Starter Lessons: Party of One
S1 E25 Everypony! Finale is up next!
....
Malibu was sleeping soundly in his bed at Sweet Apple Acres, having a dream where he and Dash were enjoying their best night ever at the Gala which was in only a couple more days now.
He suddenly heard a knocking on the door, making him groggily open his eyes, yawning. Walking down the stairs he spotted AJ going to answer. "Who's at the door?" Applejack shrugged. "Dunno."
When she opened it to their surprise it was Pinkie Pie dressed up in a silly looking party outfit having a cheery smile on her face. Malibu waved. "Hey, Pink. What's—?"
She suddenly began to sing.
"This is your singing telegram
I hope it finds you well
You're invited to a party
'Cause we think you're really swell
Gummy's turning one year old
So help us celebrate
The cake will be delicious
The festivities first-rate"
Both friends blinked slightly, for this had come out of nowhere. Pinkie's alligator was having a birthday? Pinkie Pie continued her singing, confetti suddenly shooting out from some kind of machine on her back.
"There will be games and dancing
Bob for apples, cut a rug [pop]
And when the party's over
We'll gather 'round for a group hug"
She eventually began to pant a bit, dancing slowly.
"No need to bring a gift
Being there will be enough
Birthdays mean having fun with friends
Not getting lots of stuff
It won't be the same without you
So we hope that you say yes
So, please, oh please R.S.V.P.
And come, and be our guest!"
Pinkie sweated a bit after finishing, giving the two invitation envelopes. Malibu took his with his magic. "Thanks for the invitations, Pinkie Pie," He thanked with a smile. Pinkie smiled weakly back. "Can't wait to see you there!" She bounded away in her bouncy fashion, Malibu shaking his head after her.
"Never heard of a singing telegram before," Malibu stated, AJ nodding in agreement as the two went to get ready for the party in the afternoon.
...
The party at Sugarcube corner so far had been fun for the Mane 7, party music playing through the room and Malibu himself was eating a piece of cake, seeing Dash and AJ above the bobbing for apples bucket. Applejack was able to get one and Dash smirked.
"Nice one! Now let me show you how it is really done!" Pinkie smiled when joining them. "Hey, girls!"
Rainbow Dash nodded. "Hey, Pinkie Pie!" Pinkie gave a happy squeal. "Just wanted to tell you how happy I am that you can make it to Gummy's party!"
Malibu held up his cake. "Good cake too as always Pinkie," He praised, making her blush. "Thank you, Mal."
"And we wouldn't have missed it for the world," Applejack stated. Dash nodded. "Me neither. When Pinkie Pie throws a party, I am there!" She put her head into the water, pulling out an apple. "Ta-da!"
Pinkie grinned. "Aw! Just a boring old apple. Don't worry. There are plenty of other surprises in there!" Rainbow spat out her apple. "What kind of surprises?" Even Malibu himself was interested, going to look. The party pony giggled. "I can't tell you that, sillies! Then it wouldn't be a surprise!"
Malibu wandered over to look inside with them, rather curious. AJ put her head in and pulled up some strange joke toy, pulling her back in because of the string toy, making her fall back in. Rainbow Dash nudged Malibu. "Why don't you try?" The alicorn flapped his wings. "Never bobbed for apples before," He said, gazing into the water. Swallowing, Malibu stuck his head in and suddenly yelped when feeling something attached to his face, pulling it out.
It was Gummy that somehow got into the bucket, causing Malibu to shake him off, rubbing his muzzle, ears fallen, the other two chuckling. "Not funny," Malibu snapped, going over to get something to drink.
He saw Rarity drinking from one of the punch bowls that had purple punch. "This punch is simply divine. Is this the same recipe you used for your 'Spring Has Sprung' party?" Pinkie shook her head. "Nope, something new!"
Rarity cringed when seeing Gummy sitting in the punch bowl that too made Malibu's stomach a bit nauseous. The white unicorn spat out her punch. Pinkie smiled. "It's Gummy's favorite!" She stated, making Rarity gulp, going for another drink.
Party music started up at that moment, distracting Pinkie Pie. "Ooh! This is my jam!" She ran to go and dance, Malibu seeing Rarity spitting out the punch she drank. He eventually went to join in dancing which Twilight and Fluttershy were doing.
