Chapter One
Crazy Kids Tell Me I'm Not Crazy
"OH MY GOD!!"
"What!? What do you see?"
"You don't see it? It's right there!"
This is why people call me crazy. Because I see things. And, of course, nobody else sees them. Yep. I'm crazy.
Then one day a couple of crazy kids ran up to me and told me I'm not crazy. Ya, right. Let me start from the beginning.
My name is Delyla Tomson. I live will my dad, or a least I did. He was lovesick for months after Mum died. Most of that time he was out of work. We barely made it by. Now I'm 14 and even have a boyfriend, Andy.
Anyway, one day I was on a date with Andy. He had taken me out to a fancy restaurant. It had sliverly chandeliers; smooth, white, wooden table; and beautiful gray tablecloths. It warmed my heart to know he loved me enough to take me to such a wonderful place. I was completely and utterly awed.
We were at that fancy restaurant when it happened. We were eating dinner when my eyes widen. Right out the window, two giant misshapen faces were staring straight at me. And they had two eyes. No, I mean two eyes total. One each.
"Lyla...? What's wrong?" He looked in the direction of the window I was staring at.
"Uh. Oh, nothing. Nothing's wrong." He stared at me sternly. I stared back, but my eyes kept straying toward the the window. This one's new. Creepy. But new.
"Ugh. I can't take this anymore."
"Wh-what do you mean?" I stammered. Is he breaking up with me? God, I hope he's not breaking up with me.
"This. They were right. They were all right. You're flipping insane! I don't know why I bothered even giving you a chance." Oh God. He's breaking up with me.
"Y-you... you're dumping me?"
"No, I'm breaking up with you."
"What's the difference?"
"Well when you break up with someone, you do it kindly and respect their feelings. When you dump someone, you do rudely without giving a second thought."
"Well, since you explained it so vividly," I gave a little smile, "your dumping me." I forced my smile to fade into a deep frown.
"No I'm not!"
"Yeah, you are! In the middle of a date! How shallow is that!?"
"Excuse me," a waitress had walked up to us just as I was starting to get really fed up with Andy, "I'm going to have to ask you to leave. You're annoying quite a few of our costumers..."
"Oh, that's OK, we're done here anyway. Right Andy?" It really pained me to say his name. That's how mad I was.
"Right. We were just leaving. Goodbye, Delyla." Apparently it pained him to say my name, too. Good. He walked straight out of the door, but I stopped to glance at that window one more time. Gone. The faces were just... gone. I wondered if they were lurking around near the restaurant, but at that moment, I was to mad and annoyed to care. I stomped out, then stopped dead in my tracks.
"Well, well, well. A demigod equal in strength to everyone of the seven, living to the age of 14. Now how do you think that happened, Skull Crusher?
"Why, I don't know, Bone Snaper. But guess what? I don't think she'll live to see 15. Like that idea little demigod?
"Uh, I have no idea what you're talking about. I- I'm not a demigod. I don't even know what that is..."
"Aww, poor thing. It doesn't even know what it is? Can we teach before we kill it?" The one I assumed was known as Skull Crusher asked the other, um, thing.
"No, we cannot 'teach it before we kill it.'"
"You won't even have I chance to kill 'it' before I kill you, if you don't scram." The two 'things' got surprised expressions on their faces before stumbling over each other to get away. I turned around slowly. "Sorry were couldn't be here sooner. Somebody ran out of drachma and we got kicked out of our taxi before we could get here." Before me stood a girl and a boy. They both looked about 18 or 19. The girl, who had bright blond hair tied back in a ponytail, was glaring at the boy to her left. He had jet black hair and sea green eyes. They were both wearing orange t-shirts and jeans.
"Sorry. It's not my fault somebody forgot to tell me we would need more than 10 drachma." Now he was glaring at the girl.
"Percy! Where are our manners! We're argueing in front of a new demigod!" She stuck out her hand, "I'm Annabeth Chase! And you are..."
"I- I'm Delyla Tomson. Um... I, uh, what's happening?"
"I'm Percy Jackson, and we're here to take you to Camp Half-Blood, 'cause you're a demigod. Yay!" For some reason, the boy did jazz-hands with a big smile on his face. I just stared at him. "No? OK, fine be that way, nonbeliever..."
"Percy!" Annabeth elbowed him right in the rips. I just continued to stare thoughtlessly. "Uh, Percy... Oh Gods! Percy, call Blackjack, she's gunna-" I blacked out seeing Annabeth running towards me and Percy with his eyes closed, looking like he was concentrating really hard.
