4|The Guardians
So we set off for Earth.
But, not before Santa went to his office to sound The Alarm.
The Alarm entailed that all parents around the world received a message in some kind of way whether it be their phone or a freakin' carrier pigeon, that there was an emergency and Santa needed them to go into hiding.
That's right. The parents are in on it. From L.A. to Tokyo.
After he sounded The Alarm we loaded up the sleigh and prepped the reindeer.
I was feeding Dasher while sneaking glances at the rest of the team. They were loading up that giant nap sack that was supposed to hold presents, with weapons instead. Ornament weapons to be exact.
Then a lightbulb appeared above my head.
Dasher bit my finger mistaking it for a carrot and I yelped in pain, dropping the rest of the carrots.
"Ouch! You horse wanna be!"
He ducked down to eat the dropped carrots and I stuck my tongue out at him.
I shook my hand trying to relieve the pain while beginning my walk back to the factory.
"I'll be right back!" I told everyone.
"Where are you off too?" Addy asked.
"Back to the factory!"
"For what?" asked Josh.
Askin' all dem questions...
"I'll show you when I bring it back!"
I hurried back to the weapons room and searched and searched until I found what I was looking for.
I ran back to the others as fast as my feet would take me. Addy and Felix were feeding the reindeer while Santa, Carlos, and Josh were at the sleigh.
I ran over to the reindeer and stood near Felix.
"Okay...so...this...is your weapon." I held up the large white star so he could take it.
He hesitantly took it from me."Don't th-these go on t-t-top of Christmas trees."
"Yeah, but this one's uber special."
"No lo creo," Carlos said in awe. I jumped a little.
When the fuck did he get over here?!
His hand slowly reached for the star as if in a trance. Until I broke said trance by slapping his hand away.
"No touchy." I tutted my finger at him.
"Whatever you say, Kuzco."
"Niya, you know that's not finished," came Josh's voice.
"Dude! People wanna sneak up like they glide on air and shit!" I looked back and forth between Carlos and Josh. "Make some noise da next time you walk or get yo ass punched!"
"Language, Niya!"
I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
"Close enough. He can still use it."
Addy slid over next to us."Is that what I think it is?" She looked between all of us before her eyes settled on the star.
"Yep. And Felix's gonna use it." I smiled proudly.
"No, he's not."
"And why not Josh?" I demanded.
"It's not done you idiot," he hissed.
Hold the hell up.
Everyone looked at him, surprised by his sudden outburst.
I narrowed my eyes and crossed my arms over my chest.
"I don't know who the fuck you're talking to, but it ain't me." My voice came out eerily calm and strong.
He bent down to get in my face and Carlos placed a hand on his chest to hold him back.
"I am sick and tired of your mouth-"
"Maybe I just wanna protect a friend before we go into a-"
"What if that thing malfunctions while we're in the middle of battle, huh?" he fumed. "You never think of the what ifs."
He laughed humorlessly and shoved Carlos' hand off him. "But I guess that's your problem." He scowled at me."You don't think."
Before I could stop myself I punched him in the nose.
He reared back and fell to the floor while I glared at him.
"Oh my God!" Addy gasped and bent down to try and catch his fall.
"Children!"
Santa finally came over to us to see what the problem was."Wha-"
I cut him off and bent down in front of Josh."I guess you don't have to make noise to get yo ass punched." I tilted my head."You should get cleaned up and probably re-break your nose."
I stood back up and smiled down at him."I hope it hurts." My smile dropped and I waltzed over to the sleigh and got in to check our bags.
I didn't look back to see how they handled me punching Josh. All I saw was Rosko curled up on the seat of the sleigh with his leg bandaged up.
I sat down in front of him and rubbed his head.
"Hey, buddy." I said softly."How ya doin' ?"
His head popped up and nuzzled into my hand.
"Your leg'll get better," I promised.
He licked my hand and curled back up.
"Come here, Niya."
Here we go.
I stood up and jumped out the sleigh.
Everyone stood around Santa and I saw Josh holding a bloodied rag up to his nose.
Santa had his arms crossed and pointedly looked at Josh.
"Josh, do you have something you want to say to Niya?"
Both our eyes locked in a heated stare.
He dropped the rag from his nose and his voice came out nasally."I'm sorry for calling you an idiot."