"Having fun?" Pinkie Pie asked. Twilight smiled. "A blast!" Flutter agreed. "You always throw the best parties Pinkie Pie." She said softly. Malibu tapped his hooves in time to the music though not being a big dancer. "This has been fun— oof!" He grunted when Pinkie accidentally nudged him off his feet against a table, rubbing his head and his two other friends receiving the same thing.
Pinkie cheered. "C'mon, everypony! Gummy wants to dance!" The other 6 went up after Malibu recovered himself and the gang all danced around Gummy who only just twitched his tail. "Go Gummy! It's your birthday! Go, Gummy! It's your birthday!"
The party finally ended around 6:30 at night, Malibu feeling exhausted from how fun it was, even if it was for a small gator. Applejack looked tired too. "Hoo-wee! I am beat! I haven't danced that much since... well, since your last party. Thanks again for the invite!"
Malibu nodded towards Pinkie in the window while following Applejack. "I had fun too." He thanked, the others also thanking her. Pinkie spoke up. "You sure you don't wanna stay? There's still some cake left!" Twilight shook her head. "Uh, I think I'm gonna pass. Great party though. We should do this again soon!" She then winked at Malibu who felt confused.
"Is there something going on I should know?" Malibu asked in curiosity, stepping alongside his 'sister'. She giggled. "You should know that Pinkie Pie's birthday is tomorrow. And we will need all the help we can get to prepare for it. Also it is a surprise. She can't know." Twilight murmured out of earshot of Pinkie after she went back inside.
The young alicorn's ears perked in surprise but then he eventually agreed. A surprise party could be fun. "I won't tell her," Malibu said in an oath. Twilight nodded at him as the two went their separate ways, Malibu with Applejack. He got into bed, hoping the preparations for tomorrow will go smoothly.
...
In the afternoon Applejack had gotten up to get apples to make cider for the party and invited Malibu to come with her to pick them. Malibu helped with getting the apples off of the trees which was a cinch for him thanks to Celestia's magic lessons.
They finished their picking and were about to move them into the barn to make the cider when Pinkie Pie came out of nowhere, wearing a basket hat. "Whoa!" Malibu exclaimed, not prepared for such an entrance. "Howdy, Pinkie Pie. What brings you here around these parts?" Applejack asked with a grin.
Pinkie Pie shook her bottom in a dance move. "Who's ready to shake their hoof-thang?" She handed them their invitations. Malibu opened his up, reading it.
"It's an invitation to Gummy's after birthday party this afternoon! There's gonna be dancing, and games, and cake and ice cream, and punch!"
Malibu and Applejack glanced at one another in nervousness. "You see Pinkie... I... we..." Malibu stuttered. Applejack spoke up then.
"We don't think we can make it 'cause... uh... I have to... uh... uh, you know what? I... uh... pick apples!" Malibu nodded with his big smile, eyes darting nervously, knowing they can't tell Pinkie about the party. "Uh huh. Since that's an Apple thing. Also I'm helping."
Pinkie Pie raised her brow, glaring, while Applejack and Malibu both gulped from her seemingly suspicious face. Then her mood switched back to happy. "Okey Dokey Lokey! A party is still a party, even if there are only three guests!" She replied, wandering off to invite the next three.
The two friends sighed, Malibu having a hoof on his chest. "Close one," He chuckled in a nervous way, his orange friend nodding in agreement.
After pressing all the apples into cider Applejack then felt concerned. She was certain that Pinkie Pie would probably feel left out. "Hey, Mal? Maybe you can check on Pinkie, just to make sure she won't be losin' her trust in us over this whole thing? And maybe Twi can use her help to get the cake, too."
Malibu nodded. "Sure thing, AJ." He then ran out of the barn to find Pinkie and Twilight. She by now had tried asking Dash and Flutter if they would come but they both turned her down.
He found Twilight going into Sugarcube Corner, catching up with her. "Hey, Twi! Applejack said you need help getting the cake," He said softly. Twilight beckoned him in with her. They approached the stand, Mrs. Cake coming to meet them.
"Ooh! You must be here for...!" Malibu shook his head, sushing sharply. Mrs. Cake caught on and lowered her voice. "Is Pinkie Pie around?" Twilight asked. Mrs. Cake shook her own head. "Oh, I don't think so."
Twilight sighed. "Good. I don't wanna her to know anything about this!" Mrs. Cake winked. "Yes, of course. I'll be right back." The two of them were unaware of Pinkie listening in with a tin can. She came back with the cake that had a picture of Pinkie Pie on it saying Happy Birthday.
