Chapter 14 ||Late Birthday Gift||
A/N: Look who's here finally? Me! *rolling eyes at myself* Yes, I'm here, finally with a chapter update I've written especially because tomorrow is going to be the first anniversary this book! I'm ever so thankful to God for His help and for all of you who reads and supports my story. Thanks for the 10k +! I love you all.
......
Caspian led his sister to the front balcony-platform of the hill. They had now changed into rather comfortable dressing, or to say, they took off their weapons and armor, and felt rather comfortable once it was off.
He sat down on the cliff, hanging his legs down and Cerlesta followed her brother's actions. She sat down close to him; she had been glued to his side all the way to here, because that much she missed his presence. Although, it was hard to say, who missed who the most.
“It's so beautiful, isn't it?” Cerlesta asked, leaning her head to Caspian's shoulder. “Breathtaking.”
“Yeah, it sure is.” Caspian sighed.
Cerlesta hugged his right arm she was leaned onto, squeezing it. That's when a thought hit her, his arm was injured! She suddenly lifted her head up and searched for the injury under his pierced sleeve, to see how bad it is.
“Didn't it hurt?” she asked, looking for the injury, only to get a confused look from Caspian. “I mean, didn't it hurt when I squeezed your arm? When I rested my he–”
“What exactly are you talking about?” Caspian asked cutting her off. He knew what exactly she was referring to, but acted as if he didn't.
Cerlesta tilted her head, the typical mothering sister rising in her. “You told me that our aunt shot you and your arm was bleeding! What are you talking about?” she asked, folding her arms across her chest.
“So, you were thinking that, Lucy's cordial healed only my hand? Really, Cery? Where's your brain?” Caspian took his chance to annoy her after how long it seemed to be like ages to him.
Oh. Cerlesta's mouth hung a bit open as she took her brother's words in. “You're right,” she said a bit surprised, “How come I didn't know that! Stupid me! Of course, the cordial heals every injury!” she chuckled at last in disbelief and slapped her hand over her head for her stupidity.
Caspian chuckled, “You're not stupid! You just needs me to remind you to use your brain; which you need to do most of the times.” he said.
She joined in the laughter, “You're right; yeah, you're always right.” she said, rolling her eyes. “So, tell me what exactly happened in home. How– why did our aunt shot you?” she asked, and her amused face fell all of a sudden. Even though she didn't want to end their happy mood, she wanted to know what happened and why her dear kind aunt shot her brother. Something she couldn't even imagine in her dreams.
Caspian sighed for the hundredth time of the day, “That can wait. First things first; I wanna sort everything out from the beginning and that's why we're here.” he said.
“Sort out?”
Caspian took a deep breath, “First of all, I'm so sorry I ruined your birthday–”
“Don't.” Cerlesta cut of her brother's words, “Don't apologize. Don't you think I know why you had to runaway? I'm not a little girl anyone, Caspian, you have to understand that.”
“Of course I understand that but you don't know how I'm feeling. I had so many plans; so many means, so much than I had for any other birthdays before. But everything –”
“I know, Cas;” Cerlesta cut him off, “yes, we were planning for a pleasure trip –”
“That's all you know,” Caspian chuckled sadly, “If you knew why I settled up the trip, you would really count it as a real loss.” he said.
“No,” her voice shook as she spoke, “What I had as a real loss was your departure; nothing can be compared to that. I don't know how did I managed to live there without you!” she said, a tear escaping her eyes.
“I know,” Caspian sighed, “but it was all for good, don't you think?” he asked, looking ahead to the mountain tops of the far.
“Maybe,” Cerlesta shrugged and wiped her tears away, “So, what exactly were you planning for my birthday? You said it wasn't meant to be just a pleasure trip.” she said.
“You wouldn't believe if I tell you that,” he said.
“You're gonna tell it to me anyway and I should believe it as well, so there's no point in worrying.” she shrugged.
“Was that sarcasm I heard?” the corner of Caspian's lips twitched into a smirk.
