Chapter 16 - Acception into the College
A/N: I found this song and I love it. I now bless all of you with it.
--------
You and your group (Chien-Pao having reluctantly went back in their Pokéball) burst back into the Mirror Chamber, you and Deuce holding the Magestone above your head.
Perfectly enough, Crowley was actually standing in the Mirror Chamber. He gives your group a bewildered look when he sees you all sitting on a derpy Koraidon and holding a Magestone in the air.
"Pardon? You're telling me you actually went to the Dwarf's Mine in search of a Magestone?"
"Yeah." You, Ace, and Deuce say in sync.
The Headmage brings a hand to his face, shaking his head in disbelief. "I didn't expect that you'd seriously do it. And never in my wildest imaginings did I think you'd seriously do it! And here I spent all evening preparing your expulsion documents."
"...way to show confidence in us, Headmage." You say sarcastically, not bothering to hide your frustration.
"Are you serious!?" Grim yowls a bit as he clambers up onto Koraidon's head. "While we were fightin' some crazy monster for you, you were expelling us?"
Crowley tilts his head. "Monster?"
"Yeah. There was a monster, all right! A big, nasty one. It nearly killed us!" Ace responds, looking just as annoyed as you.
"Would you kindly relate this story in full?"
--------
Your group (Koraidon going back in their Pokéball since they're a bit big and a little tuckered out from running around all night) now stands in front of Crowley from where he sits behind his desk in his office. Behind the desk is seven floating portraits which you guess is the Great Seven.
You, Deuce, and Ace finish recounting the story, Grim occasionally trying to take more claim for the events and pretending he wasn't scared most of the time. Crowley puts a hand to his chin.
"Hmmm... So a mysterious monster was living in the mines. And the four of you worked together to destroy it, and then brought its magestone back to me?" He gave you all inquisitive looks.
"I don't think I'd call it "working together"." Ace disputed as he rubs the back of his head.
Deuce nods in agreement with Ace. "It was more like we just happened to share the same goal at the same time."
You and Moonstone roll your eyes at the boys in sync. "Ignore them, Headmage," You say with an amused smile, "They just don't like to pretend they're probably friends- sir? Sir are you okay?"
You give Crowley a concerned look as the presumably much older man bursts into tears for seemingly no reason.
People here are so weird... and you're friends with the girl who's terrified of almost all Pokémon who are larger than 31 centimeters and is somehow the champion of Unova. She's nice, and you like her, but how is Grey even the champion of the region?
Oh wait, she did kinda save the world from Team Plasma. Reasonable, now that you remember it.
Wait, Crowley's still crying for no reason.
"Oh, gracious! Ohhhhh... ohhhhhhh!" You look at the other boys for help, feeling concerned about Crowley kinda just crying for no reason. Even the others look startled.
"What's this guy's deal? Burstin' into tears in public? At this age?" Grim crosses his arms from where he stands on your shoulders and leans on your head.
"In all the decades I've worked at this school..." Crowley dabs his eyes with a handkerchief he pulled out of nowhere. "The day has finally come when the students of Night Raven College has joined hands together to defeat a common foe!"
H- how hard is it for these boys here to work together as a team!?
"Woah! No! No way would I join hands with that guy!" Deuce waves a hand at Ace.
Ace scoffs. "Okay, one, there was no "joining of hands". Gross. And two, exactly how old are you, Headmage?"
"At this moment, I am moved beyond words." Crowley presses a hand to his chest with a pleased expression and tear-filled eyes. "This incident has proven my hopes were justified. Y/N, my doubts are allayed! For you... you possess talents of a beastmaster!"
You raise an eyebrow and look at Moonstone. "...you mean "Pokémon Master"? Because I literally am one, look," You pull out your I.D. card and show it to Crowley and the boys, "See? Right there, on the bottom beside the "Champion Rank Trainer, Head Champion", it says "Pokémon Master, Blueberry Academy, Kitakami, Paldea". Because I completed the Pokédexes in those- oh I'm losing you people. Sorry."
You trail off as you put your I.D. card away at the three people's blank looks.
"Please explain what a beastmaster is, such as what talents those are, as I'm even more confused than you people."
Crowley immediately snaps back to focus. "My students have all been selected by the Dark Mirror for their exceptional talent and potential. But great talent begets great pride and big egos. Most are so self-relient and self-sufficient they never even consider cooperating with others."
You silently turn to stare at Deuce and Ace. Crowley can sure say that again... you had to yell at these people to get them to listen, and to the name of Arceus you hate yelling at anything or anyone.
Just doesn't get the point across in away people want to listen to you out of genuine respect, y'know?
"You make that sound like a bad thing..." Grim grumbles. That's because it is, pequeño gato de fuego.
