Chapter 6: No More Secrets
You have just arrived on Earth to find the hacker the Trader told you about.
You received a call from Faye on your terminal.
Faye: "How did your trip go?"
"It wasn't fun flying through that debris field, but I made it."
Faye: "Why did you go to Earth again?"
"Trader told me about someone and I'm going to see if I can make a new contact."
Faye: "Alright. I'll be hanging out here on Mars. Know some very fun places to visit."
"You better not get yourself killed, and don't waste those guns I let you take. They're good quality, but they do run out of ammo."
Faye: "I won't, so just relax. Since we've been working for a while, and I somewhat trust you more than everyone else in this star system, I might have something to tell you after you pick me up."
"Whatever. Just don't spend all our money."
You hung up and got out of the ship to Earth. You saw a bunch of debris and ruins that stretched out for miles.
"I guess that beach was one of the last few places untouched," you said as you put on your helmet.
You continued walking and saw the location where the coordinates lead to. You used your helmet to scan the area and detected traps and someone clearing hiding inside the building.
You dodged the traps and pulled out your gun and opened the door. You look around and heard something walking.
You stood guard and grabbed what was causing the sound and pointed your gun at it.
"A kid?"
"Hello, I'm Edward, what brings you to my base today?"
You put her down and thought about the name and the coordinates.
"Edward... as in, Radical Edward?"
Edward: "That seems to be what people call Edward. Come over here, I've got to show you something."
You followed her and saw the pictures of you and Faye when they were taking bounties.
Ed: "You and the girl recently came to Earth searching for a microchip storing medical information."
"You really are Radical Edward."
You pulled the corrupt data chip from your pocket and showed it to Ed, who looked at it in wonder.
"There was something else on the ship that I grabbed, but it was corrupted. I'm wondering if you might be able to salvage the information stored on it."
Ed: "Edward will see what she can do."
She inserted the chip into her terminal and began salvaging the data.
Ed: "But, Edward wants a favor after this."
"What favor?"
Ed: "When I get finished, I would like to join the crew."
"We'll discuss it if you get the data undamaged and uncorrupted."
Ed: "Okay!"
She proceeded to salvage the data.
Meanwhile, on Mars, Faye is gambling and waiting for the race to finish. She called you up once more.
Faye: "How long are you going to be there?"
"I'll get-- soo-- I--" was all you said due to the weak connection on Faye's end.
Faye: "What's with him? He's been acting weird ever since that last job."
Back on Earth, Edward finishes salvaging the data and handed it to you.
You inserted the chip into your helmet and looked at what's stored on it.
It's all about Faye Valentine. It has her birthdate, blood type, and even an accident she ended up in. It ended with her being in put in cryogenic sleep until the medical technology to treat her injuries can be developed.
Edward waved her hands around in excitement.
Ed: "So, about that fa--"
You left before she noticed.
You hopped back onto the ship and flew over to Mars to pick up Faye.
"Why didn't Faye bring her past up?" you wondered. "Was she trying to hide it? Or did the accident do more than damage her body?"
You sat in silence for a moment.
"I probably should keep this to myself for now."
You docked the ship at the Harbor and picked up Faye.
Faye: "What did you do on Earth?"
"You won't believe who I met."
Faye: "Who?"
"Radical... Edward."
Faye: "Are you serious?"
"Dead serious. And guess what? She's a kid."
Faye: "You had a fun time."
"Tt wasn't fun, it was business," you stated. "Do you have something to tell me?"
Faye: "I do. Like I said, you are one of the few people I actually trust in this galaxy."
"Anything else?"
Faye: "Let me tell you my story: I woke up one day but couldn't remember anything about my past. I met a man that claimed to be an insurance agent sent to help me, but ended up leaving me with a huge debt."
"Then you ended up being a con woman, got into trouble with loan sharks, then there was the job I was supposed to secure you and ended up turning in some of said loan sharks."
Faye: "Yeah. Did Radical Edward want something?"
"She wanted to join the crew, but I ditched her after she handed me the shard."
Faye: "Should we bring her onto the ship?"
"Do you really think so?"
Faye: "It might save us some Woolongs to have someone that knows electronics and how to get around systems than having to constantly purchase one-use programs."
You groaned as you took the ship to Earth to pick up Edward. Edward excitedly hopped onboard and brought along her terminal.
Faye: "She really is a kid."
"Yep."
As everyone sat around, Faye drank some wine while you sat down with your eyes closed. Faye looked at you as you lie down on the couch.
"What?"
Faye: "Do you have a past?"
"I've been on my own the whole time. The only person I trusted was a bounty hunter who showed me the ropes and told me to fight to survive."
Faye: "People good for us are hard to come by."
You cracked a small smile and opened your eyes.
"You could say that again."
