Chapter. 2: Apprehension
Jax had never been more afraid in his life. He ran down the road, constantly glancing back in hopes of seeing his father but always being met with an empty street. He cried, cried in fear, cried in worry, cried in pain. "Please be okay, Dad. You have to be okay. I'll go get Mom and the girls and we'll come help you." He thought as his tears continued to stream down his small, blue-eyed face. He hated those bulldogs, hated them for killing the poor kitten, hated them for attacking him and his father, and hated them simply for existing in the first place. "I never want to see, hear, or even smell another bulldog again. Ever." The solemnity of his own thoughts scared him, so he just stopped thinking about it and instead focused on his current goal: getting home. It might take a whole half-hour, but if that's what it took to get sure medical help, that's what he needed to do. For Dad.
As he ran into the alleyway that doubled as his family clinic, his 8-year-old sister Ingrid stopped him in his tracks.
"Jax! Calm down!" She almost shouted as Jax struggled to get past her firm grip, but she held him right. "What's wrong? I thought you went with Dad to the other side of town to get food with him?"
Jax's eyes blazed with determination and fear, all at once. "Bulldogs have Dad! They're going to ki him! I need Mom! We need to get him help before he dies!" He cried, tears now falling down his cheeks as his white-coloured sibling finally let him loose. "Mom! Mom!" Jax screamed for his mother in an almost hyateric state, while Ingrid finally began to process what was happening. With her mind now kicked into high gear, she ran into the clinic past Jax and began assembling a medical kit to take along.
Angelica came around the alley corner in a state of high alert and worry, thinking there was a new patient who needed immediate attention at the clinic. She sprinted over rto Jax, who was standing facing the "facility"'s entrance, still calling her name. "What Jax!? Where's the patient!?" She said, trying to maintain her doctor like composure.
"It's Dad! He being attacked by a gang of dogs on the other side of town! We gotta help him! Those dogs are drunk, they kill him!" Said Jax, who now had been running, screaming, and talking so much he thought he might pass out.
Her son's explanation was a she needed, but before she could say anything or act, Ingrid quickly handed her mother a medical supply kit, with everything they might need for an assault victim. With a nod, Angelica turned to the clinic and yelled to her 9-year-old daughter, "Sabina, watch the clinic! I have an emergency call! Dad's in trouble and he needs my help! I'll be back in a little while!" And with that, Jax, Angelica, and Ingrid sped out of the alleyway, Jax leading them on to the opposite side of Chattilan, to save Piccolo.
Meanwhile...
Piccolo was long past being exhausted, if that makes any sense. His thin feline legs could barely hold him up as he struggled to keep himself up as he stared down the bulldogs on the other side of the alley, who weren't even winded in the slightest. Piccolo knew he couldn't take down the bulldogs; it was a losing battle. Still, he was going to give it his very best, and keep stalling the brutes till he could figure out a better way to save the poor kitten, who by now looked like he had passed out-or died.
The dogs began to charge again, but unlike before, they didn't stop before him to swat him, pounce on him, growl-nothing! They ran full force straight at him, howling in pure rage now that this puny runt of a cat was trying to ruin their fun, and getting away with it. The bunch had actually began to lose interest in the helpless kitten, who now lay behind them, dying on the cold hard pavement. Instead, they simply wanted to dispose of the nuisance and leave. So, without further ado, this time they were going to kill him, and not painlessly either. Piccolo had no strength left in his frail state, and as he tried to stumble-run away, his legs collapsed, earning a gasp from the white and black cat. He knew he was screwed, and looked back in pure horror as the dogs careened straight for him. "I'm so sorry, Jax." He thought as he closed his eyes, and awaited his impending doom.
