Kaity's pov
"Kaity! " A sudden bust of loud noise came crashing in from the living room entrance. I hoped up from the sofa to see my little brother Michael rushing towards me with a big green live frog in his hands.
"What the hell" I yelled jumping to my feet and rushing towards him. I was completely afraid of frogs and my brother always found it fun to mess around with them.
"Mom, Michael has another frog in the house" I yelled towards the kitchen where my mom was baking cookies for my school's debating team, which naturally I was the president of.
He stop when he heard my mom's cold tone from the kitchen and ran back out into the yard where he had came from. I sigh in relieve before returning to the sofa and lying back down.
It was the day before my highschool prom and I had to look the best despite loosing my best friend Lyla two months ago.
It was a tragedy when they her lifeless corpse floating in the lake behind her house. I was told that she had several broken bones and fractured ribs, they claimed that she was murdered and thrown into the lake wearing nothing but a white nightgown stained red with her crimson blood.
I still can't get over the fact that she won't be there when I win prom queen even though we both promised each other that we would both live to see that day.
"Are you ready to go get your dress from the dry cleaners honey?" My mom said suddenly breaking me away from my awful memories.
I looked at her with a small smile before sitting up. " Sure let me just grab my shoe then I'll be ready," I spoke before running upstairs to my bedroom.
Guilt washed over me for a moment as I was feeling uncomfortable with the fact that I wanted to win something that should have been both me and Lyla's dream, but in the end I truly wanted to win it for us both.
I then grabbed my yellow Nike shoe from my closet and ran down the stairs where I saw my mom and Michael both waiting on me.
We excited the house while closing the door behind us and walked to the car, mom waited until we were all seated inside before reversing out of the driveway and driving away.
The dry cleaners weren't a far drive away, it was approximately 4 km ahead of us but both mom and Michael wanted to be there when I collected my dress because my dad who's a police officer is always busy with patrols and has little to no time for me or the rest of the family. I'm surprised that my mom is still married to a man that doesn't even remember their anniversary nor her birthday, it's really not worth the time if you ask me.
After driving for awhile we finally made it into town where I collected my dress and went back home, my mood was off and that was odd. I kept feeling as if something bad was about to happen something no one had any control over, something I knew I would live to regret but, despite that awful feeling that my guts were giving me, I decided to ignore it and make the best of the day. The day before I would be crowned prom Queen the day that will mark the end of everything I worked so hard for I only wish that I was more prepared for what was to come.
