Chapter Two

The next day I woke up and immediately sensed that something was wrong. As my vision cleared, I realized that I was in a small jail cell. There was no window in sight, and the room was cold and drafty. I could taste blood in my mouth, and there were bruises on my arms. I could hear footsteps echoing through the stone walls, and keys clanging against each other.

Finally, a figure appeared. I rubbed my tired eyes and I could see that it was a man in a suit approaching the bars of the cell door. He unlocked the door and smiled a cold grin.

“Welcome. You must be Ashley.”

I attempted to stand up and face him but immediately fell. My ankle was chained to the wall.

“Sorry for the current accommodations, but we couldn’t take a chance with you running.”

I pulled myself up and stood carefully.

“Where am I?” I asked. “Why am I here? Why am I hurt?!”

“All in good time.” He replied calmly. “For now, can you tell us anything about the files you found?”

It was then I remembered the day before.

“You-You’re one of those people! The ones Hannah warned me about!”

“Ah yes, I suppose she would warn you. How is she?”

“How do you-”

“We see everything, Ashley. Now, the files.”

I searched my memory for anything, then reconsidered.

“Why would I ever tell you?!”

“Because,” He leaned in close and whispered, “You do not have the power to refuse.”

He leaned back again and smiled.

“At least explain where I am.” I said, beginning to feel frightened.

“We put you under drugs last night,” He began, “We came to your house and took you, and you fought a good fight, that’s where the bruises are from. We took you here, to the station. Can’t tell you where of course. And as for why you’re here,” He looked me dead in the eyes. “We believe you may have information we need.”
