When Sophie got home from school the knot of emotions under her ribs ached. She wanted to reach out to Fitz and find out what he was doing but at the same time if he was on a date with another girl, well she wasn't sure what she would do. She was barely eating her dinner and she failed to notice the looks Grady and Edaline were giving each other.
“Can I be excused to go to my room? I would like to start on some homework for next week.”
“Of course dear, would you like me to send up some dessert later? You barely touched your food.” Edaline asked softly. Sophie shook her head and just made her way up to her room.
“I'm worried about that girl, she just studies all the time. I thought this would be a good thing to keep her busy but maybe 2 levels in 1 year was a little ambitious.” Grady said as soon as Sophie was out of earshot. “I had even hoped after Alden hailed me last month to discuss her and Fitz she would perk up and it did for a while but he is on break right now and she looks more depressed than ever.”
“Oh my goodness, how could we be so dense, she just had midterms and I am guessing no one got her any presents!” Edaline exclaimed.
“You think that's it?” Grady questioned. “Well if that's the case conjure something up and let's go give it to her.”
“5th level is also when they can register for the match, maybe that is what has her upset?” Edaline said pensively. “Do you think that could be it?”
“How should I know? You were the teenage girl once! All I ever thought about was Bramble and how to not get teased about using my ability, and some cute girls occasionally. Well's just let her be, she has her date with Fitz tomorrow that should put her in a good mood. While she is gone we can go get her a midterm gift or something.”
When Sophie got to her room she pulled out her books but couldn't bring herself to study. She could only hold Mr. Snuggles, he still smelled like Fitz and it was infuriating and comforting at the same time. The only thing going through her mind was how things were going so well and then Magnete Leto had to tell her Fitz had plans that night. What would keep Fitz from telling her? She was so confused again as to what was happening. She decided to just go to bed and try and get some sleep when she heard the familiar voice in her head.
“Sophie, I didn't want to bother you but I can't wait for tomorrow. Can I come get you after lunch?"
“Sure I was just going to bed, I'll see you tomorrow.”
“Ok, Just dress normal but wear comfy shoes!I hope you get a good night's sleep.”
“Thanks, you too.”
As Sophie lay in bed that night she decided that she would need to trust Fitz, she knew he liked her and it didn't matter what his plans were tonight. She was going on a date with him tomorrow and if he told her about it great, if not it probably wasn't anything she needed to worry about. Trusting Fitz partnered with a sparkly red dragon made for a peaceful night's sleep.
Fitz was struggling to trust himself as he went back and forth between two gifts for Sophie for midterms. The first was a really nice sparkly purse that Biana said would be fabulous, the second was a hair clip that Della had picked out. It was beautiful and had red swirls of gems but neither felt like something Sophie would actually use. Fitz had wanted to get her a simple silver picture frame. Keefe asked why since she has a photographic memory she can relive any memory she wants why give her a picture frame, it just seemed redundant.
Needless to say Fitz was confused.
So he continued to walk around Atlantis, alone. Dinner with his family plus Keefe had been entertaining but he missed Sophie. He couldn't wait to tell her all about it the next day. As he passed by a store window he saw something that was perfect! It kind of went along with his date he had planned, tomorrow was going to be awesome
