6. Present Time

So this is kinda weird, where it's both the day after the last present time chapter and the day after Thor's 1980 day. Present time for them is 2018. I love this chapter so much. I get to write my dreams coming true. It's long, but it's worth it. And. So. Much. Fluff. So, without further ado...Enjoy! :)

Thor wakes up to the sun in his eyes. He blinks his eyes wearily, but closes them again, not wanting to fully commit yet to waking up.

He feels warmth of a body next to him.

That gets his eyes to open. He sits up fast and breathes hard while getting reoriented and that's when he sees his boyfriend--his beautiful, smart, modest, beloved Bruce, next to him, still asleep.

Thor smiles, and feels so much affection. His sudden movement wakes up Bruce, but Thor is too relieved that he is home to really think on it.

"Thor? What's going on?" Bruce asks sleepily, a little concerned about Thor's quick motion which woke him up.

"Was it lasts night when you were reading a book here way after dark, and I came in from outside?" Thor asks, hoping that the answer is yes, hoping he didn't miss a day in the present, and that he didn't have to explain anything.

"Um, yes?" Bruce answers, not entirely sure how to treat the question. "Why, did something happen?"

"No." Thor settles back down and turns to face Bruce. He smiles. "These days have just been so perfect, and some more or less alike, and I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't forgetting a day or anything."

Bruce smiles with him. "Well, that was last night, so you're good."

Maybe it was just a dream. A really, really vivid dream.

Thor keeps on smiling.

"What?" Bruce asks him.

"What what?"

"You're staring and smiling."

"No I'm not."

"Yes you are."

"No."

"Yes."

"Okay," Thor gives him. He kisses Bruce on the lips gently. "Want to know why?"

"Try me."

"It's just that I love you and adore you and think you are the most wonderful person on the planet--any planet, for that matter."

Bruce averts his eyes and grins, blushing. "You say the sweetest things. A lot."

"It's because they're true."

"Well, I don't state everything I know about gamma rays again and again, just because it's true," Bruce returns affectionately.

"Well, you know those," Thor responds, "but I need to repeat these things, because although they are true, you need some convincing that they're true."

"'Kay, I'll give you that," Bruce says, and they linger in a moment of blissful silence.

Thor missed Bruce, even though he only saw him yesterday--whichever version of yesterday he may be talking about. Yes, he enjoyed spending time with a younger Bruce, learning about the man who let no one in first hand, learning what he never could if he had asked (If, in fact, it actually happened.). But he also needed his Bruce, the one who struggles with the Hulk, who went to Sakaar, who is an Avenger, who Thor has fallen deeply in love with.

There has got to be a way that I can show him I love him, Thor thinks. Then, he has an idea. Actually, there might be a way. He knows what he has to do.

"Excuse me for a moment, my love," Thor says, "I am hungry. Let me get something small to eat, then I shall be back here again."

"You better," Bruce says as Thor gets out of bed. Bruce looks at his clock. "It's not even near 7:00 am yet. The heater doesn't turn on for another half hour."

Thor quickly gets dressed and walks outside their room. as he makes his way to the kitchen, he sees Tony--regular Tony, as Thor relied on him to be here, making coffee.

"Good morning," Thor greets him.

Tony turns around a little. "Morning, Thor."

Thor walks to his side, only partially thinking about getting food. Yes, he is hungry, but he has more in mind.

"You here for morning coffee?" Thor acknowledges.

"You know it," Tony replies. "Steve says this stuff isn't good for me. I think otherwise."

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion," Thor responds.

"Thank good ness for that," Tony agrees. He smirks. "Speaking of opinions, I believe it's time to go on another Star Wars marathon."

Thor laughs a little. "According to you, it's always time to watch every Star Wars movie."

"Well, they are good movies," Tony defends himself.

"No argument to that."

Tony grins a little, on some memory he has. "You know, on my tenth birthday, I skipped school to go see The Empire Strikes Back. Mom and Dad were gone, and Jarvis thought it wouldn't hurt."

"J.A.R.V.I.S.?" Thor inquires, thinking of the A.I.

"My dad's butler Jarvis," Tony clarifies. "Edwin Jarvis." He smiles affectionately at the thought. "Jarvis always knew what I liked. He was a good man."

So Jarvis was the man young Tony was with, Thor puts together. It seems there's more evidence there that yesterday did happen. But how? He still has no answer.

The two drift off into a moment of silence, each busy with their own intent within the kitchen.

