From Clara's Father
It was already 11pm and my daughter hadn't called. We talked to each other every night! Where was she? Normally I wouldn't mind her calling late. Her schedule was busier than mine so I was happy to wait. Plus, my rough and tumble girl could hold her own so I hardly worried. The reason for my excitement now, however, was the good news I wanted to tell her. I was so excited that I picked up the phone multiple times to make sure the dial tone was working. My darling daughter continuously tried to convince me to get a cell phone but I refused. There weren't that many people for me to talk to. The ringing of the phone startled me, but I still managed to answer before the end of the first ring.
"Is this my darling daughter?"
"I don't know. Is it?"
"Yes it is! How are you?"
"I've got some interesting news dad."
"Well I've got some amazing news for you daughter."
"You go first."
"No you go first."
"............"
"Ok daughter lets play Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide."
"Ok....."
"Ready. Rock, Paper, Scissors, shoot! What did you throw?"
"Rock."
"Awww I threw scissors! I guess my daughter goes first."
"I met a guy dad. He's silly and weak and he reminds me of you."
"He must be amazing then."
"I wouldn't say he's amazing. He's just him and he doesn't apologize for it. There is a problem though."
"What problem could my perfect daughter have?"
"I've lied to him twice already and we just met today. He's a good guy, I can tell, but he's too trusting."
"I'm not sure what you lied about but if you like him you should tell the truth eventually. The truth will set you free."
"It's addicting dad."
"What is?"
"Having a person look at you the way he looks at me. Having a person say to you the things he says to me. The way he listens, remembers, and cares! It's all addicting. I'm afraid to tell the truth because if it sets me free from him I would rather be held captive."
"Wow! I've never heard you talk like this before. Where did you meet him?"
"I just met him around town. You know how it is. Oh! And dad he walked me home. On the way we talked about nothing but it seemed like everything."
"He walked you home? What about your car?"
"I wrecked it a few days ago dad."
"You wrecked it!? Why didn't you tell me."
"Because I didn't want you asking mom for money. I don't want you indebted to her any more than you are now."
"Actually dear daughter, that's the perfect segway to my good news. Your Mother and I are getting back together!"
"Whaaaaaat!?! Are you serious? What about Johan?"
"Johan and your mother are finished. She wants to come back to me!"
"No Dad not again! Have you even talked to Myrna, Celeste, and Pixie about this?!"
"Your sisters are on board for the whole thing. They're excited to see their mother."
"Dad! While I applaud your willingness to care for children that aren't yours, you can't just take mom back every time one of her sugar daddies drops her!"
"It's not like that this time."
"It's like that every time dad!"
She hung up on me. The dial tone was more offensive than anything She could have said. I don't understand why she was so upset. Myrna, Celeste, and Pixie were her sisters. Sure they weren't all my biological children but I loved them just as much as I loved my own darling daughter. Why was she so angry? Didn't all children want their parents to get back together? I could never refuse my ex-wife. One day we would all be a big happy family.
