Chapter 3 - A Skirmish and Mirror Confused
Almost immediately after Crowley said that, he turns and starts walking again. You (yet again) jog after him since his long legs make him slightly faster than you (you know a lot of tall people, yet Crowley seems even more so unreasonably tall).
Despite his explanation of what this 'Night Raven College' is, your mind is still overflowing with questions.
What is 'Twisted Wonderland'? Is it a new region? Why does he keep confusing you as a man? How'd this robe thing get on you?
You follow him down the maze-like halls until you two step back into the room you first awoken in when the Meow- you mean, 'cat', attacked the coffin you woke up in.
Except now there's a bunch of people, all wearing the same robe as you, and except on some you see... ears and tails bearing a resemblance to certain Pokémon?
That's unusual. You've never seen 'human-Pokémon' hybrids. And yet you've witnessed an entire town except you and Kieran get brainwashed by Pecharunt with it's poisonous mochi...
Perhaps- as usual as this is- Pokémon-people hybrids are not that unexplainable. Anyways, no one seems panicked, so naturally this is probably normal in this region.
As you look around at the peacefully chatting people, you decide to pull your hood back on your head like everyone else so you don't stand out. You silently pray to Arceus no one recognizes you as one of Paldea's strongest Pokémon trainers (and just as one of the strongest Pokémon trainers in the world).
Then, you realize you don't see any other girls. You seem to be the only biological girl here. How... concerning. That makes you being here even more strange.
"We're done with orientation and dorm assignments?"
You blink in surprise when one voice speaks up, significantly louder than all the muttering of the people talking with one another. You look around until you notice who's the one talking.
A red haired boy who's noticable shorter than you (like, by an entire head), with two strands of hair in his face that form almost a heart-esc shape.
Red hair? Not too surprising to you. Hoenn's current champion (Omega, you believe his name is?) has red hair. And it's naturally that color. So while brightly colored hair is a bit rarer, it's not completely unnatural to see it.
"Alright new students, let me be clear!" The boy says, a determined and stern expression on his face, "At Heartslabyul dorm, I am the law. Break the rules, and it's off with your head!"
...he wouldn't really chop off someone's head, right..?
Well, just looking at him, you know he's going to be very, very strict. Almost unreasonably so, to be honest.
You barely realize you're nervously shrinking back as Ogerpon (best known to you as Poni) carefully and stealthily sneaks out in the faintest flash of red and white and grabs your hand with her own.
She looks up at you, not wearing any of her masks, with a sweet smile on her little orange face. The little 120 centimeter Pokémon gently nods up at you.
Strange. Usually you're the one comforting Poni. And now the roles have been reversed. Heh, amusing.
Poni- along with Moonstone- are probably your most clingy Pokémon. They're almost always out of their Pokéballs and with you.
"Yawn," You look up and see a tall (like, almost as tall as Dire Crowley, if not slightly taller), tanned boy with what look like brown Luxray-like ears and tail, and a slim scar over his right e, "Well, that ceremony was boring as ever... If you're in Savanaclaw, follow me." He absent-mindedly waves his hand and a bunch of Pokémon-eared students approach him. One even slightly shoves you, and gives you and Ogerpon a confused look.
You quickly scoop up Poni and hold her in your arms, wanting to avoid letting anyone bump into the tiny Pokémon.
The Luxray-eared man... he's lazy. But you immediately recognize that he's smart. Yet his laziness may be detrimental to him...
"New students! Allow me to be the first to congratulate you and your new achievement!"
You blink in surprise and edge towards Crowley, who gives Ogerpon a confused look. You're usually less jumpy, but all of this is so new. You never got any orientation. You were just assigned a dorm and simple as that.
Poni shakes slightly, her mask of unworry slipping as she pulls out and slips on her Teal Mask, wanting to avoid any attention being drawn to her.
You look over at the white-ish blue-ish haired boy with glasses who was the one who just spoke up, and you notice a beauty mark below the left side of his lip. Seems completely natural, but you haven't seen many people with beauty marks...
