Their heads turned towards me, waiting for my objection, and though their stares chilled me to the bone, I continued.

"He loved Mona."

"What?!" Carolina shrieked.

Mona seemed immobilized, mouth hanging open and hand on heart.

Kate began nodding slowly, but then faster when Carolina whipped a wide-eyed head in her direction.

"What?" She cried at Kate. "You knew?"

Kate nodded again, biting her lower lip and twisting a short lock of brown hair on her finger.

Carolina scanned the room.

"You all knew?"

"I didn't," Mona was able to stutter. "I had no idea."

Carolina took a few shaky breaths, not sounding any less livid.

Then she turned on me.

"I want to see the evidence."
