All That Matters
Harsh lights
In darkness lay,
Like broken bottles
On an endless quay.
Bright shining seas
Stretching far away,
From places that we never see,
To tomorrows that exist today.
The space between a moment
That leads on to another;
The echo in a robin's call,
And hearts all split asunder.
The mysteries
That only live
In the secret places
That we never give
To others
That we
Don't know
Or see.
The hopes
That we
Hold close to us,
Our lives set out to be.
Blinding truths
And broken lies,
Open your mind
To close your eyes.
Things we see
Without seeing,
Cold hearts in pain
These things are bringing.
All these things and more
We know,
But never think upon,
For if we gave in to the show,
We'd live like beggers
Without hope,
Seeking things that they can't know,
Always hanging from another's rope.
You'd think that if
We didn't know
These things that we don't know,
We would be free of low
Yet lofty lies
That spring from hidden meanings
In a lover's arms
And hide in their gleanings.
But we are not
And so we live,
Afraid of the garden
And not the sieve.
We live untrue,
By untold lies,
By flickering fire,
And broken cries.
We seek happiness
And only find sorrow,
We remember yesterdays
And yet still dread tomorrow.
Don't we know
That, spoken true,
Yesterdays are 'nother days,
And tomorrows we'll not rue?
No, we don't,
And so we wait,
Afraid of shadows
And long-lost bait.
We don't know
Half the things
We think we know,
We act like kings
But we are fools,
Living for the days
And never seeing that
What matters is the ways
That we express our love
To those we care about,
And knowing that that love
Is the one thing we can never do without.
