38 Jake
The day goes by, and suddenly it's seven in the evening. Crip was able to leave, thank god, so he's stepping into the coffee shop. Over at a booth is Jake, who waves him down.
Crip takes a seat across from him, smiling softly.
Crip: "Hey."
Jake: "Hey. I ordered you a coffee for the road."
Crip: "Oh, thank you Jake."
Jake nods.
Jake: "So, how was your day?"
Crip: "Oh, you know, work." He laughs a bit.
Jake: "Where do you work at?"
Check, the usual story.
Crip: "I work at a convenient store...in the back." He adds quickly.
Jake: "Ah, that is a rough job."
He took the bait.
A lady brings Crip his coffee and the two head out, walking down the street.
Jake: "So, you work at a convenient store? Which one?"
Crip: "Uhhh, you know, the one by the library."
Jake: "I see. You must have a lot of friends."
Crip: "Hm?"
Jake: "Well, you've walked into the coffee shop with a few guys since I've been paying attention to you."
Crip: "Eh..uh-well, yeah they're old friends." He laughs nervously.
Hey, why is he snooping so much? What's up with this?
Jake: "The rich guy definitely doesn't like me it seems."
Crip: "Oh, Charlie's hard to get along with. I don't even like him."
Jake pauses, stopping their walk, looking at Crip very confused.
Jake: "But you hang around him?"
Shiiiiiiit.
Crip: "No-I mean, uh-"
Jake: "Do these friends..beat you?"
Oh my god. He's really digging deep.
Jake: "Are you..ok?"
Crip swallows, trying to catch his breath and calm down.
Crip: "They don't.."
Jake: "Not even Charlie?"
Crip is quiet, quickly picking up his coffee and drinking it.
Jake: "Are you a...prostitute?"
Crip spits his coffee, coughing a bit as he grabs his chest.
Crip: "Jake-please, stop it."
He finally says bluntly.
Jake smiles.
Jake: "I'm sorry Everett. I just...listen, I really like you. Like..really like you."
Crip blinks.
Another one caught in his web of lies.
Jake: "I want you to know, you don't have to..you know, hang around all these guys."
Crip: "With all due respect, I enjoy these people. They're my people."
Jake: "Oh. I understand. Do you think I could be apart of your people? Just give me a chance to get to know you better?"
Crip: "You don't know what you're getting into-"
Jake: "I don't care. Or-I don't mind, Everett. I like you. Nothing can drive me away. If you ever need someone, I'm here for you."
Crip smiles a bit. He was kind.
Crip: "Th-thank you..Jake."
Jake smiles.
Jake: "Can I kiss you? Just once?"
Crip nods, and Jake gently presses his lips against his. Jakes lips are soft, and he's gentle.
