You're All That I Can See

Diya sat inside her car, breathing deeply to calm her nerves. Staring out of her windshield at the beach, she gathered her courage to go and join the people standing out there.

It had been ten years since they had all come together. The last time they had all seen each other, they had just finished high school and were so full of dreams and ambitions. They had promised to call everyday, but those promises hadn't lasted a year. Then, out of the blue, she got a call from the past, calling her to a reunion.

She almost turned back, when one of them noticed her sitting in the car and began to gesture excitedly. Swallowing a sigh, she stepped out.

"D-Diya? Oh my gosh! It is you!" A short, pudgy woman exclaimed, pulling her into a hug. It took her a few moments to connect her to the petite, hyperactive girl she once called best friend.

"Hi, Lalita." She greeted, before greeting the others awkwardly. They greeted her back boisterously, and pulled her into their conversations. It didn't take her long to realise that the rest of them had mostly stayed in touch with each other.

She had drifted away, she realised with a pang, glad that nobody called her out on it.

It was an hour later, when one of them had set up some music and made a makeshift dance floor, that she noticed him. He was tall and broad-shouldered, looking like those smoldering hot guys you see on Jockey® billboards. The catchiest thing about him, however, was his gaze; it was trained on her.

Like her, he had opted out of dancing, preferring to stand at the table of refreshments the other side of the dance floor, exactly across the log on which she was sitting. His arms crossed over his chest, he surveyed her, and she found herself wondering what he thought.

Noticing her gaze, he smirked back at her, walking into the crowd, straight at her, eyes not leaving her. She briefly entertained the idea of leaving the place, but squelched the irrational urge.

"Let me guess, you don't remember me." He chuckled, settling down next to her.

She shrugged, not bothering to deny it.

"Should I? You don't look familiar." She eyed him, subtly checking him out before she reined herself in.

"Ouch! We used to be great friends! You used to give me your lunch because I loved your mom's cooking, and you would gobble up my boxful." He commented, clutching his heart, feigning pain.

Her eyes widened.

"Mayank? How? You used to be shorter than me!" She blurted out, before biting her lips.

He laughed.

"A miracle called growth spurt. It finally happened. So how have you been? Mind you, I am just being polite. I have been keep track of you all these years. One of India's youngest entrepreneurs. You really did it, huh?" He turned to face her, pushing his hair back casually.

"Mayank, not only do you look different, you have become different. I did not know you took stalking up as a hobby." She smirked, half-joking.

"Oh, you wish, Diya! I am a journalist, I tend to know the who's who of the country. I must say, girl, you made us proud. I had to physically restrain Lalita from pulling you into a bear hug at your last press release. She decided to tag along when I told her it was your interview." His smile was contagious, and she found herself smiling.

"Lalita was there? You were there? I didn't know!" She exclaimed.

"Aayush was there too. He and Lalita are married by the way. Turns out some relationships last in high school." He grinned.

"Why don't I know any of this?" She laughed, eyes falling on the married couple, remembering the days she had teased them about their undying love.

"Well, you got busy. You deactivated your social media accounts. But it is worth it, you made your dream come true." He squeezed her hand comfortingly.

"What about your dreams? Did they come true?" She asked, eyes roving over familiar strangers.

She turned to face him, only to find him looking at her.

"What is it?" She asked, pushing her hair back.

"Our class is a huge crowd, you know. It has always been. Each of us is noisy and loud, catching attention." He said randomly.

Scrunching her eyebrows, she opened her mouth to ask him what he was going on about, when he continued.

"But my eyes were always drawn to this one girl. Even now. Hell, Diya, here we are, it's you and me and all of the people, and I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you." He blurted, standing up.

She gaped at him, surprised.

"There you were, lost and out of your element. When I saw you in your car, on the verge of driving away, I knew I couldn't let you go. You are one of my dreams, and I had to try." He faced her earnestly, almost pleading.

"I don't understand. I mean, I never knew..." she floundered for words.

"Of course you didn't! You had your dreams, and I didn't want to distract you from it. But I know something is here. I mean, you did check me out today." He smirked at the end.

"I did not!" She denied hotly, feeling a blush come on.

"Oh, yes, you did. It is okay. I checked you out too. Repeatedly." He admitted unabashedly, winked at her.

She laughed, startled.

"Just tell me this, Ms. Entrepreneur, in this crowd of people, didn't you feel like it was just you and me? Even for a moment?" He asked, not waiting for an answer. Walking into the mass of dancing bodies, he turned and met her eyes with a silent invitation to join him in more than just a dance.

She accepted the offer.
