11. rules & roommates

Yoongi wasn't a stranger to sharing rooms.

When he was growing up, his parents could barely afford a two bedroom apartment. When things got extremely bad, Yoongi and his family downsized to a one bedroom, then a studio once they moved across the country, where they all slept in the same place, before things turned around. It wasn't until his family's business had skyrocketed that Yoongi was finally able to have a room to himself. He knew the ups and downs of living crammed into a room, and he knew that it required giving up some of his liberties so that the roommate (or for Yoongi roommates as they were his siblings), could also be comfortable.

He'd always thought that all he needed was to be wealthy to have access to his room. He loved having his personal space and years living where he had none, he arguably cared for his room more than he cared for a lot of other things. With money, he could add anything to personalize his room, and at home, he even had his own bathroom. No more having to wait for his siblings and parents to finish showering. He could take his time in the shower, take his time as he washed his face, and do everything he couldn't do before he was in his struggle days.

This time, however, not even wealth could save him.

True to their words, Hoseok and Yoongi shared a room. Thankfully, they had separate beds— both queens so it wasn't like Yoongi was going to be in a twin bed. It would have been fine though. He'd lived life sometimes sleeping on the floor, or couch, and hadn't gotten a proper bed until his parents had gotten wealthy. Apparently not for Hoseok, who seemed to be annoyed that he couldn't have a king bed all to himself. Yoongi frowned, trying his best not to let the distaste wash across his face. Leave it to Hoseok to complain about the size of the bed. Already he could tell that they weren't going to get along.

He didn't even know Hoseok's room habits. What if he was incredibly messy? What if he didn't respect the space that they had? What if Yoongi woke up randomly at three am to hear Hoseok jerking off? Yoongi shuddered just thinking about it.

At the very least, Hoseok had managed to convince Jimin's parents to let him live with them, so if anything, Yoongi could always go vent to Jimin— or live in his room. He could sleep on the floor there. He didn't mind. To make matters worse, Hoseok and Yoongi had to share a bathroom. Hoseok, as Yoongi would come to find out, took his sweet, sweet time in the shower, and if Yoongi didn't wake up on time, Hoseok would take the shower and stay there for at least an hour, and that was on his faster days. What Hoseok did in the bathroom Yoongi had no idea. All he knew was that Hoseok was disrupting his schedule.

"If you're going to spend centuries in the shower, at least do it in the evenings."

Hoseok rolled his eyes in response. "There are other bathrooms in this place. Go to another one if you're that pressed. I need my time in the shower. It's the only way I can relax enough to deal with your bullshit all day. Besides, can't you take a shower in the evenings? I've been spending my time in detention as of late. Courtesy of you."

Yoongi and Hoseok had developed a feud, that was clear to the student body. Despite the student body knowing that they were dating— they were rarely seen together, except for the occasional time when Yoongi issued Hoseok detention, which was all the time. It made Hoseok a laughingstock, along with fear once Hoseok issued all of them dirty looks and glares. Hoseok couldn't even get his boyfriend to lay off the detentions for him, and Yoongi found that to be one of his greatest accomplishments.

Of course, Hoseok always tried getting back at Yoongi, which usually meant to embarrass him. Unfortunately, Hoseok had business expertise, so wherever Yoongi lacked, Hoseok excelled, and he was quick to use it to humiliate Yoongi. It was a never ending cycle— Yoongi humiliating Hoseok through school, and Hoseok humiliating Yoongi in real life. If they didn't know any better, this could be considered their way of flirting with each other, but fortunately, they made it abundantly clear that they hated each other.

After about a month of living together, Hoseok and Yoongi sat down to discuss their differences.

It hadn't been a choice. Both of their parents had caught wind of their constant bickering and fights, and Hoseok's parents had decided to hold an intervention. Clearly, their living together was not working the way they hoped, so Hoseok's parents proposed that Hoseok and Yoongi go on dates at least once a week. The proposal was immediately shut down, Hoseok stomping angrily away, while Yoongi just looked at them shocked. Despite this, the Jungs held their stance, and to ensure that they were going on dates as intended, they recruited the Kims.

"Sorry I can't make the date," Hoseok said, sighing exaggeratedly. "Yoongi gave me detention so I'll be staying after school and then I have school work."

Taehyung smiled sweetly. "Thankfully, we arranged the date for the weekend! Isn't it exciting?"

"We were thinking of starting slow," Namjoon added, complementing Taehyung's smile. "We're going to go to a restaurant. Once you two are warmed up, we can start with other plans, and eventually I was thinking of doing studying dates."

Yoongi wrinkled his nose in disgust. "Study dates? Kill me now. Hoseok's not getting any type of work done."

"Not with that attitude he won't," Taehyung answered cheerfully. "We hope that by the time that we got to those types of dates, you two will tolerate each other. The goal here isn't to get you to like each other romantically, it's to make sure that you two don't like you're going to kill each other every second of the day. It's bad for business."