"There you go!" Mrs. Cake said cheerfully. Twilight smiled. "Thanks." Malibu also thanked her. "And remember, not a word to Pinkie Pie," He advised. Mrs. Cake agreed, until Twilight spotted the tin can above her, grabbing it. "Hey, what's with the tin can?"
Malibu turned seeing her pulling until it suddenly snapped off from the ceiling and smacked into her muzzle. She yelped aloud, the can popping off her muzzle and making it shaped like that. He let out a small snicker, having her glare. "Very funny," She said after Mrs. Cake wrapped up the birthday cake.
The two left the sweet shop, unaware that Pinkie Pie was following them nearby in disguise along with Gummy. He and Twilight handed the cake to Rarity in town. "She didn't see you in the sweet shop, did she?"
Malibu shook his head. "No." Twilight nodded. "Oh good. I'd hate for her to ruin everything." Twilight agreed. "Me too." Rarity then somehow put the cake into her tail, sneaking off with it. That was when Malibu saw Pinkie Pie following too. "Uh, gotta make sure Pinkie's ok. See you at the barn," He told Twilight. Twilight agreed and let him go.
He managed to sneak behind Pinkie Pie and hid; watching Rarity hand the cake to Fluttershy next. Nearby Malibu spotted Gummy poking his head out from a pile of hay that Pinkie was hiding in now, sneezing. "Have you seen her?" Fluttershy shook her head no. "Not since this morning," She stated.
Rarity sighed. "Me neither. Can you believe she was planning on throwing an after birthday party today?" Malibu flinched a bit. She could've sounded a tad nicer if Pinkie Pie was listening in. "I'm just glad I was able to come up with an excuse for why I couldn't be there," Fluttershy said. "Me too! This is obviously going to be so much better," Rarity confirmed. "As long as we keep her from finding out about it, it will," Fluttershy finished.
Malibu imagined himself in Pinkie's place, now seeing she would have her feelings hurt from these words. He would have a word with them after all this. Once they left Dash showed at that moment by the haystack.
"Hi, Pinkie Pie!" She halted in her tracks, frozen. "Uh oh!" Rainbow fled away, Pinkie showing herself finally. "Rainbow Dash, wait!" She shrieked. Malibu knew he had to return to the barn quickly to warn them.
He raced back, while Dash struggled to escape Pinkie Pie. Applejack looked up in surprise. "Mal? What's happenin'?" He panted shakily. "P-Pinkie..." Malibu gasped aloud, right as he heard Dash coming their way, zipping along the fields. "Applejack, we have a problem!" She shouted. Applejack gaped, jumping, guiding Malibu and Rainbow Dash into the barn, slamming the doors shut.
Malibu struggled to take steady breaths, a hoof over his heart, suddenly hearing Pinkie knocking on the door. "I KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE!" Applejack opened the top door, her and Malibu both showing with more nervous grins.
"Oh, howdy, partner!" The earth pony greeted. "Yeah, hi," Malibu said back. Pinkie Pie glared. "Mind if I... take a look inside the barn?"
Oh boy, Malibu thought to himself in worry while trying to block the view to the party inside. "No! Uh, I mean, yes, I mean... you can't come in here!" Applejack replied hastily.
The party pony swished her tail. "Rainbow Dash just went in there!" Malibu saw AJ attempting to block her view too. "Oh, well, she was just bringin' in some... supplies! Yup, supplies for the... renovation! Fixin' up the whole thing, top to bottom... uh, lots of construction goin' on in there right now."
Malibu heard his other friends from inside. "You heard her, construction!" And to his amusement they began to make sounds of construction tools, he and Applejack doing their best to keep Pinkie Pie out until Applejack closed the door, squashing her face and pulling herself out. He flinched. Not very subtle. "Yup! Construction. That's my story and I'm stickin' too it!"
Not being a good element of honesty right now, Malibu said in his head, Pinkie Pie giving them the stare down of the century, Applejack gulping.
"Okey... dokey... lokey..." Pinkie Pie finally said, though Malibu couldn't tell if she believed them or not. She gave them one more evil eye before finally leaving, him and everypony else sighing in relief.
