Chapter 27 | "It's Not Her Smartest Attribute."

"I have a mind!" Madison couldn't get the abhorrent fear out quickly enough to her cousin when they were out of earshot of anyone. Both able bodies boarded the ship, intently watching the manic stream of people who managed to escape their enemies with only minor casualties.

The soldiers' timely arrival had undoubtedly been fortunate for the crash site, but it had resulted in overcrowding. The extra aircraft that came to their aid meant that they had to unload some of the survivors before they could continue their search for the Princess.

Once aboard the aircraft, Eko listened as Madison continued to vent about her life choices, a familiar droning that she had heard countless times before.

Eko knew Madison's speech by heart; every word was etched in her memory. The speech emphasized that Eko's role was more significant than just fighting monsters and risking her safety. She was the future heiress and had to bear the weight of that responsibility. Eko had heard this countless times before.

It seemed like Eko's importance to the world overshadowed everything else, a notion that had been drilled into her repeatedly. Meanwhile, Madison continued to ramble on, asking rhetorical questions she was never meant to answer.

"Why do you need to fight when there are bases dedicated to it?" Madison's one of several rhetroical questions irked her at that stage.

"Why are you so pigheaded and stubborn?" Eko quipped back.

"You are the last heir to this world. They need you more than you understand. Have you lost some form of your brain cells to comprehend that? Do you want me to slap you? Is that what this is coming to?"

Blah, blah, blah... Truthfully, it was a light buzz in her mind these days; what captured her attention, however, was the bickering noise of a couple. The same she overheard that would appear now were tearing shreds off one another.

On her heel continuing away, Eko noticed curiously as she made her way to the bickering pair that it had been Mya and Richie. Both were pointing at one another and inaudible words of pure screaming.

The couple had forgotten about their world; whatever fight they had with each other commanded the atmosphere.

Mad's voice was back in her senses suddenly, and Eko rolled her eyes, addressing her cousin.

"Honestly, I was fine. I am fine," as though that would be the end of it, "this concern isn't warranted. You know that, right? Besides, what have I told you about all this extra fretting? You're going to end up in a panic attack again."

"Fretting, Sera?"

"Eko. Remember, not Sera... Eko!"

"I cannot believe you haven't told them, and then you would use a fake alias for these people."

"How is it fake? Technically, it's a part of my name."

Madison scoffed before groaning in annoyance.

"I seriously am this close to just punching you," indicating with the signal of her hand how close she was to losing her temper, "what were you thinking out there? What are you thinking about this whole situation?"

"Same thing, I think every time I fight against those things?" the memories she has fondly of those epic times forced her to smile to herself.

Madison shook her head at her cousin's stupid, giddy expression as they entered back onboard the ship that echoed loud demands from a certain Commander trying to prep their departure immediately from the site.

"Besides, he had it covered. I was in no danger whatsoever."

Then for some reason, Eko glanced up and found herself locked in with bold blue steel eyes, a gaze from the Commander that she couldn't shake, his presence that made her heart quicken when he approached.

"Such a leech." Madison muttered to herself. She would need to deal with this problem immediately if this continued.

"I see you haven't gotten into any further trouble?" The sarcastic remark came with a wide-faced grin that instantly caused her cheeks to burn when she smiled back at him.

"Nothing that I could find," she offered to shrug, "besides, we had it covered out there. No sweat."

"That indeed," he nodded, Eko noticing as his tablet lowered and his attention remained on her, "it helps when I have someone that knows what they're doing on the field."

"Yes, well, unfortunately, Eko has a thick brain when it comes to danger." Madison scolded, "it's not her smartest attribute."

Immediately his instincts were right. Madison had not approved of that lifestyle, nor did she approve of the academies and their methods from what he got from her.

The last place she probably had expected was to end up at a base with soldiers.

However, Matthew nodded politely, even if those were his few observations, "more reason that training is open if, of course, you would like to join tonight. The survivors will be staying at Isadora's base until relocation."

Eko's mood shifted once again because this was something she could work with;

A) There was no guaranteed time of when they would be leaving Allegiant, which meant there was more groundwork she could do to gain access to Ezra.

B) She got to hang around this insatiable man for a while longer.

Like a child at Christmas, Eko nodded, beaming at the man before another soldier demanded his request, and his expression changed to that of his Commander title.

"Excuse me," he abruptly left them. He returned to the docks in their last preparations before departure and disappeared amongst the crowd.

"See, all good, Mads. You got to relax."

"See, all good. Ser," she mocked her.

"What did I just say!"

"And I will relax when this whole catastrophe of a nightmare gets sorted! When we go home!"

"Home?" Eko scoffed; clearly, it had not been what Madison wanted to hear. The woman stormed further inside, leaving the poor brunette to shake her head. Madison was an entirely different situation she was going to have to manage.

Before she got any further with her thoughts, there was that bickering noise she heard coming from outside again. It would appear that Mya and Richie had moved their fight around the ship, and before she could investigate, Jasmine had popped into her senses.

"If you're thinking of asking what that is about, don't." Jasmine's bobbing purple hair caught Eko's attention as she turned to the lively and friendly soldier that folded her arms next to her.

"Right," Eko half smiled awkwardly, "that's completely normal. Wasn't your hair pink? I meant to ask before."

"Thanks for noticing, babe," her smile reached ear to ear, "I got over it; Katie had done it last night, and I'm finding it more suiting. Oh, back to your previous question, yea, babes totally normal for them."

The screaming continued outside as some soldiers scampered inside, shaking their heads.

Both Eko and Jasmine watched their exhausted expressions as though this wasn't anything new.

"Usually, the Headmaster doesn't allow them both on the same mission. It's part of a contract or something," she shrugged, "this is completely a one-off thing. They're super volatile together."

"The screaming is evident of that fact," Eko murmured as the abhorrent abuse picked up, and as though on cue, Jesse appeared from nowhere, shaking her head as she made her way past the girls towards the chaos of the couple.

"Jaz, can you begin the docking preparations? I need to sort out these two." she was furious, to say the least, with how she barked at Jasmine.

"Sure!" her purple hair swayed back and forth, and Jesse disappeared outside. Jasmine, however, grabbed hold of Eko's hand and pulled her along the ship.

"Come on. You can come and help me."

"No, I really wanted to see Jesse lose her shit," Eko smirked as the screaming outside forced the couple to stop their arguments.

"Pft," Jasmine scowled, "Jesse is forever screaming. You'll probably get front-row seats to that tonight anyway."

Again, Jesse has sat down with me....she's not entirely happy.... so she's called this meeting to discuss with you, your attitude.....

She just wants you to vote before she takes this to HR... she's deeming it harassment ....

So........ chop, chop... hit the vote button!
