The entire mall was blanketed in a thick, palpable silence, with each and every eye turned towards the scene. Izuku paused for a moment before feeling as if he were filled with a burst of energy, clenching and unclenching his hands while he breathed heavily.
His lips quirked up into a smile, only for his expression to fall when his eyes dragged themselves downwards.
Eyes widening, Izuku felt as if his heart had stopped in the middle of a beat, legs shaking until they gave way under him. He ignored the soreness radiating from his knees, fingers trembling as they reached up to cover his mouth.
"No...," he whispered.
Izuku watched helplessly as blood grew into the fabric before him, like a rose blooming in a garden of cloth. It was far from beautiful, though. It was sickening.
The freckled boy felt as tears rolled down his cheeks, feeling as if he could choke on the air around him.
He watched through blurry eyes as Aizawa rushed over, fashioning his capture weapon into a makeshift, waisted tourniquet around the wound.
It was as if sound itself had disappeared, leaving only him and a pale body in front of him.
Stop freaking out about the goddang line below - just continue reading on or move on from the story. I'm sick of "nope im leaving," telling me im a bad person for doing this, etc. because I wrote angst in an angsty story. It'll get better, which you'll know if you don't just drop it.
Sorry, but christ it needed to be said.
Uraraka's body.
Izuku ran his fingers through his hair, trying but failing to bite back tears as they spilled from his eyes, unable to look away from the seeping blood despite the sickening feeling that churned within his stomach.
The boy crawled desperately towards the girl, ignoring the shaking weakness in his limbs as he did so.
"Uraraka," he whispered, brushing her hair from her forehead. The girl barely winced, face pale as she forced herself to breathe. Her fingers were curled into claws, wishing to swoop towards her wound, only to be batted away by Aizawa as he attended to it.
Ignoring the man behind him, Izuku inched closer. "Please," he mumbled desperately, tears wetting her clothes. "Don't die. I..."
He let out a shaky breath as Uraraka's eyes travelled upwards, just barely able to focus on Izuku's face.
"I...zu...," she whispered, lips curled into a pained smile. "G-guess... I finally...," she breathed heavily, "S-saved you... Huh...?"
"Stop talking," Izuku replied quickly and frantically, "I don't want you to-"
Despite his protests, Uraraka allowed further whispers to escape her lips. "Guess... I'm not... useless... after all..."
Izuku's eyes widened. "Wh- You were never useless!" He curled his fingers onto his jeans, shaking his head as tears fell from his eyes. "I just wasn't strong enough. I... I never tried to ask for help..."
"Stop... blaming... yourself...," Uraraka laughed, causing Izuku's to stomach to churn as she winced. She faintly lifted her hand, placing it on the boy's cheek. "You know, Izu...," she mumbled sleepily, "...I always thought... y-you could be... A hero..."
Izuku stiffened as her hand slid down his cheek, falling limply to the ground as her eyes closed. "No," he whispered. "Uraraka!"
The boy began panicking, reaching out his hands. "Wake up! Wake up, please!"
He breathed heavily as his mind replayed the sound of the bullet's whistle, forcing him to watch as it pierced through Uraraka's stomach every time he blinked.
"Why...?" he whispered breathlessly. After a moment he yelled into the air, letting out a guttural scream that sent chills down the spines of all around him.
"Young Midoriya," a voice said softly, causing the boy to stiffen as he reclaimed his breaths. All Might's hand fell upon Izuku's shoulder, a sort of warm kindness emanating from the man. "It'll be okay."
"S...she...," Izuku gulped, eyes still glued onto the girl in front of him.
All Might kneeled down next to him, pulling the boy into a hug. "I know..." His eyes flicked towards her body, stomach churning. "I... I know..."
Izuku was still for a moment, not even letting out a breath. However, he suddenly allowed himself to fall into the man's arms, letting out gut-wrenching sobs. "It's my fault," he cried.
The man didn't reply to his words, as he only knew it'd make the situation worse. Instead, he simply held Izuku close, allowing him to cry into his arms. "It'll be okay..."
---
All Might sat next to the freckled boy, feeling the tension prickle at his skin. Both sat in a total silence, only occasionally broken by the clacks of shoes down the hall, and murmured words between doctors.
The man felt guilt pierce through him each time his eyes flicked towards Izuku, who breathed heavily in the chair beside him, burying his head into his knees.
He couldn't bear to see the boy in such a state, and couldn't help but feel responsible. Not only was he the one who set Izuku off in the first place, but he wasn't fast enough to stop Uraraka from being hit.
Sighing, All Might placed his hand on his head. Each time it was silent, the boy's cries echoed in his mind. God, he hated when he had to wrench the boy from the ground as the ambulance came in - a horrible, dead look in his eyes. There was no struggle, but his pale skin and ghostly look were more than enough to make his heart drop.
Izuku, with an extreme amount of urging from All Might (along with Nezu), was given special clearance to be in the hospital, with all of his crimes being ignored for the moment. For the time, All Might had hoped, he'd at least be free of some sort of burden.