Deep down the clone couldn't help but feel like he needed to make sure she was ok. He went back inside to help out with the party, glancing at Twilight. "You don't think Pinkie Pie would start to hate us because of this, do you?" He asked nervously. Rarity shook her head. "Oh, that's nonsense, Darling! It's Pinkie Pie! Once she sees this party I'm sure she'll forget the whole thing!"
....
In mid afternoon the party was finally ready and Malibu volunteered to go with Rainbow Dash to get Pinkie Pie to see her surprise. Malibu felt doubtful about Rarity's assurance of Pinkie Pie easily forgiving them for ignoring her but he prayed things would turn out fine.
Dash had noticed his nervousness and gave him a playful nudge. "Hey, chillax. Everything will be cool soon, and we'll have a good party!" Malibu smiled at her then nodded once they arrived at Sugarcube Corner. They peeked through the window at first and uncovered what could be most disturbing sight for Malibu:
He saw Pinkie Pie or what he thought was her. She looked rather gray and angry. Even her poofy mane was all flat and for some reason at the table she had a bag of flour, a bucket of turnips, a piece of lint and a pile of rocks all wearing party hats.
Malibu inched the window so they could listen in before going inside. And Pinkie... well... she sounded like she had gone off the deep end.
"I'm just glad none o' them ponies showed up. They're a bunch of losers!" The rock seemed to say but it was really Pinkie Pie. She flinched up looking psychotic for a couple seconds. "Oh, they're not so bad..." Once saying that, her eyes went crazy, smiling crazily too.
"Not so bad? Puh-lease! They're a buncha losers!" Pinkie voicing the rock exclaimed.
Pinkie Pie tilted her head. "Oh, c'mon now. 'Losers' might be a little strong, don't you think?"
Rainbow turned to Malibu, her eyebrows raised in confusion. "Uh..." She said softly. Malibu shrugged, his heart fluttering in worry for their pink friend.
The lint being nudged by Pinkie's hoof spoke up. "After the way they treated you? I say "losers" isn't strong enough."
Oh no... Malibu dreaded silently, now seeing Pinkie looking doubtful. "It was pretty rude..." She said. He nodded to Rainbow that they should go in and snap her out of it.
They knocked on the door, opening up, Rainbow Dash smiling. "Hey there, Pinkie Pie! Sorry I was in such a rush earlier. Had someplace to be and couldn't slow down and say 'hello'. You know how it goes."
Pinkie Pie gave them both death glares. "I know how it goes all right!" She snapped through her gritted teeth, causing Malibu's ears to fall. "J-just making sure you're ok," He tried to say. Pinkie snapped her tail in the air. "I'm perfect, happy. Can't you see how happy I am?!" The teal alicorn couldn't tell, and wondered why she looked so gray right now.
"Yeah... so, why don't you come with us to Sweet Apple Acres?" Rainbow Dash asked. Pinkie shook her head. "No thanks. I'm spending time with my real friends. Isn't that right, Madame le Flour?"
She then mimicked the bag of flour's voice. "Oui! Zat is correct, madame!" Malibu blinked a couple times, finding this very creepy to him. "Pinkie Pie?" Dash questioned in concern. "Another slice of cake, Sir Lintsalot?"
"I'd love one," her character replied while Gummy bounced by on a balloon. Malibu gave his marefriend a quick nudge, clearing his throat and tilting his head towards Pinkie. "Aaallrighty. What do you say we get on out of Creepytown and head over to Applejack's..."
Pinkie Pie pushed the bucket of turnips into her face. "She's not goin' anywhere!" Malibu frowned, knowing now this was going way too out of hand. She nodded. "I most certainly am not! I'm having a wonderful time right here!" Malibu stomped his hoof, eyes glowing. He had enough of this nonsense. "Just come with us, Pinkie Pie. You've gone off the deep end."
The pile of rocks was pushed into his face now. "You heard the lady! She ain't goin' nowheres, chump!" Malibu growled, glaring at the rocks. "Who do you think you're calling the chump?!" He snarled before feeling Dash tap him on the shoulder, making him blink.
What was I doing? I was talking to rocks...the gargoyle clone thought, flushing in embarrassment, backing up. Rainbow Dash flew to Pinkie Pie. "That's it, party's over! Come on, Pinkie Pie!"
She turned away. "No!"
Rainbow frowned. "Pinkie Pie, let's go!"
