The Calm Before the Storm

†††

Jimin

Life changed after the previous night.

Jimin knew it would, but not by the amount it had. Yes, he was disappointed Y/n didn't follow through and kill the man, but at least she cracked more than ever before.

The clock ticked, and Jimin had three days until he had to give up his powers. With Y/n teetering on the edge, that meant he only had to do one or two more schemes to get her to cave. What would those two schemes be? Taehyung could help again; after all, Taehyung would do anything as long as the price was right.

Jimin brushed the thoughts away, though. He had a different situation to deal with at the moment: comforting Y/n.

The girl clung to him in her bed. It felt more like their bed, but Jimin never pointed that out. Not like he'd ever get a chance to, with her like that. It was his fault. He regretted it, but he didn't at the same time. It was an odd feeling, really. Never once had he felt remorse on that scale.

The plan was to have the man rough her up and scare her, and then Jimin would come in, knock him unconscious, and get Y/n to kill an unarmed, unconscious man. AKA: Murder. And, no, the man had no idea that was the plan. Jimin had informed him of an easy target who would be alone in her home, and Jimin made sure to cloak himself and unlock the doors while Y/n was distracted by her movie binging so the man could enter.

Jameson was the guy's name, and Jimin had met him a decade ago, back when Jimin jumped between different places. Benefits of being an incubus: Jimin knew everyone. Bar-hopping made for a wonderful social experience. Though Jimin had to be careful and avoid some people he had met long ago so they didn't catch on to his immortality, seeing as he didn't age while they did. Jameson was a moron, though, so he had marked Jimin's lack of age down to him being Korean. Which, to be fair, was also true. If he were mortal, anyway.

Jameson was insane and offered Jimin drugs to make a girl pass out. On the house, Jameson had said. To honor their first time doing "business" together. Jimin knew he was a fucked up demon, but that was much even for him, and it was safe to say he declined and bought Jameson enough alcohol to make him forget about women altogether.

"Hey," Jimin whispered, kissing the top of Y/n's head. "I'm gonna go to McDonald's real fast, okay? Want some hash browns?"

Y/n responded by squeezing his arm. Her voice was tiny. Meek. Fragile. "Don't go."

It was a whisper. No more, no less. Her hot breath touched his neck as she snuggled further into him with her hands trembling and clawing at his chest. He pressed another kiss to her head as if that'd solve anything.

"I know, honey, I know, but you need to eat, and I need to eat, too. It'll take a minute at most. I can teleport, remember?" Not for much longer if Jimin didn't do something about his Y/n problem. "I can even pick up a treat for Harry while I'm out. How does that sound?"

Y/n didn't answer. She buried her head into his neck and engulfed him in an overwhelming heat. The summer hotness Hershey possessed was like a winter breeze when compared to Y/n's body. Sweat rested on her neck and forehead from the lack of AC (she hadn't turned it on), and she made sure to rub all of her fluids over him. He hid his grimace and instead cleared his throat.

"Y/n, darling, please. I'm hungry, and I think you're hungry, too. And what about Harry? He needs some loving, don't you think?" Although he didn't want to pull the trap card, he knew he had to with the words, "What about Jessy? She'll worry if you don't check in. Why don't you give her a call while I'm gone, hm? What do you say? Then you won't be alone."

Y/n picked her head up with bags under her eyes and her hair sprawled up in ten thousand different directions. It took a few seconds, but she eventually nodded and backed off. Jimin wanted to sprint out of bed, but he instead smiled, kissed her sweaty forehead, and slid off the mattress to retreat to the kitchen.

Harry was in his cage, as expected since Jimin hadn't stolen him again. The furry bitch squeaked at Jimin, and he took it as a sign to pet the bastard before giving him a carrot and some more water. Y/n didn't budge from the bedroom, and Jimin glanced back and observed the way she sank into the covers and closed her eyes. He could smell her sweat from his position thanks to his enhanced senses.

"Crazy times we live in, huh bud?" Jimin whispered to the guinea pig, who didn't reply. Not even a squeak. Jimin yawned and didn't say anything else, instead turning himself invisible and snapping his fingers to tear through the space-time continuum and plop himself in front of the McDonald's he adored.

That time, while teleporting, he didn't see the woman or any flashbacks of his past. Ever since meeting Y/n, the flashes had dialed down in favor of living in the moment. Perhaps that was for the best. He didn't need to see his memories of his mother, grandmother, grandfather, father, or whoever else. That was centuries ago. Hell, maybe even over a thousand years ago. He didn't remember nor care.

Jimin did his business at a rapid pace, buying hash browns, stopping at one of the many pet stores (not the one he had given Harry to) to buy Harry a treat, and returning to Y/n only to find her in the same position: curled in a ball and unmoving.

Seeing her with baggy eyes and equally baggy clothing had him slowing his movements as he set the McDonald's bag down on the kitchen table. Y/n didn't budge even though Jimin knew she heard him jostling the bag.

"Honey, I got a bunch of hash browns. Come out and eat one with me." He kept his voice gentle, but it didn't change that she wouldn't move. She didn't so much as grunt. "Honey, please. Just for five minutes?"

Oh good lord. If Jimin had to babysit her, he'd lose his mind. So far, it seemed that was the way his life was heading. Well, that was his fault, wasn't it? He only had himself to blame.

Jimin entered the room and pulled the covers off of her to expose her unicorn pajamas and messy hair. He scooped her up and carried her to the kitchen instead. Much to his amazement, she didn't protest or whine or show any verbal or physical signs of caring about his actions, so he set her down on the closest chair in front of the kitchen table and plated up her share of hash browns. He had gotten her five, figuring she didn't want many. Then again, he didn't know the normal amount for a human to consume. Jimin ate a good twenty in one sitting most days. Humans didn't. Weird.

