Imagine
I rise up to my full height
And I feel her hand on my waist
It's a mix of temperatures, her nails different lengths
"Imagine," I whisper, "imagine this moment,
Store it in your memories for the rest of time
Store it for the good days, the bad,
Keep it in there and smile."
My shoes loosen, I see her smile
It's nothing but teeth and the skin around her lips
Her face like a shadow, mine like one too
A shadow of who I could be in this moment
"Imagine," she breathes, "imagine us happy
You and me for the rest of time, my girl.
There's no worries, no fears, just you and me."
"You and me." I repeat, but who's the "you?"
She laughs as her fingers brush my hair
Her laugh sounding automated, like static
Our location like a void, a bright room
It feels nice? Serene? I can't quite place it
"Imagine," I giggle, "imagine the two of us
When you're sad, imagine my face
My voice, my laugh, my presence."
She grabs my hands, traces my knuckles
And her face looks like she wants to kiss me
So I lean in, her arms floating to my body
And I feel like I'm kissing a ghost
"Imagine," she says, handing me some money.
"Imagine something nice, all for you. Take this bill.
Buy a ring, a pretty dress, that pair of earrings you've been eyeing."
The money was always mine
So there she stood, with her gifts, gifts that weren't quite there
She's like a half-finished puzzle I can't quite solve.
"Imagine," I think to myself, "imagine this moment
This kiss, her body, her touch, her smile,
Imagine her attributes, the thing's she'll bring
And maybe this moment will be real."