The party pony shook her head. "I said, NO!" Both her and Malibu tried nudging Pinkie to the door. "You... have to... come with... us!" Malibu huffed. "No... I... DON'T!" She sat down right on Rainbow Dash's head. She pulled herself out, falling backwards into the table, a slice of cake falling on her head.
Malibu could tell it made her mad. "Oh, you wanna do this the hard way? Let's do this the hard way! Malibu?" He nodded, igniting his red magic, lifting Pinkie Pie off the ground. She looked pissed. "Put me down! Put me down!" He ignored her when they went to Sweet Apple Acres.
Rainbow Dash looked exhausted from all that. "We're... here..." Malibu set down Pinkie Pie gently, opening the barn door. She still had a glare on her face, as the surprise was revealed.
The other four inside had cheerful smiles. "SURPRISE!" They all said, unveiling the party. Pinkie Pie was somewhat surprised but kept up her attitude, Dash pushing her in. She glared very hard at them all.
Fluttershy's ears lowered. "I really thought she'd be more excited." Malibu was thinking the same thing.
"Excited? EXCITED?! Why would I be excited to attend my own farewell party?!" Pinkie shrieked. Twilight was confused. "Farewell party?"
Pinkie went on her own rant then. "Yes! You don't like me anymore, so you decided to kick me out of the group and throw a great, big party to celebrate! A "Farewell to Pinkie Pie" party!" Malibu at that point felt pretty saddened for Pinkie into thinking she thought this way. Applejack walked up to her with sympathetic eyes. "Why in the world would you think we didn't like you anymore, Sugarcube?"
Here it comes... Malibu moaned silently, Pinkie looking deranged again. "Why? Why? WHY?! Because you've been lying to me and avoiding me all day, that's why!" Rainbow Dash laughed. "Uh, yeah! Because we wanted your party to be a surprise!"
Rarity smiled. "We'd been planning this party for such a long time, we had to make excuses for why we couldn't attend Gummy's party so that we could get everything ready for yours." She bumped a balloon her way. Malibu thought it looked rather cute how she did it.
Twilight agreed, inclining her head towards the cake she and Malibu bought. "If this is a farewell party, then why does the cake I picked up from Sugarcube Corner say 'Happy Birthday, Pinkie Pie'?" That was when Malibu realized right then; that Pinkie Pie had somehow forgotten her birthday was today. He watched her eye the party decor in reluctance until, in just two seconds, the color came back into her face, her mane got poofy, and she smiled big.
"Because it is my birthday! Ooh, how could I have forgotten my own birthday?" She gathered everypony into a hug, all of them sighing in relief that she didn't totally hate them now. Their friend zipped around the place. "And you like me so much that you decided to throw me a surprise party!"
Malibu smiled. "Yep. Hope you like it," He said. Rarity also beamed. "That's what we've been trying to tell you, darling!"
Pinkie Pie jumped up and down. "You all are the best friends ever!" She then lowered her head down. "How could I have ever doubted you...?" Twilight giggled. "It's ok, Pinkie Pie. It could've happened to any one of us. "Uhuh," Malibu agreed, nodding.
"I'm just glad I haven't been replaced by a bucket of turnips!" Dash then said. Twilight was confused rightfully so. "Huh?" Malibu winked at her. "Trust me, you don't want to know," He advised, making her giggle silently.
Applejack put on a record on her record player. "Alright, everypony, enough of this gab. Let's PARTY!"
They all cheered and enjoyed the festivities. Malibu's favorite by far was the cake, which he decreed was his favorite dessert, as well as danced with his best friends. To him this was good practice for the Gala tomorrow.
Twilight wrote a letter to his mom as well which went like this:
"Dear Princess Celestia,
We are writing to you from the most delightful party. We are not only having a great time with our friends, but also was given the opportunity to learn a valuable lesson about friendship. Always expect the best from your friends, and never assume the worst. Rest assured that a good friend always has your best interests at heart.
Your faithful student and loving son,
Twilight Sparkle and Malibu."
While dancing Pinkie Pie spoke. "You guys wouldn't mind if we celebrated Gummy's after birthday party too, would you? His party was cut short and he's pretty upset about it," She asked. Malibu wouldn't mind if it meant more cake, agreeing as he spotted Gummy chewing on a balloon with his toothless gums. "Yeah, why not? Let's have a party for Gummy!" Twilight giggled, all of them glad this drama was resolved.
Up next: Malibu finally attends the Grand Galloping Gala with his friends. but would it really be the Best Night Ever?
