Locked In
I can't breathe. My parents are going to kill me. I'm sitting, curled up in one of the seats, trying to ground. Lawson gives up banging and sits on the floor, looking at his phone.
"The one time I wish I had reception," He looks at me and hurries beside me. "Are you having an anxiety attack?" I nod and he holds up his fingers. "Count with me, okay?" I shake my head, knowing he's trying to help.
"Counting fingers doesn't work with me," I try to take a deep breath. "I'm trying to use the fivefourthreetwoone method but our surroundings are part of the anxiety." He takes my hands instead and smiles gently at me.
"Try again. I need that brain of yours," I look around the room naming five things I see, (My bag, Lawson, Lawson's bag, curtains, Lawson's green eyes), four things I smell, (Strawberries, cigarettes, chocolate, mint), three things I hear, (Lawson's breathing, my breathing, creaking from my seat), two things I feel, (Lawson's hands, the seat), one thing I taste, (Pizza from lunch). It works this time and he grins at me. "Good. I know you know everywhere where you can get reception, where's the closest one?" I think hard and point backstage.
"If you go near the switchboard, you should get at least two bars," He hurries backstage and I look for my charger (Had I lent it to someone? Had someone borrowed it without asking? Everyone knows I carry it around) He comes back, looking annoyed. "No reception?" He shakes his head as he flops beside me.
"Worse, no data to get help...The night janitor's going to do rounds soon," He nods at my bag. "You have your charger?" I shake my head, frowning.
"I remember putting it in this morning but someone must've borrowed it," I set it down and put my head against the back of the chair. "Between this and the drinking, I think my punishment got worse than wearing my old glasses." He reaches out and pushes them up.
"I don't see how wearing your glasses is a punishment, they make you look cute," I give him a look and he starts to backpedal. "Not that you aren't already cute. They just make you even cuter." I elbow him with a grin.
"I think saying that the lead is cute is against your rules," His face goes completely red and I laugh. "I promise I'm just teasing," I poke him in the ribs before remembering that moment at the party when he leaned towards me. "Do you remember what you said about me having my first kiss before the play?" He nods and I smile at him gently. "I think you're right but I'm not sure how that would work." He frowns at me.
"Well, a kiss is when two people put their lips toegther in an attempt at romance," I give him a look and he grins, leaning back in his seat. "I guess I should warn you I'm cynical when it comes to romance. I had my heart broken by a certain cheerleader." I blink, knowing who he means.
"Rain? How did that happened?"
"We were fifteen and I foolishly thought I was in love with her. She asked me to send me a shirtless picture and it was put up around the school," He shrugs, gesturing at himself. "While my heart was broken, I did get a lot of numbers from interested girls and two interested guys. She was my first kiss and honestly, the reason I made the rule was because I was worried that River liked you and he'd hurt you the way his sister hurt me." Butterflies errupt in my stomach as I smile at him.
"Damn, James, you're sweet when you want to be." He gives me a smile that makes the butterflies dance.
"Actually, I think it might just be you, Wolfe," I put my head against the seat and he does the same. "Maybe we should...Play a game or something." I grin at him.
"Truth or dare?" He nods and I wait.
"Truth." I think hard before asking.
"Your parents?"
"They've been together twenty years but I think they're about to break up," I take his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze and he squeezes it back. "Truth or dare?"
"Truth." He looks disappointed with my answer.
"Did River ask you to the dance?" I watch his face for a long time before answering.
"Yes but I said no because of Rain and Holden," He looks so relieved and I move a bit of hair that's in his eye. "Truth or dare?" He gives me a smile.
"Dare." I lick my lips.
"I dare you to show me the most embarrassing photo on your phone." He sighs and pulls out his phone.
"Please remember our idea of embarrassing is very different," I nod unconvincingly and he hands me his phone. I look at a picture of a small Lawson dressed up as Charlie Chaplin and go 'aww'. "Yeah, yeah. Truth or dare." I hand over the phone, the air feeling dangerous.
"Dare." He gives a bashful smile as pockets his phone.
"Let me be your first kiss," He leans forward and I lean forward too. He stops, our lips a breath apart. "Are you just doing this because of the dare?" I shake my head and he takes off my glasses before kissing me. His lips are soft. I kiss back, hands sliding into his hair slowly and he cups my face until there's a loud crack. We pull away and I take my glasses from him, happy to see that they're not more broken. "So...How did you like your first kiss?" I put the glasses back on and smile at him, heat in my cheeks.
"Pretty good. So, why did you dare me to do that?"
"Would you have let me?" I shrug and he shrugs. "I thought better safe than sorry since I've wanted to do that for a while. I hate to address the elephant in the room but...That rule still applies to us and that was the best kiss I've had." I nod, looking at him.
"Maybe, after the play, if we still want to kiss, we could give us a try?" He nods and looks at the stage, a smirk growing on his face. "What?" He offers me his hand.
