Chapter 16

The night before Christmas Eve discoveries were made.

Maleek did not want to play caregiver. He needed to take his older brother by the lapels and pulled him out of his slough of guilt.

He had stood there for a minute indecisive until his uncle squeezed his shoulder in assurance and followed his brother inside Sheldon's office. With a sigh, he turned and followed the young woman. He rushed to catch up to her.

If only there was something that could bring Sheldon from the past and restore him and fixed the pieces of his broken heart and make him whole again. His mind was caught up in the past as he moved to follow the young woman but he stopped in his tracks when he saw a figure emerged from near the huge angel statue.

He was about to call out a warning and alert the figure as his protective instinct set in but he paused with the words dying on his lips. He watched her take something from around her neck and toss it at the figure.

His jaw fell open as he felt the atmosphere around him shifted. He watched as she said something to him then stared in awe as the green light from what she threw at the figure radiated them both showing the most majestic being he had ever seen.

In what could only be described as a scene from a movie, The Shady figure without so much as moving caused the chained stone that was thrown at him to pause in mid-air basking Alexa it's mystic glow before it slowly came to find its place around her neck.

Maleek could only stand and stare as his mind was blown with the most glorious of discoveries. He knew it! He knew it all along. This was the reality of the possibility he had on many occasions wished to be real. How glorious he was.

He rushed up to Alexa and took her by the hand and started to sprint back with her back to the cafe unaware of her fright at having him grab her, he was too filled with the glorious delight of having discovered that Mistle indeed had an angel. He had to let Sheldon know.

This was the breakthrough he had been looking for. This was the gateway to Sheldon finding restoration. He felt a giddy sense of joy he gave a whoop of laughter and did not see the puzzled look that Alexa dashed his way.

She tried slowing down but he kept up his hurried pace. "Would you slow down," she said as he rushed her along. "I am perfectly fine."

She had misinterpreted his haste in thinking he was trying to get her away from the Shady figure when in reality he wanted her to let Sheldon know that the angels were real.

"Hurry, we have to get to Sheldon," he said and she once again misinterpreted the situation. Thinking that something had happened to the man she tried daring herself not to care about she hurried her pace. Her heart raced as her boots slapped against the pavement behind Maleek's long strides.

To say she was relieved when they stepped through the cafe doors would have been an understatement. She had to get to Sheldon. She made for the stairs mounting them speedily almost stripping as she rushed to the man who had her heart in the palm of his hands but the sound of Sheldon's voice stopped them dead in their tracks as they opened the door and stood in the doorway of his office.

"I have started the arrangements to sell the Angel's Cafe, I have the potential buyers coming in tomorrow."

Alexa felt her whole world crumbled as the words reverberate around her. She did not know she had spoken until she heard her own voice saying.

"I want in on the bid!"

Dark eyes met hers and for a minute was lost in the drowning depths that engulfed her in a warmth that she had never felt before, not even with her ex-husband the one man she thought she had lost her all to forever.

He blinked, causing her to pull herself together, and said more calmly. "I want to buy The Angel's Cafe."

She wanted him to say something but he just stood there as if she had said something incomprehensible.

She took his silence for rejection and felt the fire of all that she had been denied in the past blazed wild and engulfed her.

"I will get the Angel's Cafe if it takes dragging you to court on behalf of everyone who works here and who has come to value this place with all their heart. I will get a petition a signed." She told him her heart was fueled with determination. "I will not let you sell a legacy away to some corporate leech who wants nothing more to benefit from profits other than seeing to it that a tradition is maintained."

With that said she stormed from the office. Too long everyone had done to her what they saw fit thinking it's only what's best for them, however, this was the last time anything like this would happen again. She would let Sheldon rue the day he decided to be selfish and prejudice.

How could he not think of His friends and family and how devastated and distraught they would be to lose an heirloom that was far more for Mistle than it was for the McIntosh's.

She had thought her heart was broken when her parents, sister, and her husband had betrayed her. This was nothing compared to what she now felt as she realized that in fighting to win the Angel's Cafe she was unknowingly all along fighting for the one man who she realized she cared for just as equally.

She felt tears burn her eyes and spill down her cheeks. She fished the chain from her neck and grip the stone in her trembling fingers as she made for the workers' room.

With a despairing heart and on feet of lead she walked to the wall phone and placed a call that had the caller answering in surprise.

Silence filled the line after she was through speaking and for a minute Alexa felt all was lost until a soft determined reply came.

"I'll do it for you, despite everything you're my sister."