"But you, Y/N, possess no magic. Of course, outside of your strange monster companions, but those do not count as of the moment." Crowley continues, completely ignoring Grim. "Yet despite that- or perhaps because of it, you do need to explain to me what a Pokémon trainer exactly is, dear- you were able to convince others who can use magic to work together for a common goal."
You smile as you gently clap your hands in a hidden exasperation. "Sir. You literally just described Pokémon training. I do it every single day. Did- did you not-? nevermind..."
Seriously, everyone here is clueless. Just like you when it comes to romance.
Crowley seems to ignore your words and focus entirely on you with a small smile. "Y/N, I am convinced people like you are necessary for the future of the school. My educator's intuition tells me so. Trappola, Spade, I hereby revoke your pending expulsions!" Ace and Deuce immediately cheer, and Crowley ignores them as he continues. "Furthermore, Y/N... I am granting you the qualifications necessary to attend Night Raven College!"
You tilt your head. "But... I don't have magic? And isn't this a boy's college?"
Crowley waves his hand dismissively. "We can count your "Pokey Mans"-" You swear he's doing this on purpose now- "As a form of magic-using in a roundabout way. Though this will not be able to fully work, as I assume strongly that your little companions cannot use all forms of magic. You would not be able to adequately persue the schools curriculum! As for you, Grim... Your actions have made it clear you possess sufficient talent to become a mage."
Crowley leans forward a bit. "In light of the total sum of your respective circumstances, you and Miss. L/N will share a single enrollment at Night Raven College."
Grim perks up immediately. "Myah!? I... I'll get to go to this school..? As an actual student, not a janitor?"
Crowley nods. "Correct. However! There will be no further incidents like the one that occurred today. Are we clear?"
You and Moonstone nod politely as Grim looks like he's about to hyperventilate. Except from excitement and not panic as he flings his paws in the air. "Myah... myah... Human! I- I finally- I FINALLY DID IT!"
"Lovely!" You say with a polite grin, before mumbling to yourself. "...oh no, more school... and I'm already going to have to make up so much work at home... Clavell's gonna be so upset with me..."
Deuce places a hand on your back with a large smile on his face. "Congratulations, Y/N! Looking forward to seeing you in class."
Ace almost appears on your other side, grinning slyly at you. "Can't wait to see what else you get into."
You nod in slight amusement and look over at Crowley with a hopeful expression. "Uh- sir- did you figure out a way to get me home..?"
Crowley immediately freezes and glances away, trying to come up with an excuse. "Er... Accordingly, I will now present to Grim the Magestone that is issued to every student here!"
This man totally just ignored you. Rude...
Grim grins and tilts his head. "Heh! A Magestone, eh?"
"It is typically attached to the magic pen each student uses." Crowley explains. "But I suspect your paws cannot handle implements. Therefore, I have a custom solution for you." He presents a black and white striped ribbon with a dark lavender gem hanging from the middle of it. "Is it possible that I am, in fact, too kind?"
You carefully take the ribbon from Crowley's hands and tie it gently onto Grim's neck, crouching down and setting the cat on the floor as you tie the ribbon into a large bow on the back of Grim's neck.
Crowley grins proudly as he stares at the Magestone and holds it in his paws. "Ah sweet! I look awesome! A Magestone collar, to be worn only by the legendary archmage, Grim!"
The Headmage shakes his head in exasperation. "You're not listening to anything I say, are you? Y/N, as you can plainly see, Grim remains oblivious to the customs of human society. You are to keep a tight reign on Grim, and ensure there are no further incidents!"
You tilt your head, thinking. "...can I have a raise first?"
Crowley pauses. "Pardon?"
"Can I have a raise?" You repeat. "I mean, I still am working as a janitor in my free time, yes? I do have to pay for my food supplies and such... that you're not covering..?"
The silent looks Ace and Deuce give Crowley makes you want to snicker. They look so deadpan it's funny.
Crowley hesitates before clearing his throat. "Of course! Right- right- uh... Well, we don't exactly need anymore janitors at Night Raven College, and after today... how about we just leave you on standby until you're needed, and I will permit you receiving a weekly "allowance" that will cover all costs of living, as well as some extra money for yourself to spend, as long as you recieve relatively fair grades. Aren't I just too kind?"
You think for a moment. "...yes, that sounds good. Thank you sir. I ensure I'll do everything in my capability to keep further incidents from occurring."
"Wow, that's quite a promotion." Ace grins at you cheekily at you. "From janitor to student to prefect, all in the span of a day."
Deuce tilts his head. "Oh, I see. If the dorm is just you two... and the Headmage is putting you in charge of Grim, that makes you... the dorm prefect!"