“Isn't it a shame if don't inherit my brother's humor at least a bit?” she asked, raising her eyebrows at him.
Caspian chuckled softly, “Okay well, you're right, that's indeed a shame.” he said.
“So, what was it?” Cerlesta inquired once their laughter died out.
Caspian took a shaky breath, “I found that, our nanny is still alive –”
“What?!” Cerlesta exclaimed, cutting off her brother. “You've got to be kidding me!”
“No, she lives in Beaversdam.”
Cerlesta narrowed her eyes, “And how come you know that?” rather than being surprised, she asked a bit in jealous.
“Hey, don't look at me like I've known this since the beginning and been hiding it from you in our entire life.–”
“I know you haven't been hiding it from me in our entire life because it has only been 9 years since we got her into trouble.” Cerlesta rolled her eyes.
“She's sick and was wishing to see us before,” Caspian took a deep breath and continued, “before she pass away.”
Cerlesta clasped a hand over her mouth, her eyes filled up with tears. She haven't been lucky enough to be with her much as her brother but she was like a grandmother to them and they loved her to death. And now her news has shocked Cerlesta, that she's still alive and not dead as she used to worry about; but now, she has begun to worry more than she had, at hearing this from her brother. Their nanny haven't forgotten them, and it's them she wants to see before she pass away.
Cerlesta couldn't handle it, “How do you know this?” she asked.
“Remember my old friend Yutius?” Caspian asked and she nodded, “He came across her home two months ago; he was cold and wanted a shelter and met a little girl somewhere by who was willing to help him. And the house she led him into was where nanny was living. He was quite shocked. They talked as nanny realized him and asked about us. That's when she said that, she's been having our faces in her mind all the time ever since she was sent away and asked Yutius to tell me her request that, she wants to see us both before she leaves.” Caspian felt a lump in his throat and worse, he was feeling guilty. It's been two months since he was informed about her and how can he know that, is she still alive?
“Two months? You've known this for two months? Caspian, how come you never told me? We waisted our time, didn't we? Goodness knows if she's still there.” Cerlesta bit back her sob.
Caspian sighed, “I know, but I wanted it to happen on your birthday, that's why I kept it.” he said and turned to her, “Cery look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I promise I wouldn't do that again, will you forgive me?” he asked, wiping her fallen tears from her cheeks.
Cerlesta forced a smile, “Of course, how can I ever be mad at you? Sorry I overreacted at first, I'm also sorry if you felt this is your fault, from what I said. I understand what you mean, I wouldn't blame, I would try to keep such things as surprise if I were you. I'm so sorry.” she said, leaning in to burry her face in his chest, “I love you.”
“I love you more,” Caspian whispered, hugging her close to his chest from side. They sat there in silence for some minutes and that's when Caspian rememberec something. He couldn't believe he forgot that, after all, this was the time he was waiting for, since he ran away from his home.
“Oh. I almost forgot,” he mumbled and reached to his side pocket. Cerlesta lifted her head up from his chest and looked curiously to her brother's pocket. “What's it?” she asked, pulling away from him.
“Do you remember how sad you were when you found that you've lost your necklace I got for you?” He asked, amused at the memory.
“Yeah,” she nodded confusedly.
“And what did I say to you then?”
“Er... I don't exactly remember but... all I remember is that you weren't worried at all.” Cerlesta shrugged.
“Yes, but you forgot the point.” he said and revealed a velvet pouch in his palm. “I bought this for you but I wasn't able to give it you on your birthday. I asked professor to give you this but–”
“–but he told you that it's good if you give it to me by yourself. I know.” Cerlesta finished his sentence, cutting him off.
“He told you? Good anyway. I was keeping this with me all the time wherever I went, as if carrying your presence with me even though I didn't gave you yet.” Caspian said and pressed the pouch into her hand, “Belated happy birthday, love.” he said and kissed her forehead.
Cerlesta hugged him, squeezing her eyes shut. “I missed your birthday wishes and your departure made me understand that how much my life is depended on you, more than I ever knew. I don't want to leave you again.” she said.
