It Started As A Cold Pt. 1

Don't ask...

I wake up to another pounding headache and sore joints. My throat feels raspy and sore and I feel ridiculously hot under my black doona. I turn my head and grab my phone. I check the time and realise I only have twenty minutes until my alarm would usually go off. I turn my phone back off and rest it on the bedside table again. I slowly get up and feel myself getting light-headed but I ignore it. I shuffle over to the light switch and flick it. My room gets illuminated with a blinding light. I look around for my school bag where I have like five packets of Nurofen ready to take. I pop two tablets out and stick them in my mouth. I grab a glass of water and down it, taking the pills with it.

It's been two weeks since I've been getting sick. I just presume it's the cold. I'm not concerned about it being anything more because it is winter and really cold. I lay down on my bed, waiting for the pills to settle in. They never really do much. They help with my headache and my high body temperature but I still get light-headed and dizzy a lot. The aching in my joints has only worsened to the point where it's starting to hurt with the slight movement. I've noticed some weird lumps on the lower part of my neck and on my armpits as well.

I get off my bed and cautiously make my way over to my wardrobe and change into my school uniform. I grab my surprisingly heavier school bag, slip on my shoes with a lot of effort and walk out of my room and down into the common area. I make my way into the kitchen and make myself a cup of coffee. As I do, Shitty Hair comes up beside me. "Hey Bakubro!"

"Stop calling me that, Shitty Hair," I growl at him quieter than usual.

"Are you ok, Bakugou? You seem a lot more tired lately and like you've lost a lot of weight," he says, concerned.

"I'm fine." I grab the now full cup of coffee and walk over to an empty table. I sit down with a plonk and slowly drink my life force. Kirishima sits down beside me.

"Are you sure? You don't look ok to me."

"I already told you, I'm fine." He looks at me with an I-don't-believe-you expression. I groan.

"I've just got a cold, alright? Now will you stop talking?" I explain angrily. He shows off his shark teeth in a big grin. I roll my eyes and continue to drink, hoping to gather enough energy to be able to focus in class.

~Time Skip~

Class started about twenty minutes ago and I'm already feeling exhausted and my eyelids slowly closing. I force them to stay open for as long as I can by tuning Mr. Hizashi out. I focus on keeping my eyelids open for as long as possible but I don't know how much longer I can do it. "Bakugou!" I look up and see a huge amount of blonde hair.

"Yeah?" I ask, tiredly.

"Don't blank out in class or you won't become a hero!" He shouts and does some weird poses. I stare at him blankly. "Now tell us the word that best fits this sentence!" I look up at the board and figure it out in an instant.

"Bec-" I suddenly black out.

I wake up to a white ceiling. I shakily sit up and look around only to notice I'm in the nurse's office. My head hurts and my muscles do as well. My abdomen feels really sore (A.N: You girls know what's up... Stupid periods deserve to rot in hell, don't you agree?).

Suddenly, an all too familiar old lady walks towards me, staring at me with a disappointed look on her face. "What?!" I shout angrily.

"You need to take better care of yourself. You look like a twig and very tired. Don't push yourself too hard or you'll end up in the hospital," she tells me.

"Whatever," I mumble. My shaky limbs turn me so my feet are dangling off the edge of the bed. As I'm about to push myself up, Recovery Girl hits me in the shin with her walking stick.

"Don't be so ignorant. You won't be able to walk for a while," she scolds me.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"It's just what happens. Now lie down and get some rest you idiotic boy." I hesitantly listen to her and lie down in the comfy bed, immediately drifting off into a deep sleep.

Once again, I get awoken but this time it's from voices. I open my eyes and see all too familiar flocks of rainbow hair. "Bakugou!" Mina shouts and pulls me into a rib cracking hug.

"Get off me, Racoon Eyes!" I say with a strained voice. She lets go and looks at me with concern.

"What happened Bakugou? Why'd you black out?" She asks.

"yeah, bro. What happened?" Flex Tape asks.

I roll my eyes. "I don't know. Get the Old Lady to tell you," I tell them in my most angry voice. I don't know why, but I'm so tired.

"It's likely the flu," Recovery Girl informs my worried classmates.

Kirishima looks at her in slight confusion. "What do you mean, 'likely'?"

Recovery Girl seems a little taken back by his words but regains her composure. "It could be a cold but if not, the flu," she tells them.

"So can I go now?" I ask, slightly annoyed with being in here for so long. She looks at me with a slight bit of pity.

"I'd like to talk to you in private for a short while." She turns to the others in the room and shoos them out of the room. She shuts the door behind her and looks up at me with concern.

"What?" I sit up, ignoring the pain in my abdomen and dangle my legs off the side of the bed. Recovery Girl waddles over to her desk and grabs a clipboard and walks over to me. She pulls a chair directly in front of me and sits on it.

"I need you to answer these questions honestly," she says and looks at the clipboard. I nod at her slowly. "Have you fainted before?" She looks up at me.

"No." She continues to look at me.

"Any unexplained fevers and headaches?"

"Uh, yeah. I guess," I respond cautiously. Recovery Girl seems to tick something off.

"Is the weight you lost intentional or unintentional?" She asks, still looking at the clipboard.

"What the hell? Do you think I'm trying to become skinny?" I say, horrified with her accusation. Once again, she ticks something off... I think.

"Any bumps forming on your neck, armpits or groin area?" She questions in a never-changing tone.

My eyes widen in surprise. "What the hell?! Have you been studying me during my sleep?!" I shout, very pissed off.

She looks up at me. "I unbuttoned your shirt and noticed a white lump forming on the lower part of your neck." I look down and notice my shirt is unbuttoned. "So I took the liberty of researching what it may mean and came across a certain disease. I also found a self-diagnosis paper quiz and decided to print it out and assess you."

"What do you mean, 'disease'? I've just got the flu!" I shout at her.

Recovery Girl ignores my question and asks me one, "Any excess bleeding or frequent infections?"

I rapidly blink my eyes to make sure I'm not going crazy. "Are you physic or something because you seem to be asking me all these questions that I'm going to say yes too. Except for the excess bleeding one."

"So you are getting infections quite regularly?" She asks, trying to get me to reassure her.

"I got a scrape on my knee from hero training and it went all red and pussy," I reply in uncertainty.

"Are you fatigued? Like is everything feeling extra heavy?" Recovery Girl asks, her voice now full of concern.

"Yeah..." I reply, sceptical of all the questions. "What are you testing me for?"

She looks up at me sadly. "Leukemia. You may have heard of it."

I am shocked. What does she mean Leukemia?! I don't have Leukemia! I have to become a hero! "What are you talking about?! I don't have Leukemia!" I shout in anger and shock.

"I'm not one to be able to answer that question. I'll send you back to the dorms for the rest of the day and inform your parents about my discovery," she informs.

"I can't take the rest of the day off! I won't be able to become a hero if I do!" I reply angrily.

"Bakugo, please calm down. I'm going to tell Mr. Aizawa that you won't be returning to class. Now go and rest," she persists and walks over to her computer and types some things down.

Deep down inside I know that I am very grateful for what she has told me to do. I am exhausted after all. "'Tch' fine," I mumble and get off the bed. I button my shirt back up and pull on my shoes. I grab my bag and leave the infirmary.