"As the dorm leader of Octavinelle," He says as he puts his hand to his chest, attempting to give the appearance of a more welcoming front, but you have a gut sense something is off, "I am honored to have the opportunity to support you in what I hope will be a fulfilling campus experience."
While he puts up a welcoming front, you recognize that this man is manipulative and untrustworthy. Gotta keep your guard up around him...
You notice Crowley is staring intently at Ogerpon, who seems uncomfortable with it, and you wave your hand in front of his face. He blinks, and snaps his focus to you with a raised eyebrow (you think, slightly hard to tell with the mask).
"Does anyone know where the Headmage went?" Another boy steps forward, his arms crossed, "He disappeared mid-way through the ceremony."
You raise an eyebrow, noticing how pretty he is. That is, if you gave a shit about physical appearance. You're the same person who absolutely fawned over Grace when you met him as a sad Feebas, and genuinely thought he was beautiful the way he was. You gave him enough moral support he essentially willed himself to evolve.
But focus on the boy...
Tall, blond hair swept to the side of his face. Hair's about chin-length, with ends colored a noticeable yet pretty shade of lavender. Smooth voice and no noticeable blemishes on his physical appearince. In fact, he reminds you slightly of Gym Leader Tulip. Except this man- unlike Tulip- seems a bit vain... and obviously he thinks highly of himself.
"Some Headmage he is..." A voice speaks up from a floating tablet you notice is directly next of you. Oh, a Rotom or Porygon tablet. Interesting. Except where are the eyes for the Pokémon?
The screen is bright blue, and the case is white. You decide to politely wave at the tablet, and Poni quickly follows suit. No response from the tablet though...
"Maybe he has a tummy ache?"
You glance at the annoyed Crowley, and then look towards the boy who said it. A boy with tan skin, fluffy white hair, and bright crimson eyes. Instead of a hood on his head, he's wearing a purple scarf. Just looking at him, you're suddenly given the same energy from this guy you get from Ogerpon. Just a precious innocent sweetheart who just means well.
"I most certainly did not!" Crowley says with an annoyed expression as he saunters forward, and you quickly take a few steps back.
If... wherever you are, as absolutely no one seems to recognize you, maybe you can finally spend a bit of time- until you get home at least- being mostly unnoticed?
You never asked for your popularity... maybe you can finally be yourself without thousands upon thousands of people caring about you!
Just gotta tell Toto to absolutely post nothing online.
Shouldn't be too hard, as much as that Rotom loves getting attention online around you and your friends... it's worse than Iono to be honest.
"Ah, speak of the devil..." The red hair boy says as he turns around, looking stern.
...what's a devil..? You've never heard of something like that.
"If you must know," He says, obviously about to speak about you, "I was searching for the new student who'd fail to show for orientation." He gestures his hand at you.
You've already turned around and are briskly walking to stand out of the way as everyone (and you mean everyone) turns to look at you.
Crowley responds by simply grabbing you by the collar and dragging you back slightly, as you groan internally. Now even more attention's on you, and even on Poni...
"You're the only one who has yet to be assigned a dorm. Step up to the Dark Mirror, and be quick about it. I'll watch your weasel and... strange, green child."
"...I thought you said it was a cat..?"
You ask near silently as your expression turns from nervous to concerned. Said 'weasel' starts growling in annoyance.
"Weasel, cat, what's the difference? Go, and please leave behind the little one." Crowley says with a slight shrug, a tad bit impatient.
You hesitate, and gingerly set down Ogerpon. She nervously shuffles from side to side, her little nub-like hands gently grabbing at her mask as she seems uncomfortable.
You shuffle up to the mirror, an uncomfortable grimace on your face as you try to ignore all the people staring at and whispering about you.
You can hear them y'know... jerks...
Dark green smoke ripples in the mirror, and a green mask with black, eyeless sockets appear inside of it.
...is this mirror possessed by some kind of Ghost-type Pokémon you've never seen?
"State your name." The Mirror says, it's voice slightly booming.
"Y- Y/N..." You respond hesitantly, "Y/N L/N..?"
"Y/N..." The Mirror repeats, before it goes quiet for a moment, "The nature of your soul is...unclear to me."
