When the man's eyes had adjusted to the blinding light, the look of horror on his face was hard to miss.
Mano, on the other hand, looked more dangerous than I had ever seen him before.
"Gabriel, so nice of you to join me."
---
Silence covered the room like a heavy blanket as I watched recognition and disbelief flash over Gabriel's face.
Romano looked like he usually did, cocky, confident, and completely unaffected.
I walked to Mano's side so I could better gauge Gabriel's expressions, standing next to the armchair he was leisurely lying in.
Gabriel glanced at me for a short second before pursing his lips and turning back to Romano.
"What do you want?" Gabriel asked, his voice lower than I had expected it to be.
Mano cocked his head, his eyes twinkling in mischief.
"I just want to jog your memory."
No matter how many times I tried to ask Mano why he wanted to talk to the guy before killing him, he wouldn't tell me, now I was wishing that he had told me.
I've always hated playing with my food before eating it.
Gabriel looked up at me again, no trace of emotion on his face.
"Is this the assassin you chose?" He asked, his eyes locked with mine.
Mano didn't look up at me, instead choosing to lean forward slightly, his face turning more dangerous as he tried to get the attention of the tied-up man.
"We're not here to talk about assassins, Gabriel."
Gabriel tore his eyes away from mine and took in Mano's expression before a slow and leisurely grin grew on his face.
"She's a pretty one, it's a wonder how you can focus with her around." He taunted, clearly wanting to get under Mano's skin and unfortunately succeeding in doing so.
I kept all emotion off my face, I wasn't affected by his words, it was nothing I hadn't heard before.
Mano's hands clenched the sides of the armchair as if he had a vengeance against it.
"Oh, have I hit a nerve?" He asked, obviously amused by the reaction he had squeezed out of his captor.
His eyes flicked between Mano and me before his smile grew wider.
"Don't tell me, you have feelings for her?"
If it was even possible, Mano's grip on the chair tightened even more as Gabriel broke out in maniacal laughter.
My eyes drifted to Mano who was trying his best to control his anger before drifting to Gabriel who was finding too much amusement in this.
I had to take control.
Without a second thought, I flung the knife I had clutched in my palm at Gabriel, scratching the side of his face and landing in the chair behind him.
His laughing halted as the pain registered.
My face impassive, I walked over and retrieved my knife.
As I bent down to reach for my weapon, I whispered in his ear.
"Don't forget who's in charge here."
I swiftly turned and made my way back to my place by Romano's side, my feet spread and my hands clasping the knife behind my back.
"Mr Acerbi, continue."
Mano turned to me, his eyes meeting mine in a silent thank you and quiet disbelief, his hands relaxing and his face returning to the sinister smirk he wore when Gabriel first sat down.
Just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, I felt something trickle down my leg.
Not now.
Mentally going over the calendar in my head, it dawned on me that I had been at Mano's place for a month.
A month.
I unconsciously blocked out Mano's interrogating questions, my whole brain focusing on how I was going to get to the bathroom without arousing any suspicion.
There was no way.
Without a second thought, I turned and made my way out of the living room, refusing to face Mano's most likely confused expression.
I was a woman on a mission.
Recalling the floor plan that I had studied, I found the bathroom and looked through the cupboards, hoping to find something, anything, to conceal the crime scene in my trousers.
My eyes drifted to the toilet paper before I shook my head, I was not about to makeshift a pad.
I looked through another cupboard, reaching all the way to the back but pulling away after finding nothing of any importance.
I looked on top of the counter and mentally cursed myself, they were hiding in plain sight.
I cleaned myself up and left the bathroom, making my way back to the two men I had left behind.
When I got there, I froze.
Romano, with a look of pure determination on his face, had his gun pressed to Gabriel's forehead.
Even if we had come to kill him, a gin wouldn't be the best, it would alert authorities way too fast.
"Mano, no."
He didn't take his eyes away from Gabriel and I could tell that he was past the point of redemption.
He wanted to shoot him.
He wanted it too much.
"Mano, yes." He said, slowly taking the safety off of his gun.
I carefully made my way towards him, noticing how his chest was rising and falling at a rapid rate, getting ready to pull the trigger.
Before he could do it, I leaned over the sofa and gently wrapped my hand around his, forcing him to look up at me.
I hesitantly pulled his gun away from Gabriel's head and from his hand.
Gabriel let out an audible sigh of relief but it was short-lived, without any time for him to register what was going on I pressed my hand over his mouth and plunged my knife deep into his heart.
I waited for a few minutes, my hand not leaving his mouth even as he lost consciousness, only lifting it when I knew for sure that he was dead.
"I hope your conversation was done because you're not getting any answers out of him now," I said, pulling the knife out of his chest and sheathing it, blood and all.
"Uh, no we were done," Mano whispered, a little shocked by my abrupt choice.
I met his eyes and sighed.
"The gun would be too loud."
He mutely nodded, following me to the exit before he stopped and grasped my shoulder.
"We're going out on the fire escape again?" He questioned, not able to stop his voice from wavering.
The corners of my lips turned upwards.
I walked away from Mano and opened the door, landing on the metal frame he was so scared of.
I smiled at him, feeling the wind as it whipped my hair around my face and I extended my hand out to him.
He looked at me before gazing down at my outstretched and bloodied hand, a small smile gracing his lips.
Shutting the door behind him, he placed his hand in mine.
