Chapter 2
I didn't see the face at first.
I was probably as white as sheet.
It was magnificently bright. I staggered backwards. Shielding my face from the light. I was afraid but I knew that I saw a smile on his face.
The drive home was silent as always but, I wasn't silent inside me.
What was that?
Who was that?
Am I sane?
Am I seeing things?
Is my imagination that wild?
I'm never going to church again.
But, I want to find out why that person was smiling at me.
Dad won't understand.
I should ask him.
Why does that girl care so much about me?
Why is her name Love?
Why am I taking this too serious?
I stared down at my notes and circled the word 'Love' with my pen.
Before long, we got home and as usual went out again for our shopping.
I picked some writing materials, some jotters, some toiletries and something that caught my eye at the cashier's desk.
A teen devotional.
Dad glanced at me and smiled when he saw that I picked the devotional book.
After paying, we got into the car and drove home. I never had this feeling ever in my life before.
At home, I bounced on my bed. Devotional in hand. I opened it and located the day. September 16.
The title was 'The Commandments'
I didn't know how, but I knew that my 'feeling' had instantly turned to anger. I flung the book across the room.
I spent the rest of the day reading an e-novel. It was about a Mafia and a girl. My dream life...*sighs dreamily*
I watched television when my dad turned on the Generator. I sipped a bit of my dad's alcohol and slept after arranging my school stuff.
That night, I kept hearing movements from under my bed. I was trying my best to ignore it but it became louder. It was a thumping noise. I used my pillow to muffle the noise. It worked but it didn't stop the sound of Dad speaking in this annoying alien language which made my hair stand on end.
When I slept, I had no dream. As usual.
I woke to pee in the middle of the night. Dad was still praying or whatever you call it, I didn't bother.
When I woke up the next morning, I made sure that it was morning this time, I had my bath quickly and dressed in my uniform. It didn't fit me from my perspective. I didn't like it anyway.
I walked over to my Dad's room which was now silent. I told him that I was ready.
He had sunken eyes with bags below them.
He didn't sleep at all?
"Migwor Daddy."
"I can't take you to school today. You'll have to go yourself. You'll catch the bus."
I'll take my greetings back thank you very much. It's even better. I want to go myself.
"Did you hear me?"
I'm not deaf! Ah!
I nodded.
"Off you go. Pack yourself a lunch. I bought cheese."
I nodded.
I never even liked cheese.
"Snacks money?" I asked.
"You always remember snacks. You and your big stature. All you know is food. " He said mockingly before putting some notes into my palm.
I usually got sad and cried whenever someone teased me about my body.
I threw him a sarcastic smile and made a 180 degree turn and made my way to the kitchen. I packed a lunch of bread, mayonnaise, a watermelon smoothie and a bottle of water.
I made my way to the gate Daddy tagging along. I opened the gate, waved but just before I could turn back, I saw or at least, I thought I saw.., a flash of lightening so close to the ground just behind my father. I fell to the ground. Dad didn't notice. He locked the gate. I was very afraid.
When I regained my sight, which buzzed off for some minutes, I noticed that a boy was right in front of me. He offered me a hand to lift me up. It was still dark.
I didn't accept.
I got up myself.
"Hi." He said.
I looked intently at him. He was wearing the same uniform with me. (The male version) He had a smile on his face. He was a few inches taller than me. He was also scanning me.
"I said hi."
I looked at him and spun on my heel and began walking to the bus stop. He was following closely behind.
When he's tired, he'll stop bothering me.
I sat close to the door. I saw other students with the uniform. He sat next to me. I tried my best to ignore him. My mother told me to always stay clear from the male species. 'You can never trust them. They are dangerous.' she'd say.
When we got to school, I got down and walked into the building. I saw a school map and found my way to the year 11 classes. My brain and my heart were trying to understand why I had been seeing things. Still, I had no answer.
I took a seat in the middle of the class and brought out a book to draw. Why? I didn't know what else to do.
I was way to early. The first class was to start by 9am and it was just seven am. I scanned my surroundings. It was a small class with about twenty chairs and tables. A girl strolled in. She was skinny and looked semi-crazy. Other's followed behind her. Last to enter was the boy who offered me a hand earlier and a huge woman.
I rolled my eyes. They all stood to greet her. I didn't and the skinny girl didn't either. The teacher didn't seem to mind.
Her name was Mrs Pako and she taught English. The rest of the class was boring. We had ten subjects with two breaks. During the break, I talked with the skinny girl. She was also Urhobo and yes, she was actually semi-crazy.
She stole money and bought some snacks.
Her name is Anome.