Santa looked at me."And Niya, do you have something you want to say to Josh?"
"Your shoes are untied."
Addy and Carlos snickered and Santa glared at them then turned his gaze to me."Niya."
What do I have to apologize for?!
Speakin' my mind.
Having a strong opinion.
Maybe he ate my pie and the guilt was eatin' at him.
I sighed."I'm sorry for contradicting everything you say."
We stared at each other for a long second before we both said,"Apology accepted."
"Good. Now that that's settled. We need everyone to work together more than ever." We stood in a semi-circle to heed his words."We are a family-"
"Can we skip the Kumbaya shit and go," I said tiredly.
"Behave. All of you. I don't want any more fighting."
"Yes, Santa." We said simultaneously.
"Good. Finish getting ready."
Before we dispersed I tapped him on his shoulder.
"Do you think...you could...use some of your ju-ju magic on Rosko?"
He stared at me.
"You know...for his leg...and Josh, too."
"Oh yeah. Of course, Niya. My mind isn't where it needs to be at the moment. Once I get my kids back my mind will be at ease." He smiled down at me and patted my head.
"Josh, come here son." He motioned Josh over with two fingers and Josh came over with the rag still up to his nose.
"Remove the rag and stay very still."
Josh dropped his arm and sniffed.
Santa held up a finger and a glittery light appeared at the top. It shot out at Josh's nose and all you could hear was a loud crack and Josh cry out in pain.
When the light died out, the blood was gone and his nose was straight again.
"Thanks," he muttered.
He turned to me next and pointed at my cheek."You want me to heal that, too?"
"Oh, no. It's fine," I waved at my cheek for emphasis,"I think it's already scabbed over."
"Behave," he reiterated and looked sternly at the both of us.
"Yes, sir." We both said.
He went to go heal Rosko and all you could hear were cheerful barks afterward.
We worked in silence after the whole ordeal and finished loading the sleigh, prepping our weapons, and the reindeer.
The portal was open ready for our departure to Earth.
I sat up front with Santa and Adelaide while the rest of the guys sat in the back.
Santa held the reigns and before he could motion the reindeer to go he told us,"We'll start up north and work across the U.S."
He flicked the reins and we were off.
It wasn't just the U.S. that had lights flickering out. It was the entire world.
Australia, Asia, Canada, Africa. Hell, all the continents. It would've taken us forever to help the entire world, which is why we got the parents in on it.
The sleigh made it to its destination in a matter of seconds. Going through the portal was like going through another dimension altogether. Different colors swirled and danced around you. Tiny ripples of space zoomed past you and sparkles twinkled like stars.
Too bad it all lasted but two seconds.
We landed on a barren empty street, surrounded by hulking tall buildings and parked cars.
The street lights were on and the ground was covered in a thin layer of ice with the threat of snow falling.
This place looked oddly familiar.
"Are we back in New York?"
Santa hopped out the sleigh and said,"Yes, we are."
We followed suit and before I jumped out I put Rosko in my book bag. His little head was sticking out the flap with his tongue hanging out.
He barked once and I put the book bag on and hopped out. It was cold, really cold. In that moment I wish I'd've brought a bigger jacket.
"It's so quiet." Addy rubbed her hands together to keep warm.
"Everyone check your comms," Josh instructed.
We gave him confirmation they were working and began walking around.
It was strange not seeing people walking around, even if it was night time.
Our footsteps echoed on the streets. That's how quiet it was.
"I think we'll cover more ground if we split up." Josh made his way back to the sleigh and started unhooking the reindeer.
"Don't when they say that in movies people always die, amigo?"
"Let's not think about impending death, yeah?"
"Good idea, Josh." We all started walking back to the sleigh to receive instructions.
"Carlos and Adelaide will go south. Niya and Josh, you'll go east." They stared to see if I'd react.
I didn't.
"Felix and I'll stay here."
"Let's each take one separately, yeah?"
I silently thanked Addy in my head.
"Yeah, let's move." Josh hopped on Comet and got comfortable.
I got on Vixen, Addy on Prancer, and Carlos on Dasher.
"You better hope he don't bite you," I told Carlos.
"If he does I'll just bite back, chica."
Santa stood by us and told Felix to stay and guard the sleigh.
"You all be careful and stay on guard," he insisted.
We nodded and then we were off.