You have no idea what a prefect is. Eh, you'll web search it later.
Ace snorts in amusement. "Well, that's gotta be a Night Raven first! A magic-less prefect who commands weird monsters? But sure, why not? Whatever works!"
You grin a bit. "I can see how that'd be unusual here. But I assure you, I didn't become a Pokémon champion and one of the best students at Pomelo Academy for nothing."
"Heheheh... good luck to you, magic-less prefect!" Ace teases you, looking amused by your determination.
Deuce gently elbows you in a friendly manner, obviously not wanting to bother Moonstone on your shoulders. "Let's see that same spirit you showed us in the Dwarf's Mine!"
"Ah, yes. I suppose that does make you a prefect. I just so happen to have another job for you, and that title will make it all the easier to foist... er- I mean- congratulations! Now, I have something for you." Crowley presents a camera, similar to one of the ones invented in Kalos during the 1700s, that's obviously quite old by any modern standards. "This is called a Ghost Camera."
"A Ghost Camera?" You ask in curiosity as you gently take the camera. You don't really take photos much, that's what Toto tends to do... eh, you'll just give it to them.
Ace peers over your shoulder (the one Moonstone isn't on) to stare at the camera. "Oooh! My grandma's told me about those. Those are, like, super old magic items, right?"
Crowley gapes at Ace in horror and offense. "I would hardly call them super old!" He clesrs his throat and calms down. "But it may indeed have been invented when your great or great-great grandmother was a child. It's a camera enchanted with a special kind of magic. It enables the user not to just photograph the subject's physical form, but parts of their soul as well."
"Wait," Deuce gives the camera a skeptical glance, "That sounds sketchy..."
"They're called Memories." Crowley assures. "Here's the thing: when a soulbond between the photographer and subject deepens... the Memories captured in this magic camera's photos comes jumping out!"
"Soulbond?" You ask with a raised eyebrow. Reminds you of the bond that allows some Pokémon to be able to Mega Evolve, from the sound of it...
"When the photographer and subject grow closer, their photographs grow animated like videos. And sometimes the photos take on corporeal form and slip out. Is that not what you youths call wicked keen?"
Everyone- and you mean everyone- give Crowley horrified looks as they cringe physically or internally.
"...so, if I were to take a photo of Moonstone, my other Pokémon, or my friends back home... the photos would be animated?" You ask.
"Exactly, my dear!" Crowley says with a smile at you.
"That almost sounds like ghost photography..." Deuce comments, and you give him a look of 'no shit it sounds like ghost photography, did you not hear the camera's name?'.
"Very astute." Crowley nods at Deuce. "Hence the name Ghost Camera. I understand it was developed as a more vivid way to capture moments in time, in an age before video. As Spade observed, in days of yore, when people saw Memories jumping out of the photos, they would get spooked and yell, "ghost"! I heard many a tale of people who were deathly scared of being photographed by such cameras."
Ace shakes his head with a sigh. "This tech sounds like way more trouble than it's worth..."
"Y/N," Crowley continues, ignoring Ace, "I would like you to photograph Grim and the other students- and your "Pokey Mans" I suppose- and make a record of your campus life."
You think for a moment as you stare at the camera. "I never took many photos... but I suppose it sounds fun. So why not?"
"Myah ha haa!" Grim laughs triumphantly, "Sounds like the perfect way to immortalize all my finest moments!"
Crowley clears his throat. "Make especially certain to capture the mischief caused by certain students with impulse control. Keeping a photographic journal sounds far less tedious than me writing length reports?"
"Uh..." Oh, he wants you to make his job easier...
"As a prefect, consider it your duty to maintain a sharp eye on your surroundings and record them. Note how generous I'm being in providing a rare magical item even someone like yourself can use. Is my kindness not beyond all reckoning?" Crowley smiles, pleased with himself.
"..." You plaster a fake smile on your face and hide any frustration you feel. "Of course sir!"
Crowley nods at you. "The hour has grown late, so further details will have to wait till the morrow. You are all dismissed. Return to your dorms."
"Good night sir." Deuce says with a nod as you all leave the Headmage's office.
--------
You four, with Moonstone on your shoulders, walk down the hallway leading away from the Headmage's office. Grim is in your arms again, content to be carried around in your arms.
"Today was... eventful." You comment in slight amusement.
"Phew..." Deuce breathed a sigh of relief. "We managed to avoid expulsion. That was a close one!"
"Yeah. No kidding..." Ace confirms a sigh
"Lalalalala!" Grim sings out as he excitedly waves his arms. "I'm a student at Night Raven College! Lalala~!" The cat grins slyly at the boys. "I'm gonna be the top mage on campus in no time! Enjoy eating my dust, boys!"
