Chapter 58 | The Royal Funeral
The priest stood before Isadora's population and all those who travelled and gathered at the Palace grounds. There before them were two white closed coffins displayed as the elite worlds of the districts had attended the funeral of The Queen and Princess of the two worlds.
"...finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.
Put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground.
And after you have done everything to stand against the wiles of the devil..."
Eko had stood close to Madison, the priest's words filtering barely in her brain, hands grasping one another. She thought she was strong enough to deal with this. But being here in this space, amongst the hearts that were crying, had taken control of any sanity she held left.
The soldiers of the academies had been on watch; thousands upon millions attended, it seemed, from every district that held allegiance to the two worlds. It was overpowering what this grief was doing to her.
"...for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world..."
She remembered the moment she awoke when the palace was attacked, the fear in her bones when the reapers were killing everyone she had ever known, had ever cared about and loved had sent her heart into her throat.
Blood was spilt against the walls and bodies amongst the masses in the hallways as these creatures roamed about taking the lives of anyone they could get a hold of.
She could smell the stench of death that filled her lungs and the echoing screams and explosions she was sure were the civilians of the moon that were being tortured and killed in the attack.
Torturous pain consumed her, gripping her heart like a vice lock, she felt her powers spark at her fingers tips. Madison's sobs echoed, bringing a tissue to her nose, gasping for air that brought Eko back to her world.
"...creator of all life that is our lord, and our maiden mother, hear our prayers in our troubled hours..."
"That could have been us," the shivering woman beside her whispered, forcing a tight grip on her cousin's hand, allowing her to feel something amongst this pain.
Turning softly, Eko stared at the woman, collecting what she wanted to say before she softly nodded.
"But it wasn't. We're ok. We'll be ok together,"
"We will; we will be safe again, I promise you that."
"If you think that's what's best, Mads."
"...against spiritual wickedness in high places..."
"We'll be safe at Sea-tac. We'll be away from all of this. Then once this has settled, we'll make our move to Mein without suspicion. Promise me, as long as you don't do anything dumb and go find Ezra yourself; then we'll be ok together."
Eko nodded, "it's taking everything not to turn up to her doorstep and break her neck. If I could."
Madison doesn't say much except to lean her head on Eko's shoulder, "I know. I know, especially for them."
The brunette looked forward at the coffins, and in her moment of weakness, breaking under the gravity of her situation, she finally felt the tears fall from her face and made no attempt to stop them.
There were still moments, as much as she tried to hide it when she could hear the cries around her.
When she could hear the begging of people to be saved.
Of watching the reapers suck the souls from the servants around her, friends, she had known. People she had grown up with, and now, her world was more broken than ever, and she felt utterly powerless to stop their enemy.
This world was a new one that she terribly hated, and truth be told, she didn't know exactly where she had fit in with it all.
But she knew that she didn't want it; she knew she had lost faith in it all, and all that was running through her bones was the urge to kill Ezra and lay victorious on the battlefield as the afterlife consumed her.
That's what she really wanted if anyone dared to ask her at that moment. She wanted it to end, and she wanted to be with her family in the beyond.
"...hallowed God, wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day,
and having done all, to stand, for we need you now in our time of need.
Guide ye may heavenly mother and her daughter into your embrace, upon the holy lands, redeemer of souls.
Wrap them with your warmth from our wicked world...."
awww babes..... give a vote if Eko's sadness just makes you wanna hug her...
Seriously? You won't even vote to hug the woman? WOOOWWW!