Still, the man knew that Izuku wouldn't just snap back like everything was normal. After all, he watched himself hurt someone he deeply cared for, and he couldn't do a single thing about it.
(NOTE: HERE ALL MIGHT'S ABOUT TO TELL DEKU ABOUT NANA. THERE WAS MONTHS IN BETWEEN THE WRITING AND THIS WAS A MISTAKE. SORRY.)
All Might sighed, mind tracing back to his younger days as a hero. And, after a moment, he spoke up. "Nana Shimura."
Izuku stirred slightly. "...What?"
The man gave a soft smile, a hint of sadness behind his eyes. "That was my mentor's name."
"...The one in the picture."
All Might hummed in reply. "That'd be her."
Izuku spoke slowly. "Why... Why are you mentioning her...?"
"She... helped me through life. When I felt as if I couldn't do anything, and just as I was about to give up just like you...," All Might said quietly, "I was quirkless, and she gave me that hope."
Izuku's eyes widened, peering from over his legs. "Quirkless...?"
All Might chuckled, a hint of pain in his voice. "Yes. I was quirkless before Nana gave me One For All. She... She was the one who trained me throughout the years."
The boy paused for a moment. "...Why are you telling me this?"
"Because...," he replied with a fondness in his eyes, "I thought you'd need it. I..." He squeezed his eyes shut, trying desperately to hold back his weakness, "I wasn't able to save her when it counted. But...," his eyes flicked towards a wide-eyed Izuku, "She was able to save me."
"I..."
"I was so... angry at her for doing what she did," All Might said, laughing slightly. "But more than that..." He paused, looking up and sighing. "I was angry at myself. I was so convinced that I could've helped if she had just... let me. Now, though, I see that her sacrifice saved a lot more lives than my own that day."
Izuku glanced downwards. "I... see..."
"What I'm saying, my boy," All Might caught Izuku's attention, placing his hand on the boy's shoulder, "Is that you shouldn't feel guilty over what Young Uraraka did to help you."
The freckled boy bit his lip, looking away. "But I was the one who hurt her... It's... different."
"But," All Might said quietly, "It was her choice to help you, wasn't it?" He waited before catching the boy's attention. "Young Midoriya... She cares about you. That's why she did it. Not over some sort of obligation. And she didn't do it so you'd sit around feeling guilty about it."
"It's still my fa-"
"God," the man chuckled. "If I hear anyone say that it's their fault again after that whole mall display, I might have to retire early." All Might turned slightly, smiling softly at the boy's embarrassed blush before continuing. "Anyways, the point is that, yes, you could've done more, and yes, you will regret that you didn't. But even when you make those mistakes, friends you care for will always be there to back you up. If they didn't care, they wouldn't put themselves in danger for you."
Izuku sighed, allowing his legs to fall off of his chair and onto the floor. "I... I guess you're right..."
"Don't look so down in the dumps, Young Midoriya," All Might smiled. "Young Uraraka will be alright, I promise. And when everything's done and over with, you'll be able to see that everyone cares - they really do."
The freckled boy stared at All Might for a moment before giving a slight laugh. "Thanks, All Might."
The man chuckled. "Call me Toshinori."
"Wh-what?!" Izuku suddenly sputtered.
"Great!" All Might grinned. "You're already doing better."
Izuku blushed. "I really couldn't-"
"Calm down, Young Man," All Might chuckled. "Do whatever makes you comfortable. Though, I'd prefer if you'd be more relaxed around me."
The boy glanced downwards. "Uhm... Sorry, All-... Er... Toshinori..."
---
Izuku's green curls were pressed against the bed sheets, small droplets of drool below his cheek as he slept.
And, ever so slowly, the girl beside him fluttered her eyes open, head just barely turning towards the boy. A small, soft smile crept onto her face despite her tiredness, heart fluttering with indescribable relief.
"Izu," she whispered quietly, pausing as she watched him stir. She let out a slight laugh when he nodded back off, ignoring the burning numbness in her stomach.
After a moment, she fell back onto her pillow, staring up at the ceiling with a sad smile on her face. Just as she was about to allow herself back into the dream world, though, her eyes were drawn back to Izuku as he hummed, lifting his head slightly and blinking sleepily.
"Uraraka...?" he mumbled as his eyes met hers. After a moment, the situation truly seemed to register, and Izukus' eyes widened. "You're... You're okay!"
The girl smiled softly, pushing herself into a sitting position. "I am."
"Oh- wait!" he said frantically, "Don't move too much - I don't want you getting hurt! The doctors said that if-"
"Izuku, I'm fine," Uraraka laughed. The boy blushed at the name, and Uraraka continued with a grin and a thumbs up. "See?!" she patted her stomach, "It's all bandaged up and it's numb anyways, so I can't really feel it. We're all good here!"
"Still...," Izuku mumbled, cheeks still tinged with red.
"Hey, Izu," Uraraka caught his attention, causing the boy to hum in reply. "You know that I'm not mad at you, right?" She searched his eyes for a moment, watching as his face shifted. "I promise - I'm really not."