"I was thinking of including a dance in the kiss scene and I think, as someone who had years of training, you'd be a big help," I take his hand and follow him up onto the stage. "If I wanted Azrael and Cas to dance close together, what sort of move should they do?" I smile and put his hand on my waist before draping my arm around his neck.
"Take my hand and hold it against your chest," He takes my hand and puts it against his chest. "And now just sway," He sways and we start to move in a circle. "It's nice and simple and is less weird with music. You can also get Azrael to dip Cas for a kiss." Lawson dips me back and brings his face close to mine.
"Like this?" He asks, his voice husky and I nod.
"Exactly like this," He sets me up right and I smile. "Can I borrow your phone? I may have an idea," He gives me his phone and I go to the switchboard as a familiar number calls. I wave Lawson over as I answer. "Uncle Freddy?" I hear multiple 'Thank God's in the background as Uncle Freddy sighs.
"Dion, where are you and Lawson?" Lawson takes the phone from me and puts it on speaker.
"Someone locked us in the auditorium and no one can let us out," Lawson explains and I hear my parents talking while picking up keys. "Please tell us you can get us out." Someone takes the phone from Uncle Freddy.
"We're calling the night janitor," Dad says, opening a door and I can hear dogs which means he's outside. "We'll be there in a couple of minutes to pick you up. Do you need a ride, Lawson?" Lawson looks at me before answering.
"No, my car's in the parking lot but thank you," Lawson looks at his battery before wincing. "Mr Wolfe, my phone's about to die and I need to hang up. We'll see you soon," Dad grunts in reply before Lawson hangs up. "Thank God. How long does it take to get from your house to here?" I check the time on his phone before wincing.
"We've got forty minutes because of rush hour but if they're calling the night janitor, we'll be out soon enough," He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a carton cigarettes. "Where exactly are you planning to smoke?" He points to a small window.
"I'm getting a little antsy, I just need one," He opens the window and lights the cigarette, making sure I'm nowhere near him before taking a drag. "So, if you aren't going to the dance with River, who are you going with?" I shrug, sitting on a platform.
"Holden's making me go but I was thinking about just going by myself," He nods thoughtfully, taking a drag. "What about you? You going?" He shakes his head, blowing smoke out the window.
"The dance is the same night as my sisters' birthday and my parents are going to try to stop fighting for one night," He looks at his phone, his eyes looking watery. "They've probably fighting this entire time, not realising I wasn't even there," Before I can say anything, the doors open and he throws his cigarette out the window. "Thank God." We hurry off stage and the night janitor smiles at us.
"Mr Wolfe called and told me what happened," I get my stuff and smile at him. "I was leaving when I got the call, you two would've been locked in here all night," Lawson gets his stuff and the night janitor frowns at us for a second. "Wait, are you in the play?" We nod and he nods, smiling. "So is my niece, Lavender. She's the reason I was leaving early, weird." I nod and we walk past him to go home.
"Thank you for coming back and letting us out," I say, something in the back of my mind trying to get my attention. "Have a good night," He waves at us and we walk out of the building. "I'm beginning to think I'm cursed. Between this, the video, Bri, the party and Scott coming here, my luck's pretty much non-existent." Lawson frowns, playing with a ring on his finger.
"Maybe it's not bad luck," His phone rings and he seems to lose all tension when he answers. "Hey Harper, you and Leigh being good?" Slowly, his tension builds back up. "Is there anything you can make yourself?" He pinches his nose before remembering I'm here and starts to smile. "I have an idea, I just need to check something, one second," He smiles at me. "Would your parents be okay with taking in three children for dinner while their parents save people's lives?" I nod, knowing they'd be okay with it. "Okay, my friend's parents should be able to let us over for dinner but next time, ask them for money to get pizza or something. I'll see you soon." I wait two minutes before giving up.
"Okay, are your sisters called Harper and Leigh?" He nods and my parents' car pulls up. "I will get details later, I'll double check with them, okay?" I walk over to the car and smile at them. "Hi. Is it okay if Lawson and his sisters come over for dinner? Their parents are at work and there's nothing for them to make for dinner." Mom looks over at Lawson who waves awkwardly.
"Dinner's at seven!" She calls and Lawson gives her a thumbs up before swaggering towards his car. "He's handsome, Dion. Are you sure you're just friends?" I see Lawson glance over, hiding a smirk and I get into the back.
"Can we just go home, please? I need to borrow Holden's charger," Dad frowns at me in the mirror. "I think one of the drama people borrowed it and forgot to give it back," I wave at Lawson as we drive past. "Thanks for letting Lawson and his sisters come to dinner." Mom turns to smile at me.
"Well, he'll be able to meet your new brother and sister," I blink, a smile growing on my face. "Freddy's looking after them. Do you want to hear their names?" I nod and Dad grins.
"Austen and Sawyer," Sometimes I wonder if my parents realise that as cool as the names are (Which they are if you know literature), they keep giving girls names that can be seen as boy names. "Pretty cool, huh?" I nod, smiling and we pull up to our house. My smile fades at the sight of two policemen at the front door and them pointing at me.