"I bought a bunch, but please eat at least one. If not for yourself, then for me." Jimin sighed and brushed her hair out of her eyes. "Or maybe just half of one. Is that a good compromise?"

Y/n poked at the potato goodness with her finger. "You bought them? Not stole them?"

"Well duh. They had to make them, Y/n. I couldn't just man the fryers by myself." Jimin chuckled but stopped when she didn't join in. He sat next to her and watched as she poked at her food instead of eat it. That time, he didn't comment. He was already fed up with the babysitter gig.

"Why do you think he did it?" she asked, her voice going tinier than before, and Jimin stiffened at that.

He coughed. "There are evil people in the world, Y/n. I don't think he had a reason. I know that's not what you want to hear, but..."

"It's the truth." Y/n bit the hash brown and chewed it. Slowly. It took a full minute for her to swallow the small bite. "And... do you think he'll see jail time?"

"You had bruises as evidence and me as a witness. I'm sure someone will do something."

After the attack, Jimin had called the police under the June alias, and he told the cops the "truth." The truth Y/n knew, anyway. Jimin had gone out for a bit and returned in time to see the attack and stop it. Luckily, Jameson never saw Jimin's face the previous night and had no clue he had saved Y/n. If Jameson knew, Jimin had a feeling he'd get ratted out real fast. Well, maybe. Jameson was a lowlife, but there was a chance he wouldn't say shit even if he knew. To honor Jimin's "friendship" with Jameson. If that was what they were calling it, that was.

"You really believe that, or are you just saying it to make me feel better?" she asked, and Jimin took another hash brown and directed it toward her lips.

"I want to believe it. Does that count?"

She shrugged and opened her mouth to take in the hash brown. It took her as long as it did the first time to chew and swallow. When she finished, she didn't speak again. That left silence and Harry's squeaks between them, and Jimin fiddled with his fingers. Any appetite he had zoomed away in favor of his stomach feeling like it had shrunk and gotten beaten over and over again. Like the days he had been tortured in Hell.

"Did you call Jessy?" he asked to distract himself, and she shook her head.

"Texted. Told her we were busy getting new furniture today and couldn't talk much."

"That works too." Jimin paused and let the savory potato scent fill his nostrils before adding whatever else he could. "Anything else you wanna talk about?"

"No," she replied without hesitation. She ate another hash brown, though Jimin couldn't tell if she was doing it out of hunger or to give her an excuse not to speak again. He took the hint either way and shut the fuck up.

What was his next step? Y/n was on the verge of losing her mind, if she hadn't already. So where did that leave Jimin? What could he do that he hadn't done? Jameson was a giant leap that he thought for sure would result in her killing an unarmed man in her wrath. Wrath being a sin she would go to Hell for. Bam, no more soulmate for Jimin. But that plan went down the toilet.

Jimin had to start over, and he had three days to figure it out.

Jimin gazed at her and saw the grease on her lips. He leaned over and wiped it off with his thumb, and Harry's squeaks grew louder as Jimin did so. Y/n didn't move while he cleaned her, and he topped it off with a peck to the cheek, unsure what else to do.

"Can we go back to bed now?" Y/n asked, her eyes on the table.

That little request had him freezing and wishing to kiss all over her face and reassure her that she was safe with him. But that was far from the truth, so instead of saying that, he nodded and put away the hash browns. He didn't bother eating any despite how he had been starving earlier. His stomach didn't make so much as a peep while he threw away the empty bag and stored his pound of hash browns in the fridge.

After he was done, he brought Y/n back to her room and tucked her in against his chest with the covers draped over them. The warmth wasn't sweltering that time. If anything, it resembled a picnic in front of a sunrise: beautiful, calm, and romantic. He doubted Y/n saw their closeness the same way, so he simply stroked her hair and whisper sweet nothings to her.

No one had ever held Jimin like that. No one dared to, and Jimin didn't know if that was due to his less-than-ideal attitude or because he hadn't had a family in too long to remember. Either way, he shut his eyes and allowed his breathing to slow with his heartrate, and he cuddled with Y/n, ignoring the distant squeaks from Harry since that pig never shut up.

"Goodnight," Y/n mumbled against his chest, and he perked up at the delicate sound. His grip tightened on her, and he let out a sharp breath before humming and rubbing his cheek against the top of her head. There were a million thoughts he had about how to sabotage his relationship with her and earn his immortality back, but in that moment, all he could do was sigh. Maybe even smile. Just a little.

"Goodnight, Y/n."

This story is almost complete with only nine chapters left. Thank you for joining me on this journey so far, and I hope you enjoy the last nine chapters.

If you would like to read the new chapters early, I launched a Patreon where all tiers will receive early access to new chapters a few days or even up to a week prior to the Wattpad release date. This chapter was available for Patreon members on Friday the 15th, though in the future it will be earlier.

Along with that, my new book, Arrogance, a JJK x reader fanfic, will be released on November 24th, though the first three chapters are already available on Patreon for the two highest tiers to see, so if you would like early access to Arrogance, it is up on Patreon. All of my new books from here on out will receive an early release on Patreon, and all new chapters will receive early releases on Patreon for all tiers to see.

If you would like to sign up for my Patreon, the link is in the external link. There is also a free membership that will receive general updates, occasional early access to new chapters (like one or two days early access), and other perks, so this isn't a paid-only thing and you can sign up either way with no cost required. The only payments are for the four tiers, but there are free memberships as well!

Thank you if you read all this. With me graduating college soon, I'm going to have to make some changes to my Wattpad and how I run things as a writer, and I appreciate everyone's understanding as I make this creative shift. This Patreon will allow me to keep posting on Wattpad as often as I do and work less hours so I can focus more on my writing, so I appreciate everyone for signing up, free or paid!

Thanks guys!
