Chapter 3: When Teams Team Up
You readied yourself to head back out. It had been a few hours since you and Yang had gone in the Emerald Forest and now you were ready to head back and destroy the Hellgate you’d found. As you prepared to head out, you noticed, your teammates were right behind you.
“Something I can help you with?” You asked, raising an eyebrow.
“We’re coming.” Cole said simply, crossing his arms.
“I don’t need help.” You insisted, “I can do this alone.”
“I’m not gonna take Lien for doing nothing.” Cole added.
“Indeed.” Netta agreed, “I could use a little action here.”
“I just wanna kill something.” Grey grunted.
You let out a deep sigh, “Fine. Guess that just makes it easier. Anyway, we’ll have to be sneaky, since only Ozpin knows about our job.”
“Ugh, fine!” Grey groaned.
“Works for me.” Cole nodded.
“Delightful.” Netta smirked.
You and your team managed to sneak out of the school fairly easy. You snuck out into the Emerald Forest and you led the way to the Hellgate you came across earlier. Only now, it had a large dark red opening portal in the gate.
“That’s not good…” Netta began, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose, “So, a few demons are coming out now…”
“Let’s see what they can do.” Cole smirked, pulling out his weapon. He loaded a dust crystal into it and that made electricity spark between and around the prongs of the weapon. Grey pulled out his sickles, gripping their chains and twirling them. Netta readied her guns as you rested your sword on your shoulder.
“It’ll be a battle just to get to the Hellgate.” You began, grinning, “Good. I never liked it when things are too easy.”
A horde of demons ran out of the portal.
“Ladies first, love~” Netta smirked, running forward. She kicked one demon, lodging her heel into its mouth. “Later~” She winked as a blast shot out of her heel, going through the demon’s head and killing it.
“Let’s take care of this!” Cole grinned as he ran at a demon. He hit it twice, which electrocuted the demon, then ran up, jumped off its chest, twirled around, and hit it across the face so hard, its head popped off. Grey threw his sickles. One went into a demon’s chest, and the other went into another demon’s head. He grunted as he swung them around, then slammed the demons into each other in a bloody burst of gore. You lunged forward and slashed a demon, then twirled your sword over your head, slashing it a couple more times, then stabbed it several times, and knocked it up into the air.
“Batter up!” You grinned as you held your sword like a baseball bat and swung at the airborne demon, making it explode into a bloody mess, except its head, which went flying far out into the distance. You put your hand over your eyes, watching the head fly. “Home run!” You exclaimed as another demon came up behind you. You then pulled out one of your guns, spun around, put your gun to the demon’s forehead, and put a hole through its face. After a minute or two, all the demons were dead.
“Too easy.” Grey groaned, unamused. You then looked back at the portal to see something coming out.
“Not done yet.” You stated, twirling your sword.
A large demon came out of the portal. The thing looked like an enormous spider with a human… ish torso. It had a dozen red eyes, horns on its head, and its mouth was divided into four sections.
“Ech!” Netta exclaimed in disgust.
“That is one ugly devil…” Cole groaned.
“Finally, I can rid the world of its own existence!” The devil laughed to itself. Then it noticed you and your team, “What’s this…? Humans to attempt to stop me… no…” The devil then reached its long twig-like arm and pointed a bony finger at you, “I can sense that you carry the blood of Sparda... the traitorous coward! I will drink your blood for the glory of Mundus!” It ran at you and aimed a swipe. Suddenly, you were chilling on its back, looking bored.
“Whew!” You grinned, “This thing smells even worse than it looks!” You then jumped off, doing a flip as you stuck the landing. You twirled your sword as you and your team prepared to fight.
“DIE HUMANS!!!” The Devil shouted, charging at you.
“Grey.” You nodded your head at your bloodthirsty partner. Grey nodded, twirling his sickles. He threw them, each one hooking into one of the devil’s back legs. Grey then pulled his chains under the legs, tripping the demon. “Cole.” You then looked at Cole. He grinned, then ran up. He hit the demon three times with his weapon, electrocuting it. He then did a flip, bashing his weapon on the devil’s head. “Netta.” You ordered, looking over at her. She winked, then ran up. She shot the demon in the chest, then jumped up and stomped on its head repeatedly, a shot firing from the guns on her heels with each stomp. It hacked up blood, then you ran at the demon. With a swift swipe of your sword, you split it in half.
“What a pathetic devil.” Grey groaned, disappointed as the devil’s body turned to light, becoming a devil arm. The Devil arm flew to you, coating your arms and legs. When the light faded, it revealed a set of gauntlets that coated your arms and legs. It was almost identical to the Gilgamesh gauntlets your dad, Dante, once used. You looked at your armored hand, wiggling your fingers. Suddenly, three Ursas charged at you. You were quick, and hit one of the Grimm with a jumping uppercut, which made its head pop off like a morbid rock 'em sock 'em robot. You then turned and hit another Ursa with a barrage of kicks, which left several holes in its body. You turned to the third beast that was charging at you. You drew back your fist and hit it with a straight punch that sent the monster flying through the Hellgate, causing the massive stone structure to crumble and collapse.
“Too easy!” You grinned.
“We should probably head back now.” Netta suggested.
“Yeah.” Cole agreed. You nodded as well. This part of the job was done so there was no need to stay.
You snuck back into school, returning the weapons to the lockers and sneaking back into your dorm, where you all got into your hammocks and fell asleep. But as you slept, you were haunted by unwelcome dreams…
“Keep that freak away from me!”
“I can’t believe you’d let something like THAT in school!”
“If it comes here, I’m transferring!”
“Stay away from me, you freak!”
