Chapter 3: Messenger
"I can see you!" Shadow yelled to her sister. Dawn's hindquarters stuck out from the rock she was hiding behind.
"No you can't! If i can't see you, you can't see me!" Dawn replied.
"That's not how life works!" Shadow retorted. She crouched down on the bare, cold stone of the cave floor, and tip toed on careful paws towards the rock. Dawn didn't move a muscle. Shadow crept up to her sister, and quietly opened her muzzle widely, and....SNAP! Shadow bit down on Dan's tail and the golden pup let out a yelp of pain. She started running around at full speed, dragging Shadow behind. Dawn could hear muffled ows coming from Shadow, but still she held on. It wasn't until Meadow ripped Shadow off of Dawn that they stopped.
"Foolish pups! Shut it! The messenger is back!" Shadow and Dawn looked up to the entrance of the cave. Wolves started gathering around a figure outlining the white snow. The siblings ducked and swerved between wolves' legs to get to the front. Alpha was speaking to a brown, bony wolf. He looked all bone and no flesh. He also had a leather satchel around his back that looked like it was made from deer skin.
"Timber, what news have you brought us from the other packs?" Alpha asked.
"The other packs of the Horizon say they're doing well, as always not saying much. But still nothing from the Great packs, sir. They sent me away at once again." Timber panted and bowed before his leader.
"They don't deserve to have that title anymore." Alpha muttered.
"Yes, they still act all-mighty." Timber replied. He trudged over to what was left of a venison from the night before and ate hungrily. Meadow had told Shadow and Dawn about messengers from each pack that travel for news. But it's a job few wolves dare to take, for it is very easy to die along the long journey to the Great packs.
"Why do we even send our messengers to the Great packs?" Dawn asked.
"The Wolves of the Horizon still follow ancient traditions, unlike the Great packs who have broken away from them." Meadow answered.
"But whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?" Shadow moaned. "It's stupid to send wolves on a suicide trip."
"We still believe in them for very good reasons." Meadow growled. Shadow remembered the story of how the Wolves of the Horizon came to be. There was a war that teared what had once been one big group of wolves apart, and her ancestors traveled hear. Though Meadow said nothing more.
Dawn started walking over to the venison and Shadow followed. Timber was nice, even though he was low ranking in the pack. Usually those wolves are always in a bad mood.
"What did you see?" Dawn asked.
"Well there are towering trees in ginormous forests, glittering lakes, grassy meadows. Much more lush in the south. I much like it here though." Timber answered.
"Nonononononono. What Dawn meant was what do you see...at night?" Shadow asked.
Dawn gasped. "You shouldn't ask things like that! Remember all the stories Meadow told us?"
"Well whats the point of stories when we can get our info from someone who experiences it?" Shadow said.
Timber started stuttering. "At night? Well, i'm assuming you mean the beautiful stars, or the moonlight shining on the snow, or-"
"See? He knows what we're talking about! Tell us! What really goes on out there?" Shadow prompted.
"Well..um...there is a feeling that comes along that you're...being watched." Timber started. "No! There is nothing! You should stop listening to the crazy ghost stories your mother tells you so you shouldn't run away or do something disastrous!" Timber stood up and stomped away.
