large TV hanging on the wall.
"How-" I begin as I stand amazed at the beautiful architecture of the place.
"When the Hermes kids, Travis and Connor I think, were helping me bring my stuff they told me the story of the time the Athena kids and the Aphrodite kids got into this huge war of sorts- no one died though so that's good- that lasted a full month before Chiron got sick of it and forced them to cooperate in a project, otherwise they would have to do dishes for the rest of the summer. So, he made them redesign this cabin, thinking it would never be used because of this whole pack thing between the Big Three, which I bet you already know about. But yeah, they did Zeus and Hera's cabins too."
"That explains why it actually looks decent in here. You can barely put together and outfit"
"Hey-" he begins, pausing to look down at his dark green pajama pants and neon striped t-shirt, "Okay, maybe you have a point"
"I always do" I smile cheekily.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, Wise Girl" he says as he walks over to a little pile of his stuff in the corner and grabs a movie, putting it into the DVD player, "I'll be right one of these days."
"Only in your dreams Seaweed Brain" I reply, grabbing all the beanbags and making them into a huge pile big enough for two, knowing the action by heart from the times we did the same with the couch cushions at home.
Percy gasps and places a hand on his chest, "You wound me."
"What else is new" I smile as we both sit down in the beanbag pile.
"I want to know why you're so sad." I can feel him looking at me as I watch the previews on the TV. I sigh before I respond.
"It's just... Our parents hate each other. And when I say hate, I mean like they would stab each other for fun. I was just worried that it would change something between us or that would effect our friendship and I just- I panicked. It's pretty stupid, I know, but I worried" I ramble, hoping to get the words out faster, now that I realize that I overthought everything.
"Nothing with you is every stupid. You make me feel like I eat, sleep, and breath stupid with how smart you are, Wise Girl. Also, no stupid parental rivalry would come between us because we rock and they suck" he finishes with a smile.
"Nice choice of words there" I snicker.
"Yeah, yeah. Shut up and watch the movie will you? I want to watch Finding Nemo after this"
I laugh as the opening sequence of my guilty pleasure movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, begins playing and we both sink down further into the mountain of beanbags surrounding us. My eyes finally slip shut when Patrick starts singing on the bleachers, feeling safe and content under my blanket next to my best friend who is currently drooling in his sleep.
***
Okay, so its been years since I worked on this story and my friend mentioned Wattpad to me the other day and I logged on and saw a few comments on this book and it made me so inspired to write a chapter because everyone was so nice and supportive and I wanted to say thank you so, here you go. Another chapter! :D
P.S. Sorry if there are any typos, I wrote this at like one in the morning and I'm exhausted but inspiration hit so what can you do? :)