Such hateful yells and insults tormented you throughout the night.

The next morning, you and your team started going throughout your classes. You hated the ridiculous uniform, you didn’t really pay attention, and you avoided other students. You kinda liked Miss Goodwitch’s class because it involved fighting, a topic you excelled at. She called for volunteers and immediately, you volunteered. Your opponent was some guy called Juane Arc. He looked nice enough, so you decided to go easy on him as you two drew your swords. Your blades clashed a few times. He swung at you and you parried his strikes. You swung and he managed to block with his shield. He swiped again, and again you parried, landing several slashes, then kicking him back. It went on like this for a moment, then Glynda stopped you and Juane from attacking each other.
“Juane’s aura has hit its red zone,” She began, “The winner is (Y/N).”
You smiled, twirling your sword and sheathing it on your back. You offered Juane a handshake, which he took.
“Alright,” Glynda continued, “Up next is…” She stopped as Professor Ozpin suddenly entered. “Professor Ozpin…?” Glynda inquired.
“Sorry for interrupting class.” Ozpin began, “But there’s an announcement that needs to be passed around.”
“Announcement?” Glynda echoed.
“Yes.” Ozpin pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, “The population of Grimm has reached a very dangerous level. As such, for the time being, all teams will be paired up with another team, temporarily creating eight-man teams.”
You gave him a slight glare. You knew it wasn’t really because of Grimm. It must’ve been a precaution in case anyone found themselves fighting Devils. Actually, that sounded like a good idea for just in case.
“Now,” Ozpin continued, “All team leaders will receive the identity of their partner team after school. That is all, and before I leave,” He then glanced slightly at you, “Keep up the good work.” He then left. There were a few murmurs in the crowd of students now, about what team would be paired up with who. You didn’t like this change of plans. If this meant you had to drag a whole other team with you, it’d just be harder to keep your secret. You began to wonder if this was really worth the money.
As class ended and everyone was dismissed, you and your team walked around a bit on your way to the next class. You stopped when you noticed a sight that sickened you to your core. Some prick was messing with a rabbit faunus girl. The girl was starting to cry as the bully wouldn’t leave her alone.
“Hey!” You shouted at the bully, “Leave her alone!”
“What’re you gonna do about it, new guy?!” The bully questioned. You moved incredibly fast, aiming a kick. Your foot stopped just before it could impact against the bully’s face. Still, he fell back, surprised from your lightning-fast movements. He got up, giving you a threatening glare, but left. You looked back at the still shaking faunus girl.
“Are you okay?” You asked.
“Y-yes…” She managed, “Thank you…”
“Velvet!” A new voice called as team RWBY suddenly joined the area. “We saw what happened, are you okay?!” Ruby asked.
“Yes, I’m alright…” The girl named Velvet nodded, then looked to you, “Thank you again.... Um…”
“(Y/N).” You gave her your name, “Don’t mention it.”
“(Y/N)...?” Velvet began, “Why did you help me when you didn’t even know me?”
“I hate the way some people treat faunus…” You sighed, “Picking on someone just because they’re a bit different… it sickens me that some people are that cowardly… also, I used to have to deal with bullies when I was young, which is why I can’t just sit back and watch someone get bullied.”
“That’s actually pretty cool.” Yang said with a smile.
“Are you sure you’re okay, Velvet?” Ruby asked.
“Yes…” Velvet nodded, “Maybe we should head to our next class.”
“Yeah.” You agreed, “But before we go…” You then handed Velvet the number to your Scroll, “If that guy gives you any more trouble, let me know. Next time, I won’t stop my kick.”
The rest of the day had little to no real things worth talking about. From the energetic Dr. Oobleck to the mustachioed Professor Port, the classes had little that interested you. At the end of the day, you and your team lay in your hammocks. It was then that you remembered, “Oh yeah. We should’ve received our partner team by now.” You pulled out your scroll and looked at the latest messages. You were a little surprised to see that your team was paired with Team RWBY. But you were also a little relieved, since you knew they were okay and you didn’t know any other teams.
It wasn’t long after that that the color-coordinated girls paid you and your team a visit.
“So, we’re working together, huh?” Ruby said, “I honestly thought we’d end up with team JNPR.”
“Still, these guys are cool.” Yang shrugged.
“Back at you guys.” you agreed.
“Just don't get in the way.” Grey scoffed, arms crossed. You sighed at Grey’s less than friendly attitude.
Your team and team RWBY spent a bit under an hour or so getting to know each other, talking and such. You actually felt like they would make for good friends. And something about Yang… you didn't really know what it was, you just wanted to hang out with her more. You shook your head. You weren't here to make friends, you were on a mission. Besides, they probably wouldn't be so friendly if they found out just what you were…
Sometime later, you decided to head back into the Emerald Forest to see if you could find more Hellgates. You'd already made peace with the fact your team was coming whether you liked it or not. However, you were a bit caught off guard to find team RWBY join you out of nowhere.
“What're you doing?” You asked.
“We could ask you the same thing.” Ruby replied.
“We're just gonna take a walk in the Emerald Forest.” You answered, “Maybe fight some monsters.”
“Then we'll join you.” Ruby smiled, “Our teams are supposed to stick together now after all.”
“Oh we're fine.” you said, “You don't have to trouble yourselves.”
“No trouble at all.” Yang smiled cutely, “Sounds like fun.”
Admittedly, you liked the idea of hanging out with the girls some more, but you knew taking them looking for Hellgates would get… complicated, to say the least, so you insisted they stay behind. Despite your arguments, they just ignored you and kept walking with you. Eventually you gave up and let them tag along. Hopefully, nothing too eventful would happen tonight...