Caspian hugged her back tight, “I promise, you won't need to leave me again. Now, open your gift; this was the moment I've been waiting for.” he hurried her to open the gift.
She giggled and shook her head and opened the pouch. Something blue caught her eyes inside it and she put her hand in. Her fingers intertwined with what she felt like a chain and pulled it out.
First, a silver chain came before her eyes and then a blue crystal hanging on it. She gasped and tears ran up to fill her eyes; she had never seen anything more simple and elegant at the same time and this one was hundred times better than her old one, in her opinion.
“Caspian! This is... gorgeous! It's perfect! Aww..I love it!” she almost exclaimed and wrapped her arms around her brother, to squeeze him in a hug. “I had no idea, my brother has got a good taste on choosing the best ornaments than me! Oh brother, you're the best!”
Caspian laughed heartly, “Why, thank you princess.” he said dramatically and ruffled her hair, “Although, I wasn't sure if you like it.” This was the least I can give to tell you how sorry I am for the worst birthday you had. He devoured that part, only not to earn her deathly glare.
They sat together in embracing after Cerlesta put on the necklace around her neck and promised her brother she won't take it off and will secure it all her life. They catched up on the time they had to spend away from each other and at one occasion, they reached back to the point where Caspian didn't want to reach.
“You didn't tell me the reason why our aunt shot you yet.” Cerlesta pointed out and Caspian knew, he can't escape her. So, unwillingly, he had to explain everything to her.
Cerlesta's heart stopped dead, “He-he killed our father? Why? How?” she asked, her voice was blurry and shaky, her heart couldn't accept it, her soul denied to believe it but this was her brother saying it, and she knew she had to believe even if she can't.
“I don't know anything else but he was dead in his sleep as we know, so–”
“–so, he murdered him in his sleep.” Cerlesta completed the sentence for him.
“Yeah,” Caspian nodded.
“I never knew he was a blood thirsty, power hungry monster.” Cerlesta clenched her fists.
“He wanted the throne; so he killed our father to own it and now, since he got an heir of his own, he wanted to kill me to get it for his son since he knew, while his owe is unbreakable, he had to take the action.” Caspian gritted his teeth. “I didn't leave you behind in his hands on purpose, you know?” he turned to his sister.
“I know. Professor told me. And it was your life in trouble, not mine and I can promise you, he didn't dare to hurt me at all, other than with words about you.” she said, “But nothing matters now that I'm with you. You are all that I need. You are my father and my mother, Caspian, and, a world without you is not the world I want to live in.”
Caspian was overwhelmed by emotions at her words, he didn't say anything because he couldn't; so he just pulled her closer to him, he had tears running to fill his eyes that he couldn't control. He realized how much he needed her, she was his treasure, his life and everything; and he knew from the past days of departure that, he can't live without her too.
“Yes love, you are my world too. And I can promise you this, you'll never have to leave my side again. We'll take down the man who murdered our father and is hunting after us. But nothing in this world can separate us again.” he finally said, burying his face in her hair.
Cerlesta nodded against her brother's chest, “And I'll never leave your side, even to death. If we live, we live together and if we die, we die together.”
She pulled away her head from his chest and looked up into his brown eyes, deep beyond the irisis where she saw, she wasn't the only one saying it, but he too.
A/N: And then later, professor Cornelius joined them and had the conversation we see in the movie. So, I'm leaving the risk to you to think the rest; for now.
Yeah, I know and I'm sorry this was a boring chapter. It was even boring for me to write as well. But I wanted to let this out for the first anniversary.
And finally, I do have some plans to continuing this book but I'm afraid it won't happen soon. I mean, I will not abandon this book (man, this is my first story ever!) but I will try to write it when I get mood and plans on the wheels.
So, until then, goodbye and take care. Thanks again for your support!
And wait! If anyone is interested in a Christian Love Story, please feel free to check out my book called, The Runaway Girl. I would really appreciate if you could support me.
Lots of love,
Karen Zchelea.