"So," Tony changes the subject, "how are you and Bruce?" He wiggles his eyebrows.

Thor grins. "We're great, thank you."

"You know, it really was a surprise when you and Bruce came on a space ship back to Earth, what, half a year ago," Tony says as he pours himself a cup of fresh coffee and grabs a spoon to stir. "I wasn't expecting to see Bruce, or you, let alone you two together. Did you guys know how obvious you two were that you had feelings for each other? You couldn't take your eyes off each other--still can't."

Thor laughs a little. "Yes, I do remember everyone being surprised, but here we are now, and everything is fine."

"And that's how it should stay," Tony says, and points his spoon at Thor. "Remember, that's my science bro whose heart you have. Don't take it lightly."

"Trust me, hurting Bruce is the last thing I ever want to do," Thor confirms.

"Same here."

Thor clears his throat. "Actually, speaking of Bruce, I was wondering if you could help me with something..." Tony listens intently as Thor tells him his plan, and how he needs his help.

"Of course!" Tony exclaims.

"Thank you, Stark."

"Definitely. When do you want to go?"

"I promised Bruce I would be back in bed after I ate breakfast, so maybe closer to noon?"

"Sounds good. You know where to find me. If you can't find me, F.R.I.D.A.Y. will tell you."

"Alright. Until then."

Tony leaves with his coffee, Thor leaves a few moment after to get back to Bruce.

True, he is hungry, but he can't eat now from the excitement he has now. He hopes that Bruce will like, or love, maybe, what he has in mind.

Tony and Thor went out at about a quarter after eleven, and came back by 1:20 pm. Now Thor just needs to plan more. Tony is more than willing to help.

At 5:00 pm, Thor finds Bruce in his lab and asks him, "If I told you I wanted to take you somewhere in half an hour, will you say yes?"

Bruce puts down his current work. He looks Thor in the eye. "Where? For what?"

"It's a surprise."

"How formal will this be?"

"Does it matter?"

Bruce sighs, knowing he probably won't get more information, and will just have to wait and see. "Sure. Half an hour you said?"

"Yep."

"Okay. I'll be ready by then."

"Great," Thor smiles, and heads out, glad that that went well.

"So where are we going?" Bruce asks, wearing something somewhere in the middle of formal and informal.

"Like I said, it's a surprise," Thor tells him mysteriously, wearing something more on the formal side himself, though not so formal that Bruce may become suspicious.

Thor takes him around the city, or more of, Bruce shows him, he knowing it better. By six, Thor leads Bruce to a restaurant, where they eat a hearty dinner, paid for by Tony's credit card. Afterwards, they are on the street again.

They head back to the Avengers Compound.

(Here, we will pretend that the Compound is kind of like the Avengers Tower, because when I wrote this next bit I did in fact envision it being in the Tower and just don't know how to convert it to the Compound (and guess what? I'm the Author. IT'S MY STORY. I CAN WRITE IT HOW I WANT (This is my version of Pirates of the Caribbeans' disregard for physics)).)

They go up to the top floor, and hang out a safe distance away from the full edge, watching the sunset.

(Just like where the first Avengers movie where it is in fact the tower and there's that fight and where Natasha had to put Loki's scepter through the energy shield thing, and I'm pretty sure somewhere up there is a railing somewhere, so yeah, and yeah, I warped the Compound and Tower together, but still just go with it please)

"It's beautiful," Bruce says, talking about the sunset.

"It is," Thor agrees, "like you."

Bruce looks at him. "You know you don't always have to say that."

"Well, I want to."

"Okay." Bruce looks away, then looks back at Thor. "Hey, don't think I don't appreciate it. I really do. It's just...you know I have trust issues, and--"

Thor puts his hand on Bruce's. "You are perfect just the way you are."

A grin creeps up Bruce's face. "Really?"

"Really."

They fall into a comfortable silence.

Thor looks away into the sunset. When he looks back at Bruce, he sees a pendant in his hands that Thor gave him nearly forty years ago--or yesterday. Time works strange sometimes.

"Where did you get that?" Thor asks, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.

So I really did go back in time.

So it wasn't a dream after all.

He's surprised that Bruce still has that. Even if indeed did time travel, Bruce has had that for...oh, around 38 years.

"I got it a while ago," Bruce tells him, "I forget what it's called, but it means World Tree, or something like that. I got it from this one person I met, oh, I don't know, nearly 40 years ago. Nearly forty years ago I was ten, and now I'm almost 50, gosh I'm old--"

"I'm fifteen hundred years old," Thor supplies.