I followed Josh and Carlos and Addy went the opposite direction.
The city looked beautiful from the sky above the clouds. Lights shone brightly and...that was about it. New York was a bright ass city.
"We'll land down there!"
Josh pointed at a brightly lit clearing that turned into Times Square the closer we got.
Vixen touched down nice and quietly while Comet had to slide to a stop.
He was the fastest after all.
We hopped off and pulled out a baggie of carrots from my pocket to feed Vixen with.
Commercials ran across screens, billboards were lit up, and not a soul was in sight.
She was still nibbling on the carrots when Josh brought over Comet to feed him as well.
"Well. We'll stay here until they come out." His hand was being nuzzled at for carrots from Comet.
"Alright."
The only sounds that could be heard were Comet and Vixen crunching on carrots.
"Look, Niya..."
"It's fine," I mumbled.
"No it's-"
"Just drop it Josh."
He sighed and stilled.
"What?"
"Did you hear that?"
"I hear the sound of carrots being dismembered-"
"No. That click."
They're here.
I looked up searching for tiny bodies. All the bright lights were making it harder to see and I had to squint.
These glasses ain't worth shit.
"Do you see any?" I asked, whipping my head from building to building.
Rosko started barking behind me; I turned and my gaze landed on a street. A street with bobbing green and white bodies.
"There!" I pointed at the street and Josh came up by my side.
We heard clicking behind us and turned to see some more getting ready to jump off a building.
There's a lot more here than there was in the park.
Like...hundreds more.
They jumped.
And we charged.
《<•○●○•>》
"Do you think they've ripped each others heads off yet?"
Addy and Carlos landed in a park and were feeding their reindeer.
Addy punched his arm and turned her attention back to Prancer.
"Ouch, woman!"
"Don't say that you twat," she huffed.
"I'm telling Santa," Carlos pouted and rubbed the arm that he was using to feed Dasher.
"Oh puh-lease. It wasn't as hard as Niya's fist greeting Josh's face," she said smugly with a grin.
"Chica got a mean swing."
Addy sighed wistfully."I wonder if he'll ever tell her how he feels."
"Fat chance of that happening."
"He needs to stop being an arse and man up."
"Hold up," he spoke,"Guys have feelings too. We don't want to be rejected by our opposite sex. It's a blow to our ego."
"Well-" She stopped and stilled.
"Did you-"
"I heard it, too."
Addy was already taking off her lasso as Carlos pulled out his gun.
They gazed around the park in search of the Dark Elves.
Trees and shrubs started shaking and they moved toward the middle of the park standing back to back leaving the reindeer.
Tiny bodies emerged from the greenery. Their sharp teeth showcased in a grin. Their raggedy clothing shown in the street lamps.
"Get ready, Lemonade."
She was too focused to comment on the nickname. Her lasso was held in an iron grip in her hands.
The clicking started and their tiny legs charged at them.
Carlos raised his gun.
Addy raised her lasso.
All hell broke loose.
《<•○●○•>》
Santa and Felix were already in the midst of battle with the D.E.'s arriving not long after everyone left.
Santa sliced every one that came his way. Leaving a mess of cotton and blood.
Felix stood in the sleigh kicking any D.E. that tried to get into the sleigh.
When a large group neared him he grabbed a red ornament, pulled the top off and threw it.
He hit them square on each time using perfect aim and they would explode in a bloody glittery mess.
Even the reindeer joined in. Kicking, bucking, and stomping elves into the ground.
More and more came out of alleys and jumped off buildings. It was becoming a bit overwhelming.
They swarmed Santa at some point and he couldn't get them off.
"Santa!" came Felix's worried yell. He didn't want to leave the sleigh unguarded, but he wanted to go help Santa too.
He was rifling through the sack for an ornament when Santa yell out,"Stay there!"
He was struggling to get the D.E.'s off as more jumped on him. His swords knocking off a few, but not enough.
When all seemed helpless, Rudolph zoomed to Santa's aid.
In attack mode, Rudolph stood huffing and grinding his teeth until a red beam of light emitted from his nose.
The laser went through each elf like butter. With Santa turning, the more elves got hit with the laser.
Soon they were all gone and Santa came out unscathed.
"Watch out!"
Felix threw a silver ornament in the air and it landed in the middle of the road where a bright light blinded every and anything in its vicinity.