"Big words for a sentient pile of lint who's literally only half a student. But still..." Ace smiles at you. "Good for you."
"I guess we're schoolmates now." Deuce smiles sweetly at you. "Y/N, welcome to Night Raven."
You chuckle. "Haha... even in another world, I can't escape school..."
Ace tilts his head and crosses his arms. "Hey, what do you mean, "Another world"? And what's up with your monsters?"
You grin sheepishly. Hey, you're probably gonna keep getting into situations with these people, why not explain your situation to them?
"So... I'm from another world where these creatures called, "Pokémon" exist. Such as Moonstone here or Koraidon earlier. I'm a Pokémon trainer/champion, the head champion of Paldea currently- and the youngest head champion in the region's history- and I'm a student at Pomelo Academy there. For some reason, a strange mirror my mother gave me as a gift brought me into this world." You tilt your head to help emphasize your situation. "For now, I'm totally stuck here with my Pokémon and am unsure how to get home. The Headmage promised to help me figure out a way, but I'm uncertain how long that may take..."
You sigh. "Just my luck... I feel like a main character in a manga sometimes, and this just makes me feel like that more... Oh querida Arceus, salva mi alma..."
Deuce tilts his head. "Huh... Well, if you need any help with getting home, just ask me! I'll gladly help you."
Moonstone raises an eyebrow, intrigued by Deuce's willingness, and you smile. "Really? Thank you, mi nuevo amigo!"
Ace immediately leans over to you. "Don't forget me! I'll help as well!"
You grin over at Ace. "And thanks to you as well, mi otro nuevo amigo!"
The orange-haired boy groans a bit. "Okay, seriously, can we quit it with all the sappy stuff?"
You slyly wink at him. "Nah."
Ace gives you the most deadpan look he can, and Deuce chuckles. "We'll be seeing eachother all the time now. We'll see what a pleasure that turns out to be. Especially you, Ace, since we're in the same dorm."
"Yeeaaah... Can't say I'm jazzed to see your smug, self-important scowl everyday." Ace crosses his arms and looks annoyed.
"Better than your lazy, dopey grin." Deuce retorts.
"Keep bawlingm crybaby. I haven't forgotten how you almost wept when the Headmage said you were expelled. Catch you later, Y/N." Ace shoots you a wink as he and Deuce leave you, Moonstone, and Grim in the hallway as the two head back to their own dorm.
You turn around and start walking back to Ramshackle. "Those two are made for eachother." You comment in amusement as you hold Grim like a plushie.
Grim and Moonstone nod in agreement. "Maybe they're the type who bond through squabblin'?"
You shrug. "Perhaps. I'm just waiting until they kiss. Frenemies to lovers, anyone?"
The group laughs at the idea, though you all know they're probably never gonna kiss...
...why are you disappointed?
--------
Grim lounges on the bed with Miraidon, Koraidon, Ogerpon, and Moonstone as you hum to yourself. Both Paradox Dragons are out cold, and looking relaxed to be asleep. Even Terapagos decided to sleep on the side table tonight. A little sense of regularity is now slipping through into this world, hm?
You pause as you stand in front of the mirror, noticing your sunhat on the dresser beneath it.
"...hm?" You shrug it off, as weird as it is, and glance at Grim. "Hey, pequeño gato de fuego, do you care about the human body?"
"Myeh? No?" Grim tilts his head, and you nod.
"Cool, 'cus I'm getting changed." You explain, letting yourself relac as you take off your shirt.
"MYAH!?" Grim immediately stands up, his eyes wide, "Human! Y- your body!"
You smile as you look in the mirror, seeing you in a simple black bra Crowley found for you (you didn't ask where he found it, and you don't want to ask) and your upper torso. It's several shades lighter than the rest of your skin, spread from the middle of your neck, to your lower abdomen, and onto your left shoulder and elbow and a few speckles on your right arm.
"Yep..." You sigh. "That's a scar. Got it from... an incident. I'm fine now."
You shudder internally at the flashback. Seeing it fly at you... feeling the fire and rock collide with you... and then the pain. The searing, blinding pain that brought you to your knees for a few moments...
You recovered though. You always do.
"Don't mind it. Simply a sign of the past. Everything's gonna be okay. Anyways, you're finally attending the college of your dreams, I've made a few friends... things are going good." You smile at Grim. "Dwelling can come later, first comes sleep."
You don't take long to get changed and ready for bed, climbing onto it as you've replaced the bed frame earlier and put the broken one outside on the porch.
You feel your eyes flutter closed as Grim, Moonstone, and Poni all drift off you sleep.
Maybe... this world won't be so bad.
