What is a Myth?

What is a myth? Is it a story? An idea? A belief? Or is it that strange mix between the three that hides in the back of your head, itching, nagging, begging you to pay attention to it, to believe it. Is a myth true? Is it a lie? Or is it what you get with centuries of oral retellings, differentiating accounts, and confused witnesses? Are myths confined to culture or religion? Or have they steeped in the world for so long that they influence our every action? Are myths legends, or are legends myths? Were myths ever alive? Will they ever die? Will we ever know?