《<•○●○•>》
I didn't want to waste any of my knives yet so I unholstered my Glock 19's(9mm) and shot as many as I could.
Peppermint bullets whizzed through the air as I pulled the triggers in quick succession.
I ran out quicker than expected and quickly put one back in its holster to yank off an ornament to buy me some time.
I yanked the top off with my teeth and threw it at the hoard of D.E.'s heading my way.
I put more mags in my guns before the ornament hit the ground.
I turned my attention to the buildings and shot a couple of elves out of the air. From behind me the explosion sounded and I ducked and turned back around toward it. As the glitter dispersed more and more D.E.'s appeared behind the smoke.
Don't panic. Don't panic.
I put my guns up and snatched off more ornaments to throw.
The reindeer were at work stomping elves under their hooves. They made it look like they were stomping balloons with paint in them.
Coooooool.
Josh had his candy cane spear twisting, flipping, and turning in his expert hands impaling D.E.'s left and right.
The more elves that came his way the faster he moved.
He was literally shish kabobing elves like he was ready to grill them.
The ground was becoming a tad bit slippery. The ground was covered in glitter, blood, and cotton. The thin layer of ice wasn't helping either.
I wound up ready to throw an ornament went I slipped and fell on my ass really hard. The ornament didn't go far. It only flew about five feet away from me and before I knew it, the force of the explosion blew me back into the air.
I hit something lumpy and hard and rolled onto my side.
I probably killed Rosko!!!!
"Rosko," I groaned. He barked and a wave of relief washed through me.
I heard a groan beside me and saw it was Josh. He rubbed his face and peeked up at me.
"Oh my God, are you okay?!" He hands flew to me to look for any damage.
I swatted him away and said."Fine. I'm fine."
He removed his hands and his gaze veered to something behind me. I was already reaching in my book bag for another gun, the same time Josh was reaching for his spear.
Out from behind me, I pulled out my double barrel shotgun and turned my body to see an army of D.E.'s flying at us like monkeys. With my arm out and finger on the trigger I pulled.
It wasn't just two bullets that flew out, no. The barrels were full of quarter shaped candy cane bullets that sliced through the D.E.'s so fast they flew back from the force of it.
"We gotta get out of here! There's too many!" Josh yelled to me.
I quickly nodded and got to my feet heading for our reindeer, hitting a few elves in the process.
Josh followed suit throwing knives aiming for their heads.
《<•○●○•>》
Carlos swapped out his handgun for a pair of Ak's and gradually turned in a circle, taking out any D.E. that met his bullet.
Addy lassoed a group of elves and squeezed her lights until it tightened around them.
She pressed the end of her lasso and electrocuted the D.E.'s in a mass of flickering red and green Christmas lights.
All that was left was a very large puddle of warm blood and cotton.
She transformed her lasso into a whip and all you could hear was the loud crack of her whip burning into its suspecting victims.
Dasher used his antlers to impale any D.E. that came his way and some ended up stuck.
Prancer squashed as many as he could with his hooves and bucked some into the air.
Addy grabbed an ornament off her side and threw it at a group of elves. They flew every which way in an explosion of green glitter.
More elves came from out of the trees and headed there way.
Carlos was steady shooting and Addy whipped as many as she could, until it was becoming too much.
Their comms buzzed to life and Josh's voice came through.
"Head back to Santa. He already knows we're coming."
"You don't have to tell us twice!" Addy and Carlos ran to their reindeer and hopped on.
When they were in the air, Carlos took out the stuck elves out of Dasher's antlers and dropped them. He had his remaining bullets rain down on the elves below.
"What are they doing?!"Addy yelled.
"I think they're following us!" He shouted back.
《<•○●○•>》
Four reindeer touched down near the sleigh as a mass of D.E.'s closed in on them.
"Quick get on the sleigh!" Santa instructed.
We hopped off our reindeer and migrated toward the sleigh.
Santa quickly passed each of us an ornament. He had a globe in his hand and an ornament. Only this globe looked different.
"We throw them on three!"
We kicked a few elves off the sleigh and Santa began his count down.
"One...two...three!"
We threw them and the hoard of elves surrounding us blew to pieces as glitter flew everywhere.
Then Santa threw down the globe and a forcefield surrounded us. Preventing any D.E. from reaching the sleigh.