The entire room falls silent as dread fills your thoughts. Oh no...
Crowley makes a dramatic gasp, "What did you just say?"
"I sense no magical power from this young girl. Soundless. Colorless. Shapeless. Utterly vacant." The mirror elaborates. Rude... "Therefore, no dorm would be appropriate."
Ogerpon darts over to your panicking self as you shrink back into your hood like a Torkol that's been scared, as Crowley's eyes widen.
"Are you saying a black carriage went to recieve a person who cannot even use magic? And that they're a woman?"
Never, had you wanted to die so much. May Arceus please come and strike you down so you get out of this situation...
Just your luck younget brought somewhere new and get all the attention directed to you.
More whispers flood the room, now even less quiet than before. You can even make out some words...
"...Magicless..?"
"...the black carriages made a mistake..?"
"...she's a girl..?"
You pick up Ogerpon and hug her tightly, absolutely dying internally as you want to collapse to the ground and never move again.
Then your head snaps up at the 'cat' struggling against the leash due to no one paying attention to it.
"MMMPH! NRRRRRGH!" It gasps as it finally pops out of the leash, "ME! LET ME HAVE HER SEAT!"
Crowley glares at the cat, "Not so fast, you hyper-active weasel!"
The 'cat' clambers up to it's hind legs, a proud grin on it's face as it points at itself with a paw. "Unlike the human, I can actually use magic! So let me be a student here! Look, I'll show you now! My spells're the cat's meow!"
The cat suddenly leans back a bit and takes a deep breath, looking excited in a strange way...
"Everyone, get down!" The red haired boy says, holding up a hand towards the people where the cat stands in front of them.
You don't get a chance to duck down before a burst of blue fire comes directly at you. You barely flinch back as Poni immediately acts and hops up, using Spiky Shield to form a bright green and faintly glowing shield of spikes, which easily deflects the fire from you.
The 'cat' lets out a pleased smirk and starts firing out more fireballs. You stumble back a bit, holding Poni in your arms.
Chaos absolutely breaks loose as people start running and screaming. You stand by the mirror, a bit startled as you remain calm.
You've witnessed a time machine rip a hole in space-time before, this shit's normal for you.
"Okay! Poni! Uh-" You squint at the 'cat', "Seems like a Fire-type... maybe a Fire and Dark type? Well, let's just say Fire for now. Try... equipping either the Wellspring or Cornerstone Mask, and let's stop this rampaging Regional Meowth!"
Poni and you share a determined look (you can sense Poni looking determined under the Teal Mask) and nod at eachother, and hops out of your arms and lands neatly on the ground. She takes off her Teal Mask and exchanges it for her Wellspring Mask, placing the mask on her face.
Almost instantly the green on Poni's main body seamlessly shifts into the blue with white accents. She summons her Ivy Cudgel and brandishes it, raising it up as it's shrouded in water.
"Right! Ivy Cudgel!" You raise you hand with a fist-bump, a grin on your face as Ogerpon dashes forward and swings at the 'cat'.
It yelps and barely dodges, spewing fire towards Ogerpon, who swiftly dodges and retaliates with Counter.
"AAAAAHHHH! HELP! I'M ON FIRE OVER HERE!"
You look over at the Ogerpon-energy boy, who's running in circles and trying to stomp off the fire on his robes.
"WOAH! UH- HOLD STILL!" You dart over to him, and you feel a shake come from your bag as you know a Pokémon has come out of your bag. Which one? You don't know.
You grab onto his shoulders, giving him a sheepish grin as you help him stamp out the fire.
"Uh... any injuries?" You ask hesitantly, tilting your head.
"Whew, nope!" He says with a sheepish grin, slowly calming down, "Thank you... I thought I was a goner!"
You give him a thumbs up with a smile as another blast of fire comes at you, yet Moonstone- your Umbreon and first Pokémon- hops infront of you two and uses Light Screen.
"Oh dear- thanks Moonstone!" You grin at the Umbreon as you step away from the boy, standing by the Pokémon's side.
"C'mon! We gotta make sure Poni can handle this strange Regional Meowth!"