"Is that supposed to help me feel better?"

"I don't know. Is it working?"

Bruce chuckles. "Okay, maybe. Anyway, I forget this person's name, or what he looked or sounded like, but he found me right when I came home from school one day, and he took me out and around town when my dad was mad at me or mad at something or there was just some sort of situation going on. I wish I could remember who that person was. Whoever it was really helped me through a rough time, and was one of the only ones to tell me that I had a great future ahead and people care about me."

People won't remember what you did or said, just that you were there. The voice's message rings in Thor's mind as his heart warms at all that Bruce is inadvertently saying about him.

It's me, Thor wants to say. That was me. I went back in time, I was there. It was me who did that. But he couldn't say anything. Maybe it was better if he didn't say anything. "Well, whoever it was, they sound great," he says instead.

"Yeah."

They go into another comfortable silence, both having minds full of many thoughts.

"Why?" Bruce asks suddenly.

"Why what?"

"Why do all this? What's so special about today?"

Thor laughs a little. "Not much."

"Well, I had fun today, so thank you."

Thor smiles. "You are welcome."

They look back out to the sunset.

"The sun's going down, Bruce," Thor points out casually. This has become something that they've done, ever since Sakaar. It's their little thing.

"They say it's not good to have leftover anger or thoughts when the sun goes down," Bruce responds in the same tone.

Thor pauses. His heart rate gets up a little. He doesn't get nervous often, but for some reason, what he's about to say is really nerve-racking. He takes a deep breath, but silent enough that Bruce won't easily notice it. "Actually, there is something..."

(Here we go.)

He sees that he has Bruce's full attention.

Now or never.

Taking another deep breath, here he goes. "Bruce, I've known you for six years now. When we met, I had no idea that we would have what we have today. We fought on the same side together, yes, but we didn't truly have real time together. Over the years, the Avengers came together and went their own separate ways again, and yet we still didn't spend that much time together. Then two years after Ultron, we met again on Sakaar, another planet, the last place I thought I would see you. We truly had time together there, and I realized how much I truly cared for you, how much you truly mean to me. You mean so much to me, Bruce. I can't bear the thought of having to be on any planet or moon or any realm without you ever again."

"Thor, that's sweet-" Bruce starts, but Thor's not done yet.

"When we first started dating, I was so happy. I never thought I would get there. And now we're here. And yet, there is one thing that's been on my mind..."

"Thor? What's going on?" Bruce asks nervously. He's preparing to be let down.

"This is something I need to do," Thor says. He makes sure that he's looking Bruce straight in the eye.

"Bruce, you are the man I love, the man I will always love. Bruce Banner..."

He gets down on one knee.

"...will you make me the happiest man alive..."

He pulls out the ring box and opens it to reveal the ring that Tony helped him pick out.

"...and marry me?"

"Thor..." Bruce says, stunned. "For real?"

"I have never meant anything more than I mean this."

Bruce smiles. He swallows. He has happy tears in his eyes.

"YES!" He throws his arms around Thor. Thor stands up, taking Bruce on his tip toes and higher with him.

They kiss.

Now they are more than just boyfriends.

They are engaged lovers.

And they are both happy.

The sun's going down.

And they are together.

Always will be.

And that's all that matters.

THE END

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I'M SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!

What did you guys think?! Awesome ending, right?!

Did that take too long to get to that moment?! I just wanted a lot of build up.

I. Love. This. So. Much.

Can you tell that I don't drink coffee by the way I was writing Tony's coffee thing? I just really wanted him to wave at spoon being over protective of Bruce, okay?

I still don't have sound time travel logic. I don't care.

Yeah, yeah, Compound and Tower are different. Sorry I mushed them, for all those hoping for accurate details.

Catch any grammar or spelling or anything? Tell me!

Comments are appreciated!!

In my world, Thor and Bruce are going to get married, so for me, that's all that matters.

I love how in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor says, "well, you're back now, and that's all that matters." And it kinda just stuck with me. Am I quoting it right? Someone tell me if I'm wrong, please?!

Okay, so there's the end. I love this story. It was such a joy to write. I hope you all love reading it as much as I loved writing it.

So even though that IS the end, read on (once I put it up) to the next page for an epilogue and a long (even longer than this one??????) Author's note.

I hope you enjoyed! :)

Please, no homophobia, profanities, hate, etc in the comment section.

Best,

~Your Beloved Author (who wishes/hopes that in Thor: Love and Thunder Thor and Bruce get together)