They climbed the invisible field to no avail. It was like being in a giant snow globe. The ground inside the field was covered in snow and the reindeer lifted their legs in and out of it.
Rosko started barking behind me and I took off the book bag and sat it on the seat to lift up the flap.
His tongue was out panting. I grabbed a water bottle off the side, twisted off the cap and gave him some water. He lapped at it eagerly.
"This is too much for us to handle." Santa decided.
We were all sniffing and cold and covered in blood and pieces of cotton....
I wonder what the rest of the world looks like?
"We need to call the guardians."
Now I'm excited.
"Josh. Hit the button."
Josh turned to the front of the sleigh and lifted a latch that was covering a black button. He pressed it and...nothing happened.
The only thing I could hear was the insistent pounding on the force field.
Then it happened. The field disintegrated and the D.E.'s charged.
Before they could reach us, the ground beneath them froze and their feet froze along with it. The ice slowly climbed up their bodies until they were completely frozen. That went on for miles.
Then holes started popping up and D.E.'s fell through and disappeared, never to be seen again.
All we could do was stare in awe as our problems were handled without so much as a struggle.
"I think you've lost your touch, mate."
We turned toward the voice behind us to see a large bunny standing on his hind legs, and man sitting crisscross on a cloud of golden sand, a pale boy with a stick, and a pink eyed hummingbird fairy surrounded by her mini-fairies.
Santa let out a hearty laugh and went to go greet his friends.
We followed suit behind him.
"Thank you for coming my friends." He patted Bunnymund's shoulder and admired the rest of his friends.
"We're happy to help," came Toothiana's chiry voice.
A couple of her fairies flew around us curiously and everyone's attention turned to us.
Santa held out his hand gesturing to our little group."These are my elves Josh, Niya, Adelaide, Carlos, and Felix."
Rosko barked and I turned to the side so he could stick his head out to make himself known.
"And Rosko." He barked again and Tooth zoomed toward me.
"What a cute wolf!" She gushed and took him out of my bookbag.
She snuggled him up to her hugging him with a content smile on her face.
"Aren't you the one's that upset that biker gang and stole an eighteen wheeler?" Jack Frost had his eyes narrowed in amusement while we laughed nervously, peeking at Santa from time to time.
Josh rubbed the back of his neck and muttered sheepishly,"Yeah, that was us."
"Are you kidding?! That was amazing!" He whooped and swung around on his staff.
He got glares from Santa and Bunny while the Sandman was silently laughing on his cloud.
Frost abruptly stopped laughing oblivious as to why they were glaring at him."What?" He shrugged.
Bunny rolled his eyes and eyed Santa."I rekon you called us here for a reason. So what's the emergency?"
Santa briefed them on what happened and who's behind everything. By the time he finished we heard more clicking heading our way.
We refilled our guns grabbed more ornaments and stood in position.
"Where did you get weapons?!" Tooth asked hysterically.
"We-we-we-" I was stuttering!?
"Alright you lot, get ready!"
We were surrounded every which way with no escape. They were everywhere. On top of buildings, in the alleys, climbing out the sewers.
It was like we were all on the same page, because we all jumped to attack at the same time.
The entire block was in utter chaos.
There was glitter, sand, ice, bullet shells, I mean the list went on and on.
Suddenly a flash of blue and white light blinded us and everything ceased.
The light disappeared and left a green sleigh pulled by giant emperor penguins.
Out of the sleigh stepped a sickly green man with crooked yellow teeth. I could imagine Tooth's face turning into one of pure terror at the sight. Behind him stepped a dull pale gray man in a long black robe. He had silver-golden eyes that pierced straight through your soul and shadows running down his arms, almost obscuring his body in darkness.
Close behind him stood a man in blue and white robes. His old skin was the as white as snow, the same as his oddly long beard.
The next one that stepped out wa a surprise. He was tall and lithe in stature. His long arms dangled by his sides as he stood at an alarming height of close to eight feet. His pale face held no facial features. His eyes and mouth being hollowed out.
Last but not least, an old man hopped out, hunched over in red footie pajamas. His red beady eyes took us all in. He rubbed his gray beard in thought and slung the candy cane shotgun on to his shoulder and locked eyes with his brother.
"You're coming to my world brother."
Then everything went dark.