The first date went as expected.

Horrible.

Hoseok and Yoongi had been forced to sit next to each other. Taehyung and Namjoon had taken them to a semi-fancy restaurant, and Hoseok was quick to judge Yoongi for not being able to properly use the silverware he was given. Namjoon had shaken his head in disappointment, and he gently began teaching Yoongi what utensil was more appropriate. Yoongi then purposefully spilled food on Hoseok's clothes, which sent Hoseok into a fit of anger because the clothes he'd worn were made of material that made it difficult for the stains to come out.

Hoseok had stormed off before the dessert had been brought in.

Believing that they weren't ready for a restaurant date, the Kims had tried doing a movie date. Nothing could go wrong with movies, they had argued, and it would be difficult for Yoongi and Hoseok to bicker when they had to be mindful of everyone else. What the Kims had failed to consider though, was that Yoongi and Hoseok would argue about the movie choice, the drinks they got (Yoongi, the classy man he was, got himself an ICEE, while Hoseok had settled for some soda), the characters in the movies, and they even managed to fight over the popcorn, with Yoongi getting mad that the popcorn tasted weird because Hoseok had insisted to put a ton of butter on it, to which Hosoek argued that it didn't have enough butter.

"This isn't working."

Namjoon snorted at Yoongi's words, and Taehyung looked as if he was trying his best not to burst into laughter. Hoseok shot a glare in both of their directions, then he turned his glare towards Yoongi, who appeared unfazed.

"If it helps, you two are successful in managing to fight over absolutely nothing," Taehyung said, keeping his face stoic. '"I have never seen a pair that hates each other as much as you two do."

"It's a rather impressive skill," Namjoon agreed. "Once you get over your differences, you two will be unstoppable."

"Mm, I don't know about that one," Taehyung answered. "I feel like they bring out the worst in each other."

"Thank you, Tae, for your incredible observation," Hoseok remarked, voice dripping in sarcasm. "I couldn't tell. It's not like Yoongi and I don't live together. Not like we sleep in the same room either."

"We need to figure out how to get to the bottom of this feud," Namjoon said, ignoring Hoseok's remarks. "Why do you two hate each other so much."

Yoongi didn't even need to think about it. He started listing every single little thing that annoyed him out of Hoseok— from how much of a spoiled brat he acted like, mean, insulting, bad character, everything he could possibly think of, and by the time he was done, Hoseok was beet red, glowering with eyes flaming in anger. In retaliation, Hoseok began listing everything about Yoongi— how Yoongi always tried to act like a goody two shoes, how Yoongi acted like he was better because he came from a poor background, and everything else he could find, down to the way Yoongi slept.

When they were done, Namjoon and Taehyung only looked at them stunned.

"Well, is there something you two like about each other?"

The answer was a resounding no.

"I see what the problem is," Namjoon announced. "You two have your ideas of each other, and that's blinding you from being able to connect."

"What are you talking about?" Hoseok asked, crossing his arms. "I only see Yoongi as the way he shows himself."

"Same," Yoongi piped, mirroring Hoseok's stance. "Maybe if Hoseok weren't such an asshole things would be different."

"Well, maybe if your panties weren't in a fucking twist then things would be different," Hoseok snapped.

Taehyung interrupted them before they could get any further. "This is exactly what Joon is talking about. Stop acting like little kids. You're grown." Taehyung sighed. "No more dates."

Yoongi and Hoseok grinned in satisfaction.

"What we'll do instead, is have you two say something nice about each other three times a day." Taehyung continued, wiping the grin off Hoseok and Yoongi's faces. "Once in the morning, once during lunch, and once during the evenings. No buts. Because you two don't want to try in your dates, we have to resort to these extreme measures."

Yoongi and Hosoek looked at each other, and just as quickly turned back to Namjoon and Taehyung.

"We'll do the dates."

Namjoon sighed even louder. "It clearly has not worked. We shouldn't try anymore. We have to get you two to be nice to each other, so for now that's what we'll do."

"What the hell would I compliment Yoongi for?" Hoseok asked incredulously.

"I have a lot of things you can compliment," Yoongi retorted. "You, however, have no redeemable qualities."

Namjoon clapped his hands. "It's settled. Compliments starting tomorrow. I will be watching you guys."

"We will," Taehyung corrected, smiling. "Think of this, as a rule, you have to follow! You wouldn't want to break rules, right? If you break them, you land in detention."

Yoongi loved rules. He believed it was a way to maintain control. It was one of the ways he was able to survive growing up. Rules are what kept his life from going downhill. Rules that were necessary were great for existing. He always tried to follow the rules, no matter how bizarre they could be.

"We'll see you tomorrow!"

This rule, however?

Yoongi would rather die than have to compliment Hoseok.

Detention it was.
