Land Ho! Captains Private Log
December 20th 1492
The coast came into view, an answer to our fervent prayers! We had been running dangerously low on water, our efforts at collecting rainwater had been lackluster at best. The rough seas spilled most of it and then the oppressive heat had evaporated much of the precious drinking water. What remained had a fine film of foul tasting algae on the surface. We sailed along the jagged coast for three days, trying to find a safe cove in which to anchor. This was a vast and dangerous land. We noted coral reefs teeming with sea life, brightly colored fish and even sea snakes the colors of which I've never seen. More disturbingly we saw the monsters of the deep lurking below in the crystal clear waters. Young Marco was nearly inconsolable when he saw the dark shapes thrashing about in the surf. I cant say that I blame him. I'm weary of entering the small rowboats with sharks of that size in the water. The marine life is vast, so I am hopeful that the land will also reveal to be bountiful.
The Pina did sustain serious damage to her hull after striking some jagged rocks. We now have ropes affixed to her and will be limping her to land for repairs. That is if we can find a location suitable for three ships. The sheer cliffs of this new world look unconquerable.
Ever my confidante,
Columbus