"Er... Okay...," he replied awkwardly.
"Izuku," she sighed. "I'm serious. You need to stop blaming yourself."
"People have been telling me that lately," he mumbled.
Uraraka laughed slightly. "Well clearly that means something."
He sighed, running his fingers through his hair. "I'm... still sorry, though."
"I forgive you, then!" the girl replied with a grin, bringing a pink flush to Izuku's cheeks. "So stop feeling bad about it. If I was really mad, I'd say so, alright?"
Izuku playfully raised a brow. "You're really sounding like a therapist, y'know."
Uraraka's eyes widened, her own blush appearing on her cheeks. "Uh..."
After a moment of awkward eye contact, the two fell into laughter.
"Sorry, Izuku," Uraraka giggled, "I just wanted to make sure you were alright."
"It's fine," he replied, giving a laugh of his own, "I was being kind of stupid."
She, however, couldn't ignore the touch of pain in his voice. "I-"
"Uraraka!" Iida burst into the room, appearing by her bed in an instant. "I heard you were awake!"
Uraraka stared at him confusedly. "How...?"
Iida instantly brushed the question off, instead releasing a barrage of his own as more worried classmates poured in.
"Are you okay? Does your stomach hurt? How much rest do you need?"
Unfortunately for Uraraka, the questions didn't end there, and she awkwardly laughed as she was swarmed by her classmates, attempting to answer the questions with haste.
Meanwhile, Izuku found himself behind the rest of the class, sitting silently in a chair as he fiddled with his thumbs. Raising his head to see everyone, he sighed, giving a sad smile as he stood. "I'm glad you have so many friends that care," he spoke quietly, placing his hand on the door before leaving.
After a bit of aimless wandering, Izuku found himself on the hospital's rooftop, pressing his back against the covering of the staircase as he looked through the railings and towards the city.
His eyes wandered around the city, a sigh escaping his lips as he placed his head into his hands, wind rushing past him. "I know what you said, but...," Izuku whispered quietly, "It'll be better if I just disappear..."
A loud door suddenly slammed before a voice came from his side - the culprit breathing heavily. "That... sounds... ridiculous!"
Izuku glanced to the side, freezing once his eyes met hers. "U-Uraraka?!" He stood, panicked. "What are you doing up here?! You should be in bed!"
"I should be asking you the same thing!" Uraraka replied, brow twitching in something reminiscent of anger.
"Er... Sorry...," Izuku replied sheepishly, sighing.
Uraraka paused to catch her breath for a moment before taking a seat next to Izuku. "Really... Why are you up here...?"
"I didn't want to bother you...," he admitted.
The girl sighed. "Izuku, you weren't bothering me."
"But-"
Uraraka took Izuku's hands in hers, forcing him to look into her eyes. "Listen, Izuku. I don't know how many times I'll have to tell you this, but I'll say it as many times as I have to. I am not mad at you, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with you, okay?"
"I-"
The girl raised a brow. "If you're just going to put yourself down again, I'm not going to let you speak."
Izuku's mouth snapped shut, causing Uraraka to sigh.
"Izuku...," she mumbled, glancing to the side. "I... I'll never understand how you feel. I can admit that. But," she looked back towards them, both of them blushing lightly, "I want to try. I don't want you to be in this alone."
Uraraka dropped Izuku's hands, but didn't miss the fact that they lingered in the air for a moment as she ran her own through her hair. "You don't need to be afraid of me, because I'm not afraid of you. And," she bit her lip, blushing, "You don't need to try to convince me to like you. Because...," she raised her head, trying her best not to laugh nervously, "I already do."
Izuku's own cheeks reddened. "I..."
"Izuku," she squeezed her eyes shut. "I really like you. And I mean... Like... Uhm...," she laughed awkwardly, internally scolding herself at her absolute inability to speak.
"Me too," Izuku replied quietly, glancing downwards. "I like you too."
Uraraka's blush reached ungodly levels. "Wait... Er... like...?"
Izuku gave a slight laugh. "Like... more than a friend."
Uraraka swore she heard Mina's ghost cackling.
"Oh...," she mumbled in reply.
The boy's eyes widened. "Wait- is that not what you meant?! I'm so sorry, I-"
Uraraka laughed. "No, no. That's what I meant." She sighed, smiling. "I'm sorry, it's just... I've never... Yeah."
"So uhm...," Izuku said after a moment of silence. "What now...?"
"I don't know," the girl mumbled, "I really didn't think I'd get this far..."
Izuku snorted, causing Uraraka to laugh as well.
After a moment, the boy spoke up again, nervously brushing strands of hair from his forehead. "...Just uhm... One more thing,"
Uraraka hummed in reply. "Hmm?"
"Did...," he took in a deep breath, glancing at the girl before him. "Did you really mean it when you said I could be a hero...?"
Uraraka paused for a moment before laughing. "Of course, Izu."
"...Well," Izuku said softly, giving a bright smile before tilting his head. "I think I have the perfect name."
