Chapter Five- Babysitting
Pietro and Alana ran around at Wanda's feet. The twenty-seven year old pulled her blonde and brown hair into a ponytail. She grabbed them a bag of popcorn and put it in the microwave.
"Ms. Maxi?" Alana asked.
"Yes, Lonnie?"
"Can you sing us a song?"
Wanda scoffed. "I can't sing."
"Please?" She looked up, puppy dog eyes in mode.
Wanda sighed. She scraped through her mind, trying to find a song. Then she remembered a song that she loved. It reminded her of Vision in a bittersweet way. She looked it up on the music on her phone. "Now, I didn't think either of you have ever heard this song." She hit play. She started singing along to the song, the two young kids listening intently.
"Flashing lights and we, took a wrong turn and we. Fell down a rabbit hole. You held on tight to me. Cuz nothing's as it seems. Spinning out of control.
"Didn't they tell us 'don't rush into things'? Didn't you flash your green eyes at me? Haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds?
"Ooh didn't it all seem new and exciting? I felt your arms twisting around me. I should've slept with one eye opened at night.
"We found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And we pretended it could last forever, eh. We found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And life was never worse but never better, eh.
"In wonderland, eh. In wonderland, eh. In wonderland, eh. In wonderland
"So we went on our way. Too in love to think straight. All alone or so it seemed. But there were strangers watching. And whispers turned to talking. And talking turned to screams.
"Didn't they tell us 'don't rush into things'? Didn't you flash your green eyes at me? Didn't you calm my fears with the Cheshire cat's smile?
"Ooh didn't it all seem new and exciting. I felt your arms twisting around me. It's all fun and games, 'til somebody loses their mind.
"Oh darling, we found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And we pretended it could last forever, eh. We found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And life was never worse but never better, eh.
"In wonderland, eh. In wonderland, eh. In wonderland, eh. In wonderland.
"I reach for you. But you were gone. I knew I had to go back home. You searched the world for something else. To make you feel like what we had. And in the end in wonderland we both went mad.
"Oh, we found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And we pretended it could last forever, eh. We found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And life was never worse but never better, eh. We found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And we pretended it could last forever, eh.
"We found wonderland. You and I got lost in it. And life was never worse but never better. In wonderland."
Alana had started dancing halfway through the song, forcing her brother to join her. She spun to a stop, clapping her hands. "YAY, Ms. Maxi!"
Wanda chuckled, pulling the finished popcorn out of the microwave, pouring it into bowls. She handed a bowl to each of the kids, and then they went to the living room to watch Harry Potter.
Halfway through the movie, Wanda got up to get more popcorn. Her phone rang. 'Nice timing,' She thought as she answered it, continuing to the kitchen. "Hey, Nat."
"Hey, Wanda. I just finished up a mission nearby. You wouldn't mind me crashing by god the night, would you?"
"Oh, I'd love that, Nat! I-" Suddenly Wanda remembered an important detail. "But I'm babysitting my neighbors' kids until 9pm."
"How trustworthy are these kids?"
Wanda pondered the question. "Very." She decided.
"Then I'll come anyway."
"Alright," Wanda smiled, happy that she was getting to see her mother/sister figure again. "See you soon?"
She could sense Natasha's smile. "See you soon."
Two hours later, when they were watching the climax of Frozen, Wanda got a text from Nat. She was five minutes away. She paused the movie, getting groans from the two small children. "Pietro, Alana. Look at me, I have something very important to tell you. I have a friend coming over in a minute. You'll really like her, trust me. But you've gotta promise you won't tell anyone, and I mean ANYONE what I tell you tonight. Otherwise I'll get in a lot of trouble."
"She's not a bad guy, is she?" Pietro asked skeptically.
"No, she's not. I promise. I'd never let anything hurt you, ok? But I have a few things I need to tell you that you have to promise not to tell anyone."
The two siblings met eyes. "Promise." They decided.
Wanda smiled at them. "Ok, first things first, my name actually isn't Maxine. I know I said it was. I lied. My name is actually Wanda."
"So... we can't call you Ms. Maxi anymore?" Pietro asked. "When there's no one else around?"
"You can, cuz it's my actual nickname."
"Why?"
"It's short for my last name, Maximoff."
"Maximoff? Like Wanda Maximoff? WAIT YOU'RE SCARLET WITCH?!"
"Just yell it for the whole world to hear, why don't ya?" Wanda muttered. "And yes."
Alana's eyes were filled with delight. "Show us!"
Wanda smiled, forming a benevolent ball of magic in her palm.
"Can I touch it?" Pietro asked as his sister reached for it.
Wanda nodded. The two kids touched it, giggling.
"It tickles!" Alana said, the biggest smile Wanda had seen on her face.
She dispersed the red ball, making the kids frown. "Now, you two. This is a big secret. There area lot of people who really don't like me and want me to go to prison. And I really don't like prison."
"You've been to prison?!" Pietro asked, his jaw dropped.
Wanda's smile dropped. "Once, for a month. I used my powers when I wasn't supposed to and caused some damage. So I got in trouble with the UN."
"What's the UN?" Alana asked curiously.
"The United Nations. It's a group of officials from a bunch of countries around the world that make decisions about things like international laws and war crimes. They decided what I did was a war crime, which is why I went to prison. Captain America got me out. I might still be there otherwise." There or dead, probably.
"That sounds like a lot of trouble over not to much," Pietro said.
Wanda shrugged. "Wish you were in charge of that, Piet. But you guys gotta promise again that you won't tell."
"PROMISE!!!"
Wanda laughed.
"Is your friend that's coming an Avenger?!" Pietro asked excitedly.
"Yep," Wanda said.
"Is it War Machine?!"
Wanda smiled. Rhodey was delighted when she had informed him her neighbors' son thought he was the coolest superhero. He said he'd be willing to meet the kid anytime, as long as he didn't have plans.
"No, but I'll see what I can do about letting you meet him."
Pietro looked starstruck. "Then who is it?"
"Well, Ms. Maxi said it was a her, so..." Alana's eyes went wide. "IS IT BLACK WIDOW?!"
"See for yourself," Nat said with a smile, entering the house.
The little girl's eyes were wide as saucers. She squealed, jumping up and down.
"YOU must be Alana." Natasha said with a smiled.
Alana nodded vigorously, still fangirling.
Nat laughed and spread her arms. Alana barreled into them, giving her favorite superhero a big hug. "YOU'RE THE BEST BABYSITTER EVER, MS. MAXI!"
Wanda laughed. "Why, thank you."
"Coolest day ever," Pietro breathed.
