Chapter Five
I wake back up with the sun. My muscles are cramped and sore from the hard run and sleeping in a tree. I move my legs a little bit before noticing the weight on my lap. My eyes shoot open before seeing what it is. The Zemrlt child. He still sleeps soundly against my chest. Good thing I didn't drop him. We're actually pretty high up. I hope he's ok. It looks like we've both stopped bleeding.
So...... now what do I do? I can't go back to the kingdom while I have him. I'll have to go back eventually, though. It's still my home. And the head master will be too prideful to turn me in. He won't want to admit that someone he raised disobeyed King James. But it was the right thing to do, and I couldn't bare seeing them killed for no reason.
I look around the area to see that the spirit is watching us from the ground. They stand next to two other shadows who are a little shorter then they are. I can usually recognize each different spirit, but I don't know these two. I wave down at them, getting some waves back.
And then he moves. My head snaps down to the child that I hold in my arms. He twists around in my arms and makes a little sleepy noise that I find absolutely adorable. He opens his dark gray eye, one being a startling white, and looks around before freezing in my arms. He looks at one of my arms holding him, before following up to my face. "....Hi!", I chirp to him. He immediately squeals and pushes himself away from me. Unfortunately, we are in a tree. I grab back onto his arm and try to pull him back up. Once again, I'm not very strong. I loose my balance and fall to the ground while pulling him on top of me. I land heavily on my side.
I'm a little winded from him landing on me, and don't react right away when he scrambles off of me. "W-wait!", I shout as he tries to run away from me. I quickly get to my feet and chase after him. I easily catch up to him and wrap my arms around his waist. He shrieks and squirms to get out of my grasp. "I'm not going to- oof", I try to say as his foot kicks me in the side. "My Sibs! I want my Sibs!", he screams at me. His voice is less gruff then his sister and brother, but still not used very often. I'm not sure what Sibs are, but I'm going to assume that they're important. I try to talk to him to clam him down, but he keeps screaming and kicking me.
I'm at a lost on what to do until some part my brain decides to finally work. I instinctively start making a low thrumming noise in the back on my throat. It's almost like an ocelots's purr, but more gruff and rumbling. The wither child slowly starts to calm down and eventually stops squirming in my grip. He instead cries into my arm. I hesitantly sit down with him in my lap while continuing to 'thrum'.
"My Sibs...... were are my Sibs.....", he whimpers. "Who are your Sibs?", I quietly ask him. He sniffs and tries to wipe his eyes while turning to face me. "My sister, my brother....... they were with me before you took me away........ humans killed them, didn't they", he sobs. My only answer is to hold him closer. He starts crying all over again, and this time I can't do anything to help.
This is when a dark form appears in the corner of my eye. I turn my head to see one of the new shadows crouching down next to me. The other stands beside them. They don't seem to acknowledge that I'm there, they watch the Zemrlt child. If I don't recognize them, and he had two older siblings, does that mean.......... I quickly nudge him. He looks at me with teary eyes before noticing the two spirits. He can see them. For once in my life, I'm not different. He can actually see them. I can't help but cry a little behind my mask while watching them. The siblings seem to stare at each other before all smiling. At least I think the two shadows are smiling. The one crouched down puts a weightless hand on his shoulder, a thousand words seem to pass between them. The other turns to look at me, then at his little brother. He seems to say 'take care of him for me'. The entire thing has tears streaming down my face.
The two Sibs then step back. The shorter of the two wraps their arm around the other's neck, and they seem to slowly fade from view. The Zemrlt child is still crying, but seems to understand, even if I don't. And then they're gone.
"They came back for me........ just to make sure that I was going to be ok.....", he whispers. "So you can see them?", I ask just for confirmation. "Of course I can see them, that what's happened when my eye turned white", he sniffs. This makes me turn my head to look for the spirit that follows me around. They stand a couple feet away, just watching. "What about them? Do you see them?", I ask him. He turns to look, but says, "I can't see anyone except them, and they left". This makes my hope fall a little bit, but this isn't the time to be sorry for myself. I have a responsibility now. I made a promise to the spirits of his Sibs, and I'll see it through.
